Thomas Smith dropped his Michigan House bid last month, but won the GOP primary anyway, beating Trump-backed opponent

    August 5, 2026 / 8:15 PM EDT / CBS News

Thomas Smith won Michigan’s 8th District GOP primary with just over 50% of the vote Tuesday, CBS News projected — even though he had suspended his campaign in mid-July.

Perhaps even more surprisingly: Smith defeated Amir Hassan, who had received President Trump’s endorsement. Mr. Trump even appeared at a campaign rally with Hassan and other Republican candidates in Milford, Michigan, a few days ago.

Smith, who says on his campaign website that he’s a salsa entrepreneur and retired General Motors engineer, struggled with fundraising. In a handwritten letter to the FEC on July 12, he disclosed that he had only raised $1,850 through June 30.

He also appeared to struggle with the FEC’s technology, adding in a postscript, “I could not file this form electronically because I have had no success logging in and have not been able to get a response from the help desk.”

Upon withdrawing from the race, Smith issued a video endorsement for Al Lemmo. Lemmo finished third, behind Hassan.

He has revived his campaign and said in a statement to the Detroit News, “I am humbled and honored that Republicans have chosen me to take the fight to Kristen McDonald Rivet,” the incumbent Democratic congresswoman who holds the seat.

Covering Flint and other parts of Central Michigan, the 8th District is one of 13 House seats where voters elected a Democrat to Congress but favored Mr. Trump for the presidency in 2024.

Hassan, a Navy veteran with a background in federal law enforcement, said he’s “disappointed not defeated” in a post on X.

Hassan is so far the only Trump-endorsed House candidate in this year’s midterm election cycle to lose a primary. Mr. Trump alluded to Hassan’s defeat without mentioning him by name Wednesday.

“I endorsed a lot of candidates, and the end result — I was 28 wins and one loss. It was a little bit of a person that I thought was a good person. Didn’t have much of a chance, but I said, ‘I don’t care, I’m doing it anyway.’”

“Good person, very good, very respected, but nobody knew who the person was,” the president said during a speech in Las Vegas.

Abdul El-Sayed’s Medicare-for-all crusade collides with an awkward contradiction involving his wife

The Michigan Senate candidate’s wife refused Medicare patients in 2025 while he championed healthcare access for all

Left-wing host grills El-Sayed over ‘physician’ claim, questions honesty of Dem Senate candidate

Zeteo host Mehdi Hasan pressed Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed about calling himself a ‘physician’ despite lacking a state medical license, asking whether he ‘told the truth.’

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed has campaigned on passing Medicare-for-all, but his wife’s private psychiatry practice appears to operate outside the insurance system entirely.

El-Sayed, who secured the Democratic nomination for Senate on Wednesday, has argued that “healthcare shouldn’t depend on who signs your paycheck” and demanded that taxpayers pay to “guarantee healthcare from cradle to grave” through Medicare-for-all. Despite this, his wife, Sarah Jukaku, states on her medical practice’s website that she is out of network with all insurance companies, generally requiring patients to pay the practice directly, though some may be eligible for out-of-network reimbursement.

Prior to July 2026, the FAQ section of Jukaku’s website for her practice included the question “do you accept my insurance?” accompanied by the answer “no,” according to The Washington Free Beacon. Her profile on Psychology Today, a popular professional database for therapists and psychiatrists, also at one point noted that she did not accept insurance.

Jukaku operates her own practice where she is the sole physician.

Amid media scrutiny in July, the practice’s website became inaccessible to the public and displayed a message indicating that it was private. Fox News Digital reached Jukaku and her practice multiple times via phone and email but received no response.

It is not rare for psychiatrists to turn away patients on Medicare. A 2022 analysis by KFF found that 40% of psychiatrists did not participate in Medicare, among the highest rate of any medical specialty.

Even as his wife’s psychiatry practice reportedly operates on an out-of-network model, El-Sayed has repeatedly stressed the importance of expanding access to government-backed healthcare.

In a 2020 interview with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, for instance, he stated that “my wife’s a psychiatrist, and we talk about the fact that a lot of folks don’t do psychiatry because it’s not as well recompensed as other practices simply because it’s undervalued in the system.” He went on to argue that the United States needs to build a “system” that “recognizes” the importance of treating “mental illness” due to the prevalence of “serious mental illness” and “death by suicide.”

Years later, at a September 2025 campaign event, El-Sayed lamented that individuals with “serious mental illness” often “fall out of care” due to “transitions in health insurance.”

The couple reported nearly $686,000 in total income in 2025, underscoring the contrast between El-Sayed’s calls for expanded government-backed healthcare and his wife’s out-of-network psychiatry practice.

The couple reported $686,069 in total income and $675,246 in adjusted gross income on two pages of their 2025 tax return released Wednesday. El-Sayed also sports a collection of luxury watches ranging in value from $2,000 to $10,000 apiece.

Though El-Sayed earned a medical degree, he was never a licensed physician, which caused controversy amid allegations that he had claimed to be a practicing doctor.

“He has earned the right to be called ‘doctor’ twice over,” a campaign spokesperson said at the time, alluding to the fact that he received both a medical degree and a doctorate degree in public health.

The El-Sayed campaign and Jukaku did not respond to requests for comment when reached by Fox News Digital.

Dems in the hot seat for skipping crucial hearing on radical group hiding in US: ‘Embarrassment’

A hearing witness said Islamist terror networks operating in US can’t be ignored just because they are ‘politically uncomfortable’

WATCH: Democrats hammered for boycotting hearing on Islamic terrorism in US

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called the empty seats on the Democratic side of the dais an ‘embarrassment’ and accused his absent colleagues of refusing to confront evidence about the Muslim Brotherhood’s alleged network in the United States.

Democratic lawmakers were missing during Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing, skipping a hearing on the Muslim Brotherhood’s alleged network inside the United States and drawing a blistering rebuke from Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.

“You may notice that there are empty chairs on the Democrat side of the dais,” Cruz said as he opened the hearing by pointing out every Democratic member of the subcommittee refused to attend. “The American people should ask themselves why not a single member of the minority decided that a hearing on terrorism was worth their time? It is an embarrassment.”

Cruz tied the Democrats’ boycott to Abdul El-Sayed’s primary victory, arguing the timing helped explain why no Democratic members attended. Cruz accused the party of embracing a candidate who had campaigned alongside left-wing streamer Hasan Piker.

Cruz cited Piker’s past statement that “America deserved 9/11” and asked the witnesses what El-Sayed’s rise said about the direction of the Democratic Party.

HASAN PIKER UNLOADS ON ‘ISLAMOPHOBIC PIECES OF S—‘ DEMOCRATS AS EL-SAYED FACES PARTY UNITY TEST

“Abdul El-Sayed, the son-in-law of a leading member of several Brotherhood groups, won Michigan’s Democrat primary for U.S. Senate. Perfect timing for this hearing. Probably explains why no Democrats are here, and none intend to attend,” Cruz said.

“Because their campaign is now openly embracing terrorist organizations waging war on America.”

The five Democratic members of the subcommittee — senators Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, Alex Padilla of California and Peter Welch of Vermont — announced beforehand that they would not attend. In a joint statement, the senators accused Cruz of staging a “political creepshow” that scapegoated Muslim Americans.

“Scapegoating Muslims may be a Texas Republican strategist’s idea of ‘solid gold’ to whip up their voters, but Democrats have no intention of indulging this political creepshow, particularly after the recent violence targeting places of faith,” they said. “Our focus is the costs families face thanks to rampant, non-stop Trump corruption.”

Blumenthal separately told reporters Wednesday that Democrats refused to attend because the hearing “could well be used as an anti-Muslim, Islamophobia kind of show trial.”

The Connecticut Democrat added that he planned to meet with members of the Muslim community who shared concerns about the Muslim Brotherhood, “which appears to be a terrorist organization,” while advocating for “tolerance and inclusion.”

The offices of Whitehouse and Welch referred Fox News Digital to the joint statement when asked why the senators chose to boycott rather than attend and challenge the witnesses directly. The offices of Hirono and Padilla had not responded by publication time.

Cruz and the hearing’s witnesses rejected the Democrats’ characterization of the proceeding as an attack on Muslims generally.

Lara Burns, a retired FBI special agent who helped lead a terrorism-financing investigation into what was once the largest Muslim charity in the United States, the Holy Land Foundation, warned that Americans should not disregard evidence because it is politically controversial.

“For decades, narratives have been intentionally seeded into public discourse that portray terrorist organizations as resistance movements,” Burns testified before arguing Americans cannot “ignore evidence introduced in federal court simply because that evidence is politically uncomfortable.”

“The history of this network is not in question,” she added. “It was made public decades ago, but few paid attention. Now is the time to pay attention and understand the facts.”

FIRST ON FOX: A top Florida official is slapping Anthony Fauci with a subpoena over alleged “profiting” from federal guidance that hurt businesses, residents.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced Wednesday he has issued an investigative subpoena against former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease Director Anthony Fauci.

The subpoena is part of a state probe into Fauci’s awards, incentives and guidance that impacted Florida’s residents and their businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement comes after Uthmeier, along with Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., pledged to have Fauci investigated at the state level following his Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee hearing last week when he pleaded the Fifth 111 times and references were made to his blanket federal pardon from former President Joe Biden.

“We issued a formal subpoena to Dr. Fauci under Florida state law, seeking a breadth of documents ranging to what he knew when he knew it, his doubts about the safety and efficacy of vaccines that he’s out there promoting, and we’re really focused in on his self-dealing,” Uthmeier announced on Fox News.

“Evidence has come to light that he was trying to personally profit off of this. This is outside of his government duties, his official role: He’s trying to pursue book deals, awards, get connected with high rollers that might help him come into millions and millions of dollars. This is wrong, and it could go towards a deceptive trade practice, fraud, public nuisance, you name it. I think there’s many aspects of Florida law that now are implicated.”

Uthmeier said the activities he is being subpoenaed over were revealed largely through his diary – several hundred pages of writings made on a federal server that Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., released last week.

“We know one award in particular, he made $900,000 on that,” he said, appearing to refer to Fauci receiving approximately that amount from the Dan David Prize from Tel Aviv University.

Uthmeier said that when a bureaucrat is issuing directives and mandates he is privately questioning while also deriving a profit from that work, it raises legal questions.

“It starts as a civil inquiry,” Uthmeier said. “But we’re going to tie in all aspects of Florida common law, things ranging from deceptive trade, fraud, public nuisance, nothing is off the table.”

The subpoena asks for awards Fauci applied to, considered or received from any organization, including those within the state of Florida, relating to the pandemic.

It also asks for information on professional opportunities offered to or considered by Fauci, as well as interactions and communications with Florida businesses, media outlets and communities regarding COVID-19 vaccination sites, social distancing and mask orders, and school closures.

A pair of other states expressed encouragement at the news.

West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey alleged Fauci’s refusal to answer Paul’s questions is “concerning” and that the American people deserve to know whether they were misled or “manipulated.”

“Both my Office and I support Attorney General Uthmeier’s efforts to uncover the truth,” McCuskey said in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill added that the public “deserves answers to about a million questions related to the pandemic, its origins, and the government’s actions in response.”

Murrill alleged Fauci had lied and said that “we just don’t know how much” so.

“But he lied about something as basic as keeping a diary. The truth will come out.”

The moment unfolded after Trump invited Sandra and Brad, a Las Vegas couple, on stage at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa with their two young children as he touted his administration’s Trump Accounts and “no tax on tips” initiatives.

As the child’s mother, Sandra, began to address the crowd, the toddler appeared ready to make a break for it before Trump quickly reached out to stop him from leaving the stage.

    周二对“on!”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized marketing of four new flavored nicotine pouch products this week, bringing to 30 the number of such products the FDA has recently greenlit after considering the public health impact.

Tuesday’s decision on pouches from the brand “on!” is the latest in a series of steps by the Trump administration aimed at boosting this fast-growing sector of the industry. Last week, the White House TikTok account posted a video showcasing the nicotine pouch brand ZYN that included Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine saying the U.S. military consumes “a lot of nicotine.”

In June, the FDA cleared the way for ZYN to market 20 of its products with the favorable new claim that “Using ZYN instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.” The new labeling, which designates it as a “Modified Risk Tobacco Product,” was the first ever granted to a nicotine pouch brand.

Marketing nicotine pouch flavors like Rich Berry, Cappuccino, Citrus and Cinnamon raises particular concerns for health advocates because of their potential appeal to kids.

The pouches create a “profound risk for a nicotine-naive person to get dependent and addicted,” said Dr. Brian King, executive vice president of U.S. programs at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

The brands covered by the FDA’s orders are manufactured by subsidiaries of two of the world’s largest tobacco companies: Philip Morris International, which makes ZYN, and Altria Group, for the “on!” brand.

Altria Group told CBS News in a statement: “No kid should ever use tobacco or nicotine products. Full stop.” They said, “Evidence shows that flavor variety can help make those smoke-free alternatives more appealing to adults seeking to transition away from cigarettes.”

A U.S. spokesperson for Philip Morris International told CBS News, “ZYN is intended as a better alternative for current legal-age nicotine consumers who would otherwise continue to smoke—the most harmful form of consuming nicotine—or use other traditional tobacco products.”

Nicotine pouches represent the fastest growing segment of the U.S. tobacco market. Between January 2023 and August 2025, monthly sales skyrocketedby 250%, CDC Foundation analysis found. Philip Morris International recently openeda $1.2 billion nicotine pouch manufacturing plant in Aurora, Colorado.

    Health concerns

Critics fear the products could be exposing a new generation to the risks of nicotine addiction and have urged more research.

“Just because we don’t have evidence at this point doesn’t mean that there’s no harm,” said Dr. Purnima Kumar, chair of the Department of Periodontics, Oral Medicine, and Dental Hygiene at the University of Michigan.

According to the World Health Organization, 16 countries have banned the sale of nicotine pouches.

The legal age to buy nicotine pouches in the U.S. is 21 years old, but about 460,000 middle and high school students reported using them last year, according to the latest National Youth Tobacco Survey. That makes pouches the second most commonly used form of tobacco product for young people, behind e-cigarettes.

Nicotine pouches contain a nicotine powder or salt that’s derived from the tobacco plant, as well as plant fiber, flavoring, and other chemicals. The nicotine salt allows the nicotine to cross the blood-brain barrier more easily, making higher levels of nicotine more palatable, according to King.

Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, a professor of pediatrics at Stanford University, warns that youth nicotine use can prime the brain toward addictive behavior.

“You’re changing your brain,” Halpern-Felsher said.

There are also cardiovascular concerns, according to Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar, director of the American Heart Association’s Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center at the University of Louisville. He said nicotine causes elevated heart rate and blood pressure, and can constrict blood vessels. As a result, the heart is forced to pump faster and blood circulation is stressed.

“We know that there’s a strong link between nicotine and blood pressure and heart disease, and particularly heart attacks,” said Bhatnagar.

The area where the pouch sits, inside the mouth against the gums, has caught the attention of dentists and oral surgeons.

Kumar said the lining of the mouth responds to physical irritation by thickening and whitening. Beyond the white patches, which disappear when pouch use stops, a lasting concern is gum recession, which is irreversible.

While decades of research have explored the health impacts of tobacco and nicotine, Kumar said the recent rise in popularity of oral nicotine pouches means the science is still catching up.

“More studies are urgently needed,” she said.

The U.S. spokesperson for Philip Morris International told CBS News the harm surrounding cigarette smoke is clear, and the company is “proud to responsibly provide less harmful modern nicotine alternatives to America’s 45 million legal-age nicotine consumers.”

There are more than 7,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke, and more than 70 are linked to cancer. While the company acknowledged nicotine is addictive, it said, “It’s the other harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke that are the primary cause of smoking-related diseases.”

An FDA spokesperson told CBS News that the government’s “modified risk” authorization for ZYN “does not mean these products are safe or risk-free.”

Instead, the agency says it determined, “based on a rigorous scientific review,” that there is evidence the product helps smokers quit cigarettes, so it believes the decision is “appropriate for the protection of the public health under the statutory standard.”

The FDA continues to warn “there is no safe tobacco product, and those who do not use tobacco products should not start.”

King emphasized that if pouches initiate new users, “it could jeopardize the considerable public health progress we’ve made in addressing tobacco product use over the past several decades.”

The FDA is requiring the owner of ZYN to “conduct postmarket surveillance and studies,” and its status as a “Modified Risk Tobacco Product” will expire in five years. The FDA wrote, “If at any point the agency determines that, among other things, the continued marketing of the products as MRTPs no longer benefits the health of the population as a whole, such as if there is a significant increase in youth uptake, the agency may withdraw the orders.”

This story has been updated to include a statement from Altria Group and to identify some additional flavors being used in nicotine pouch products.

Fed’s Cook ready to raise rates if inflation doesn’t start easing

    Summary

Fed’s Cook ready to hike if inflation doesn’t ease
Cook says biggest economic risks are on inflation front
Cook says it may yet be that the Fed need not raise rates

NEW YORK, Aug 5 (Reuters) – Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook said on Wednesday that she’s open to the idea that the central bank may need to raise ‌its short-term interest rate target to deal with “too high” levels of inflation in the U.S. economy.

If inflation doesn’t start to cool off “I am prepared to act by raising rates, if necessary,” Cook said in a speech delivered before the 2026 Economic Luncheon of the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation in Anchorage, Alaska.

The risks to the inflation side of the Fed’s mandate are higher than the risks to its job market goal, Cook said. If the Fed needed to raise rates to tackle strong price pressures, Cook said she would weigh how that potential action would affect the overall economy, noting “I would support an increase, if it becomes necessary, to bring inflation down. It may not.”

Cook also said the Fed is running out of space to deal with inflation given how long it has overshot the 2% target. As measured by the personal consumption expenditures price index, inflation in June versus the same month a year before stood at 3.7%.

Cook warned “Inflation may become entrenched in price- and wage-setting behavior, leading to persistence that would be much harder for us to attack,” adding, “while we might be able to afford to wait for longer in a different environment, we do not have that luxury in this one.”

    HAWKS RISING

Cook was among the officials who voted in favor last week of ‌the central bank keeping its 3.5% to 3.75% federal funds target rate range unchanged despite inflation pressures standing well above the 2% target.

That decision to keep rates steady garnered three dissenting votes from officials who argued that a rate hike was needed now to help bring price pressures down. Over recent days, officials like New York Fed President John Williams and Philadelphia Fed leader Anna Paulson have signaled an openness to raising rates if needed.

In this active mix of Fed commentary, Chairman Kevin Warsh has steadfastly refused to provide guidance about the future of interest rate policy and has had little to say about how he reaches monetary policy decisions.

Cook said of the FOMC meeting that “I felt it was appropriate not to change rates while we see how” inflation trends shape up. She noted that drivers of inflation like tariffs, the Middle East war and investment tied to the artificial intelligence sector, may ease, which would help lower overall price pressures and obviate the case for raising interest rates.

That said, Cook noted “I am firmly committed to restoring price stability.”

The Fed governor also said in her speech that the sour mood of consumers is tied to a number of factors including inflation. She also said that thus far “the most dire predictions about AI job losses have not materialized,” even as risks remain.
