US aircraft communications with FAA ‘incredibly insecure,’ senator says

WASHINGTON, Sept 21 (Reuters) – A government watchdog report on Monday shows communications between US air traffic ​controllers and commercial airplanes are “incredibly insecure” and the Federal Aviation ‌Administration must take steps to address threats, Senator Ron Wyden said.

The Government Accountability Office said the FAA has not completed risk assessments and updated security documentation needed to address ​spoofing and jamming threats, and does not have a real-time detection ​capability for all spectrum-related threats.

“This sobering report from GAO reveals ⁠that the technology used by air traffic controllers to communicate with aircraft ​is incredibly insecure, can be intercepted, impersonated, and jammed, and that hackers ​and foreign governments can exploit these vulnerabilities to disrupt air travel and even put passengers at risk,” Wyden said.

The report said hackers could transmit fraudulent clearance cancellations or other messages ​to airplanes potentially leading to flight delays, airspace disruptions or safety issues.

Wyden ​added, the “FAA’s failure to require the aviation industry to use secure communications is a major ‌threat ⁠to U.S. national security, to our economy and the safety of the flying public.”

The FAA did not immediately comment.

Two systems for sending messages to aircraft were developed before modern cybersecurity safeguards became commonplace and lack common encryption ​safeguards.

The FAA said in ​response to the ⁠report it agreed with GAO’s nine recommendations.

“As aircraft and flight operations become more interconnected, cyber and electromagnetic vulnerabilities ​pose increasing risks to critical systems, including air traffic control, ​data communications ⁠and avionics,” the FAA said.

Spoofing and jamming have been a big issue in Europe for critical satellite navigation systems.

Estonia and its neighbor Finland have blamed Russia ⁠for jamming ​GPS navigation devices in the region’s airspace, ​charges that Moscow has denied. One incident in 2025 involved a Spanish military jet with the ​country’s defense minister onboard.

In war’s opening days, Iran’s attacks on Bahrain caught Navy families and sailors by surprise

On the very first day of the war, Iran targeted the Navy’s Middle East headquarters in Bahrain — before the U.S. government had evacuated all the military families based there. Some had to wait about a week or more to reach safety, according to multiple families who spoke to CBS News.

“You’re definitely scared,” one military spouse said. “As the week goes on, you wake up to ballistic missiles being fired. We went to sleep with the sound of ballistic missiles again.”

Iranian missiles and drones targeted Bahrain consistently for several days after the war began, according to another spouse. The scale and duration of those attacks appeared to take the U.S. government by surprise, three sources who were in Bahrain at the time told CBS News, in part because families hadn’t been required to evacuate until the war had already begun.

The military had anticipated some retaliation and had even evacuated the headquarters’ buildings on the base, but “we weren’t expecting that [scale],” one U.S. official said. And there were still several military families living off the base nearby.

One spouse said she could see the contrails of missiles and drones, and another heard explosions from attacks. CBS News granted anonymity to the spouses who feared retaliation for speaking.

No military personnel were killed in the attacks, but images that circulated on social media earlier this year — which sources say are authentic — show extensive damage to the base. One of the images shows an explosion during an attack on the first day of the war that targeted a key radar system.

Pentagon has not released a public estimated cost of damage

The U.S. military has not included the damage to bases in its cost estimates of the war so far because officials say they don’t know what will be rebuilt, but acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao in a recent interview with The Epoch Times said Iran’s retaliatory attacks “blew the hell out of Bahrain.”

Since Naval Support Activity Bahrain officially became the headquarters for the Navy’s Fifth Fleet in the ’90s, it has served as a logistics hub for ships in the Middle East, including during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the Navy’s website, the facility serves approximately 8,300 military personnel, Defense Department civilian employees and their families.

The damage has impacted sailors at sea as well. Earlier this year, the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier faced food shortages as the Navy adjusted resupply routes away from Bahrain. The New York Times reported some supplies had to come through Diego Garcia, an island some 2,200 miles away in the Indian Ocean.

The extended route requires 14- to 18-day logistics cycles to deliver supplies to ships, according to a Pentagon Inspector General report. That’s compared to 5 to 7 days from Bahrain, two former officials said. While there are other logistics hubs in the region, Bahrain was a key option before the war began.

Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Daryl Caudle, the Navy’s top officer, at a town hall last month acknowledged the service has had to restructure how it supplies ships in the Middle East.

“There was some early learning there on getting the logistics process in place that I think now we have in a very good situation,” Caudle said.

During the town hall, Caudle told a sailor who was evacuated from Bahrain that officials are working on retrieving belongings that were left behind because the Navy does not have imminent plans to return to the same level of footprint on the base.

“We’re not getting back in there anytime soon, I just want to be completely honest with that,” he said.

According to a Navy spokesperson, service members in Bahrain can ship their household goods and vehicles in person, and those outside Bahrain can designate a representative to act on their behalf, or coordinate travel back to Bahrain to move household goods and vehicles.

Some military families, service members and civilians in a bind

Since those opening days of the war, the Navy has helped evacuate about 1,450 service members and families from Bahrain. Many are now in a financial bind because they’re paying for at least two households — one in Bahrain and another in the U.S.

“We have burned through our savings,” one of the spouses told CBS News. “We have started having to take money out of our kids’ college funds to pay down all the bills that we’re incurring.”

The Pentagon is providing benefits to reimburse housing costs in both places, but families told CBS News claims can take weeks to months to process.

In a statement, a Navy spokesperson said, “The Navy remains in close communication with all affected service members, affiliated civilians and families through command channels and continues to provide timely information, individual case management, and relocation support.”

The spokesperson said families have until the end of November to transition from a safe haven to an established designated residence to continue receiving housing, relocation and separation entitlements.

Even if some families have not struggled financially through this process, all of them have been uprooted. Many were evacuated to Norfolk, Virginia, which is a Navy hub, or to Tampa, Florida, where U.S. Central Command’s headquarters is located.

Blue Star Families, a non-profit that supports military families, provided supplies to evacuees in Tampa, according to Suzy Malloy, the executive director of the chapter in the Tampa Bay region.

“We gave these kids backpacks with school supplies,” Malloy told CBS News. “We gave families brand new clothing, we gave them air fryers and crockpots so that they could cook in hotel rooms until they could adjust to something more permanent,” like an Airbnb or temporary military housing.

Malloy said the evacuees are still in a bit of limbo but are starting to settle into Tampa.

“My opinion is [U.S. Central Command] and their family readiness program have done a remarkable job keeping the train on the tracks,” Malloy said.

None of the families CBS News spoke to blamed the military for their challenges, but are frustrated with the overall situation — the evacuation and the uncertainty that has come after.

“Nobody expected this to go on so long,” one of the spouses said.

Sen. Cory Booker’s response to a question about Abdul El-Sayed’s election campaign in Michigan has some online observers questioning whether the Democratic Party’s elected officials are behind the socialist-adjacent candidate.

The Democrat from New Jersey joined Kristen Welker on ABC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, when he was asked a wide variety of policy questions along with a question about President Donald Trump’s announcement that he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House grounds. But the question about El-Sayed stole the show.

“Senator, you see there in our polls that socialism is viewed even more negatively than the ‘MAGA movement,’” Welker began. “President Trump is trying to paint progressives, and frankly all Democrats, as socialists, and we’re seeing one of the big battles play out for progressivism in Michigan right now with Abdul El-Sayed… do you think Democrats are drawing a firm enough line between themselves and socialism?”

“Again, this is really what the Republicans want to do — focus on a few fringe people,” Booker replied.

He then diverted away from discussing the party establishment’s fracture with far-left candidates and pivoted to attacking Trump’s economic and foreign policies.

“I serve in the United States Senate and I could go through my colleagues, left and right,” Booker said. “What we want right now is to end these reckless tariffs and drive down prices, to end this war to drive down prices, to give a tax plan for this country that puts more money in working peoples’ pockets and ends the giveaways to the wealthiest of Americans.”

Political observers on X quickly seized on the response, claiming that Booker is too late in the push to try and distinguish the Democratic Party from its far-left fringe and the rise in socialist candidates in this year’s midterm elections.

“Oops,” radio show host Jason Rantz simply of Booker’s comments to Welker.

“A day late and a dollar short,” said Trump Media & Technology Group communications adviser Katie Zacharia. “Senator Booker is trying to disassociate as the ‘Big Tent’ burns.”

She added that the senator should have condemned socialism outright, claiming the “Dem party [is] in disarray.”

“I really wonder what the internals they showed those senators in DC said,” author Carl Paulus, speculating that polling within the Democratic Party could suggest that the far left is dragging them down and causing sitting lawmakers to change their tune with just weeks until November’s election.

Booker was one of several senators who met with El-Sayed during a trip to Washington, D.C., last week.

After the meeting, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., El-Sayed’s campaign described the gathering as “warm.”

“We’re united in the fact that we have to win Michigan. Whatever our difference is, our agreement on the importance of winning Michigan to take back the Senate majority [is] overwhelming,” El-Sayed told MS NOW of the meeting.

“We had a warm meeting, good conversation, and I know that we left that conversation committed to doing what we need to do to take on different perspectives. And I also know that the things that bring us together are so much bigger than any of the disagreements that we have.”

President Donald Trump’s close aide Natalie Harp showed him clips of media coverage last week before he banned Politico, CNN and MS NOW from the White House, people familiar with the matter said.

One source said a graphic from Politico was among the material that is believed to have infuriated the president and helped inform his decision to bar the three outlets from the White House grounds. The president also viewed clips from television, a second source said.

Trump’s pronouncement, which came after a string of setbacks in the courts and Congress, caught many advisers — including those who deal with the press on a daily basis — by surprise. Trump did not point to any particular story or tension point as the cause when asked about it later that day.

“No reason,” he said Friday, when asked the ban, adding, “It’s a very simple ban. I don’t want them in my office. I don’t want them here. I would say the ban would go as far as you can.”

The president said his frustration stemmed from coverage dating back years. “It’s really just cumulative stories over the last two years. You get sick of it,” he said.

CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

Trump had grown increasingly irate by the end of last week at a stack of losses, including the Supreme Court’s decision to block new mail-in voting rules, the Federal Reserve’s decision to increase interest rates, a vote in Congress to rein in his ability to wage war in Iran and a judge’s ruling that his name could not be placed on the Kennedy Center, sources familiar with the matter said.

Trump’s political advisers have also offered him sober assessments of Republicans’ prospects in the upcoming midterm elections, sources said. Many vulnerable Republicans have begun distancing themselves from some of Trump’s policy decisions.

By the time Friday arrived, Trump was frustrated about media coverage depicting the string of setbacks and suggesting he was dragging down Republicans’ ability to retain their congressional majorities.

Some key advisers were not in the West Wing as the president came to his decision. Chief of staff Susie Wiles, who recently announced she was cancer-free after undergoing treatment, was not in the building, a source said. Vice President JD Vance was flying back from a campaign stop in Iowa when the president announced his decision.

Trump is also without a press secretary after Karoline Leavitt left the administration last month. While Trump has been considering candidates to replace her, he has not made a decision and does not appear to be in a rush to appoint a new spokesperson.

On Saturday morning, journalists from CNN, Politico and MS NOW were denied access when they tried to enter the White House grounds. CNN reporter Betsy Klein had her badge seized. All three news organizations are filing a critical First Amendment lawsuit to restore their access.

“Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting,” the news outlets said. “Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”

Harp, a former right-wing television host, is one of Trump’s closest advisers, particularly when it comes to the messages he posts on Truth Social. She often types out posts the president dictates, and she frequently shares printouts of news articles with him — many of them positive.

She attracted considerable media attention last month when Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff mentioned her by name in a now-viral speech, swiping at Trump’s “travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the Emir of Qatar.”

That was a reference to her joining the president — along with a very limited group — when he secretly boarded a smaller aircraft to leave Turkey due to a threat from Iran in July. The comment outraged the White House, which defended Harp and attacked Ossoff.

While Trump did not single out any particular story in issuing his ban, he made clear it was because of the tenor of the three outlets’ coverage.

The president also talked about his perception that the coverage of him was overwhelmingly negative, and that the ban could be lifted if the targeted outlets “could straighten themselves out.”

First Amendment advocates decried the move as unconstitutional, particularly if it was driven by the substance of the outlets’ coverage.

Over the weekend, Trump traveled for one night to Camp David, where he discussed — among other topics — how to proceed in Iran, according to one person familiar with the matter.

Trump was originally scheduled to depart the mountainside retreat on Sunday, but left a day early. He spent Sunday at his golf course in Northern Virginia.
