A senior official in New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration planned to meet with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations before the State Department reportedly intervened, and the meeting was canceled.

Commissioner Ana María Archila, leader of the Mamdani administration’s Office of International Affairs, was scheduled to meet with Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, Tuesday, the City Journal first reported.

A U.S. official familiar with the matter confirmed to Fox News Digital that the meeting had been scheduled.

The reported intervention marks the second known instance in recent weeks in which the Trump administration has stepped in over the Mamdani administration’s contacts with foreign leaders, highlighting growing federal scrutiny of New York City’s international outreach under its new socialist mayor.

The Office for International Affairs coordinates closely with the State Department on many diplomatic matters because of New York City’s role as host to the United Nations.

Once the State Department became aware of the planned meeting, it was called off and State Department officials met with Mamdani officials to clarify acceptable conduct, a State Department official told the City Journal.

The Iranian mission declined to comment on the meeting to Fox News Digital. “That meeting did not take place, it will not take place and I did not know about it until there was a press inquiry regarding it,” Mamdani said during a press conference on Friday.

Pressed on whether he supported such a meeting, he added: “I’ve said that that meeting will not be taking place. Thank you all very much.”

A State Department official told Fox News Digital in a statement: “We appreciate the mayor understanding the value of diplomacy, and for his decision to cancel this meeting. It is unconscionable that a New York City official would even consider meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to the U.N., a man who consistently works to undermine U.S. interests and whitewash his regime’s crimes against the United States, our allies, and Iran’s own citizens.”

Trump has repeatedly said he is “No. 1” on Iran’s “kill list,” and Israel recently shared intelligence with the U.S. president about an Iranian plot to assassinate him, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The reported Iran meeting would mark the second known instance in recent weeks in which the Trump administration intervened over the Mamdani administration’s contacts with foreign officials.

In June, the Washington Post reported that a planned meeting between Mamdani and Colombian President Gustavo Petro was scrapped after State Department objections. Fox News Digital has asked the State Department to confirm that account.

Archila, the official who planned to meet with the Iranian representative, served as the co-director of New York’s progressive Working Families party prior to her appointment as commissioner. She had no prior diplomatic experience before taking the role, and in 2022 ran for lieutenant governor of New York.

Archila made headlines in 2018 when she confronted former Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., outside a Senate elevator after he announced he would vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

She identified herself as a sexual assault victim and asked him why he would vote to confirm Kavanaugh after hearing the account of Christine Blasey Ford, who claimed Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers. Kavanaugh denied the allegation.

Trump says the Iran ceasefire is ‘OVER.’ What now?

The Iran war has apparently entered a new phase.

After more than three months of attempts to hold together an exceedingly brittle and confusing pair of ceasefires, President Donald Trump suggested Wednesday that the truce was ending.

Then he said it more firmly Friday.

The US has agreed to continue talks, Trump wrote on social media, but added that Iran had been informed, “in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!”

So what does this mean? And where does it leave the United States — both with the war effort and the politics that surround it?

Here are some key points and questions.

As with many of the president’s pronouncements, it’s not clear how lasting the sentiment will be. As of Friday morning, there’s been a lull in strikes, so it’s not as if full-scale war has returned.

Trump’s statement that talks will continue would also seem to suggest he really doesn’t want it to resume and is still fixated on an elusive peace deal.

He also this week resurrected his threats to target key Iranian civilian infrastructure, which would quite possibly be a war crime.

So it’s possible saying the ceasefire is over is more of a warning than anything else — the latest attempt by Trump to threaten Iran into submission and to cut an acceptable deal.

Of course, that hasn’t really worked before. So why would it now?

But if Trump is to be taken at face value, this would seem to be a pivot point featuring some difficult choices.

For one, does the United States go back to full-scale war in hopes of extracting something significant from Iran?

That seems to be the alternative to the ceasefire, judging by Trump’s and the administration’s past rhetoric. But the president also said Wednesday that “I don’t think it’s going to start again” — referring to large-scale war — and added, “We’re not looking for long term.”

Trump has also appeared to lay the groundwork this week for arguing that the war has already succeeded in denuclearizing Iran, even without getting its nuclear material or a long-term nuclear deal. That sounds somewhat like a guy who’s just ready to be done with it all.

For another, does the United States reinstitute its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz?

The reason the ceasefire crumbled in recent days was that Iran kept striking vessels in the area. The administration has argued the blockade gave the US significant leverage over the situation by applying major pressure on Iran’s economy. So if Tehran isn’t abiding by its promises from the memorandum of understanding to fully reopen the strait, one would think the US would want to reinstitute the blockade it had used as a countermeasure. But so far, there’s no sign of that.

Which leads to the big one: What else does the US do about the strait?

It’s pretty clear that a major reason for the ceasefire’s shakiness is Iran’s reluctance to give up its trump card: control of the strait. The war has proven Iran’s ability to inflict major damage on the world economy by threatening vessels that move through the strait, which, it’s worth remembering, was open before Trump started the war. That leverage is a huge problem for the US and its Gulf allies — not just in this war but for the foreseeable future in the Middle East.

It’s looking more and more like negotiations won’t resolve this, but it’s perhaps the one issue that needs to be resolved, somehow.

Beyond the difficult decisions in the Middle East are what this means, legally speaking, at home.

A true end to the ceasefire would seem to trigger questions about whether the administration must now get authorization from Congress for the war.

The War Powers Act states that Congress needs to declare war or authorize the use of military force within 60 days of hostilities starting — or 90 days if the president seeks an extension.

The administration has skirted this requirement by claiming that the war was actually “terminated” when the first ceasefire began on April 7 — even though the military was still stationed in the region and has occasionally carried out retaliatory strikes.

So now that the ceasefire is apparently over and the 90-day window passed in late May, does the administration now have to seek authorization? Logic would suggest it does.

Unless the administration is going to argue that the clock now goes back to where it was on April 7 — or that the US is in a new war. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth once said in congressional testimony that the clock was effectively paused during the ceasefire.

Either way, though, Trump’s decision should trigger a real debate about what war powers he should even have right now.

That said, there’s not a great way to enforce the War Powers Act unless enough congressional Republicans decide to. They’re the ones who could provide the votes to end the war, via war powers resolutions and other measures.

Both the House and Senate have voted narrowly to end the war (though the Senate later reversed itself). And it’s been clear that some Republicans are losing patience with the conflict, given it increasingly threatens their political prospects in the 2026 midterm elections.

The question now would seem to be whether the end of the ceasefire might tempt enough of them to either 1) push for Trump to go back to full-scale war in hopes that might achieve an actual victory or 2) decide to try to end the war.

When the Senate reversed itself after rebuking Trump last month, it did so thanks to two GOP critics who decided to give Trump some room to operate. Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy set aside his major concerns about the war and Trump’s negotiations after getting a White House briefing, while Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul cited how “hostilities seem to be over and the president asked me to give consideration to his negotiating position.”

Given the negotiations don’t seem to be working and the ceasefire is over (according to Trump), does Paul go back to voting against Trump’s authority? Does Cassidy — who’s already been defeated by a Trump-backed primary challenger — lose patience, too?

Similar questions loom over other Republicans who might worry about where this war is going and how much it could cost them in November.

And with Trump looking like he has no good options — or even much of a plan — they might start to feel the need to do something they’ve avoided like the plague throughout the last 18 months: actually assert their power over him.

Vance family to rent home in Virginia countryside

Washington— The Secret Service has been providing security measures to accommodate an additional residence for Vice President JD Vance and his family in Middleburg, Virginia, two senior law enforcement officials confirmed to CBS News.

Sources familiar with the decision say the rental property would supplement — not replace — the official vice presidential residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington. Middleburg is roughly 40 miles from the capital and is well-known for its hunting and horses.

Since the Vance family moved into the vice presidential residence at 1 Observatory Circle, they have made several upgrades, including a new fence for the 72-acre property and the addition of a new chicken coop.

Vance and his wife, Usha, have three young children, and are expecting their fourth this summer.

Middleburg has been home to previous presidential retreats. Former President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline built their Wexford retreat in the Virginia countryside near the town. Ronald and Nancy Reagan later rented the estate during the 1980 campaign.

NBC News first reported that the Vance family was considering leasing a property in Middleburg.

At least 12 killed by wildfire in southern Spain: “Majority of them are foreigners”

At least 12 people died in a wildfire Friday in the town of Los Gallardos in southern Spain, near the popular tourist city of Almeria, authorities said. Eight more were injured and 23 were unaccounted for.

The cause of the blaze hasn’t been determined but Spain has been one of many European nations hit by severe heat waves, with temperatures peaking at almost 106 degrees in the country’s south.

Antonio Sanz, the regional health minister of Andalucia, the region where the fire raged, told a press briefing four of those who died appeared to be “of British origin” because they were in a vehicle whose steering wheel was on the right side, unlike vehicles used by the rest of Europe.

Regional President Juanma Moreno pointed out on a local radio show that “the majority” of those who were killed “were foreigners” and the process of identifying them was ongoing.

Sanz added that some of the victims lost their lives after “deciding to find a different path (out) on their own, other than the evacuation one” recommended by officials and wound up walking across a “dry riverbed” that in the end “became a real trap.”

He stressed that the only way to assure area residents were safe was to institute a lockdown and relocate them, adding that sine 122 people had been brought to a nearby theatre and a sports center.

Hundreds of emergency responders were working to contain the flames that authorities described as very serious and concerning, since they were in an area with plentiful vegetation.

The fire has consumed almost 7,800 acres of the vast natural area and reached a highway, making the situation even more dangerous for passers-by.

The Spanish Royal Family canceled their toast during a ceremony at the General Air and Space Academy in Murcia where the king’s daughter, Princess Leonor, completed her military training ahead of her taking command of the country’s armed forces at some point. During his speech, King Felipe asked for a minute of silence for the fire’s victims.

Earlier in the morning, the crown royals expressed their condolences, saying they were “deeply saddened.”

“We express our sadness and condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and to all those affected. We also extend our gratitude and support to the emergency services and all those who, with professionalism and dedication, continue to work to address this situation,” they said in a statement on social media.

Erling Haaland has become one of the biggest stars in world soccer. The Norway star currently making his mark on the World Cup is known for an extraordinary goal-scoring ability, imposing 6-foot-5 frame, silly social media personality — and a seemingly endless appetite.

The Manchester City striker has been reported to consume around 6,000 calories every day during periods of intense training and competition. Much of that comes from simple, protein-rich meals sourced from some of his favorite farms, delis and butchers around Manchester.

I decided to find out what eating like a Viking is really like.

Our first stop was breakfast.

The order was straightforward but substantial: Four scrambled eggs, two thick slices of sourdough toast, a large bowl of Greek yogurt and berries and a black coffee with a splash of maple syrup.

It was plenty filling, but Haaland has also spoken about drinking raw milk, so I washed down the already substantial breakfast with a bottle of the rich, creamy beverage.

By lunchtime, I was already questioning my life choices. But the mission was just beginning.

We headed to Haaland’s favorite Italian deli, Ad Maiora, where they’ve even named a sandwich after him.

“The Haaland” has Parma ham, burrata, pesto, sun-dried tomatoes and truffle oil, all stuffed into a fresh flatbread that’s about a foot long.

The struggle was real.

But dinner was still looming, and causing the most anxiety. Haaland loves a large steak.

We visited the local butcher in Cheshire, an area outside Manchester where a number of famous footballers live. At The Cheshire Smokehouse, Wayne the butcher told us Haaland stops by to purchase many of his steaks, as well as venison, because it’s naturally lean and lower in cholesterol.

But I wasn’t there to take the sensible option. If it was going to be the full Haaland experience, it had to be a giant steak.

That evening, we headed to the Hawksmoor steakhouse, where the huge slabs of beef are seared over charcoal. We were told Haaland regularly orders bone marrow as an accompaniment, so that’s how I kicked off the meal.

On an already full stomach, with no bread or wine to ease its path, the marrow almost proved to be my breaking point.

Then the steak arrived.

A beautifully charred, perfectly medium-rare porterhouse weighing an astonishing 2.6 pounds.

I gave it everything I had. But eventually, I had to admit defeat.

Eating like one of the world’s best soccer players is a lot harder than it looks. But then, I’m not a 25-year old professional athlete burning thousands of calories a day.

I’m a 30-something mom of three who tried to keep up with one, for just 24 hours.

The experience brought a new appreciation for the extraordinary physical demands on elite athletes. All that meat and no wine?!

Haaland has captivated fans around the world with his goals, his personality and his larger-than-life presence. Norway’s success thus far in the World Cup has shown a global audience that, whether it’s scoring goals or clearing dinner plates, few people can keep up with “The Striking Viking.”

Man partially sucked out of broken Ryanair plane window during flight, fellow passenger says

Thessaloniki, Greece — A man was nearly sucked out the window of a Ryanair flight when it “detached” midair en route to Germany, with other passengers pulling him back inside, a witness told Greek media on Friday.

The passenger, described as a tourist from Serbia on a flight from Thessaloniki in Greece to Memmingen in Germany, was hospitalized with friction burns but was otherwise in good condition, authorities said. The Associated Press quoted an unnamed Greek hospital official as saying the 61-year-old man was treated for neck and shoulder injuries and friction burns.

“Most of us had fallen asleep, we had closed our eyes. There was a noise, like a tire bursting,” a fellow passenger told Radio Thessaloniki.

“We immediately realized there had been a decompression. There were screams … for a moment I thought someone had accidentally opened the emergency door,” the woman said. “The masks dropped and there was a strong smell. The head and shoulders of one passenger were outside the window. Fortunately, he hadn’t taken off his seat belt.”

Other passengers near the man helped to pull him in, she said.

Video circulating on social media, which CBS News could not independently verify, purportedly showed the inside of the plane after the incident, with a broken window and oxygen masks hanging from the ceiling, but no passengers visible.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) told CBS News they were aware of the incident and would support the investigation.

“We are in contact with the FAA as state of design of the aircraft as well as the engine manufacturer,” the EASA said in a statement. “We will follow the situation closely as more information emerges and take any continued airworthiness action needed to ensure safety.”

The FAA said in a statement that it “stands ready” to support local authorities and the NTSB in the investigation and confirmed the passenger jet was a U.S.-made Boeing aircraft.

“The Boeing 737-800 returned safely to Thessaloniki Airport in Greece, Friday, July 10 around 7:10 a.m. local time after experiencing a broken window,’ the FAA said.

A woman died in a similar sounding incident in the U.S. in 2018, and an aviation expert told CBS News at the time that it is possible for a person to be sucked out of a plane window in flight if they aren’t wearing a seatbelt, due to the “incredible amount of pressure trying to rush out of that small opening.”

Greek media reported the incident had occurred over North Macedonia, and said the window had been broken by a piece of debris that detached from one of the plane’s engines.

Ryanair said in a statement that the flight “returned to Thessaloniki shortly after takeoff when a passenger window detached during the flight. The aircraft landed normally and the passengers returned to the terminal.”

A replacement aircraft was made available to transport the remaining passengers to Memmingen, the Irish carrier said.

绿地连通性对动植物的生存至关重要。陈精祥建议当局日后分享更长远的发展计划，绿色组织就能提出更全面的建议。像马裕树林附近还有其他树林与绿地，若这些区域日后也会开发，绿色组织就会更大范围地研究连通性问题。

他说：“由于我们的树林碎片化，从宏观视角把不同的栖息地连接起来是非常重要的。如果能更全面地研究，而不仅仅在不同时间点关注个别发展项目的绿地连通性，会比较理想。”

自然爱好者利国伟得知建屋局计划开发马裕树林，在脸书发文，希望政府能考虑保留更大面积的树林，或尽可能延迟开发计划。

利国伟说：“这片树林不仅仅是一棵棵树木。它是一个活的生态系统、一个野生动物庇护处、一片历史文化景观，也是一个户外学堂，子孙后代可以在这里继续体验、欣赏和学习新加坡的自然遗产。”

他还指出，马裕树林虽是一片次生林，但其中大片区域在过去40至50年间基本未受干扰，让丰富而复杂的生态系统得以自然恢复和茂盛。这片树林如今已成为野生动物和多种生物的重要栖息地，也是展现大自然如何在时间和空间的庇护下自我修复的鲜活例证。

吉门营房和斜阳大道的环境影响评估报告书，已在建屋局网站上发布。公众可最迟于8月6日针对报告书内容提供反馈。

两处绿地都有具保育价值动植物

根据环评报告，两处绿地都有具保育价值的动植物。当局在开发绿地前须拟定必要的应对措施，包括移植植物、在施工期间实行环境监测与管理计划，以及设计生态友好的行人过道等，从而把对环境的影响降至最低。

马裕树林里发现极度濒危的庚大利（Bouea macrophylla）、皱叶厚壳桂（Cryptocarya rugulosa）和孔斯黄檀（Dalbergia junghuhnii）等乔木，以及同样具保育价值的海檬树（Cerbera odollam）和达达赫面包果（Artocarpus dadah）等。

在吉门营房发现的极度濒危植物则有波缘榕（Ficus sinuata）和见血封喉树（Antiaris toxicaria）。

两处也都发现了全球极度濒危的黄冠鹎（Straw-headed Bulbul）。两份环评报告也分别记录了在本地属于易危物种的马来渔鸮（Buffy Fish-owl）、凤头鹰雕（Changeable Hawk-eagle）、鹊鸲（Oriental magpie-robin）、紫金鹃（Violet cuckoo）等鸟类。

The parents of Mississippi teen Nolan Wells, who was found dead after going missing following an outing on Horn Island on the Fourth of July, said they don’t believe their son would’ve stayed behind on the island by choice when his friends left by boat.

“No, he wouldn’t. Nolan always stays with the group,” Elmore Wonsley, Nolan’s father, told “CBS Mornings.” “If you be with me, you come back with me. So that I don’t understand, and with me being a parent, if I was in that situation, I would have told them, ‘You’re going to get back on this boat with me because I don’t want to answer to your parents if something happens to you.’”

When directly asked if he believed Nolan was left behind on the island, his father responded, “Yes. I don’t believe he decided to stay on the island by himself. It just doesn’t— that’s not his character.”

Wells, 18, was last seen on July 4 on Horn Island, where he had taken a boat trip with friends to celebrate the holiday, officials said. Wells traveled to the island with his friends on Saturday but did not return to the mainland with them that afternoon, Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said.

He was last seen on the island at 3 p.m., according to attorney Ben Crump’s office. His mother reported him missing later that night and a search began.

His body was discovered Monday off the coast of the island, which is about 10 miles south of the Mississippi mainland, following a search that involved the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the National Park Service.

Dental records confirmed the body was Wells, Jackson County coroner Bruce Lynd told CBS News. An autopsy took place Tuesday, Lynd said, but the results were not immediately made public.

Wells’ body has now been flown to Washington, D.C., for an independent autopsy, according to Crump. Former NFL star and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick facilitated the flight, Crump said.

Ledbetter told The Associated Press that Wells’ friends were cooperating with the investigation.

“There are so many glaring contradictions, that’s why so many people all across America are chiming in, saying this is not adding up,” Crump told “CBS Mornings.” “I mean, you have his friends say he was talking to a young lady, and she said that he said, ‘I’m going to get back on the boat with the boys.’ The boys say, ‘He said that no, I’m going to stay with her.’ I mean, which is it?”

Wells’ mother, Christine, said her son’s phone was with one of his friends who had returned from the island and they went and retrieved it. She believes Snapchat messages were deleted from the phone because there were no photos or videos on the account.

“I know when kids get together for events like that, they’s Snapping,” Christine Wonsley said. “They are making videos, taking pictures, and I’m just like, ‘Where is it?’ Because it hadn’t been 24 hours when we started looking, which usually, with Snapchat, it goes away once you hit that 24-hour mark.”

Crump said independent investigators are looking into whether a voice heard on the video arguing with someone about taking his cellphone is the voice of Wells.

Crump and the Rev. Al Sharpton are expected to hold a press conference with Wells’ parents at noon on Friday to discuss the case and call for a full investigation.

Wells went to Ocean Springs High School and was a rising sophomore on Southwest Mississippi Community College’s football team. Crump said Wells was a good swimmer.
