WASHINGTON, May 13 (Reuters) – The risk from hantavirus to the general public ‌remains very low, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more than 100 staff members actively working on the outbreak, an official with the government health agency said on Wednesday.

“To the American public, please know we are here to protect your health. Based on current information, the risk” to the general population remains low, Dr. David Fitter, the incident manager for the CDC’s hantavirus response, said during a media call.

The Atlanta-based CDC is conducting public health assessments on site in Nebraska, where 16 of the 18 passengers from the cruise ship hit by a hantavirus outbreak were flown to and quarantined on Monday, said Dr. Brendan Jackson, the CDC team lead in ‌Nebraska.

The group had been aboard the MV Hondius, a luxury expedition cruise ship linked to an outbreak of the Andes virus, the only hantavirus species known to be capable of limited person-to-person spread. Hantavirus is usually spread by wild rodents.

The initial test results for one passenger who officials said on Monday had tested positive for hantavirus and was placed in a Nebraska biocontainment unit, were inconclusive, Fitter said.

(CBS News)

(Megan Cerullo)

AI is fabricating citations in biomedical studies, researchers find

    May 13, 2026 / 5:09 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Megan Cerullo

Artificial intelligence is fabricating references to medical research that does not exist, according to recent findings.

A recent audit found that, among millions of biomedical papers, more than 4,000 contained citations to non-existent research, according to an article in The Lancet. Such fabricated citations can undermine the clinical guidelines that health care professionals rely on to provide care, said Maxim Topaz, an associate professor at the Columbia School of Nursing and the study’s lead author.

An audit of millions of biomedical papers found more than 4,000 citations to bogus studies, the researchers said in a recent article published in The Lancet.

Fabricated citations are dangerous because they influence clinical guidelines, which are based on public research that health care professionals follow in providing care, Maxim Topaz, an associate professor at the Columbia School of Nursing and the study’s lead author, told CBS News.

“When those fake references are making it into the literature, they will end up in those guidelines, and that’s how doctors decide how to provide care for you,” he said. “Your doctor could be making decisions around treatment based on studies that never existed.”

    Growing problem

Also troubling is that none of the mistakes Topaz and his team identified have been corrected or retracted, and could still be influencing patient care, he said.

“The rate of fake references showing up in published medical literature is growing,” Topaz added, noting that the number of such erroneous citations has grown 12-fold over the last three years. The fabricated references spanned nearly 3,000 academic papers.

Topaz’s own experience spurred him to investigate the issue. An AI app he was using to help polish one of his own scientific papers inserted a fake citation, he told CBS News. It then slipped through several layers of peer reviews before one sharp-eyed editor caught the phony reference.

“I was mortified, because I’ve been studying AI for the past 15 years, so if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone,” he said.

Such mishaps arise when an author asserts a statement of fact and asks AI for a citation, Topaz explained. “In some cases, AI would slip those in, inadvertently,” he said. “You would hope the facts are accurate, but if they are supported by fabricated citations, you don’t know if the ‘facts’ are accurate.”

In some cases, an AI tool will also cite a real author while inventing research and attributing it to that person. Other times, citations were completely fabricated, Topaz said.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” he said, noting that research across other fields could also be subject to the same issues.

Meanwhile, faux AI-generated scientific citations can “look perfectly real,” Topaz added, who emphasized the importance of researchers rigorously fact-checking their work.

    • Summary
    • Lu Jianwang arrested in 2023 on charges of acting as Chinese agent
    • Prosecutors say Lu operated the station out of a Chinatown office building
    • Lu pleaded not guilty; lawyer says he did not act at Beijing’s direction

NEW YORK, May 13 (Reuters) – A New York man was found guilty on Wednesday of acting as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government after ‌a trial over federal prosecutors’ allegations that he operated a “secret police station” on behalf of Beijing in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood.

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn said Lu Jianwang, 64, should have alerted the U.S. Attorney General that he was a Chinese agent when he helped open the so-called police station in 2022. They also said he helped China’s government locate a pro-democracy activist living in California.

Lu was arrested in April 2023. He had pleaded not guilty to the three felony charges he faced: conspiracy to act as an unregistered foreign agent, acting as an unregistered agent of China, and obstruction of justice.

A jury in Brooklyn federal court reached the verdict after a weeklong trial. Lu faces up to 30 years in prison.

“May today’s verdict send a message to other foreign agents–the FBI maintains its unwavering resolve to reveal and disrupt the clandestine operations of adversarial nations,” said FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Barnacle in an announcement of the verdict.

The Justice Department has in recent years been ramping up probes into what it calls “transnational repression” by U.S. adversaries such as China and Iran to intimidate political opponents living in the United States.

    CHINA CALLS CHARGES FABRICATED

China’s government has called the charges in the case “fabricated” and part of an effort to smear the country’s image. Beijing has said there are centers outside China run by local volunteers, not Chinese police ‌officers, that aim to help Chinese citizens renew documents and offer other services.

In her opening statement on May 6, prosecutor Lindsey Oken said Lu – a naturalized U.S. citizen – had ties with Chinese law enforcement and met with officials who tasked him with opening the station during a trip to China in 2022.

Oken said Lu ran the station out of a nondescript office building in Chinatown. She said he started out by helping Chinese nationals living in New York with renewing driver’s licenses, which alone is a crime if not disclosed to the U.S. government.

Oken said Lu also agreed to help the Chinese government locate a pro-democracy activist living in the United States. Prosecutors did not allege that the activist was harmed.

John Carman, a lawyer for Lu, said his client agreed to open the center to help Chinese nationals who were unable to travel to the country to renew documents due to the COVID pandemic. But Carman said Lu was not tasked with doing so by the Chinese government.

A co-defendant arrested alongside Lu, Chen Jinping, pleaded guilty in 2024 to conspiring to act as an unregistered Chinese agent.

The arrests followed a 2022 investigation published by Spain-based advocacy group Safeguard Defenders that reported China had set up overseas “service stations,” including in New York, that illegally worked with Chinese police to pressure fugitives to return to China.

Body of second U.S. soldier who went missing amid training exercise recovered in Morocco

    May 13, 2026 / 7:11 PM EDT / CBS News

The body of the second U.S. soldier who went missing in Morocco earlier this month, where thousands of troops were participating in an annual training exercise, has been recovered, the U.S. military said Wednesday.

“U.S. Africa Command confirms the recovery of our second Soldier, Spc. Mariyah Collington,” AFRICOM and U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa said in a joint statement. “We mourn her loss and stand with her family and the 10th Army Air & Missile Defense Command community in this moment of grief.”

Collington and 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr. disappeared May 2 in waters off Morocco’s southern coast, near the Cap Draa Training Area, the Army said in a news release. Key’s body was recovered May 9.

“The search that brought her home was a testament to what combined operations look like at their best,” AFRICOM and SETAF-AF said. “Alongside the U.S. Joint Force, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces contributed ground, air, and maritime assets — and more importantly, their full commitment — from the first moment to the last. African Lion builds partnerships for exactly these moments. Morocco proved what those partnerships mean.”

    Spc. Mariyah Collington U.S. Army

Both Key and Collington were in Morocco taking part in a training exercise known as African Lion. Defense officials have previously told CBS News their disappearance did not happen during the training. A preliminary report said the two were part of a group of service members who went on a hike to watch the sunset when a soldier who couldn’t swim fell into the water. Defense officials said the second missing soldier jumped in to attempt a rescue, but was hit by a wave. Other soldiers attempted to rescue the two, but were unsuccessful.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

GOP centrists defy Trump and force future House vote on major Russian sanctions bill

    By Sarah Ferris

A small bloc of GOP lawmakers defied their leadership — and President Donald Trump — by forcing the House to soon take up a major bill to deliver US military support to Ukraine while imposing steep sanctions on Russia.

The GOP-led House is now on track to vote in early June on Congress’ first major pro-Ukraine measure of Trump’s second term, in a rebuke of his handling of the conflict there.

With Trump’s foreign policy focus squarely on Iran in recent months, Russia’s brutal war in Ukraine has continued with little US involvement. Trump has made no tangible progress in his vow to quickly end the conflict upon taking office. And in one recent instance, the president aggravated some members of his party by loosening restrictions on Russian oil to lessen the global price impact of the US war in Iran.

The vote on new Russian sanctions, expected shortly after the House’s Memorial Day recess, is likely to be a major headache for Speaker Mike Johnson and his leadership team in an already difficult political environment where vulnerable lawmakers are eager for the party to address prices at home, rather than weigh in on another global conflict.

It’s not yet clear, however, if GOP leaders will whip against the bill nor whether the White House will attempt to quash the effort, which comes as party leaders are separately attempting to pass a major immigration funding package with little room for error on the floor.

Multiple GOP and Democratic sources predicted the Ukraine bill would pass in the House, but added its fate is uncertain in the Senate. (Several Republicans there have been vocal Ukraine supporters in the past, but it’s not clear if there are enough senators to reach the critical 60-vote threshold.) If Congress does pass the measure, it would stand as lawmakers’ first big move on the Russia-Ukraine war since a contentious supplemental funding bill dating to Joe Biden’s presidency.

But even if the bill fails, GOP supporters say it would send a powerful message to Trump and their party leaders.

California Rep. Kevin Kiley, an independent who frequently votes with the GOP, was the final signature needed on a discharge petition — a procedural tool used to circumvent leadership – to force the vote. He signed on after an intense lobbying effort by his colleagues.

“I’ve been looking at it for quite a while now. I’ve had lots of conversations with folks here, folks in my district and I think the time is right now, given the recent gains you’ve seen by Ukraine, the weakening of Russia’s position – but then also the fact that the ceasefire fell apart and we have renewed hostilities,” Kiley said Wednesday afternoon.

“For diplomacy to work here, we need additional leverage. Congress has the ability to provide that leverage, and this is the way,” he continued.

Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, a GOP centrist and co-chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus, spent months working with Rep. Greg Meeks, a Democrat from New York, to land the necessary 218 signatures to fast-track the bill to the floor without Johnson’s approval.

“A message to our Ukrainian friends: Help is on the way,” Fitzpatrick told CNN on Wednesday, just after Kiley formally signed on.

The measure includes strict sanctions on Russian leaders and institutions, including top banks, oil and mining companies. It also includes 500% tariffs on all Russian goods imported to the US and a ban on imported Russian crude oil.

There’s also new military support for Ukraine, including authorizing $8 billion for arms sales, and an extension of the Biden-era military lend-lease program.

Top lawmakers have agreed to send some US aid to Ukraine in various defense packages, but not without resistance from the White House.

One senior Republican — Sen. Mitch McConnell — published an op-ed last month accusing Pentagon officials of “withholding” funds from Ukraine over the wishes of Congress. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has since said the $400 million has been released.

Kouri Richins sentenced to life without parole in husband’s fentanyl-laced cocktail murder

    May 13, 2026 / 5:29 PM EDT / CBS News

Kouri Richins, the Utah mother found guilty of murdering her husband with a fentanyl-laced cocktail, was sentenced on Wednesday, his birthday, to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Richins notoriously wrote a children’s book about grief after her husband’s death in 2022.

Utah district court Judge Richard Mrazik handed down the sentence after presiding over Richins’ criminal trial, saying someone convicted of Richins’ crimes “is simply too dangerous to ever be free.”

“Kouri Richins was convicted unanimously and beyond a reasonable doubt of attempting to murder Eric Richins — her husband and the father of her three children,” Mrazik said in explaining his decision. “And then, having failed in her first effort, of spending the next 17 days, not changing course, but doubling down, preparing to try again, and ultimately completing the act through the administration of poison. And for what? Money.”

The prosecution consistently sought a sentence of life without parole, mainly leaning on the argument that Richins’ three children “should never worry they will one day encounter her.” The defense, conversely, pushed for a sentence with the possibility of parole.

Richins was also sentenced to one to 15 years on two insurance fraud counts, a maximum of five years for forgery, and five years to life on the attempted murder charge. Mrazik, who announced those sentences prior to the life without parole sentence, said they would be served consecutively.

Richins’ attorney said they plan to appeal the sentence and convictions and asked for an extension of the typical 14-day deadline to file for a new trial, which Mrazik granted, giving them 28 days.

“Today is a somber occasion. It is a day to remember and honor Eric Richins and all those who loved him and feel his loss,” the prosecutors said in a statement following the sentencing.

Richins, who did not testify during her trial, spoke for roughly 30 minutes on Wednesday, mainly addressing her children.

“I know today you don’t want to speak to me and you hate me. That’s OK. When you are ready, I will be here for you,” she said.

Richins, 35, was convicted in March of multiple felony charges, including aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. Prosecutors said she served her late husband, Eric Richins, a Moscow Mule cocktail she had laced with a lethal dose of fentanyl in March 2022 at their home just outside of Park City. Court filings showed the drink contained nearly five times what is considered a deadly amount of the opioid.

Richins also was found guilty of insurance fraud and forgery, after she allegedly signed to close on a multimillion-dollar real estate deal the day after her husband died. She had pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

“I can’t believe that this is real,” Richins added later in her remarks to the court on Wednesday. “Convicted of taking one of the people out of my life that fulfills it the most. I’m still in shock. I’m still in disbelief. Accused and now convicted of such a heinous crime. Convicted of never seeing you boys again.”

Despite her convictions, Richins insisted she is not a murderer, saying, “As much as you’ve been influenced into thinking that I’m a murderer, that I took your dad from you, that is completely wrong. That is an absolute lie.”

“I will not be blamed for something I did not do,” she said, vowing to appeal her conviction.

“So please, I know that right now you may not believe me, that you believe I took dad from you, and that’s OK,” she said. “I still and will always love you, and I’m asking that you please just don’t give up on me. I’m coming home. Not today, not this year, but we’re going to make this right. Our justice system will get this right, although this courtroom can’t seem to. We have a long road ahead, but I will never quit fighting my way home to you boys.”

Prior to her remarks, Richins sat silently for several hours as her late husband’s loved ones read victim impact statements, although she reacted at times with intense facial expressions that seemed to convey strong emotion.

She appeared to smirk and roll her eyes when Eric Richins’ sister, Katie Richins-Benson, gave her statement before the court. Asking the judge for the most severe sentence, Richins-Benson said in tearful remarks that Richins had prohibited her three sons from communicating with her husband’s family for 15 months after his death. Richins-Benson also said her brother believed Richins was “evil.”

Richins’ three sons also pressed the judge to bring the maximum sentence in impact statements read by counselors on their behalf.

“You only cared about yourself and your stupid boyfriends,” read one of them, in which the child referred to in court by the initials “A.R.” said he would not feel safe if she were out of prison. The child with the initials “C.R.” accused Richins of a litany of offenses, including “killing almost all of his animals,” and potentially trying to poison him with fentanyl, too, causing him to have a seizure.

Richins’ attorneys had declined to comment ahead of her sentencing hearing, which falls on the day her husband would have turned 44 years old, The Associated Press reported.

Ahead of her sentencing, Richins’ sons said they’d feel unsafe if their mother were ever released from prison. The sons’ statements came in a memo from prosecutors urging Judge Richard Mrazik to sentence Richins to life without parole, according to AP.

Before her arrest in May 2023, Richins was garnering attention for a children’s picture book she authored called “Are You with Me?” that centered on ways to cope with the loss of a loved one. She appeared on a local Utah television station while promoting it, and described the challenges that she and her three sons confronted while navigating their own personal grief. In that appearance, Richins had said their father’s passing was unexpected.

The trial began in February in Park City and lasted for about three weeks, including 13 days of testimony. Richins’ defense team did not call any witnesses, and she declined to testify at the trial. The prosecution painted her as a killer set on taking her husband’s money.

Kouri Richins faces a slew of other criminal charges related to her financial dealings in a separate case that has not yet gone to trial, according to The Associated Press.

Justice Department considers settling Trump’s $10 billion IRS leak lawsuit

The Justice Department is discussing whether to settle President Donald Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service in the coming days, according to two sources familiar.

Among the options being discussed internally is whether a settlement would include a provision on the IRS dropping audits of the president and members of his family, as well as audits of the family’s businesses, the people said.

One of the people familiar said that the possibility is one of many options under consideration, and that no firm decisions have been made. It remains unclear if a monetary settlement is being considered. If it is, it could result in the Trump Justice Department making a payment to the president himself — raising unprecedented ethical questions.

“The IRS wrongly allowed a rogue, politically-motivated employee to leak private and confidential information about President Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization to the New York Times, ProPublica and other left-wing news outlets, which was then illegally released to millions of people,” a spokesman for Trump’s legal team told CNN in a statement. “President Trump continues to hold those who wrong America and Americans accountable.”

CNN reached out the IRS, which referred to the Justice Department for comment. The Justice Department declined to comment. The New York Times was first to report the potential term being floated in the settlement talks.

Trump sued the US Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department in January for at least $10 billion, accusing the agency of an unauthorized leak of his tax returns during his first administration.

The suit was filed in federal court in Florida. Trump, who filed the suit alongside his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, is suing personally, not in his official capacity as president.

The lawsuit alleged that the government failed to protect Trump and the Trump Organization’s confidential tax information, which was leaked to the press by Charles Littlejohn, a former IRS contractor.

Littlejohn, who worked as a government contractor at Booz Allen Hamilton, illegally obtained and disclosed Trump’s tax returns to publications like the New York Times and ProPublica, the suit alleged. He has since been sentenced to five years in prison.

The outside settlement talks come as the lawsuit has had a skeptical reception in court.

A federal judge last month questioned the constitutionality of Trump’s lawsuit, ordering a hearing to determine whether the president can sue federal agencies that he oversees.

Florida District Judge Kathleen M. Williams said it is unclear whether Trump and the agencies are “sufficiently adverse to each other” and ordered both sides to provide more information on the relationship.

“Although President Trump avers that he is bringing this lawsuit in his personal capacity, he is the sitting president and his named adversaries are entities whose decisions are subject to his direction,” Williams, an Obama appointee, said at the time.

    A series of settlements

The Justice Department’s settlement talks come as it has already settled other lawsuits brought by Trump allies.

In April, the Justice Department settled a lawsuit brought by former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, who sued the DOJ and FBI over flawed government surveillance he faced due to his Russian contacts in 2016, according to a filing with the Supreme Court.

In March, it settled a lawsuit with Michael Flynn, awarding him over a million dollars following what he said was a wrongful prosecution.

Flynn sued the government for $50 million, alleging that the FBI tried to entrap him in the early days of the Trump administration.

    • Meta

Meta challenges New Mexico’s $3.7 billion plan for teen mental health in social media trial

    • Meta argues that it’s being asked to pay for too broad a program
    • State experts link teen mental health crisis to social media use
    • The state rested its case on Wednesday

May 13 (Reuters) – A lawyer for Meta Platforms on Wednesday argued that New Mexico’s $3.7 billion proposal to address teen mental health harms goes too far, saying it would force ‌the company to pay for mental health care for all of the state’s teenagers and not just those it allegedly hurt.

Meta attorney Alex Parkinson questioned the state’s expert witness, economist Kelly O’Connell, during testimony on the eighth day of a trial over the state’s lawsuit accusing Meta of designing its platforms to addict young users. Parkinson focused on O’Connell’s cost estimate for a 15-year mental health program that New Mexico is arguing Meta must fund to counteract the company’s harm to young users.

Parkinson asked O’Connell whether she understood that the program would have Meta pay for mental health care for all teens in the state, regardless of what caused their problems.

“You haven’t at all attempted to determine what proportion of the 3.7 billion is completely unrelated to social media?” Parkinson asked O’Connell, who said she hadn’t.

O’Connell’s calculation of the $3.7 billion figure includes more than $2.8 billion specifically for treating mental health problems in youth between the ages of 11 and 17 in the state. The program also covers public awareness campaigns, screenings and referrals.

In the trial, which does not involve a jury, the state is asking Santa Fe Judge Bryan Biedscheid to decide whether the company’s platforms have created a “public nuisance” under New Mexico law — a finding that would allow him to order wide-ranging remedies aimed at curbing alleged harms to young users.

The case stems from ‌a lawsuit filed by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, a Democrat, accusing Meta of designing its platforms to addict young users and failing to protect children from sexual exploitation.

The trial, which Reuters is monitoring on Courtroom View Network, is the second phase of New Mexico’s lawsuit. A jury in March found Meta violated the state’s consumer protection law by misrepresenting the safety of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp for young users and ordered the company to pay $375 million in damages. Meta has said it will appeal that verdict.

The state has put forward experts who testified that New Mexico teens are experiencing a mental health crisis and connected increases in sleep deprivation, disordered eating and suicide risk factors to social media use.

The state rested its case on Wednesday in this phase of the trial, which began on May 4. Meta will present its own witnesses over the coming days, and Biedscheid will issue a written ruling at a later date.

In addition to funding the mental health program, New Mexico is asking Biedscheid to order Meta to make changes to its platforms. Those changes could include age verification, redesigning its algorithm to promote quality content for minors, and ending autoplay and infinite scroll for minors, according to court filings.

New Mexico’s case is among thousands of lawsuits accusing Meta and other social media companies of designing products to be addictive to young people, contributing to a nationwide mental health crisis.
