    Vital Knowledge

The Democrats’ sweeping victories in the midterm elections on Tuesday could buoy opponents of data centers in some parts of the U.S. and slow the spread of the controversial facilities, according to Wall Street analysts.

As of Wednesday afternoon, voters had approved 38 ballot measures restricting data centers in communities across California, Illinois, Maine, Ohio, New York and other states, according to an analysis from political research firm Redbud Consulting. Residents in Harwood, North Dakota, were the only voters to approve a data center.

The election also elevates a number of state and gubernatorial candidates who made stricter regulation of data centers a key part of their campaigns.

The rapid development of data centers around the U.S. to help power artificial intelligence has provoked widespread public backlash. By a margin of more than 2-to-1, more Americans oppose than favor building a new data center in their area, a CBS News pollfound this summer.

    Focus on Texas

Franklin Templeton chief market strategist Stephen Dover predicted that the election results will lead to a “slowdown in data centers being built,” bringing new regulations and costs for their developers.

“For tech investors, the big focus is will these midterm elections slow the pace of the planned 800 to 1,000 data centers across the U.S. fueling the AI Revolution,” Yorkville Ives & Co. technology analyst Dan Ives said in a report. “The answer in our view is a clear YES.”

Ives pointed to Texas, which accounts for 25% to 30% of the data center capacity expected to come online by 2030, as one state that could be affected. Democrat Gina Hinojosa, who defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbottin the race for governor, proposed a temporary ban on data center construction during her campaign.

“Texas is the foundation of the AI buildout in the U.S.,” Ives told CBS News.

Hinojosa’s win over Abbott could stall the addition of 13 gigawatts of data-center power in Texas, according to Gordon Johnson, CEO and founder of the investment adviser GLJ Research.

Abbott had already suspended data center approvals, which makes it easy for Hinojosa to extend the moratorium.

“Texas already has a moratorium — Abbott built it. All the new governor has to do is keep it in place. She doesn’t need a new law to keep data center permits frozen,” Johnson told CBS News.

Keisha Lance Bottoms’ gubernatorial victory in Georgia, the third-largest data center market, also has significant implications for the infrastructure buildout.

Bottoms, who campaigned on pausing new data center construction in the state, told CBS Mornings on Wednesday that she would immediately “sign an executive order for that pause, and then we will determine what else we need to do administratively to take that pause into effect.”

Bottoms also said she plans to review tax incentives offered in Georgia that have spurred data center development.

“So, of course, we are going to have to take a look at what those agreements entail and determine what our remedies are to enact that pause, but I don’t think we’re going to get a lot of pushback across the state,” she said. “Many local governments have already taken that first step.”

    Cooling an overheated sector

Market analyst Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge noted that semiconductor, hardware and other stocks associated with data center construction fell sharply on Wednesday amid investor concerns over permitting delays.

Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, thinks data center developers could face additional requirements to invest in electrical grids and potentially lose tax incentives, thereby raising their costs. She added in a research note that higher development costs for new facilities could “increase the value of existing infrastructure that is already powered, permitted, and operational.”

Massive investment in data centers and the artificial intelligence sector more broadly has helped propel U.S. economic growth and drive stock market gains. In the long term, however, a slower data center buildout is unlikely to hamstring the economy, Dover of Franklin Templeton told CBS News.

“It’s possible to argue that the AI trade and data center buildout was getting overheated, and this could dampen some of the excessive investment that might not have a good return on capital, which investors have questioned anyway,” he said. “So unbridled expansion will be tempered a bit, but probably not a lot.”

Although data center moratoriums may delay construction, they’re unlikely to torpedo capital spending on AI or short-circuit broader growth, according to economists.

“A more restrictive stance toward data centers would stretch the timelines of future projects, and slower construction in the medium to long term wouldn’t necessarily be a bad outcome for the macroeconomy,” analysts with Oxford Economics said in a report.

Hakeem Jeffries declares bid for House speaker after GOP’s midterm massacre

The New York Democrat is officially running to be House speaker in the next Congress

Jeffries says voters don’t want Democrats to ‘get even’ after midterm wins

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” that Democrats should focus on lowering costs after their midterm victories, saying Americans want results rather than retribution.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., is officially running to be Speaker of the House in the next Congress.

It comes after Democrats made historic gains in Tuesday night’s midterm elections, taking back both the House and Senate for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term.

Jeffries sent a letter to fellow House Democrats on Wednesday afternoon congratulating them on their victories and adding, “I write to humbly request your support in connection with my candidacy to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

Jeffries told reporters that he intended to run for the top job in the House during a press conference with his top deputies on Wednesday, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., and House Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar, D-Calif.

DEMOCRAT SEIZE HOUSE CONTROL IN STUNNING BLUE TSUNAMI, VOW RETRIBUTION AGAINST TRUMP ADMIN

Clark and Aguilar also signaled they would run for the No. 2 and No. 3 positions in the House.

And despite a small group of far-left socialists elected to Congress who are expected to pose a headache for Jeffries and other establishment Democrats, he will likely have little trouble winning the speaker’s gavel given the wide majority his party won on Tuesday.

At the time of writing this story, Democrats were projected to win 237 seats compared to 139 for the GOP.

But 59 races are still too close to call, and Jeffries told reporters earlier that he anticipated a total of 255 or more Democrats in the House next year.

In his lengthy letter to colleagues on Wednesday, Jeffries touted past victories and outlined his vision for the next two years.

He pledged to “try to find bipartisan common ground whenever and wherever possible” on the issue of affordability while also criticizing the right’s handling of high cost-of-living.

“Donald Trump and House Republicans promised to lower costs on Day One. They failed. Instead, toxic GOP policies like the Trump tariffs and war in Iran have done the exact opposite,” he wrote.

AMERICA SAW THE BLUE WAVE COMING — BUT DRASTICALLY UNDERESTIMATED THE EXTENT OF THE DEM TSUNAMI

Jeffries also vowed “accountability” for the Trump administration, writing the House “will assume its place as a check and balance on an out-of-control executive branch.”

He suggested Democrats would seek to undo Republicans’ Medicaid cuts, extend enhanced Obamacare tax credits that expired at the beginning of this year, and end Trump’s war in Iran.

“Finally, we must restore classic American values like liberty and justice for all, equal protection under the law, the unfettered right to vote in a representative democracy and our heritage as a nation of immigrants. To that end, I look forward to drawing upon the insights and perspectives of every single part of the Caucus in the days and weeks ahead. House Democrats must deliver dramatic change,” Jeffries wrote.

House Democrats are slated to hold their leadership elections in mid-December.

Meanwhile on the right, House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., will be vying for the role of minority leader in the next Congress.

(Department of Health and Human Services,简称HHS)的工作。

Democrats’ election rout is poised to dramatically reorder federal health policy

    2026-11-04T16:53:00-0500

Democrats’ decisive sweep of the U.S. House and Senate in Tuesday’s elections will reshape the direction of federal health policy — setting the stage for oversight investigations, a legislative push to reverse cuts to the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid, and a focus on lowering costs such as insurance premiums and drug prices.

The conclusive string of victories sets up Democrats to argue that voters — who said in preelection surveys that healthcare affordability was a top concern — have given them a clear mandate to overturn historic cuts President Trump and Republicans made to public healthcare programs.

The breadth of success, including wins by Sen.-elect Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan and other progressives, is likely to embolden some Democrats to forge ahead with ambitious policy proposals such as expanding Medicare, the federal insurance program for people age 65 and older, to cover all Americans. Their plan is to be positioned as the party that prioritizes lowering healthcare costs for the 2028 presidential election.

Party leaders, though, will need buy-in from Mr. Trump to advance any healthcare agenda. While he has veto power, he may be interested in brokering legislative deals as he seeks to cement his legacy and deflect fallout from investigations into his administration’s handling of the war against Iran, mass deportations, contracting scandals, and other controversies.

Democrats were projected to win at least 237 of 435 seats in the House and at least 54 Senate seats as of Wednesday afternoon, according to The Associated Press. Several key races remained unresolved, including Senate contests in Alaska and Mississippi.

As election results continued coming out into early-morning Wednesday, Mr. Trump said in a phone interview with Politico that he had spoken with Democratic Party leaders and that voters had sent a message he must work with them “to make sure things go well for our country.”

“I don’t want to just be sitting there for two years vetoing everything,” Mr. Trump said. “They want to see things happen, too.”

But how Mr. Trump’s new conciliatory position plays out in undoing GOP-led changes, such as new work requirements for many adults enrolled in Medicaid, the state-federal program for low-income and disabled people, remains to be seen. Republicans touted their overhaul of Medicaid and other changes to health programs wrought by their One Big Beautiful Bill Act as signature achievements in midterm campaigns.

Democrats, however, will have to carefully balance their policy moves against their desire to investigate a host of concerns surrounding the nation’s top health official, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has dismantled U.S. vaccine recommendations, gutted the staff of federal health agencies, and cut public health funding.

“Democrats will put forward an expansive healthcare agenda, including reversal of cuts to Medicaid and the ACA, but achieving all of that will be impossible with President Trump still in the White House,” said Larry Levitt, an executive vice president at KFF, a health information nonprofit that includes KFF Health News.

New year, new Congress, new majority

An early order of business for Democrats in 2027 will likely be a legislative push to restore enhanced subsidies that reduced the price millions of people paid for Obamacare health plans. The larger subsidies were created during the covid-19 pandemic, as part of economic relief programs, but ended last year after Mr. Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress declined to extend them.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the current Democratic House leader widely expected to become speaker of the House, told CNN on Wednesday that the party should bring back the subsidies to help struggling families.

“My guess is it would be rolled into a broader budget negotiation or package that may or may not involve other healthcare priorities, like restoring Medicaid cuts or other things that are priorities for Democrats,” said Sabrina Corlette, a co-director of the Center on Health Insurance Reforms at Georgetown University.

If they act decisively, said Leslie Dach, who chairs the Democratic-aligned advocacy group Protect Our Care, Democrats could both renew the ACA’s expired subsidies and extend the enrollment period for 2027 coverage, which ends in most states on Jan. 15, shortly after the new Congress is scheduled to be sworn in.

They would need to act within days of assuming control, Dach said.

“Congress will be sworn in during open enrollment, at a time when people will be having to make difficult and horrific choices about their healthcare, given the further increases in premiums due to the Republicans,” he said.

Premiums for Affordable Care Act benchmark plans are set to increase by an average of 13% for 2027, according to KFF researchers.

With Congress likely to pass another short-term government funding bill in December, the stage will be set for incoming lawmakers to also fight a battle over Medicaid spending cuts in the spring, said Rodney Whitlock, a healthcare consultant who previously worked for Republicans in Congress.

Democrats — many of whom put healthcare affordability at the center of their election campaigns — are now well positioned to place that issue at the center of negotiations with President Trump over federal spending.

“If you’ve got the opportunity for a battle in March over fiscal year funding — and Democrats picking and choosing what they want to make this first battle about with a unified, controlled Congress with the president — damn, doesn’t it scream healthcare?” Whitlock said. “Doesn’t it scream repeal or delay all the Medicaid cuts?”

Allison Orris, a partner at Manatt, advised clients before Election Day not to count on anything changing — even with Democrats in control.

“The White House ultimately will have to sign any legislation, and HR 1 was a signature accomplishment. It will cost money to undo or even just delay changes that were enacted in 2025,” she said, referring to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

    What else could happen?

President Trump is likely to continue leaning heavily into executive actions to shape health policy from the White House. Democrats, meanwhile, will use their control of Congress to exercise oversight of the Trump administration and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, has promised the party will “hold the crooks accountable” by pursuing aggressive oversight of the Trump administration. Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform put out a report in June previewing investigations they may launch.

Specifically, Democrats want to zero in on clandestine drug-pricing dealsMr. Trump has made with pharmaceutical companies in return for relief from certain tariffs. No contracts or paperwork on the agreements have been made public. They also claim he benefited from stock prices that rose when companies received exemptions from price negotiation in Medicare under the 2025 GOP tax and spending law.

By taking control of congressional committees, Democrats will gain subpoena power, an important investigatory tool. But it’s unclear whether they can successfully pry documents from the government or companies because the Department of Justice, under Mr. Trump, is largely in charge of enforcing subpoenas. Nevertheless, subpoenas are likely to be issued regarding investigations into tariffs Trump has imposed and threatened to impose on prescription drugs.

Democratic congressional leaders will also be able to file lawsuits against the Trump administration to challenge the White House’s actions.

Democrats also have telegraphed plans to probe scientific decision-making around such controversial issues as allowing more sales of flavored vapes and White House promotion of the herbicide glyphosate — and any connections these actions have had to political contributions from companies.

Other industry oversight by Democrats would likely focus on preauthorization denials by insurance companies; scrutiny of Medicare Advantage, an alternative program to traditional Medicare run by commercial insurers; and the use of artificial intelligence in medical decision-making.

Also looming is a wider discussion of universal health coverage, including partial steps such as expanding traditional Medicare benefits to include dental and hearing care and lowering the Medicare eligibility age to 60 or younger.

Expanding the program to cover all Americans faces formidable challenges, even if Mr. Trump were open to it. Much of the nation’s healthcare industry — including doctors, hospitals, and insurers — would surely fight any legislative effort, and Democrats have never seriously grappled with the enormous implications of such a proposal for the federal budget, taxes, medical care, and broader society.

Other possible initiatives include implementing a federal solution to address the 10 states that have opted not to fully expand Medicaid to cover lower-income adults, as well as allowing children to remain on their parents’ health insurance policies beyond age 26.

Because the new Congress is not set to be sworn in until January, a lame-duck session through year’s end, for which Republicans retain the majority, will focus on funding the federal government and addressing some health programs set to expire.

One major move Congress is expected to make soon: a confirmation vote for Heidi Overton to lead the Food and Drug Administration, which has been without a top leader since May. Her confirmation is not guaranteed, however, with Democrats uniformly in opposition.

A handful of Republicans have questioned whether she will sufficiently restrict access to medication abortion, while some more moderate Republicans have expressed concerns, too — including Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who questioned whether Overton supports the administration’s changes to vaccine recommendations.

Cassidy lost his seat after Mr. Trump endorsed a Republican primary challenger, Rep. Julia Letlow, who narrowly won election to the Senate on Tuesday.

Other issues enjoy bipartisan support, such as preventing cuts to Medicare payments to doctors, scheduled to begin Jan. 1, and making fixes to the No Surprises Act, a federal law that took effect in 2022 to protect consumers with private insurance from unexpected, out-of-network charges. But movement would be a long shot.

“Everyone gets hyped up for lame ducks, and they’re always a disappointment,” said Doug Holtz-Eakin, an economist and the president of the conservative-leaning American Action Forum.

But come January, Washington will need to find a way to work together to make healthcare more affordable — or risk ire from voters who have consistently ranked it as one of their top issues in recent elections, noted Matt Hogan, a partner at Impact Research, a Democratic polling firm.

When put together, healthcare and prescription drug prices are the top cost concern for voters older than 50, he noted.

Reining in prescription drug prices could be an area with bipartisan support — including from Mr. Trump, who claimed ahead of the midterms that lowering some drug prices was one of his administration’s greatest achievements. Both parties have proposed limits on pharmacy benefit managers, which negotiate drug prices on behalf of insurers and employers; patent restrictions for certain drugs; and the benchmarking of U.S. drug prices against the prices other countries pay.

“This is the third-straight election that’s really been focused on affordability,” Hogan said. “If members of Congress haven’t got the message yet, I expect them to now.”

Redistricting efforts blow up in Republicans’ faces amid historic House losses

Republicans who warned against redrawing congressional maps mid-decade say the strategy amounted to a costly overreach

Republicans’ gambit to stave off election losses by changing congressional maps backfired in most of the country on Tuesday night.

Democrats swept both battleground House seats and areas considered safe GOP territory in an unprecedented midterm election performance, despite the best efforts by Republican-led states to redistrict in multiple states to give their party an edge.

“It was definitely the wrong move,” one House Republican told Fox News Digital. “One of the truisms in politics is never to overreach. We did and that was part of the reason for the backlash.”

Republicans in states that were particularly affected by redistricting had been warning their governors for months that it could be a bad idea, another person told Fox News Digital.

“It’s a bridge too far, and clearly the bridge blew up behind them,” that person said.

In Texas, where the GOP-led state government altered the congressional map to give Republicans an advantage in five districts, Democrats are projected to win at least three.

Reps. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, and Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, managed to hold onto their seats despite Republicans’ efforts, and Democrats also won the newly redrawn 35th Congressional District. The remaining two have not been called.

AMERICA SAW THE BLUE WAVE COMING — BUT DRASTICALLY UNDERESTIMATED THE EXTENT OF THE DEM TSUNAMI

Florida Republicans are on pace to lose all four House seats they drew to favor their party. Incumbent Reps. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., and Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., are projected to win their respective altered districts, along with political newcomer Pia Dandiya in her red-leaning seat.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/clear.gif

Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla., who was expected to be hardest-hit by Sunshine State Republicans’ efforts, is narrowly leading in a race that’s still too close to call.

Overall, however, it’s worth noting that Florida was a bright spot for the GOP overall on Tuesday night. Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., won the race for governor, and all Republican incumbents kept their seats.

Meanwhile, a push in Ohio to make districts held by Reps. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, and Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, more favorable to Republicans, also failed.

And in Alabama, Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Ala., won another term despite his seat also being altered to favor Republicans.

The process of redistricting is traditionally done after a national census, to account for population shifts in each state.

Changing congressional maps mid-decade is a controversial move that saw bipartisan pushback — though both sides ultimately took part.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/clear.gif

Florida Gov-elect Donalds believes ‘frustrations boiled over’ against Republicans on Election Day

Trump-backed House Republican tells ‘Fox & Friends’ that ‘gas prices are a major problem’

Florida Gov.-elect Byron Donalds joins ‘Fox & Friends’ to discuss his historic victory as the state’s first Black governor. Donalds explains his strategy for keeping Florida red, highlighting how residents fleeing blue states contributed to his campaign’s success. The Republican emphasizes his commitment to conservative policies and economic growth for all Floridians.

Florida Governor-elect Byron Donalds told Fox News on Wednesday that he believes Americans’ frustrations about gas and diesel prices “boiled over” against Republicans on Election Day.

The Trump-backed Florida House Republican made the remark after being asked by “Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade why he thinks so many people were unhappy with the first two years of the president’s second term. The Democrats took back control of the House and Senate during the midterms, including flipping governor seats in states such as Texas, Georgia and Ohio.

“I think, look, when you talk to people on the ground, gas prices are a major problem. I think people were looking at the price of gas, the price of diesel, and I think those frustrations boiled over,” Donalds said.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/clear.gif

“I also want to look at, you know, in the United States Senate, there were some opportunities I think that were missed: not passing a Save America Act, not getting some of the key policies done, like putting through President Trump’s border security packages and codifying that into law. I think that stuff frustrated Republicans,” he continued.

“I think if you not just look in Florida, but look around the country, what I’m starting to see is that we have a lot of Republicans who either did not vote or decided to go and vote for Democrats. And I think there’s a frustration out there that we have a responsibility to address,” Donalds added. “And that’s something I’ll be talking about with my colleagues on Capitol Hill when I get back during this lame duck session. We’re also going to be laser-focused on that here in Florida moving forward.”

Donalds attributed his success in the Sunshine State to a robust ground game, noting that his campaign knocked on over 2.2 million doors and centering his election effort “on the issues that mattered to Floridians: insurance costs, housing costs, making sure kids were getting the best education possible.”

“I got to give a thanks to the people of Florida all throughout the state for supporting us. The people in the Panhandle, the Panhandle once again kept Florida as a conservative state. So we’re very grateful to the voters in the Panhandle,” Donalds told “Fox & Friends.”

“But we also want to talk to all the people of Florida. We have a mission. The campaign was not talking points. We are going to make Florida more affordable for the people of our state. We’re going to make sure that our kids can achieve their Florida dream here in Florida,” he added. “It was a tough fought victory last night. But we were able to win and be decisive. And now we get to the job of making sure that our state works for everybody.”

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/donald-trump-black-history-month-feb.-18-2026.jpg

Democrats weren’t the only ones celebrating amid shattering defeats for Republicans in the midterm elections — Iranian leaders also took a victory lap Wednesday.

Iran cast the results — where Democrats made gains even in traditional Republican strongholds — as a rejection of President Donald Trump’s war and a decisive referendum on the economic toll it took on American voters in the months before the election.

“The process of the US’s collapse has accelerated,” Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, posted on an official English language account on X.

“Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message,” Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who has also served as Tehran’s chief negotiator in talks with Washington, posted on X.

“If the US govt betrays their public will to serve international paymasters and blackmailers, it will learn our NO comes with a Nightmare,” Ghalibaf added.

Khamenei, meanwhile, appeared to signal Iran would dig in its heels rather than negotiate with the U.S.

“The Great Satan [the US] wants the surrender of the Iranian nation. The slightest inclination toward submission would cause the immense capital acquired through the blessings brought by the blood of our martyrs and the sacrifices of the entire Iranian nation to be lost,” he wrote in another post on X.

“It would embolden the enemy to launch more wars, and carry out its next acts of aggression.”

The declarations came after Democrats seized control of Congress Tuesday night in a political bloodbath for Republicans, delivering a major rebuke to Trump after a campaign dominated by concerns over affordability and the months-long war with Iran that the president repeatedly promised was nearing its end.

When the attacks began earlier this year, Trump said it would last a weeks — maybe a bit over a month. It has now been raging for more than eight months.

TRUMP CALLS IRAN CONFLICT A ‘SOFT WAR,’ INSISTS US HOLDS THE CARDS AHEAD OF MIDTERM ELECTIONS

Iran was hardly the only issue driving voters to the polls — but the conflict became increasingly intertwined with Americans’ economic concerns as the war sent energy prices higher and impacted the costs of gas and most goods.

Polling ahead of Election Day showed deep public dissatisfaction with the Iran conflict.

Trump himself acknowledged after the results came in that Iran “partly” played a role in Republicans’ losses, even as he continued to defend his decision to go to war.

Vice President JD Vance was much more blunt, writing in a lengthy X post: “The reason we lost is the war.”

“If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so,” he continued. “Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest.”

Other voices in Tehran also claimed vindication in the wake of the results.

    President Donald Trump

Iranian Deputy Parliament Speaker Ali Nikzad called the Republican losses the “aftershocks” of what he described as Trump’s defeat at the hands of Iran, while a senior official in Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s office claimed the war and U.S. support for Israel had brought Republicans an historic electoral defeat.

Trump entered the conflict predicting a short war.

In the opening days of Operation Epic Fury, the president repeatedly said the campaign would take roughly four to six weeks and soon declared U.S. forces were running “substantially ahead” of schedule. American and Israeli strikes quickly eliminated senior Iranian military leaders and battered Tehran’s military infrastructure.

But the war proved far easier to start than to end.

Iran retaliated by choking commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that before the war carried roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply, while launching attacks on energy infrastructure across the Persian Gulf. Shipping through the strait nearly ground to a halt in the early weeks of the conflict, removing millions of barrels of oil from global markets and sending energy prices sharply higher.

Iranian attacks damaged oil and energy facilities in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and elsewhere in the Gulf, further squeezing supplies. By the end of May, more than 1.1 billion barrels of crude that would ordinarily have reached global markets had been disrupted, according to the International Monetary Fund.

What Trump initially described as a matter of weeks instead stretched across much of 2026, as the administration struggled to secure lasting freedom of navigation through Hormuz and Iran retained the ability to threaten commercial shipping and its Gulf neighbors.

The economic consequences followed Americans home.

Oil prices surged after the war began, feeding through to gasoline and other consumer costs just as Republicans headed into a midterm election already dominated by concerns over affordability.

Even after U.S.-led operations restored much of the traffic through Hormuz by the fall, oil flows remained below prewar levels and Iran continued attacking commercial vessels.

The prolonged conflict also complicated Trump’s effort to argue that the war had already accomplished its central objectives. By October, the president was disputing that he had ever promised the entire conflict would end within four to six weeks, saying that timeline referred only to eliminating Iran’s nuclear threat.
