Progressive activist William Lawrence boxed out his two moderate primary opponents to win the Democratic nomination in Michigan’s 7th district, which President Trump carried in 2024. But until last month he says he was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America—a membership he let lapse, he says, to prove to his voters that he is focused on “the issues that bring us together.”
