Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has publicly criticized the Trump administration’s inaction on artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, stating it is pushing the globe into great danger.

At the “Future of AI” summit hosted by the UK’s Financial Times, Gates pointed out that the most immediate risk today is bad actors using AI tools to manufacture bioweapons or launch full network attacks, particularly as security safeguards for some so-called “open” models are extremely easy to bypass.

He emphasized that efforts by multiple countries to build regulatory frameworks are stalling due to the White House’s inaction: “Without U.S. participation, efforts yield very little. How many more tragedies need to occur before they change their stance?”

Amid rapid technological advancement, Trump has always opposed strong executive intervention, not only dismissing G20 AI guidelines as a “globalist conspiracy” but also blindly supporting self-regulation in the tech sector.

In response, Gates refuted that industry self-regulation is completely ineffective given the market competition among multiple tech giants, adding that only government intervention can break the impasse. He urged the U.S. to establish model safety standards and take the lead in building large-scale monitoring systems in air, sewage, and blood to intercept potential infections as early as possible.

Gates also revealed that both OpenAI and Anthropic will launch new models this year, with two major releases coming in 2027, noting that “model runaway” is becoming an urgent real-world crisis.

In addition to calling for strengthened third-party audits, Gates has also proposed taxing ultra-wealthy individuals amid AI’s disruption to society, while accelerating AI-driven drug development and other medical applications.
