Gadget prices have fallen for decades. Then AI happened.

    June 26, 2026 / 4:11 PM EDT / CBS News

After decades of declining costs, consumer electronics ranging from computers to video game consoles are jumping in price as the artificial intelligence boom drives a global shortage of memory and storage chips.

“The vast majority of the chips are going to the AI buildout and the data center revolution we’re seeing,” Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives told CBS News. “That’s [fewer] chips for these regular consumer devices. That just further drives up prices.”

On Thursday, Apple and Microsoft each said they were hiking prices on core products, including iPads, certain MacBook models and Xbox consoles, as strong demand for chips drives up the cost of electronic device components. Apple could also raise iPhone prices to offset rising manufacturing costs, according to analysts at market researcher International Data Corporation (IDC).

IDC analyst Nabila Popal said Apple’s price hikes were higher than she had expected. That suggests any iPhone price increases may also be higher than expected, perhaps as much as $200 for the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models.

“I think the days of $50 price increases are over,” she said.

The rise in gadget prices is unusual, as the cost of personal computers and other personal electronics has generally fallen since the 1980s. The latest government inflation data show that prices for computer software and accessories have surged by more than 14% over the last year. Personal computers, such as tablets, home assistants and computer hardware, are up 1.3%.

    What’s behind the chip shortage?

The three biggest memory chip manufacturers — Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix — have historically produced semiconductors for devices such as smartphones and for other consumer products such as cars.

But those chipmakers are now racing to meet surging demand from Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Oracle and other tech giants — dubbed “hyperscalers” — that need memory chips for the thousands of data centers they are building to provide a range of AI services.

“Basically, we ended up with a situation where those companies, the hyperscalers, started buying the entire capacity from those suppliers” at premium prices, Francisco Jeronimo, vice president for data and analytics at IDC, told CBS News.

Historically, most of Micron, SK and Samsung’s chip production focused on churning out so-called DRAM and NAND semiconductors, the standard memory chips used in smartphones, PCs and other electronics. But semiconductor manufacturers are now devoting more resources to producing so-called high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used to provide memory for data centers.

For semiconductor makers, HBM chips are more profitable to produce than those used in personal devices, Jeronimo said. Manufacturers effectively said, “What is the point of selling and making memory for smartphones or PCs or any other device when we have this huge opportunity for many years to come?” he added.

Last year, for example, Boise, Idaho-based chipmaker Micron Technology abandoned consumer chip production altogether, framing the decision as a necessary move to meet surging demand tied to AI growth.

As memory and storage supply shrinks amid rising AI demand, chip prices have risen, spurring companies like Apple and Microsoft to pass those costs onto consumers, Jeronimo said, describing the current chip shortage as “way worse” than the supply disruptions during the pandemic caused by factory closures.

“There’s no more stock,” he said. “Every single memory [chip] they buy, it costs 100% to 200% more than six or 12 months ago.”

Wedbush Securities estimates that there are 15 times as many memory chip orders from tech companies as there are available chips.

Meanwhile, boosting chip supplies is difficult due to manufacturers’ limited production capacity and the enormous expense of building semiconductor fabrication facilities, which can cost $10 billion and take up to five years to complete.

“You can’t just snap your fingers and release more memory chips,” Ives said.

How long could the chip shortage last?

Tech analysts and economists predict the chip shortage will persist at least through 2027 and perhaps later, citing the time required to expand or build new plants.

In the meantime, consumers can expect prices to continue rising.

Tech research firm Gartner forecasts that PC and smartphone prices could jump 17% and 13%, respectively, this year from their 2025 levels because of rising chip costs.

Higher prices could cause consumers to hold onto devices longer, denting smartphone sales, according to Jeronimo.

Ives advises consumers to buy their next electronic device now before prices rise further.

“We’re going to continue to see price increases…especially going into the holiday season,” he told CBS News.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., lashed out at President Donald Trump during a recent local television interview, labeling him a “man-child” throwing a “tantrum” over his refusal to sign a sweeping bipartisan housing package.

Appearing on WCVB’s “On the Record,” the left-wing senator did not hold back her frustration over the stalled legislation, delivering a blunt message to the president: “Sign the damn bill.”

“If he cared about the American people, he’d have already signed the damn thing,” Warren said during the interview, arguing that Trump “does not care about the economic survival of America’s working families.”

TRUMP-BACKED HOUSING BILL CLEARS HOUSE AFTER GOP DEFIES SENATE PRESSURE CAMPAIGN

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act is an expansive bipartisan package that she said contains nearly 50 provisions designed to address the nationwide housing emergency.

Warren noted that decades of under-building have driven prices up, leaving the U.S. in need of millions of new units.

The primary focus of the bill is to lower the costs of construction and make it easier to build new homes.

The bill, which was co-sponsored by Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., also includes a secondary focus aimed at blocking corporate consolidation of the housing market.

Warren explained that the legislation is designed to keep private equity firms from buying up local neighborhoods and turning America “into a nation of renters.”

According to Warren, the legislation had widespread support from both sides of the aisle before it was stalled.

TRUMP VOWS BLOCK ON SIGNING NEW LAWS UNTIL SAVE AMERICA ACT PASSES SENATE

She claimed the bill was “handed to the president on a silver platter” and that lawmakers from both parties were eagerly taking credit for the legislation.

“Republicans were all going online, saying, ‘well, I helped write that bill. This bill is terrific,’” Warren said. “So everybody’s out there saying, ‘my bill, I helped make this happen,’ right up until the man-child has a tantrum and announces he will not be signing it.”

Critics of the legislation claim it does not allocate fresh federal funding, directly address rising costs of homeownership, or go far enough to address permitting issues.

The president previously canceled a scheduled signing event, insisting lawmakers must first approve the unrelated SAVE America Act, a voting-focused measure, before he moves forward.

Video shows Boeing 777 making very low pass over Texas airfield

    June 26, 2026 / 7:31 PM EDT / CBS News

A Boeing 777 plane was seen taking a very low pass over Central Texas as it approached the Horseshoe Bay Resort Jet Center airport this week, video shows.

Data from flight tracking service FlightRadar24 showed the plane was no more than 25 feet above the ground during the low pass on Wednesday.

Pilots had alerted the air traffic control tower to the maneuver, according to audio from LiveATC.net: “We are turning final runway 17 for a low approach, 5DN heavy.”

The Federal Aviation Administration says it’s investigating.

The plane is owned by Jetran, a company based in Horseshoe Bay.

In a statement, Jetran said that the plane “was undergoing a final pre‑delivery test flight prior to its planned entry into the Qatar Airways Cargo fleet.”

“While the aircraft is painted in Qatar Airways livery, it was not owned or operated by Qatar Airways, did not carry a Qatar Airways registration, and the pilots on board were not Qatar Airways pilots,” Jetran said.

“We expect the relevant parties and authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly and take appropriate action,” the company added.

Qatar Airways deferred CBS News to Jetran.

Former National Transportation Safety Board Chair Robert Sumwalt told CBS News the pilots could face having their credentials suspended over the move, calling it “another example of stupid pilot tricks.”

“I see no legitimate reason at all to perform this maneuver the way that it was done,” Sumwalt said. “They clearly had planned it, they had an audience standing by to watch it and to video it, so there’s no real reason why they should have been doing this.”

Texas state school board approves mandated reading list including Bible passages

June 26 (Reuters) – The Texas Board of Education on Friday approved mandated reading lists for public school children that include passages from the Bible – the latest effort by leaders there to infuse ‌the education system with conservative and religious ideals.

The Republican-dominated board, in a 9-5 vote with one member absent and not voting, approved the reading lists for over 5 million public school students beginning in 2030.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

Texas had already mandated that the Bible’s Ten Commandments be displayed in all public schools, a decision that was upheld by a federal appeals court earlier this year, following on the heels of other Republican-led states seeking to infuse public education with Christian teachings.

Critics say these decisions are at odds with the Constitution’s “establishment clause,” long understood by courts as separating church and state. Supporters say the measures restore basic Judeo-Christian teachings to school systems, which many have said are ‌historically significant.

The required reading list is wide-ranging and includes mostly non-Biblical and classical texts, such as Aesop’s fables, tales about Native Americans, and a children’s versions of Don Quixote. Critics have noted that much of the list comprises texts written by white male authors, in a state with a majority of Latino and Black students.

Rachel Laser, the head of the advocacy group Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said in a written statement that the Texas board of education’s decision sought to “misuse public schools to impose one narrow set of religious beliefs and indoctrinate a new generation of Americans in the lie that America is a Christian country.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the U.S.-brokered framework agreement between Jerusalem and Lebanon on Friday as a robust first step toward peace and a rejection of Iranian interference in the region.

The breakthrough could lead to a path of diplomatic normalization between the two countries, Lebanon and Israel, that are in a formal state of war. The framework agreement may impede the Iran-backed terrorist movement Hezbollah that has gained control over parts of the Lebanese state, according to experts.

Hezbollah and Israel have fought two wars since the terrorist organization joined Hamas’ invasion of Israel in Oct. 7, 2023 and following U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran in February.

Rubio said, “Today is a good day in that we are happy to announce a framework agreement between the sovereign government of Lebanon and, of course, the government of Israel, with a mediation and support of the United States of America, that begins to put in place a framework for lasting peace and security.”

He added, “And that’s what these two nations deserve.”

According to the Press Service of Israel (TPS-IL), Netanyahu termed the deal “a severe blow to Iran.” He added that the Islamic Republic seeks to force an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, and “essentially Israel, Lebanon and the United States are telling them: This is none of your business. You have no role in southern Lebanon — neither you, nor Hezbollah nor any other terrorist organization.”

U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, wrote on X:” Was there all week but had to fly back to Israel Thursday night. Historic opportunity but key is disarming Hezbollah, evil terrorists who have killed Americans. Israel, Lebanon sign framework peace agreement following US-backed negotiations.”

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun, in an Arabic-language X Post, thanked the U.S. administration, led by President Donald Trump, “for its efforts in hosting and facilitating the negotiations and for supporting Lebanon’s position.”

Rubio’s optimistic announcement encouraged some veteran Lebanon experts about a historic opportunity for peace, while others warned about the necessity to proceed with caution.

Guila Fakhoury, whose father, Amer, was kidnapped by Hezbollah in 2019, told Fox News Digital that “Today marks a historic achievement. For the first time since 1983, Lebanon and Israel have reached an agreement through direct negotiations. It also represents a fundamental shift in regional dynamics, demonstrating that Lebanon’s future need not be contingent upon broader regional negotiations or arrangements negotiated through proxy influence. In that sense, this agreement supersedes previous efforts to tie Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty to external agendas.”

Fakhoury, added, “If these commitments are fulfilled, this agreement could become the foundation for long-term cooperation, security, economic opportunity and shared stability that benefits both the Lebanese and Israeli people.”

She continued, “However, whether this agreement brings lasting peace and stability will depend entirely on its implementation. The Lebanese state and its legitimate institutions must be the ones to create stability, not external actors or armed organizations operating outside government authority.”

Walid Phares, a leading U.S. expert on Lebanon and the Mideast, told Fox News Digital, “This agreement is just a ceasefire not a conduit to a larger peace deal. Hezbollah take orders from Iran. It’s clear Tehran will complain about such a deal and pressure the negotiators to get some statement from Washington asserting the Islamic Republic’s say over Lebanon. Hezbollah will attack the deal but will pray Israel won’t strike. The Trump administration will have to calibrate between the Rubio-sponsored agreement on Lebanon and the fragility of the situation in the Gulf.”

He added, “The regime is telling Hezbollah ‘keep the narrative up and radical but let us get the money first.’ Israel is giving its public something and mindful of Trump’s concerns about the deal with Iran. The Lebanese government is hoping their army does not have to engage. The only unknown is the ability of the Lebanese opposition to rise and resist Hezbollah. We are still inside the Lebanese status quo.”

Hanin Ghaddar, a senior fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, wrote on X: “Absolutely a breakthrough,” This is the first agreement between Israel and Lebanon since 1983. A clear and loud ‘NO’ to Iran as it challenges its efforts to control Lebanon ‘s file.”

She added, “But as the 1983 agreement was toppled by the bad guys then (Assad regime), Iran will try everything to make sure this one fails as well.Lebanon and Israel have a responsibility in making sure this agreement is protected, and its implementation is successful. We will probably not have another chance.”

Nurse of 58 years who went above and beyond for patients gets special retirement send-off: “You’re an angel”

    June 26, 2026 7:46 PM EDT / CBS News

COLUMBUS, Ohio — When Wynola Wayne walked out of work for the last time after 58 years as a nurse, you could tell this was no ordinary retirement send-off. This was the canonization of a saint who went above and beyond for her patients.

Back in 1965, Marco Houpe, who was just 15 months old at the time, was visiting his grandma’s house when a Christmas tree caught fire. Marco had third-degree burns over 85% of his body.

“On the way to the hospital, I died twice. … They didn’t expect me to make it,” Houpe said. “When the fire department found me, a toy was melted in my left hand.”

Houpe was brought to what is now Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where a brand-new nurse — still in training — was working in the burn unit.

“And there was such a feeling of connection with him,” Wayne recalled. “And even though those burns were extensive, I said, ‘You’re going to survive.’ Because I could see it in his eyes.”

“My parents used to tell me about this nurse. In the morning, she was there. In the evening, she was there. At night, she was there,” Houpe said.

When asked if his parents credited this nurse with saving his life, Houpe said, “Yep, absolutely” — and he has come to believe the same.

“If it wasn’t for her then, I wouldn’t be here today,” he said.

Where he is today is married to his wife Tiffany for 12 years. They have two children, and Houpe has a good job as a school administrator and coach.

None of that surprises Wayne, who was so impressed by the will of that little boy that she named her own son after him. Likewise, Houpe was so impressed with Wayne’s compassion that he calls her his guardian angel.

“She fought for me while I didn’t know how to fight. She would not give up,” he said.

After a five-minute standing ovation at her retirement sendoff, Houpe escorted Wayne out of the building. And although she is now retired as a nurse, Marco says she will always retain her other title: “You’re an angel. You’re an angel.”

Trump warns ‘godless communists’ will turn cities into slums as Dems fail to fight socialist surge

Americans sound the alarm over socialist surge following New York sweep

Fox News Digital spoke with attendees at the Great American State Fair rally about their concerns over the rise of socialism in the United States.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Donald Trump took aim at the trajectory of the Democratic Party on Friday, telling attendees at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference that its recent socialist primary winners are “godless communists.”

“These are not social democrats. These are hardcore, godless communists. They’re godless communists. All communists are godless. They don’t believe in God. This is the most serious threat to our country since its existence. In my opinion, 250 years ago. This is a major threat to our country,” said Trump.

Tuesday’s primary results in New York signaled a shift in the Democratic Party, with several socialist-backed candidates defeating incumbent officeholders. Trump, speaking ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday, highlighted America’s founding principles, arguing they stand in sharp contrast to the growing influence of socialist movements within the Democratic Party.

“Our most important birthday so far, 250 years and instead of speaking about Christ and instead of speaking about freedom and victories of all different kinds, we’re speaking about yet another threat to the foundations of America,” said Trump.

He took aim at New York City socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani over a historic decision by New York City’s Rent Guidelines Board.

Mamdani scored another political victory Tuesday, with all three congressional candidates he endorsed — Brad Lander, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier — winning their respective Democratic primaries.

“For the first time in history, the powerful Rent Stabilization Board, as an example that sets rents in New York City just happened today. They’ve done it for years and years and they’ve been very far left,” said Trump.

“Mayor Mamdani, who came to the White House and seemed like a nice guy, but he said he was going to do this in his campaign,” said Trump.

“As this spreads throughout the country, very much like an uncontrollable form of cancer, the country itself will be taken down. It will be third world, strictly third world. And it’s happened many times before to very big and very powerful countries. But it’s not going to happen to the United States of America,” Trump added.

WASHINGTON, June 26 (Reuters) – The United States has seized nearly 400 internet domains that were being used to illegally stream the World Cup, officials said on Friday, describing ‌the move as one meant to disrupt international networks profiting from the popularity of the tournament.

The U.S. Justice Department said the domains were identified with the assistance of soccer governing body FIFA and others, including NBC Universal and Warner Brothers.

The Reuters Inside Track newsletter is your essential guide during the World Cup. Sign up here.

The domains were used to illegally offer users copyright-protected content in the form of real-time streams of the World Cup matches as they were being played and first broadcast, the department said.

“These streamers not only violate copyright laws but also expose viewers to potential threats — including malware attacks and unsecure connections that can compromise personal and financial data,” Eric Weindorf, a special agent in charge ‌at Homeland Security Investigations, said in a statement.

Servers and domains linked to the unauthorized streaming of the tournament’s matches were targeted in Peru and Bulgaria, the DOJ said, adding that additional disruptions took place in Croatia, Romania, Poland and Colombia.

The World Cup kicked off on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Games are scheduled to be played in 16 cities across the three countries through July 19.

Attendance for the matches have set an all-time record, according to FIFA. Last week’s matches were some of the most watched television programs, according to Nielsen. The United States’ win over Australia topped that list.
