一位知情人士周日对美国有线电视新闻网（CNN）表示，总统的女婿、资深顾问贾里德·库什纳近日与众议院少数党领袖哈基姆·杰弗里斯举行会面，探讨白宫与民主党在关键议题上开展合作的方式。
该消息人士称，两人在纽约举行了私下会晤，讨论了移民、住房和生活成本等关键议题。库什纳与杰弗里斯此前曾在《第一步法案》的推进中展开合作，这项2018年获得两党支持通过的法案旨在减少联邦监狱人口，其中包括放宽特定罪行的强制性最低刑期要求。
此次会晤于数周前举行，《纽约时报》已于周日率先报道了此事。会晤期间，库什纳提议杰弗里斯也与白宫办公厅主任苏西·瓦尔斯会面。

如果民主党在中期选举中赢得众议院多数席位，杰弗里斯有望成为众议院议长，目前他已是该职位的热门人选。由于唐纳德·特朗普总统的支持率因伊朗局势战争以及不断攀升的国家债务（近期已达40万亿美元）引发的经济担忧持续下滑，民主党对赢得多数席位的前景抱有信心。
“美国民众期待大刀阔斧的变革，这正是众议院民主党人将兑现的承诺，”杰弗里斯在向CNN提供的一份声明中说道，“在与特朗普政府的每一次沟通中，我们都将明确传达：生活负担危机绝非骗局，唯有彻底的政策变革才是可接受的解决方案。”
众议院共和党议长迈克·约翰逊周日淡化了此次会晤的意义，称这并不意味着特朗普承认未来两年他可能不得不与民主党多数派合作。
“我可以明确告诉你们，我们将打破历史惯例，守住众议院多数席位，”约翰逊在福克斯新闻节目中表示，他解释称共和党仍有机会维持对民主党微弱的席位优势。
约翰逊称库什纳“是个聪明人，懂得两面下注”。但这位共和党领袖补充道，总统的女婿并未参与白宫的“日常”运作。
杰弗里斯已成为特朗普第二任期内直言不讳的反对者，他经常在电视采访和新闻发布会上抨击总统。他并未排除如果明年众议院民主党人赢得多数席位后弹劾特朗普的可能性，但他多次强调，民主党的工作重点是降低美国民众的生活成本，他认为这些成本上涨是由总统的政策推动的。

Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and close adviser, recently met with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to discuss ways the White House can collaborate with Democrats on key issues, a source familiar with the meeting told CNN on Sunday.
The pair gathered privately in New York to discuss such key issues as immigration, housing and the cost of living, the source said. Kushner and Jeffries had previously worked together on The Step Act, a law passed with bipartisan support in 2018 that sought to reduce the federal prison population by, among other things, easing mandatory minimum sentencing requirements for certain violations.
During their meeting, which occurred several weeks ago and was first reported by The New York Times on Sunday, Kushner suggested that Jeffries should also meet with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles.
CNN has reached out to the White House for comment on the meeting.
Jeffries has emerged as the front-runner to become House speaker if Democrats win the majority in the midterms. The party is bullish on that possibility, due to President Donald Trump’s sinking approval ratings amid the Iran war and economic concerns underscored by the escalating national debt, which recently reached $40 trillion.
“The American people want bold change and that’s what House Democrats will deliver,” Jeffries said in a statement provided to CNN. “In every conversation that we have with the Trump administration, we will continue to make it explicitly clear that the affordability crisis is not a hoax and nothing short of transformational policy change is acceptable.”
GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday downplayed the notion that the meeting signaled an acknowledgement by Trump that he might have to work with a Democratic majority during the next two years.
“I’m telling you, we’re going to defy history and hold this majority,” Johnson said on Fox News, explaining that Republicans see a path toward keeping their razor thin margin over Democrats.
Kushner, he said, “is a smart guy and he hedges his bets.” But, the GOP leader added, the president’s son-in-law is not involved in “day-to-day” White House operations.
Jeffries has emerged as a vocal opponent of Trump in his second term, frequently bashing the president in television interviews and press conferences. He has not ruled out potentially impeaching Trump if House Democrats hold the majority next year, though he has repeatedly insisted the party is focused on lowering costs for Americans that he argues have been driven up by the president’s policies.
