CDC’s acting director says hantavirus is not “a five-alarm fire bell”

    May 11, 2026 / 5:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Jay Bhattacharya, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, defended the federal government’s response to the deadly hantavirus outbreak, saying it doesn’t make sense to sound “a five-alarm fire bell” because the risk to the public is “much, much lower” than what we saw with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s very different than COVID, and we should treat it differently than COVID,” Bhattacharya told “CBS Evening News” anchor Tony Dokoupil on Monday when asked about the lack of daily briefings on the outbreak.

Bhattacharya, who also leads the National Institutes of Health, said hantavirus “is a more deadly disease if you get it,” but added that the “epidemiological risk is very, very different” than COVID.

“Unlike COVID, the way that people get it from person to person is much, much more difficult for that to happen,” he said of the way the virus spreads.

There have been at least three deaths and 10 confirmed or suspected cases of the rare, rodent-borne illness linked to the outbreak on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which had been sailing the Atlantic Ocean.

Eighteen American passengers who were aboard the ship returned to the U.S. on Monday and are being monitored at medical facilities in Nebraska and Georgia.

According to health officials, the hantavirus outbreak identified on the cruise ship is the Andes strain of the virus, which can spread between people but requires prolonged close contact with someone who is ill.

Bhattacharya said the U.S. has been tracking the outbreak for several weeks and is collaborating with state and local health departments, as well as the World Health Organization and foreign governments, on the response.

On communicating the potential danger to the public, Bhattacharya said the CDC does not want to cause unnecessary panic.

“The key thing is that we should be keeping the public aware of when there’s actually threats to them, not causing the public to panic, not speculating about things that haven’t happened, or potentially could in some universe happen,” he said. “And being very, very clear about what we know and don’t know, and also by responding appropriately when there is a risk, just as we’ve done.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the Trump administration this week over last year’s cuts to the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program, which investigates outbreaks and conducts health inspections on cruise ships. Schumer, a Democrat from New York, called the decision “incompetence.”

“The very CDC inspectors and port health workers we need to track this virus, the people whose entire job is to keep deadly diseases off cruise ships and out of our country, Donald Trump fired them. This White House will tell you the risk to Americans is low. How do they know? They have made it impossible to find out,” Schumer said in a statement Sunday.

Bhattacharya told CBS News that in his two and half months in the role leading the CDC, he has seen “no gap at all in the group that manages outbreaks.” Bhattacharya said the inspection team has done an “incredible job.”

Bhattacharya also said the U.S. is prepared for any potential disease outbreaks during the upcoming World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by the U.S., Mexico and Canada in June and July.

“Of course, any time so many people are traveling, there’s always the possibility of various outbreaks or whatnot to happen,” he said. “But the risk is not any different than it is in other World Cups that we’ve managed properly. And the United States has systems in place to make sure that if something happens that we respond appropriately.”

Democratic Strategist to Republicans on Redistricting: “You’re cheating.”

    7:18

Democratic officials in Virginia asked the US Supreme Court on Monday to reinstate a congressional map that would benefit their party ahead of this year’s midterm elections, the latest map drawing appeal to reach the high court amid a flurry of mid-decade redistricting.

The emergency appeal follows a decision from the state Supreme Court last week that voided Democrats’ attempt to redraw Virginia’s US House map via an April referendum in a way that would help Democrats pick up four additional seates. The Democrats are asking the US Supreme Court to effectively put that order on hold for this year’s midterm election.

The decision, the officials said, was “deeply mistaken” and had “profound practical importance to the nation.”

The US Supreme Court is already deeply enmeshed in a flood of redistricting taking place in states across the country as both parties seek to eke an advantage out of House boundaries in the fall election. Several southern states have moved to redraw their maps following a blockbuster decision in late April that severely weakened the scope of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Virginia case will be handled, at least initially, by Chief Justice John Roberts, who oversees emergency appeals from Virginia and other states covered by the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals. Roberts asked for a response in the case by Thursday evening.

Though it was not based on the Voting Rights Act decision, Virginia’s redistricting was nevertheless seen by Democrats as a way to offset the advantage Republicans have picked up from that effort. But the state’s highest court ruled that the process state officials used to create the referendum violated the state constitution.

“The irreparable harm resulting from the Supreme Court of Virginia’s decision is profound and immediate,” Democrats told the US Supreme Court on Monday. “By forcing the commonwealth to conduct its congressional elections using districts different from those adopted by the General Assembly pursuant to a constitutional amendment the people just ratified, the Supreme Court of Virginia has deprived voters, candidates, and the commonwealth of their right to the lawfully enacted congressional districts.”

The redistricting in Virginia would have given Democrats the chance to win as many as four more seats, potentially reducing the state’s GOP representation to a single district.

The emergency appeal was filed by Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, a Democrat, as well as Democratic state lawmakers.

But the appeal is likely to be an uphill fight for the party because the state’s highest court resolved the case based on state, not federal law.

Under the state constitution, the General Assembly must vote twice before sending a proposed constitutional amendment to voters for their consideration, with a general election intervening between those votes. Republicans argued that the first vote to approve the referendum – taken in late October 2025 – did not count because early voting for the general election was well underway.

    Partisan politics at the court?

In their appeal, the Virginia Democrats said the state court misread the federal definition of “election” to include early voting. Interestingly, they have relied on a theory that the justices are considering in another case dealing with mail ballots that arrive after Election Day.

At the same time that it is reviewing the Virginia appeal, the justices have approved a request from Alabama to change its map. State officials there were given permission to use a map the state enacted in 2023 that includes only one district where Black voters have an opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice.

Related article The US Supreme Court on April 1, 2026. Al Drago/Getty Images Supreme Court allows Alabama to eliminate congressional district held by a Black Democrat 1 min read

The appeals come as some of the justices have openly debate the court’s impact on this year’s midterm election. Following the Voting Rights Act decision last month, liberal Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson traded barbs with Justice Samuel Alito over how quickly Louisiana could redraw its map. Jackson accused the court of rolling over its “principles” in pursuit of influencing the November election. Alito fired back, calling that “insulting.” The conservative justice said Jackson’s dissent raised “trivial” and “baseless” arguments.

Days later, Roberts lamented what he framed as a widespread misunderstanding of the Supreme Court’s work as political.

“People think we’re making policy decisions,” Roberts told a conference of attorneys and judges on Wednesday.

“I think they view us as truly political actors,” he said, “which I don’t think is an accurate understanding of what we do.”

Trump ‘seriously considering’ plan to make Venezuela and its $40 trillion in oil permanent part of USA

    May 11, 2026 4:55pm EDT / Fox News

Oil exports from Venezuela have reached over a million barrels per day, the highest level since 2018, under US management

Venezuela resumes commercial ties with US

Fox News correspondent Steve Harrigan reports live from Caracas, discussing Venezuela’s economic reopening and renewed commercial ties with the U.S. This includes a surge in oil exports, reaching a seven-year high of 1.23 million barrels per day. The move follows the U.S. capture of Nicolas Maduro, with American Airlines resuming direct flights to Miami. Experts weigh in on the political and economic implications for both countries.

President Donald Trump is eyeing oil-rich Venezuela as a potential 51st state as officials continue to court oil companies for investments in the South American country following the U.S. intervention that removed President Nicolas Maduro from power.

Trump said in a phone call with Fox News that he is motivated by the estimated $40 trillion value of oil in Venezuela, adding that he is popular with the country’s citizens.

    “Venezuela loves Trump,” Trump said.

After U.S. military officials captured Maduro in January, whom the Justice Department indicted on narco-terrorism charges, Trump said the United States would “run” the country during its transitional period and work with Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez.

In January, Trump pledged to have the U.S. oil industry “up and and running” again in Venezuela. Major energy companies like Exxon and Conoco were expelled from the country nearly 20 years ago when former President Hugo Chavez nationalized the oil industry, leaving Chevron as the only U.S. major oil company with investments in Venezuela.

For months, Cabinet officials and White House energy advisors have held meetings with top oil executives from major companies, urging them to invest in Venezuela.

With the Trump administration now managing Venezuela’s oil sector, exports in April reached more than 1 million barrels per day, the highest level since 2018.

“As the President has said, relations between Venezuela and the United States have been extraordinary. Oil is starting to flow, and large amounts of money, unseen for many years, will soon be helping the great people of Venezuela,” a White House spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “Only President Trump can be credited for the revitalization of this newfound partnership – and the best is yet to come!”

The spokesperson did not provide details about what Trump’s plan to make Venezuela a part of the United States would look like.

Trump’s interest in Venezuela’s oil has been known since Maduro’s ousting. He has argued that securing Venezuela’s oil supplies would help stabilize the country’s economy, a step he deems crucial to establishing a stable democracy.

But in March, Trump posted on Truth Social suggesting that Venezuela would instead become a state.

“Good things are happening to Venezuela lately! I wonder what this magic is all about? STATEHOOD, #51, ANYONE?” Trump posted.

For Trump to annex Venezuela and make it a state, it would require congressional approval and consent from Venezuela, which Rodriguez said would never happen.

“That would never have been considered, because if there is one thing we Venezuelan men and women have, it is that we love our independence process, we love our heroes and heroines of independence,” Rodriguez told reporters on Monday when asked about Trump’s eyes on Venezuela.

Virginia Democrats ask Supreme Court to reinstate congressional map struck down by state high court

    May 11, 2026 / 4:38 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Virginia Democrats asked the Supreme Court on Monday to restore its new voter-approved congressional map that aimed to give Democrats an edge in the upcoming midterm elections, days after it was blocked by the state’s highest court.

In a bid for emergency relief, the state Democratic leaders urged the Supreme Court to pause the Virginia high court’s decision, arguing that it was “deeply mistaken” on issues of federal law. They called the Supreme Court of Virginia’s ruling Friday “judicial defiance of the commonwealth’s Constitution” and state statutes that established new congressional district lines to be used in the 2026 elections.

“By forcing the Commonwealth to conduct its congressional elections using districts different from those adopted by the General Assembly pursuant to a constitutional amendment the people just ratified, the Supreme Court of Virginia has deprived voters, candidates, and the Commonwealth of their right to the lawfully enacted congressional districts,” they wrote in their filing.

Virginia is one of several states to undergo a mid-decade redistricting after Texas reconfigured its House district lines at President Trump’s urging last year. California, North Carolina, Missouri and Florida have since followed suit. The Supreme Court allowed Texas and California to each use the new congressional voting boundaries for this year’s House elections. Texas’ new map is expected to net Republicans five seats, while California’s is set to net Democrats five seats.

In Virginia, voters approved a ballot measure last month that paved the way for the state legislature to adopt a new map that would give Democrats an advantage in 10 House districts and leave just one safe Republican seat. Virginia’s congressional delegation is currently composed of six Democratic lawmakers and five Republicans.

But on Friday, the Supreme Court of Virginia blocked the redistricting plan from taking effect, finding that the legislative process used by Virginia Democrats to place the constitutional amendment on the ballot violated the state constitution.

Lawyers for state Democratic leaders said in the wake of the decision that they planned to file an emergency appeal with the Supreme Court. But it’s unlikely the nation’s highest court will get involved, as it typically does not review state supreme courts’ interpretations of their constitutions.

The ruling by the Supreme Court of Virginia was a significant blow to Democrats’ efforts to counter the Republican push to redraw congressional maps and increase their chances of winning the House in November.

The redistricting efforts were scrambled further after the Supreme Court issued a highly anticipated ruling late last month that weakened the Voting Rights Act. On the heels of that decision, which invalidated Louisiana’s congressional map, Republicans in some Southern states are working to recraft House districts held by Democrats.

Supreme Court allows Alabama to eliminate congressional district held by a Black Democrat

The Supreme Court’s conservative majority on Monday allowed Alabama to revert to a congressional map with one majority-Black district in a sudden ruling that drew a dissent from the court’s three liberal justices.

State officials in Alabama had rushed up to the court late Friday asking it to halt a lower court ruling that has blocked it from using a map it enacted in 2023. It did so based on the court’s blockbuster decision in late April dealing with Louisiana’s congressional map that severely weakened the scope of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Supreme Court’s order, which included no explanation, tosses out a lower court order that blocked the use of the 2023 map.

No vote count was released. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, joined by the court’s other two liberals, said the decision was “inappropriate” and “will cause only confusion as Alabamians begin to vote in the elections scheduled for next week.”
