Maine sex scandal, Trump’s sway: What to watch in Tuesday’s US primaries

    2026-06-09T10:06:57.523Z / Reuters

    Summary

    • Maine Democrat Graham Platner faces sexting scandal, risking his party’s Senate hopes
    • Trump’s latest target is Representative Nancy Mace in South Carolina
    • Nevada’s 3rd District key for Democrats’ House control

WASHINGTON, June 9 (Reuters) – An oyster farmer and political newcomer besieged by questions about his sexting practices. A Republican congresswoman who was years ago branded “disloyal” and “nasty” by President Donald Trump.

These are two of the story lines we are watching on Tuesday as primary voters go to the polls in Maine, South Carolina, Nevada and North Dakota.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

Graham Platner will likely be the winner of Maine’s U.S. Senate Democratic primary, even though his own party has the jitters over a New York Times report quoting former girlfriends saying he at times behaved in ways they described as unsettling.

Meanwhile, in the South Carolina primary for governor, Representative Nancy Mace could be the latest casualty of Trump’s efforts to topple fellow Republican officeholders after she demanded the release of the government’s Jeffrey Epstein files.

    THE MAINE EVENT

Democrats had high hopes of capturing a U.S. Senate seat from Republicans in Maine, where five-term Senator Susan Collins is running for reelection at a time when voters are soured by high consumer prices and the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.

Platner, a former combat Marine, built momentum on a pitch as a man of the people that resonated with moderates and progressives, drew substantial campaign funding and led Democratic Governor Janet Mills to suspend her primary bid.

Now, the married Platner is fighting off reports he sent sexually explicit texts to multiple women last year. Platner, 41, has apologized for the behavior and said he struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression following combat duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The big question: Does any of this matter, considering that Trump himself has thrived politically despite successive controversies over his alleged extramarital activities including a videotape in which he is heard boasting of grabbing women’s genitals. The answer could determine whether Democrats can capture majority control of the Senate.

If Platner cannot put the controversy to rest, he could be facing intra-party pressure to drop out of the race by July 13, the deadline for putting a replacement on the November ballot.

    GOLDEN MOMENT FOR REPUBLICANS?

Representative Jared Golden, one of the most moderate Democrats in the U.S. Congress, is retiring and Republicans can taste ‌victory in the race for his replacement.

Former Republican Governor Paul LePage is running for the seat in a district that Trump won in 2024 and he has Trump’s “complete and total endorsement” as the president likes to say.

Three Democrats appeared to be locked in a tight race for their party’s nomination. This race could help define whether Republicans hold onto their narrow U.S. House majority.

    ANOTHER TRUMP PRIMARY TARGET

Already in this year’s primary elections Trump-backed candidates have defeated Republican Senators Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, John Cornyn of Texas and Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky.

Will Representative Nancy Mace lose out too as she seeks the Republican nomination for governor? That is looking more and more likely following Trump’s late May endorsement of South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, who is running on an “America First” platform.

A crowded field could result in a June 23 runoff between the top two contenders. The Cook Political Report has raised the prospect of Mace failing to make the cut.

The Republican primary winner is expected to also win the November general election as it has been nearly three decades since a Democrat has been elected governor in this Republican-leaning state.

    DEMOCRATS’ NEVADA GAMBLE

If Democrats are to win control of the House of Representatives in November they need to hang on to Nevada’s 3rd congressional district, a Las Vegas-area seat now held by Democrat Susie Lee.

Trump narrowly won the district in 2024, but Lee also won her race by nearly 7 percentage points and the seat is one of 13 that Trump won that are currently held by Democrats.

Lee is seeking renomination against cardiologist James Lally, a self-funded Republican-turned-Democrat who has infused his campaign with $1 million.

Republicans have a four-way primary, led by three largely self-funded candidates: Trump-endorsed video game composer Marty O’Donnell, neurosurgeon Aury Nagy and former U.S. Ambassador to Iceland Jeff Gunter. The fourth candidate is businesswoman Tera Anderson.

Graham Platner seeks Democratic Senate nomination in Maine, and more primary races to watch today

    2026-06-09T06:00:00-0400 / CBS News

Maine is one of four states with primary voters going to the polls on Tuesday, and it has one of the most closely watched races in the country, as Democrat Graham Platner seeks to lock up the nomination to take on incumbent GOP Sen. Susan Collins despite his recent string of scandals.

There are also primaries in South Carolina, Nevada and North Dakota. Here are the major races to watch:

    Maine Senate race

The Senate race in Maine has been a priority for Democrats seeking to topple Collins in their quest to win back the upper chamber.

Platner, a 41-year-old military veteran and oyster farmer, has seen surging support among Democrats in Maine, billing himself as a working class, anti-establishment candidate with a focus on opposing the “billionaire class.”

But new allegations against Platner emerged in the week before the primary, and it’s not yet clear how or whether they will affect the race.

Just over a week ago, the Wall Street Journal reported that Platner’s wife told his campaign that he had sent sexually explicit text messages to other women soon after the couple got married in 2023. And last week, the New York Times reported on alleged “unsettling” behavior by Platner toward some women he dated, including one who described him as “toxic” and “abusive,” particularly when he had been drinking. Platner has denied physical abuse and suggested the allegations are politically motivated. He has acknowledged struggling with PTSD and alcohol during what he called a “very dark period of my life.”

The developments followed other personal controversies, including problematic internet comments he made years ago, along with a tattoo he got during his time in the Marines that is widely recognized as a Nazi symbol. Platner has since apologized for the posts and covered up the tattoo.

The Times’ report came after Platner had all but secured the nomination, since Maine Gov. Janet Mills, 78, dropped out of the race in April. Although national Democrats recruited and initially backed Mills, the only Democrat to win statewide in Maine in two decades, Platner’s groundswell of support eclipsed her efforts. Mills’ name will still appear on the ballot Tuesday, along with another candidate, David Costello.

Platner expressed confidence heading into Tuesday’s primary. His allies in Congress have largely defended him, while acknowledging the controversies. Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California Sunday said on “Face the Nation that if there were evidence of violence or sexual assault, he would not support Platner.

“We should focus on acknowledging it was misogynistic, acknowledging it was wrong, moving on with redemption, and then focusing on his issues, which are stopping the war, taking on the billionaire class,” Khanna said.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, an independent who caucuses with Democrats and is among the party’s most influential progressives, has also stood by Platner. He told CBS News chief Washington analyst Robert Costa on Monday he will “do everything I can” to help Platner win.

“I think when you look at politics in general, there are no saints in the United States Senate,” Sanders told Costa during an interview at the National Press Club. “People can argue about this aspect of Graham or another, but to my mind right now, we need allies in the United States Senate who have the guts to take on the big money that is dominating this country.”

Meanwhile, the former political director of Platner’s campaign — Genevieve McDonald — excoriated the candidate in a Washington Post op-ed on the eve of the election, saying he “is not someone who would be good for Maine or for the country.”

McDonald left the campaign last fall, around when Platner’s online posts and tattoo came to light. She accused Platner and his campaign of downplaying those issues, and wrote that he “exhibits a pattern of dishonest behavior that is impossible to ignore.”

Collins, who’s running unopposed in the GOP primary on Tuesday, is the only Republican seeking reelection in the Senate in a state that Vice President Kamala Harris won in 2024. But Collins, who’s been in the upper chamber since 1997 and exercises significant power as chair of the Appropriations Committee, has fended off a number of challenges from Democrats in previous cycles, including in 2020 when Joe Biden won the state.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the race a toss-up.

    Maine 2nd Congressional District

Democrats are hoping to hang on to Rep. Jared Golden’s seat in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. Golden, a moderate Democrat who declined to endorse Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and has at times voted with Republicans, is retiring after four terms in Congress, giving Republicans a stronger opportunity to flip the seat.

The Cook Political Report rates the race as likely Republican. President Trump won the district in the last three presidential elections.

Four Democrats are vying to face Republican Paul LePage in the general election. LePage is a former two-term governor who is running unopposed in the GOP primary.

Joe Baldacci, a state senator, is seen as the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination and has the backing of House Democrats’ campaign arm, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He is running against state auditor Matt Dunlap, social worker Paige Loud and former congressional staffer Jordan Wood.

    Maine governor’s race

Mills, the highest-ranking Democrat elected statewide, is term-limited, leaving the field wide open. There are seven Republicans who are actively campaigning and five Democrats on the ballot for their parties’ nominations.

Maine has ranked-choice voting, and voters can rank up to five candidates on their ballot.

Pingree and fellow Democrats former state Senate President Troy Jackson and state Attorney General Shenna Bellows have formed an alliance, asking supporters to rank all three to shut out Nirav Shah and Angus King III, the son of Sen. Angus King.

State Sen. Richard Bennett has submitted enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot as an independent, which means there will be a three-way ballot on Election Day with the winners of Tuesday’s contests.

The Cook Political Report ranks the race as Likely Democrat.

    South Carolina governor’s race

The Republican candidates vying to replace term-limited Republican Gov. Henry McMaster are Pamela Evette, South Carolina’s lieutenant governor who enjoys Mr. Trump’s backing; Rep. Nancy Mace; Rep. Ralph Norman; Josh Kimbrell, a South Carolina state senator; Alan Wilson, South Carolina’s longtime attorney general; and Rom Reddy, a former business executive.

In the GOP primary for governor, if none of the candidates attract majority support, the two top candidates would head to a runoff race later this month.

Mr. Trump passed over Mace and Norman to endorse McMaster-backed Evette. The president called Evette a “good friend, fighter, and WINNER.”

Mr. Trump and Mace have had their tense moments, including when she condemned Mr. Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, and he endorsed a primary challenger in her House reelection race in 2022. Although she and Mr. Trump had warmer interactions afterward, Mace was instrumental in the House push to release the Epstein files.

Norman also had little chance of winning Mr. Trump’s support, since he backed former U.N. Ambassador and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley over Trump in the 2024 GOP presidential primary.

On the Democratic side, South Carolina State Rep. Jermaine Johnson, attorney Mullins McLeod and businessman Billy Webster are vying to be on the ticket for governor in November.

The chair of South Carolina’s Democratic Party urged McLeod to drop his campaign and focus on his mental and emotional well being after The Post and Courier unearthed police dashcam video of him shouting incoherently in the back of a police cruiser.

No Democrat has won statewide office in South Carolina since 2000 and Mr. Trump won the state with 58% of the vote, so the primaries are typically more competitive than the general election.

    South Carolina Senate primary

Sen. Lindsey Graham also has some opponents in his Senate GOP primary as he seeks his fifth term, but none are expected to oust him from the seat he’s held since 2003. Mr. Trump on Monday repeated his endorsement of Graham, and is holding a tele-rally Monday night for him.

The Democrats looking to unseat Graham, a tall order given Republican dominance in South Carolina and Graham’s longtime influence in the state, are pediatrician Annie Andrews, former Biden adviser and funeral home owner Brandon Brown and logistics professional Kyle Freeman.

Graham beat Democrat Jaime Harrison by 10 points in 2020, although Harrison raised a record $130 million, according to his campaign. Harrison went on to become the chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

    Nevada governor’s race

Nevada’s Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo tops Democrats’ target list this year to flip, and two Democrats are vying for the chance to take him on in November. Lombardo has several primary opponents on the ballot, but none are viewed as serious threats, says University of Nevada-Las Vegas political science professor Rebecca Gill.

But Lombardo has an “uphill battle” ahead of him after the primaries, Gill said. Aaron Ford and Alexis Hill are competing in the Democratic primary to take on Lombardo in November.

Ford has locked up much of the establishment wing of the Democratic party, while Hill is running as a progressive challenger.

Nevada had consistently voted for Democrats in the presidential election since 2008 and the state has two Democratic senators. But the state’s economy is heavily dependent on tourism, which was decimated by the COVID pandemic and its lockdowns, leading Nevadans to vote Lombardo into office as governor in 2022. Two years later, Mr. Trump won the state by three points.

    North Dakota

North Dakota’s two senators, governor and lieutenant governor are not facing reelection until at least 2028. But the state’s sole House member, Republican Rep. Julie Fedorchak, is seeking her second term and faces a primary challenger. Democrat Trygve Hammer, who took on Fedorchak in 2024 and lost by 39 points, is running unopposed on Tuesday.

Platner’s past under scrutiny as he faces voters in crucial Maine Senate primary

    2026-06-09T10:02:34.11Z / Reuters

    Summary

    • Platner faces scrutiny over past behavior, Nazi-linked tattoo and explicit text allegations
    • Maine race is a Senate battleground, with Republican Susan Collins seen as vulnerable
    • Democrats could replace Platner if he withdraws before July 13, state law allows

June 9 (Reuters) – Maine oyster farmer Graham Platner faces Democratic voters on Tuesday under scrutiny over online posts, a Nazi-linked tattoo and allegations he sent explicit texts in a Senate race that could determine whether his party wins control of the U.S. Senate in ‌November.

Platner, a Marine veteran who has campaigned as a populist outsider, is seen as the likely winner of Tuesday’s primary. A newcomer to politics, he faces persistent questions about his past behavior that will loom large if he wins the nomination to take on incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, 73, a moderate who has won comfortable election victories since 1996 despite the state trending Democratic.

Get weekly news and analysis on U.S. politics and how it matters to the world with the Reuters Politics U.S. newsletter. Sign up here.

He faces allegations that he sent sexually explicit texts to multiple women last year, while former girlfriends told the New York Times he at times behaved in ways they described as unsettling.

Platner, 41, has apologized for the behavior and said he struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression following combat duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said he did not know the tattoo resembled a Nazi insignia and had it covered up last year.

The Maine Senate race is seen by analysts as one of the most competitive in the November midterm elections, when control of the Senate and the House of Representatives is at stake. Democrats need to pick up four seats from Republicans to win a majority in the 100-seat Senate.

    DEMOCRATIC LEADERS STICK WITH PLATNER

While some Democrats have called the revelations about Platner’s past disturbing, progressive backers like Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont have stuck with him and no prominent figures in the party have called for him to drop out. Platner did not mention the controversies — nor was he asked about them — at an hour-long town hall in Portland, Maine, on Sunday.

Platner’s background may not be disqualifying for Democratic voters, but it may be a more significant factor in the matchup against Collins.

“She doesn’t always vote the way I like, but I call her the lesser of two evils. I hate to say it, but the other side is… there’s a lot of ‌negative things coming out that I wouldn’t want in a dog catcher in my town,” Barbara Fenlason, 76, a piano teacher from Verona Island, Maine, told Reuters last week.

Democrats aren’t without options if more controversies emerge. The party can replace him if he wins the primary but drops out before July 13, according to state law. Platner’s top rival, Governor Janet Mills, suspended her campaign in April but said last week that she remains on the ballot.

Maine Democrats also will pick a candidate to help them retain control of a Republican-leaning House seat that covers the state’s forested interior.

With centrist Democrat Jared Golden retiring, Democrats will choose between state Senator Joe Baldacci, who is seen as the most moderate candidate, and a trio of progressives: Matt Dunlap, the state auditor, former congressional aide Jordan Wood, and social worker Paige Loud. Paul LePage, the combative former governor, is expected to win the Republican nomination.

The winner of these contests might not be known for days, as the state uses a ranked-choice voting system that can take time to tabulate.

SOUTH CAROLINA, NEVADA CONTESTS AS WELL

Voters in Nevada, North Dakota and South Carolina also cast ballots on Tuesday. In South Carolina, the crowded Republican gubernatorial primary includes Representative Nancy Mace, who has occasionally tangled with other members of her party, and Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, who has been endorsed by her fellow Republican, President Donald Trump.

In Nevada, video game composer Marty O’Donnell has won Trump’s endorsement and is seen as the leading candidate to win the Republican primary to take on incumbent Democratic Representative Susie Lee in a Republican-leaning Las Vegas district. Other Republican candidates include Jeff Gunter, a former ambassador to Iceland, and neurosurgeon Aury Nagy.

Lee also faces a primary challenger in cardiologist James Lally, who has criticized her support for Israel.

In Trump’s second term, fewer seats for women at the table

    2026-06-09T09:00:00.000Z / The Washington Post

Nearly 10 years after their first bilateral meeting inside Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping again gathered last month for discussions about U.S.-China relations.

Much had changed over the preceding decade. Wars had broken out in Europe and the Middle East, shifting global alliances; the coronavirus pandemic had killed millions around the world and transformed the global economy; and at the table in Beijing, the makeup of aides and advisers sitting alongside each leader for the high-level talks was visibly different.

Images from Trump’s meeting with Xi in 2017 show Trump sitting alongside a large group of senior U.S. officials, including three women. Xi’s staff at the table also included a woman.

During their most recent meeting inside the same room in May, every U.S. and Chinese official at the table was a man.

The all-male delegation exemplifies a broader trend within the Trump administration’s hiring practices for senior executive branch roles that require Senate approval. Data reviewed by The Washington Post shows that Trump has selected fewer women to serve in these senior roles than during the same period of his first term. There also has been a historic amount of turnover among women in Trump’s Cabinet.

The Trump White House has expressed pride in the fact that some key senior staff have been the first women to hold certain titles, including Susie Wiles as chief of staff, and defended the president’s hiring choices in a statement to The Post.

“President Trump has assembled the greatest Administration in history, selecting each member of his incredible team based on one criterion: their ability to deliver for the American people,” Taylor Rogers, a White House spokeswoman, said in a statement. “Unlike the identity-politics-obsessed Democrats, the President judges individuals on merit and qualifications, not immutable characteristics.”

Lower rate of female political appointees

According to the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit that says it aims to build a better government and a stronger democracy, Trump’s Senate-confirmed appointees are made up of the smallest percentage of women of any administration since George W. Bush.

A PPS political appointee tracker, launched with The Post in 2016, monitors appointments to roughly 800 executive branch positions, a portion of more than 1,300 positions that require Senate confirmation. It includes all full-time, civilian positions in the executive branch that require Senate confirmation except for judges, marshals and U.S. attorneys. (Military appointments and part-time positions requiring Senate confirmation are not included.)

When excluding ambassadors and holdovers from previous administrations, PPS data show that so far in this administration, about a year and four months in, 14.53 percent of all nominees or Senate-confirmed political appointees — 51 out of 351 total roles — are women.

At this point in President Joe Biden’s term, women had been nominated for 199 out of 379 roles, comprising 52.5 percent of appointees. And at this point in Trump’s first term, women had been nominated or announced for 41 of 173 of those roles, comprising 23.7 percent of appointees.

Heather Higgins, CEO of the conservative nonprofit Independent Women’s Voice, told The Post that “the confirmation gantlet falls hardest on conservative women who can expect their families, faith, and reputations to be put through the wood chipper.”

“Plenty of enormously talented women make the entirely rational choice to serve the country some other way,” she added. “That’s not a deficit of ambition but a market signal that women don’t necessarily see politics as the only or best lane for influence. And looking at the life of those in those roles, which is no picnic, I’d say that that’s a testament to the groundedness and judgment of women on the right.”

But Max Stier, the president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, expressed concerns about the trend.

“The evidence is clear that drawing on people with different backgrounds creates a higher-performing organization,” Stier said in a statement. “At the end of the day, our government needs leadership that reflects the diversity of the American people in order to understand and best serve them.”

    Turnover in Trump’s Cabinet

The first female Cabinet member was Frances Perkins, who served as secretary of labor from 1933 through 1945. But it wasn’t until the 1970s under President Jimmy Carter that more than one woman was part of the president’s Cabinet at the same time.

Trump selected nine women to serve in his Cabinet or in Cabinet-level positions at the start of his second term. One of those Cabinet-rank members, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, does not require Senate confirmation. Another pick, Elise Stefanik, withdrew her nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Among Trump’s presidential predecessors, only Biden successfully nominated more women to serve in his Cabinet toward the start of his presidency.

But nearly a year and a half into Trump’s second term, every departure from his Cabinet has been a woman. And more female Cabinet and Cabinet-level officials have left their positions during this term than at this point in any previous presidential administration, according to an internal count by The Post based on a list of female Cabinet members through U.S. history collected by the Rutgers University Center for American Women and Politics.

Most recently, Tulsi Gabbard announced last month that she would step down as the Director of National Intelligence effective June 30. Along with Gabbard, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem all have left the Cabinet. A man was chosen to replace each of them.

Fewer Republican women running for federal office

The start of Trump’s second presidency also marked the first Congress since 2011 in which the number of women serving the House and Senate declined, due to a decline in Republican women. While Democrats set a record by sending 110 female lawmakers to the House and Senate at the start of 2025, Republicans elected 40, according to data from CAWP. The number of Republican women in the House and Senate hit record or near-record levels after the 2022 midterm elections.

There’s also been a decline in Republican women running for federal office, according to data from the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers. Republican women as a percentage of Senate and House candidates reached their peak in 2022.

A record-setting 38 women filed as Republican Senate candidates in 2022. The number of candidates dropped to 21 in 2024 and has risen slightly to 27 candidates filing to run in 2026.

Similarly, the number of Republican women registering to run for House seats hit a peak in 2022 with 261. That number dropped to 166 in 2024. So far in 2026, the number of female Republican candidates filing to run for House seats has declined further to 155 candidates.

“Republican women are underrepresented across the board, across states, even when we look at them as a percentage of their own caucus in highly Republican states,” said Kelly Dittmar, Director of Research and CAWP Scholar at Rutgers. “This change in a Republican administration is consistent with what we have seen before: When Republicans are in office, when they hold a state legislature, the majority party — we know that almost always there are going to be fewer women.”

Public polling suggests that waning female representation in Washington may not be seen as much of a problem for many Republicans.

A 2023 Pew Research study found that 5 percent of Republicans and Republican leaners say it is extremely or very important to them that the U.S. elects a woman as president in their lifetime. Among Democrats, 31 percent said it was extremely or very important. Republican women were also about twice as likely as Republican men to say there are too few women in high political offices in the country.

“It’s odd to assume that women are succeeding only if they’re found in government rosters. That’s a surprisingly narrow definition of success,” Higgins said. “One of the lessons of the last several decades is that women don’t all want the same things, don’t make the same choices, and shouldn’t be expected to. Equality means respecting those choices, not treating every statistical difference as evidence that something has gone wrong.”
