GOP Rep. Rob Bresnahan campaigns on data center limits while investing in industry

Pennsylvania Rep. Rob Bresnahan is promoting a bill to give data center-wary municipalities greater control over whether the facilities can be built, a message featured in a new television ad the Republican congressman is running in the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre area.

But in the past, Bresnahan has taken an overtly friendly stance toward data centers, calling them potential “catalysts for economic growth” in Northeastern Pennsylvania last year.

And he continues to hold investments in a range of companies positioned to benefit from the industry’s continued growth. Those include firms that own and operate data centers, invest in their development and supply infrastructure, and many of the nation’s largest tech firms.

Bresnahan’s campaign did not answer questions about his stock holdings, but campaign spokesperson Samantha Bullock said in a statement: “Favoring local control over data center development does not make someone anti-investment. It shows that they support the will of the people, and in fact it is important and responsible to consider the blue-collar jobs and economic development that might benefit a region like Northeastern Pennsylvania when addressing and legislating this issue.”

Many of Bresnahan’s holdings are in large companies that are part of the S&P 500 and other major stock indices, and the tech and data center-related investments make up just part of his multimillion-dollar investment portfolio. Bresnahan has repeatedly said financial advisers manage his portfolio and he has no input in his trades.

According to a financial disclosure filed in August, Bresnahan owns between roughly $19,005 and $110,000 worth of stock in four companies with direct ties to the data center industry.

Among them are Equinix, Digital Realty Trust and Iron Mountain, which operate large-scale data centers. Bresnahan also owns stock in SBA Communications, a wireless communications company whose subsidiary SBA Edge operates a handful of regional data centers and deploys small, modular data centers.

Bresnahan’s portfolio also includes investments in companies that supply the chips, networking equipment, semiconductor manufacturing tools and software that underpin the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and data centers. According to his financial disclosure, those holdings are worth between roughly $804,024 and $2.04 million.

Those investments include stakes in NVIDIA, Advanced Micro Devices, Micron Technology, Arista Networks, Ciena, Applied Materials, Lam Research, Cadence Design Systems, Synopsys, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Cisco Systems, Broadcom Inc. and Credo Technology. Politico first reported his purchase of Credo stock in January.

And Bresnahan reported holdings in several of the large technology companies driving the industry’s expansion. His disclosure shows between roughly $777,000 and $1.78 million invested in major technology firms that build, operate or lease large amounts of data center capacity. Those holdings include Amazon, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Oracle, all of which have invested heavily in data center infrastructure as demand for AI computing has surged.

Disclosures show Bresnahan also holds between $15,001 and $50,000 in Blackstone Inc., one of the world’s largest investment firms, which in July 2025 announced data center-related energy investments in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Data centers have become one of the most contentious development issues in Pennsylvania, as the artificial intelligence industry’s insatiable need for computing power causes demand for the facilities to surge. An August 2026 poll from Franklin & Marshall College found that nearly four in five Pennsylvania voters opposed having a data center built in their community.

That opposition has grown alongside a surge of proposed development, particularly in Northeastern Pennsylvania, where regional economic development officials said earlier this year that roughly 29 data center projects were under consideration or in planning stages.

Amid that local apprehension, Bresnahan introduced a bill in early June that would give municipalities greater authority over whether data centers can be built in their communities. The bill has not since advanced.

“Northeastern Pennsylvania is our land and our home, but to big data, we’re just land and dollar signs,” Bresnahan said in the new ad, which aired in the region on Wednesday and Thursday, according to AdImpact. “I wrote the bill that makes data centers get local approval before construction and protects our communities when billion dollar corporations try to fight us.”

Last year, Bresnahan struck a markedly different tone. In April 2025, he told the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader he was “pleased to hear that companies are looking to Northeastern Pennsylvania for their data centers, which can serve as catalysts for economic growth and technological innovation for our region as we work towards fostering a 22nd century workforce.”

In a statement to CBS News, Bullock said that Bresnahan’s “legislation is consistent with his longstanding stance in favor of local control.”

Bullock also said that Bresnahan’s Democratic opponent for his House seat, Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti, has “a record on the subject that needs to be scrutinized.” She cited a July Scranton City Council meeting, in which Councilman Sean McAndrew said that a zoning ordinance for data centers initially proposed by Cognetti’s administration had been stalled for months without updates. That same day, Cognetti launched her own ad about the need to regulate data centers.

Cognetti’s latest financial disclosure shows that she does not currently hold any individual stocks, although she has investments in retirement accounts, diversified mutual funds and index funds.

CBS News has reached out to Cognetti’s team for comment.

Financial disclosures show Bresnahan holds an extensive multimillion-dollar portfolio that includes real estate, private business interests, municipal bonds and publicly traded securities. His single largest reported asset is in his family’s company, Kuharchik Construction, at between $5 million and $25 million.

During his 2024 campaign, Bresnahan pledged to support legislation banning congressional stock trading, arguing lawmakers should not be allowed to buy and sell stocks while voting on legislation affecting those companies. After taking office, he introduced his own stock-trading ban bill, but the measure has not advanced. Meanwhile, Bresnahan’s disclosed trades since entering office rank him seventh among members of Congress, according to Capitol Trader, with more than 500 transactions reported.

DETROIT, Mich. — Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed headlined an Islamic conference over Labor Day weekend where the United States was described as an empire in decline, early Islamic conquests were praised and the aftermath of 9/11 was framed around Islamophobia and discrimination.

The event, held annually by the Islamic Society of North America, featured a range of speakers discussing topics from Muslim civic participation to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Over the course of the conference’s speeches and panel discussions, participants took positions that were generally critical of the United States and the broader Western world and expressed opinions that some may regard as extreme.

Fox News Digital attended the event over the weekend, sitting in on many of the panels held on Saturday and Sunday before and after El-Sayed’s speech. The Michigan Democrat is running in one of the most hotly contested Senate races of the 2026 cycle, the outcome of which may decide control of the Senate.

At one panel, “Rising Islamophobia in the U.S.,” a speaker described recently passed legislation that could bar colleges participating in certain commercial boycotts of Israel from receiving some federal higher education funds as “an anti-Muslim bill.”

Shortly after that, a man in the audience wearing a Pakistani flag pin stood up and called for a fatwa to be issued against the bipartisan group of lawmakers who voted for the bill. A fatwa is a religious ruling or opinion that can range from a formal condemnation to, in some cases, a call for or justification of violence.

The legislation was introduced by Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., and co-sponsored by Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J.

After the man called for a fatwa against members of Congress, members of the audience — and one panelist — applauded.

Earlier, during the same discussion, a panelist criticized Congress for moving to censure Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib for making “​​the most lighthearted comments”

Tlaib was censured in part for endorsing the phrase “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” which calls for the destruction of Israel as bounded by the Jordan River in the east and the Mediterranean Sea in the west. Critics characterized the phrase as a call for ethnic cleansing, while the congresswoman defended it as “an aspirational call for freedom, human rights and peaceful coexistence.”

ISNA is a nonprofit Muslim religious organization established in 1981 to provide America’s growing Muslim population with a platform for civic coordination and education. Detroit, where the event took place, is situated in a metropolitan area that has a significant Arab American population concentrated in areas such as Dearborn and Hamtramck.

Panelists also accused billionaire Elon Musk of funding a White supremacist global anti-Muslim movement, suggested that some of the narrative regarding 9/11 taught in American schools has been “debunked” and asserted that Muslims were treated unfairly in the wake of the 2001 attacks.

Criticism of America’s response to 9/11 surfaced repeatedly across the conference’s events and breakout sessions. One speaker asserted that one of the most important things to reflect on as the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches is that “Islamophobia is at an all-time high.” Another called the War on Terror, a series of post-9/11 military operations that claimed the lives of over 7,000 U.S. military personnel, the “War of Terror.”

El-Sayed has sought to moderate his public image since launching his Senate campaign, even as he has maintained ties to prominent socialists and socialist-aligned activists. His attendance at the recent ISNA conference is the latest in a series of associations that have drawn criticism, including ties to Nation of Islam figures, Muslim clerics accused of expressing support for terrorist organizations and activists on the socialist left.

In response to these charges, the Democrat has pointed out that GOP Senate nominee Mike Rogers has links to individuals who echo conspiracy theories about the 2020 election or who have called for bans on gay marriage.

Before the event, El-Sayed’s campaign moved to distance the candidate from other conference speakers.

“Abdul is not affiliated with and does not endorse any other participant of the conference,” a spokeswoman for his campaign told media outlets in the lead-up to the event.

The statement followed reports that he would appear alongside Islamic clerics who defended child marriage and praised U.S.-designated terrorist organizations, including al Qaeda. Of the controversial speakers, only the cleric who had defended child marriage was ultimately disinvited, The Washington Free Beacon previously reported.

ISNA appeared to anticipate scrutiny over some of the speakers it invited to the conference. In the conference venue’s main hallway, the organization posted a prominent sign which says, “ISNA does not endorse the actions of convention participants and explicitly disclaims any responsibility for the views expressed, information provided, or materials displayed, sold or distributed by convention speakers, performers, exhibitors, vendors, or attendees.”

While ISNA sought to distance itself from the controversial views expressed by some conference speakers, the organization itself took actions that also drew scrutiny.

Fox News Digital spoke to three Christian evangelists outside the conference who claimed they were removed from it without warning. Each of them said they were simply having conversations with individuals who wanted to speak with them before they were escorted outside by security.

Attendance at the conference was open to people of all faiths, and registration did not require attendees to be Muslim. The conference also held an interfaith banquet on Sunday.

The disclaimer took on added significance in light of books available for purchase at the conference’s on-site bazaar. Fox News Digital found books that defended Islamic warfare while portraying Christianity as uniquely violent.

“Christians are the last people on earth who should bring the charge of bloodshed and cruelty against followers of any other system, for it is a well-established fact that no religion known to history has such a horrible sanguinary record as church Christianity,” one book sold at the conference reads.

Another book argued that all Islamic warfare is defensive, defended non-Muslims being forced to pay a discriminatory tax and claimed that Christian civilization has killed nearly 200 million people by attributing wars that did not have religious motivations or were not initiated by Christians.

The French Revolution, which was instigated by individuals hostile to Christianity, for instance, is counted toward Christianity’s death count. The Korean War, which was launched by communist North Korea, is also counted toward the body count of Christianity.

The conference also featured advertisements for “Sharia-compliant” mortgages and other financial products.

El-Sayed held a quasi-celebrity status among the conference’s attendees. Campaign buttons were nearly ubiquitous at the conference, and his campaign’s booth was easily the busiest of those located in the main hall, Fox News Digital found.

When the Senate hopeful walked on stage to address the conference, he was greeted with a thunderous standing ovation. Calls of “we love you” rang out from the crowd.

El-Sayed’s speech was ultimately measured and largely focused on unity, representation and the idea that Muslim and American identities are compatible.

“As we leave here tonight, I’ve got a challenge for each and every one of you,” El-Sayed said with a measured cadence reminiscent of former President Barack Obama.

“It’s the question of how you show up in the spaces in which you show up everyday, as wholly and 100% yourself. Because we are a community as Muslim Americans who believe in the rhyming of our Muslim ideals and our American ideals. That those two things are not mutually exclusive, in fact, that at their best being Muslim makes us better Americans and being Muslim enables us to be better Americans.”

But elsewhere at the conference, speakers offered a markedly different assessment of America and its place in the world.

“The world has become multipolar, and we see almost like the fear and insecurity that the empire has at this moment if we think through the lens of the U.S. So, I like to think that we are on the very end of an ending empire,” an academic speaking at a session about the conflict between Israel and Hamas said. “I’m very positive about it.”

The same panelist later argued that referring to the river next to Detroit as the “Detroit River” was an immoral act of colonialism because Native Americans had a different name for the waterway.

In a similar vein, a speaker at one of the conference’s main sessions criticized American foreign policy after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, then credited the “TikTok generation” with mobilizing in favor of Palestinians following the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks.

Some speakers, however, made a clear effort to connect El-Sayed’s socialist project with his Islamic faith.

“Islam historically was not just spread by the instance of Dawah. It was spread by socialism,” said a cleric who would go on to speak positively about early Islamic conquests.

ISNA declined comment. The El-Sayed campaign did not respond to requests for comment after being reached by Fox News Digital Wednesday.

President Donald Trump signed legislation Thursday authorizing the future National Medal of Honor Monument to be located within the Reserve of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., near the Lincoln Memorial, during a ceremony honoring Medal of Honor recipients in Arlington, Texas.

Trump signed the Hershel “Woody” Williams National Medal of Honor Monument Location Act at the National Medal of Honor Museum after touring the museum and meeting more than a dozen recipients.

The legislation does not create the monument itself, which Congress previously authorized in 2021. Instead, it allows the future monument to be located within the Reserve, a protected area of the National Mall that includes some of Washington’s most prominent monuments and memorials.

Trump greeted and shook hands with recipients before taking the stage for the signing ceremony.

“We’re privileged to have with us 15 of the 65 living recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor,” Trump told the audience.

“When I see the recipients of the Congressional Medal, those that are living, many are dead. They died. And they died in battle. Some of the battles are … I read inscriptions of what took place. That level of bravery is incredible,” Trump said.

The act is named for Williams, a Marine who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima and was the last surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient when he died in 2022.

Trump recounted Williams’ heroism before recognizing members of his family who attended the ceremony.

“In the Battle of Iwo Jima, he carved a path to American victory, literally carved a path so soldiers could get in and win through a deadly gantlet of enemy strongholds,” Trump said.

“And back and forth, he went. He just kept going back and forth,” Trump continued. “And one machine gun nest after another. He knocked [them] out, and he did it for hours and hours. People said they’ve never seen anything quite like it.”

National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation Chairman Charlotte Jones said 16 of the nation’s 65 living Medal of Honor recipients were present at the museum Thursday.

“This is not a war museum. This is a museum about heart, about courage, about sacrifice and patriotism,” Jones said.

The museum foundation said the effort to create and locate the monument has received eight votes in Congress over six years, all unanimously. The location act itself also passed both chambers without opposition, according to the foundation.

Jones said that bipartisan support reflected the significance of the Medal of Honor and the values associated with it.

“That is the inspirational power of the Medal of Honor,” Jones said. “And that is why this project matters.”

The future monument will be located near the Lincoln Memorial, though its precise site has not yet been selected. The National Park Service will award the specific site, after which the foundation said it will launch a design competition.

No federal funds will be used to construct the monument, according to the foundation, which will raise the money needed for the project.

Trump also reflected on the sacrifices represented by the recipients gathered for Thursday’s ceremony.

“People like this, they stood tall when their country needed heroes,” Trump said.

“They carried the wounded out of battle and on their own backs and carried them back and forth,” he continued. “They gave their bodies the shields for their brothers at arms. They stood in the way of bullets, purposely standing just like this and taking bullets. And it’s amazing. These are amazing.”

Trump said the future monument, together with the museum, would provide a permanent way to preserve those stories.

The White House told Fox News Digital the signing was intended to recognize the recipients’ service and sacrifice.

“Medal of Honor recipients represent the very best of America. President Trump honored their courage today, and a new monument will ensure the nation never forgets their valor and sacrifice,” White House spokeswoman Liz Huston said.

安徽合肥：外卖员连续送单超四小时 20分钟内不再派单

中国安徽合肥发文提出，外卖员连续送单超过四小时，20分钟内不再派单，保障骑手休息权益。

合肥市市场监管局星期三（9月9日）在微信公众号公布，合肥市市场监管局、市公安局、市商务局联合印发《全市外卖平台和第三方合作单位安全监管规范和安全生产工作指引（试行）》。

据合肥市场监管局介绍，《指引》明确，外卖平台企业需建立完善安全管理体系，依法履行对入网餐饮服务提供者的审查登记义务，推进外卖食品封签全覆盖，并建立配送员身份及健康信息档案，实现全流程可追溯。

平台也需建立疲劳预警机制，配送员连续送单超四小时，系统将发出疲劳提示，且20分钟内不再派单，保障骑手休息权益。

此外，《指引》强调，电动自行车、摩托车等配送车辆须符合国家强制性标准，严禁非法改装，机动车需取得号牌并购买保险，非机动车应依法登记上牌。

平台和第三方合作单位也需定期组织交通安全、食品安全、应急处理等培训，培训记录保存不少于两年，配送员上岗前须通过考核并签订《交通安全承诺书》。

患有传染性疾病或其他不适宜配送服务的疾病时，配送员应暂停上岗，每日上岗前需进行健康自查，出现发热、呕吐等症状应及时报告。

《指引》也要求配送员接单前检查车辆、装备状态，取餐时核对订单信息并检查食安封签完整性，对封签不完整的餐品有权拒绝配送。

针对交通违法行为，《指引》提出联合惩戒机制：配送员一个月内累计发生三次闯红灯、逆向行驶等突出违法行为，将接受强制安全学习、线下培训及三日限单；累计达五次则暂停派单至少七日，纳入重点监管；若发生事故且负同等及以上责任，或屡教不改，将依法清退并纳入“行业黑名单”。同时，对违法率高发的合作站点，平台需约谈警示并降低资源分配，直至取消合作。

《指引》也要求平台及合作单位制定交通事故、食品安全事件应急预案，明确处置流程。发生事故时，配送员需立即上报、保护现场、配合调查，优先救助伤员。

Roy Cooper, former North Carolina governor and a Democratic candidate for the Senate, believes his party should incorporate a big-tent approach to an emerging wave of socialist candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

When asked if he would sign the Promise to America, a repudiation of socialist stances put out by moderate Democrats, Cooper said he wouldn’t.

“I don’t see any need to,” Cooper said in video footage obtained by Fox News Digital.

“I think the party needs a wide spectrum, particularly at a time when the Republican Party is shrinking and having all kinds of loyalty tests. I think we need to have all kinds of folks to be a part of our party.”

Cooper’s comment comes as he wages a bid to fill the seat of retiring Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and win over a historically Republican-leaning state. It also raises questions of whether moderate Democrats believe their platforms can coexist with the aims of the DSA.

The DSA espouses positions like abolishing the U.S. Senate, establishing public ownership of corporations and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to their website.

The group paints a picture of what those policies could look like in practice on its website.

“You have no debt. You don’t need health insurance. You don’t pay a mortgage or have a landlord, because comfortable housing is a human right. Your retirement is publicly funded. Food, education, energy, medicine and transportation aren’t for-profit businesses; they are common goods and utilities,” the group states.

Cooper is not affiliated with or backed by the DSA and has pitched himself as a candidate with an ability to reach across the aisle. His campaign has highlighted his ability to work with a Republican-controlled legislature during his tenure as governor from 2017 to 2025.

In his own words, Cooper has pushed back on questions about being tied to the DSA.

“For the record, no,” he told the New York Times on whether he was a Communist. “I have a record of working across the aisle. The people of North Carolina know that I can be a senator that puts them first. Before power, before party, before politics. I feel confident that at the end of the day, they’ll send me to Washington.”

When asked if Cooper’s platform is at odds with the DSA’s views, Cooper’s campaign declined to comment, noting that his commitments are reserved for his constituents.

“The only pledge Roy makes is to the people of North Carolina. Roy is not a socialist and he will work with anyone, including Republicans, as he has done his entire career to lower costs for hardworking families and fight for North Carolina,” his campaign told Fox News Digital.

Some Republicans are skeptical of that reasoning.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, believes moderates are afraid to challenge their progressive flank as candidates championing the far left have surged in the 2026 midterm primaries.

“That dynamic is dangerous right now because they are terrified of the extreme left. Finding a middle ground on ideological issues right now is … the prospects for success, particularly between now and election day, are not high,” Cruz said at an energy summit hosted by Club for Growth and Arnold Ventures on Thursday.

“Schumer is truly terrified right now,” he added, referring to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

In the video interview, Cooper said he believes the party will only weaken itself in its resistance to the administration if it doesn’t band together.

“Particularly now when we’re in such difficult straits and we’re in a foxhole right now. We’ve all got to be together to take our government back,” Cooper said.

“We could fall to the autocracy, anytime we don’t stick together. So, I don’t see the need signing something,” Cooper said.

Having secured the Democratic nomination, Cooper now heads to the Nov. 3 general election where he faces off against Republican nominee Michael Whatley, the former chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC).

DALLAS — There’s a push in the Senate to turn President Donald Trump’s pitch of $5,000 checks for Americans into a reality, with a couple of caveats along the way.

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, plans to introduce legislation that would codify the dividend checks and wants it done as soon as the upcoming midterm elections are over, when the balance of power could tilt in favor of Democrats.

But the money, Moreno told Fox News Digital, wouldn’t come from taxpayers’ coffers. Instead, he wants to approve certain structural tariffs to act as a “market access fee” that would find its way back into the pockets of Americans.

And it can only be spent in the U.S.

“This dividend would be something that is allowing working Americans to share in the prosperity of this country,” Moreno said. “The money would be used only here in the United States, so it’s not to be used outside the United States. I think it would provide a big economic boost to our economy.”

“So, if you’re a company out there, anywhere in the world, you want to sell your products in America, you either make it here in the United States, or you pay a fee to enter our market,” he continued. “That money goes to funding this one-time dividend.”

Trump floated the plan Wednesday night during the Republicans’ midterm convention in Dallas, where the GOP and several — but not all — vulnerable incumbents and candidates flocked to energize their base and pitch why they should maintain control of Congress.

The cost, however, could be an eye-popping $1.2 trillion. Moreno argued that the cost was worth it and noted that despite the steps Republicans have taken to lower costs, Americans are still feeling the crunch.

“It’s about providing relief,” Moreno said. “It’s acknowledgment that during the Biden years, it was so bad for working families, that, despite what we’ve already done in 18 months, it just isn’t enough to get working families to basically so that they’re level, right?”

“Because they’re underwater right now,” he continued. “I think it’s extremely important for us to understand in elected office that working families are struggling.”

For the plan to work, Republicans would need to maintain their control of both chambers of Congress, and it comes as the nation’s federal deficit skyrocketed to $40 trillion last month and as the GOP has consistently pitched itself as the party of fiscal responsibility against Democrats’ wanton federal spending.

Trump’s plan scored one unlikely ally in House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., leader of a pack of fiscal hawks who routinely scoff at Congress’ inability to tackle the nation’s debt.

“Hardworking American taxpayers probably deserve a tax rebate. We’re gonna have to discuss, you know, how large a rebate that would be. But I think, again, American taxpayers deserve relief from taxation. I think that’s a good idea,” Harris told Fox News Digital in an interview during the GOP midterm convention.

Harris said such a plan “would have to go through Congress,” and he suggested that the party-line budget reconciliation process would be needed to skirt Democratic opposition.

The Senate’s top Republican agreed with Harris.

“It smells very much like a reconciliation issue,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told Fox News Digital.

Thune said Senate Republicans would be willing to work with Trump and his team to get the dividends done, but noted that until Wednesday night it was a proposal that “we hadn’t heard before.” He argued that the idea showed the difference between the GOP and Democrats seeking power.

“I think it illustrates the clear contrast between us and the Democrats about how you want to, how you see government functioning,” Thune said. “And one is in giving more power, control, money in the pockets of the American people, and the other, giving more power to, you know, for people in Washington to tell you how to run your life.”

And Republicans will likely have to rely on reconciliation to do it, given that Democrats are already slamming the idea.

“Donald Trump is a known liar. This is the biggest liar to ever serve in government, period. And look, the dividend is not happening,” Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., told Fox News Digital. “He promised a dividend on tariffs, that didn’t happen. He promised a dividend on Doge, that didn’t happen. He promised some strange new dividend from Air Force One, what, six months ago. That never happened.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., recoiled and slammed the move as emblematic of Trump’s presidency being “so failed and broken, he is resorting to trying to bribe the American people for their votes.”

“An insult to Americans, to democracy, and an admission of how absolutely screwed he is,” Schumer said on X.

Moreno countered that when it comes to dumping tens of billions of dollars outside the U.S., Democrats were all on board but didn’t show the same vigor when it came to seeing money flow back into America.

“So look, at the end of the day, these politicians are all hypocritical. They love helping anybody on earth except for working Americans,” Moreno said. “They love giving money to foreign countries. They love funding endless wars. They love having us solve the entirety of the world’s problems. When it comes to helping working Americans, all of a sudden, there’s no money. What we’re saying is no.”

President Donald Trump’s proposal to send $5,000 checks to American adults if Republicans win both chambers of Congress is forcing Republicans to debate an idea more commonly associated with the Democratic side of the aisle: sending direct government payments to voters.

Called a “socialist vote-buying scheme” by former GOP Rep. Bob Good of Virginia, the so-called Trump Dividend would only be handed down if Republicans keep the House and Senate in November, the president announced at the party’s midterm convention in Dallas.

Good warned that the checks would add to the national debt, which has topped $40 trillion.

The plan could cost more than $1.2 trillion, based on estimates of roughly 240 million eligible adults. The president cannot direct the Treasury to issue the checks without a law providing that authority, so Congress would need to authorize the spending plan.

“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them … I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said during his keynote address Wednesday night.

He compared the payment to a cash distribution from a successful company to its shareholders and said the money would have to be spent domestically.

“The only caveat I have is that the dividend that we’re making must be spent in the United States of America,” Trump said. “We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money.”

“If you keep us in power and allow us to continue to do these things, then you’re going to share in some of the benefit of this incredible wealth that we’re creating in the United States of America,” Vice President JD Vance said after Trump unveiled his new idea.

Conservative commentator Matt Walsh called the plan “flagrant bribery” and said Republicans could help working Americans by allowing them to keep more of their own money through tax cuts.

“Holding it as a carrot on the stick for after the election is just shameless,” Walsh wrote.

Vance and Trump both pointed to tariff revenue as a potential funding source for the payments, and questions emerged over where the money would come from to fund the dividends.

“The reason the Democrats can’t do that is because they don’t do tariffs. They don’t take in money. All they know is poverty,” Trump said Wednesday night.

Treasury data show the federal government collected about $154.4 billion in customs duties from Oct. 1, 2025, through July 31, 2026, which would cover roughly 13% of the estimated $1.2 trillion cost of sending $5,000 checks to about 240 million adults.

The administration has not provided an income threshold for the proposed middle-class payments or explained how much tariff revenue would be dedicated to the program. The remaining cost would have to be covered through other federal revenue, spending reductions or additional borrowing.

Vance also suggested in an interview after the president’s speech Wednesday that the proposal could be limited to middle-class Americans rather than every adult citizen, potentially lowering the cost.

The VP defended the idea as “fundamentally a dividend for American workers,” arguing that tariffs have generated revenue from foreign companies and countries that have taken advantage of American workers.

The proposal’s funding and eligibility questions have fueled criticism from fiscal conservatives, who say the plan would create a new government benefit while adding to the national debt.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said the estimated $1.2 trillion cost of the dividend proposal could instead be used to eliminate taxes for married parents with dependents earning up to $200,000.

“Or maybe some of us think dependency is evil & soul-sucking in all its forms,” Roy wrote in a follow-up post.

That criticism from Republicans reflects a broader conservative argument that tax cuts are preferable to direct payments because they reduce the government’s role rather than create a new reason for Americans to rely on it.

James Fishback, a former Florida gubernatorial candidate who previously proposed a $5,000 DOGE dividend, said his plan would have returned savings generated by spending cuts. Meanwhile, he argued Trump’s proposal would add to the debt without a comparable reduction in government spending.

Investor Joe Lonsdale called the idea “bread and circus bribes.” Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson urged Republican leaders to reject it and focus on reducing the debt.

Other Republicans and Trump allies are moving in the opposite direction.

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, said he would prepare legislation to pass the dividend after the election, while Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., asked voters how they would spend their $5,000.

The reactions show a Republican Party split between treating tariff revenue as money to return to Americans and preserving the party’s traditional emphasis on lower taxes, limited spending and less government dependence.
