Accused Oregon serial killer charged with murdering 5 women: “My sister isn’t here anymore”

    2026-06-04 10:10 EDT / CBS/AP

A man accused of killing several women and dumping their bodies in the Portland area was arraigned Wednesday on a fifth murder charge.

Jesse Calhoun’s defense attorney entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf in a Portland courtroom where victims’ family members were present. The hearing, during which Calhoun remained silent, came after he was indicted last week on the most recent second-degree murder charge over the death of Ashley Real, 22, in 2023.

Calhoun has now been charged with five counts of second-degree murder for five victims, along with four counts of abuse of a corpse. The victims’ bodies were found over multiple months in early 2023, sparking concern at the time that a serial killer might be targeting young women in the region.

Calhoun was previously indicted in the deaths of Kristin Smith, 22; Charity Perry, 24; Bridget Webster, 31; and Joanna Speaks, 32.

Real, Perry, Webster and Smith were found in northwestern Oregon, while Speaks was found near an abandoned barn in southwestern Washington. Their bodies were found in a roughly 100-mile radius, including in wooded areas and in a culvert.

Real’s father, Jose Real, previously told The Associated Press that he had called police in November 2022 after his daughter showed up at his Portland home crying. She had marks on her throat, he said, and told him that she had been choked by Calhoun. Real said he took her to a hospital and that an initial police report was taken, but the case was then transferred to a different jurisdiction, where it became difficult to reach those overseeing it.

Real’s body was found in May 2023 by a man who was fishing in a pond southeast of Portland.

Calhoun was arrested in June 2023 on unrelated parole warrants and then indicted in 2024 and 2025 in the other four women’s deaths. The initial indictment came weeks before Calhoun was due to be released from state prison, where he was returned in 2023 to finish serving a four-year term for assaulting a police officer, trying to strangle a police dog, burglary and other charges.

He was initially released in 2021, a year early, because he helped fight wildfires in 2020 under a prison firefighting program. Gov. Tina Kotek revoked the commutation in 2023 when police began investigating him in the deaths.

A trial date has yet to be set. Calhoun remains in custody at the Multnomah County Detention Center. His defense attorneys declined to comment.

Jose Real was in tears as he spoke with reporters after the hearing. He spoke through a Spanish interpreter, according to CBS affiliate KOIN.

“I never thought or imagined that my family would experience something like this,” he said. “I’m still really grateful with God because now there’s someone responsible. He’s named for what happened to my daughter.”

Masciell Real, Ashley’s sister, also spoke through tears.

“My sister isn’t here anymore and he’s allowed to be behind bars, maybe with still a life,” she said, according to KOIN. “But my sister doesn’t have a life anymore. And she was … her dignity was taken away from this.”

Relatives of other victims were also present for the arraignment. Diana Allen, the mother of Charity Perry, told KOIN that it was the first time she had been in the room with Calhoun.

“So the strong part is that I’m here for the other families, and that gets to release me from the emotional attachment,” Allen said. “The other side is, do you have any idea, as a parent, what it is not to fly across that room and show him what a woman can do?”

US Postal Service not expected to run out of cash next year, official says

    • USPS faces financial issues despite recent relief measures
    • USPS reforms did not stop losses, slowed mail delivery, official says
    • Postmaster General warned USPS may be out of cash as soon as February

WASHINGTON, June 4 (Reuters) – The ‌U.S. Postal Regulatory Commission told lawmakers on Thursday it does not believe the financially troubled Postal Service will run out of cash next year, but it faces significant issues that must be addressed.

Robert Taub, vice chair of the commission responsible for the Postal Service’s oversight, told a U.S. House subcommittee that recent actions to provide financial relief have extended the time period before USPS’s “reported insolvency” by at least another several years if it makes key decisions about its expenditures.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

“Given the Postal Service’s severe and worsening financial situation, we as a nation must respond. I do not believe that we can leave it up to the Postal Service to save itself,” Taub’s testimony said.

Postmaster General David Steiner has warned USPS could run out of cash as soon as February.

Taub also said the reform plan USPS adopted six years ago has not halted ongoing losses and has “consistently slowed mail delivery across the United States, specifically in rural areas.”

One key question ‌is whether USPS should continue to deliver to 170 million addresses six days a week, which costs $3.4 billion annually.

USPS has reported net losses of about $120 billion since 2007, as first-class mail, its most profitable product, has fallen sharply with the shift to digital communication even as the agency must maintain costly nationwide delivery operations.

USPS said last week it was suspending non-essential spending on travel, office supplies and consultants. Steiner told officers in a memo the moves were “to protect core operations and ensure we can continue meeting all essential obligations.”

Last month, the Postal Service said it would temporarily suspend employer payments for a federal pension program and plans to raise the price of first-class mail stamps to 82 cents from 78 cents, effective July 12.

Suspending employee pension contributions will conserve $2.5 billion through September 30 and potentially $15 billion through 2030.

In March, Steiner said the Postal Service was hiring restructuring advisers to help address its financial troubles and has asked Congress for additional reforms.

FIRST ON FOX: As the Trump administration continues negotiations with Iran, it is also taking its message directly to the Iranian people.

In a video obtained by Fox News Digital, the State Department bypasses Iran’s leadership to tell ordinary Iranians that their country’s problems stem not from its citizens, but from a government that “chooses confrontation over opportunity.”

“The Iranian people are not the problem. A leadership that fears openness and chooses confrontation over opportunity is the problem.”

The video will run Thursday in Persian language outlets Iran International and BBC Persian.

IRAN PROTESTERS EMBOLDENED BY TRUMP ADMIN’S PERSIAN MESSAGING AFTER OBAMA-BIDEN INACTION, ACTIVISTS SAY

The video is likely to be viewed by some regime opponents as symbolic support at a time when many critics of the Islamic Republic have called for more concrete measures from Washington.

It also comes as millions of Iranians regain access to the outside world after months of digital isolation.

Iranian authorities recently began restoring internet access following an 88-day nationwide blackout that was initially imposed during anti-government protests and later expanded after the outbreak of war with the United States and Israel. Internet monitoring groups say connectivity has improved, though significant restrictions remain in place across the country.

Earlier in 2026, anti-government protests spread across the country and evolved into one of the most serious challenges to the Islamic Republic in decades before being crushed by a sweeping government crackdown. Protesters faced mass arrests, internet blackouts and lethal force from security services, according to human rights groups and international monitors.

Iran’s opposition remains fragmented, divided among monarchists, reformists, ethnic movements and other factions, and intelligence assessments have questioned whether any unified alternative is positioned to take power should the Islamic Republic fall.

Throughout the new video, the State Department, through a narrator speaking Farsi, emphasizes themes of freedom, opportunity and self-determination, portraying the Iranian people as capable of building a more prosperous future while suggesting the country’s leadership has prevented it from reaching its full potential.

“When Americans see Iran, we see a great people with a rich history and a generation full of talent and potential,” the video’s translation says. “Today, millions of Iranians want what people everywhere want: opportunity, stability, a chance to speak freely, and live without fear. Iran has the talent, resources, and educated young people to be among the world’s most prosperous nations.”

“The future of Iran should be shaped by its people, not by intimidation or fear. It should be built by the people themselves,” the video goes on. “Iran’s story is still being written. Its best chapter may still lie ahead.”

MIKE POMPEO: OPERATION EPIC FURY IS RIGHTEOUS — AND REGIME CHANGE MUST FOLLOW

“The Iranian people deserve to hear the truth directly, without the lies and propaganda of a regime that has spent decades violently suppressing dissent, enriching itself, and ignoring the needs of its own citizens,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Piggott told Fox News Digital about the video.

“Speaking directly to the people of Iran is important because our disagreement has never been with them, it has always been with a regime that prioritizes funding terror and pursuing a nuclear weapon over the aspirations, prosperity, and freedom of the Iranian people. By speaking directly to them, we’re making clear that America stands with the people of Iran.”

The outreach comes as U.S. and Iranian officials continue discussing a potential agreement, creating the unusual dynamic of Washington negotiating with Iran’s government while simultaneously telling its citizens that the regime is holding the country back.

The message echoes comments from President Donald Trump earlier in 2026 suggesting that meaningful political change in Iran would ultimately have to come from within the country.

“We hope the Iranian people can overthrow the government,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on March 2, shortly after the U.S. launched offensive strikes known as Operation Epic Fury.

While the Trump administration has publicly maintained that negotiations with Tehran remain active, significant obstacles remain, including Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief and security arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.

Rubio told lawmakers in recent days that any agreement would require major Iranian concessions and insisted the administration would not ease sanctions simply in exchange for reopening the strategic waterway.

The protests featured prominently in administration messaging at the time, with Trump and other senior officials voicing support for demonstrators and drawing a distinction between the Iranian people and the country’s leadership.

    image

Guide missing for a week on Mount Everest found crawling to base camp: “Nothing short of a miracle”

    2026-06-04T08:35:00-0400 / CBS/AP

A Sherpa guide who went missing last week while descending Mount Everest with a client has been found alive, according to the crew that led the search for him. His survival amid treacherous conditions on the world’s tallest peak has been hailed as “a miracle” by the mountaineering community in Nepal.

Dawa Sherpa, 52, was located while crawling down to base camp and has since been reunited with his family, who said they had given up hope for his return.

“This is nothing short of a miracle surviving so many days on the mountains facing such harsh condition,” said Ang Tshering Sherpa, a leading figure in the community. “Sherpas are built tough growing up in the mountains. … If there was someone else in his place they might not have survived.”

Dawa was last seen around May 29 descending the mountain, but he did not reach base camp even though his client did. The pair were among the last climbers on the mountain as the climbing season came to an end and the route was dismantled.

Dawa was located by a cleaning crew Thursday morning as he was crawling down the snowy slopes around the Khumbu Icefall, just above base camp, said Pemba Sherpa of 8K Expeditions, which coordinated the search.

He was quickly carried down to safety and given food and water. A rescue helicopter flew him to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu, where his wife and daughter, who already had begun funeral rituals for him, were waiting.

“We first heard that he was still alive on the local news and from a person we know who called with the news that … he is being brought down,” said his wife, Damu Sherpa.

Though Dawa had been missing since last week, there was a delay in organizing a search team. No reasons were given for the delay, but when helicopters were finally sent to look for him, they could not find him.

His family had given up hope. Dawa’s teenage daughter, Mendo Lhamu Sherpa, said they were on the second day of a funeral ritual, which lasts for several days.

“When we first heard about it (the rescue), we could not be sure if that person was indeed our father,” Mendo Lhamu said. “So to be certain we asked for photos to be sent and then only we were sure and very happy.”

Dawa’s wife told AFP that she had begun to offer last rite prayers for her husband’s soul before learning of his survival. She said he was conscious at the hospital and recovering from “some frostbite.”

The team that spotted him was part of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, which lays the ladders and ropes on the route at the start of each climbing season and then removes the equipment and cleans up the site after climbers have left.

Dawa was last seen at spot called Yellow Band above the Camp 3, which is located at 23,622 feet. The base camp is at 17,388 feet.

Dawa works for a small Kathmandu-based company called Himalayan Traverse, and he was guiding a Polish climber. He comes from the town of Okhaldhunga, south of Everest.

Members of the Sherpa community were mostly yak herders and traders living deep within the Himalayas until Nepal opened its borders in the 1950s. Their stamina and familiarity with the mountains quickly made them sought-after guides and porters, eventually allowing them to dominate the Himalyan climbing business.

More than 1,000 climbers and their guides scaled Everest this May, which was the busiest climbing season ever on the world’s highest mountain. It began late because of a massive ice block on the route just above the base camp that took about two weeks to clear.

Climbers set a record on May 21, when 274 of them successfully ascended Nepal’s side of the mountain in a single day, officials said. Experts have warned of the potential dangers of overcrowding, especially after two climbers died around the time of that record-setting day.

Increasing popularity not only increases congestion on the mountain, but also means less experienced climbers are more likely to be among the groups attempting the trek, one sherpa told AFP.

“There is a need for authorities to control this number,” Kami Rita Sherpa said. “They should let in only climbers of quality — there should be a limit.”

Everest’s 29,032-foot high peak was first climbed on May 29, 1953, by New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay.

    • Summary
    • Trump expected to make formal nomination of Blanche as chief U.S. law enforcement officer
    • Blanche, Trump’s former personal lawyer, has moved against Trump adversaries
    • Blanche has faced backlash over scuttled plan for ‘weaponization’ fund

WASHINGTON, June 4 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said he would move to nominate acting U.S. ‌Attorney General Todd Blanche on Thursday to permanently lead the Justice Department, which would make his former personal lawyer the nation’s top law enforcement officer.

“He’s acting attorney general. Tomorrow. I’m instructing Dan (Scavino) and everybody else that’s involved in that very complicated process – which is going to go, I think, very quickly – that we are going to make him permanent attorney general,” Trump said at a White House event, according to a video posted on X late on Wednesday by his aide Scavino.

Blanche, 51, took over leadership of the Justice Department after Trump fired Pam Bondi in April amid tension over the agency’s release of files related to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and frustration that the department was not moving forcefully enough against the White House’s supposed political enemies.

Blanche has faced backlash from Republican senators, and even some White House aides, over the Justice Department’s now-scuttled plan to create a $1.8 billion fund for victims of alleged government “weaponization.” To be confirmed, Blanche would need near-unanimous Republican support in the Senate, which Republicans control by a narrow 53-47 margin.

He said on Tuesday that the DOJ would not be moving forward with the plan, which sparked fierce ‌bipartisan opposition and threatened to derail a $72 billion funding package for Trump’s immigration crackdown.

But Trump on Wednesday would not say whether the fund had been terminated or was on hold, saying, “I’d have to ask the lawyers. I don’t know.”

“I love it. I think it’s so important,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “The weaponization fund, as far as I’m concerned, was a beautiful thing.”

Some lawmakers have called for a ban on the fund to be documented in writing or codified into law. Blanche told members of Congress this week that he would not commit to putting anything into writing.

Trump said in an interview broadcast on Wednesday that he was likely to nominate Blanche to the permanent position.

Blanche has moved quickly as acting attorney general to ingratiate himself to Trump and his political movement. In addition to the fund, the DOJ under Blanche has removed press releases detailing cases arising from the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, released a report condemning past prosecutions of anti-abortion activists and secured criminal charges against the Southern Poverty Law Center civil rights group and former FBI Director James Comey, a longtime Trump foe.

South Texas congressional candidate Eric Flores says Democrats have “missed the cue” when it comes to Hispanic voters.

EXCLUSIVE: Republican candidate Eric Flores believes that, despite national headwinds, Democrats are heading for a major defeat in a critical South Texas swing district after he said the party has “missed the cue” with a key demographic: Hispanic voters.

Democratic leaders have been projecting confidence that they will retake the House of Representatives this midterm election. However, Texas Congressional District 34, which is primarily made up of Hispanic voters, is one race that could complicate those plans.

Currently held by Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, District 34 has been trending hard toward Republicans in the last several elections. And with Republicans’ razor-thin House majority at stake, Flores’ race is considered a top pick-up opportunity for the GOP.

Flores, a 34-year-old veteran and former U.S. attorney, spoke with Fox News Digital after a meeting with shrimping business leaders at the Port of Brownsville. He asserted that South Texas Hispanic voters “can see through the smoke and mirrors.” With Democrats like Senate candidate James Talarico at the top of the ticket in Texas, Flores believes voters are seeing the distinction between the two parties even more clearly.

“Here in South Texas, we’re conservative. We go to church … we want to keep the family unit whole, whereas James Talarico is talking about six genders, right? He’s talking about the first thing that he loves outside of his family and friends are transgender children. That’s not what we’re about here in South Texas,” said Flores.

“We’re about taking care of our family values of keeping Christ first. They’ve absolutely missed that.”

Further, Flores said that South Texans are not connecting with Democrats’ messaging in opposition to President Donald Trump and the administration’s immigration policy.

“The issues that I’m hearing right now from the South Texas constituent is not the mainstream media point or the invisible villain that folks like Vicente Gonzalez, AOC and James Talarico are casting right now,” he said. “I’ll tell you what the constituent and what the voter is focusing on right now. They’re focusing on the cost of living. They’re focusing on affordability.”

“We’re talking about the one big, beautiful bill, the working family tax cut. That is what they’re talking about. They want the prices to continue to go down, and they want the future generation to be able to afford a house,” he added.

Meanwhile, he accused Gonzalez of not having passed “a single substantive piece of legislation for South Texas” during his nearly 10 years in Congress.

“I don’t know any job that you can have for 10 years and not be able to point to one substantive thing that you’ve done other than, well, I got this earmarked money, or I got these boys and girls grant. We appreciate that, but South Texas is deserving of much more than just that,” said Flores.

“He is using excuses that President Trump is wanting to deport brown people, and that’s not the truth,” he went on.

In response, Gonzalez called it “beyond hypocritical for Eric Flores and Republicans in Washington to feign concern for the economy when they openly celebrate stripping affordable health care and food assistance away from millions of families through their One Big, Ugly Bill.”

Gonzalez told Fox News Digital that “when Democrats retake the majority in November, I will focus on ending these ‘America Last’ policies that cater to the wealthiest few at the expense of hardworking South Texas families.”

“While Eric panders to the Administration like a lapdog, I’ve delivered more than $8 billion in federal funding to support law enforcement, improve infrastructure, assist veterans, and strengthen public education in my district,” he continued, adding, “South Texans deserve a fighter who puts our community first, not someone like Eric, who served as the lead defense counsel for a child predator and will only work for party bosses.”

Additionally, JT Ennis, a spokesperson for Talarico, commented to Fox News Digital that “there is a growing backlash in South Texas to the corruption we’re seeing from politicians like [GOP Senate candidate] Ken Paxton.”

“They promised to make everything less expensive and put working families first, but now everything is more expensive and working families are further behind – all because they’d rather cut taxes for billionaire mega-donors than help working Texans,” said Ennis. “While Ken Paxton hurls cheap insults to distract from his career of corruption, James will continue bringing working people together to fix this broken political system and lower costs for families.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Paxton, who currently serves as Texas attorney general, for comment.

Meanwhile, in a statement to Fox News Digital, Zach Kraft, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, criticized Gonzalez and Talarico for having “fought as transgender warriors for a decade, trying to convince Texans there are six genders and men can become women using your tax dollars for sex change surgeries.”

Fox News Digital reached out to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for comment.

Though South Texas has been dominated by Democrats for roughly a century, Flores concluded that “folks down here feel absolutely abandoned by the Democrat[s].”

“We can say 50 to 100 years, people are tired of not having results. They’re tired of the Democrats coming down here and saying that they’re the representative party for this area. And it’s just false,” he said.

“This is the number one targeted seat in the entire nation. And why is that? Because we continue to see the Hispanic voter moving closer and closer to the Republican Party. What drives that? A lot of people don’t understand this. Here in South Texas, we’re really about three things: It’s faith, family, and hard work.”

Fox News Digital also reached out to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., for comment.
