Harris becomes accidental SAVE Act ‘saleswoman’ as Trump attack spectacularly backfires

    August 10, 2026 12:30pm EDT / Fox News

Harris warned the bill would require proof of identity to register to vote, calling it an obstacle for Americans

By Ashley J. DiMella, Fox News

Rep. Sheri Biggs, R.S.C., criticizes the Senate’s delay in passing the Save America Act. Biggs emphasizes the House has passed the bill multiple times. They highlight the legislation’s popularity, with over 70% public support for common-sense ideas like voter ID and proof of citizenship.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

Conservatives piled on former Vice President Kamala Harris after she warned Americans would have to “prove who you are” under the SAVE America Act, arguing her criticism inadvertently turned into a sales pitch for the Republican-backed bill.

“Incredible SAVE America Act saleswoman,” wrote conservative commentator Eric Daughetry on X.

Harris posted a video on her X account Friday discussing midterm elections while highlighting the SAVE Act, including lamenting to voters that “you’re going to have to have proof of who you are.”

She added the bill will require “a passport, which a lot of Americans don’t have, or a birth certificate. Same point, obstacles to make it difficult for you to register to vote.”

Trump has made passage of the SAVE Act a top priority for his administration, pushing the stalled election legislation through a series of pressure tactics, including tying it to defense spending and threatening housing legislation.

The clip went viral among conservatives, with Trump even pinning the video to the top of his profile on Truth Social.

“The Jim Crow comparisons are tired. The poll tax is gone. Jim Crow is gone. Proving you’re an American citizen before voting in an American election is not oppression. It’s common sense,” said Texas Rep. Wesley Hunt in response.

“This is CRAZY- imagine a world where you have to prove who you are,” said former White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

“She needs to hang it up,” wrote Oversight Project vice president of litigation Jeff Clark.

“Kamala Harris complains that if the SAVE America Act passes, people will have to prove who they are in order to register to vote,” wrote conservative commentator Benny Johnson.

“Wonder why Kamala Harris thinks this is a bad thing,” posted Elon Musk’s political action committee America.

“Kamala Harris on the SAVE Act: it would require Americans to ‘prove who you are’ to vote. Trump reposted her clip himself,” said Fox News anchor Sean Hannity.

Trump has warned about the need for voter ID laws for years, including from the 2016 campaign trail.

With Congress out of session and the midterms approaching, Trump is continuing to push lawmakers to prioritize passage of the SAVE Act, keeping pressure on Republicans to act when they return to Washington.

Democratic lawmakers have argued the SAVE Act would create unnecessary barriers for eligible voters, most notably potentially disenfranchising them.

https://x.com/reportrai3/status/1978965437837697046

Italy police say businessman with ties to Berlusconi is mastermind behind journalist bomb attack

    August 10, 2026 1:24 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

A businessman who had ties to former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi is the alleged mastermind behind an October bomb attack against one of the country’s leading investigative journalists, police said on Monday.

Rome’s Carabinieri police said they arrested Valter Lavitola for allegedly ordering the attack outside journalist Sigfrido Ranucci’s house last year. The two men are said to be friends.

The blast in a residential neighborhood of Pomezia, about 12 miles south of Rome, destroyed two cars belonging to Ranucci, known for investigations into corruption and the mafia. Ranucci had just returned home at the time, and his daughter had walked by a half-hour before, his employer said at the time.

Video shot by Ranucci, who has been under police protection since 2021 because of his hard-hitting investigations, showed the mangled remains of the cars and the gate. https://x.com/reportrai3/status/1978965437837697046

Lavitola is accused of instructing a second man, Tavares Gomes Clesio, to recruit four men to place the bomb in front of Ranucci’s home, police said. The four men were arrested near Naples in June for carrying out the attack.

Police are still looking for Gomes.

According to police, Lavitola and Gomes took part in an “initial exploratory inspection” outside of Ranucci’s home in September.

Lavitola thought the bombing would raise Ranucci’s profile ahead of a possible career in politics, authorities wrote in the arrest warrant, according to local media.

Ranucci, the popular star of the weekly investigative show “Report” on state broadcaster Rai, is not accused of any wrongdoing and detectives believe he was unaware of Lavitola’s plans.

Ranucci has taken on sensitive topics such as Italy’s mafia and political corruption in past investigations, and has lived under police protection for years. He told the ANSA news agency the day after the attack that he had received “an endless list of threats.”

The journalist, who once described Lavitola as a “true friend,” was not injured in the attack.

Lavitola, a former journalist and import-export businessman who owns a restaurant in Rome, is well known in Italy, having been close to Berlusconi, who died in 2023.

In 2015, a lower court convicted the former prime minister of having bribed a senator, handing him a three-year sentence. The same sentence was given to Lavitola, whom prosecutors accused of having handed the cash to the lawmaker.

The explosion targeting Ranucci occurred on the eighth anniversary of the car bomb slaying of Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who wrote extensively about suspected corruption in political and business circles.

    2026-08-10T17:24:43.491Z / https://www.cnn.com/2016/08/10/politics/aoc-woke-democrats

Democrats like AOC are trying to shrug off their ‘woke’ era. That’s bad for our politics

    2026-08-10T17:24:43.491Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/10/politics/aoc-woke-democrats

Democrats would very much like to figure out how to explain away some of the far-left things they said circa 2019 and 2020 — a period often referred to as “peak woke,” “woke 1.0” or “woke 1.”

Kamala Harris struggled with this during her 2024 presidential campaign (think: some transgender policies), and now it looms over some key 2026 races.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday offered a prescription: Laugh it off.

“I have a local city councilman that has this saying: ‘Woke 1 was crazy,’” the New York congresswoman said on ABC’s “This Week,” before laughing.

Ocasio-Cortez, who once supported defunding the police, went on to suggest Covid had expanded the range of acceptable political discourse. But she said that it’s “not rhetoric that we would use today.”

This might be a politically deft explanation for Ocasio-Cortez and her ilk. But it’s a bad one for the body politic. It continues a troubling trend of major politicians asking Americans not to take the things they say — or more specifically, that they once said — at face value.

It’s a perfect recipe for a continued decline in honesty and accountability.

Ocasio-Cortez was quoting New York City Council Member Chi Ossé. Back in May, he responded to a critic who unearthed a 2021 comment of his by saying simply, “Woke 1 was crazyyyy.”

The same week, former Biden White House aide Yemisi Egbewole credited Texas Senate candidate James Talarico for distancing himself from his past woke comments. “Peak woke got weird. It’s okay to say that!” Egbewole said.

And this weekend, perhaps the one 2026 Democratic candidate with the biggest “peak woke” problem echoed Ocasio-Cortez’s comment.

Francesca Hong is the favorite in Tuesday’s Wisconsin gubernatorial primary, but her past statements about abolishing police and canceling Thanksgiving, among others, have a lot of Democrats freaked out about her potential nomination.

“I had some hot takes, some bad takes on Twitter, but when you’re a business owner running a restaurant during Covid, trying to pay bills as a student, you’re putting feelings out there into the world,” Hong told Politico. “But I’ve evolved, I’ve learned.”

Appearing after Ocasio-Cortez on “This Week,” Republican former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took exception to her explanation.

“After listening to the congresswoman, why should anyone trust her?” Christie said. He added that Republicans would “hold people like” Ocasio-Cortez and Hong “to what they’ve said over their careers, not what they’re trying to conveniently evolve into now.”

But Christie is, to put it lightly, an imperfect messenger on this.

Not only has he repeatedly changed his stance on President Donald Trump, but he has basically acknowledged having said things about Trump for political expediency.

After running hard against Trump and then embracing him in 2016, Christie explained: “Yes, I disagreed with Donald Trump at the time. Big shock. I was running against him. … Of course I disagreed with him, because I was running against him.”

Then, after Christie broke with Trump in 2021, the New Jersey Republican tried to disown the compliments he paid to Trump by saying he reasoned Trump would be the GOP nominee, and that he wanted to make the best of the situation.

But it’s hardly just Christie. This has become an epidemic in US politics, on both sides of the aisle.

The late GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham had repeatedly suggested his pro-Trump conversion was about getting things accomplished rather than what he truly believed. “If you know anything about me, it’d be odd not to do this,” he said at one point.

Vice President JD Vance in both private messages and public comments has cited political calculations for his Trump stances. He told Time magazine when launching his Ohio Senate campaign in 2021: “If I actually care about these people and the things I say I care about, I need to just suck it up and support him.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has explained comments like calling Trump a “con man” in 2016 by saying, “I didn’t know him when I ran in 2016, didn’t know him as a person.”

And in 2020, Harris explained her personal attacks on Joe Biden’s past position on busing by saying, “It was a debate.” When asked if that meant she didn’t mean what she said, Harris repeated, “It was a debate,” and suggested that those kinds of comments are what you say in that forum.

The most prominent example of this in recent years is Trump’s years-long assault on the truth — and his supporters defense of it. When confronted with his tens of thousands of false and misleading claims, some allies have repeatedly urged people to take Trump “seriously” rather than “literally.”

Implicit in these arguments is that maybe these politicians didn’t believe what they said in real time — that they were just saying stuff. But the question then becomes: Does that also apply to what they’re saying today?

Seriously-not-literally is a great set up for Trump because he can decide retroactively which comments he meant and what he was just saying for political effect.

But that arrangement removes the onus on politicians to be studied stewards of the public interest — to do the hard work of coming to their positions through a sober review of the issues. And it makes it virtually impossible to hold them accountable.

And once that accountability is out the window and Americans no longer demand it, politicians are liable to say whatever they think is most advantageous at the time.

That’s what they do now, to some extent. But formalizing a system where comments from five days or five years ago can be explained away as unimportant ramblings from another political moment feels like a bad idea.

It would be better to reward politicians who have the foresight and wisdom to take positions that they actually believe in and can stick to — and can stand the political test of time.

Why Taylor Farms is facing scrutiny over salmonella and cyclospora outbreaks

    August 10, 2026 / 3:56 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Megan Cerullo Reporter, MoneyWatch

Taylor Farms, whose lettuce public health officials have identified as the source of this summer’s widespread cyclosporiasis outbreak, now faces another serious food safety issue.

The Salinas, California, produce supplier recently recalled several food items made with jalapeños suspected of being contaminated with salmonella.

But Jennifer McEntire, founder of food safety consulting firm Food Safety Strategy, drew an important distinction between the two recalls. Taylor Farms did not grow the jalapeños used to make a variety of pepper-based products, including pico de gallo salsa and guacamole, that it has now recalled due to salmonella risks.

By contrast, Taylor Farms’ Mexican operation is known to have produced the lettuce that has caused thousands of cases of cyclosporiasis across the U.S. since May 1.

“The issue with jalapeños is very, very different. The jalapeños came from a separate grower, handled by a different importer that sold them to a number of different entities,” McEntire told CBS News, noting that she views Taylor Farms’ involvement in the jalapeño recall as “an extremely unfortunate coincidence.”

“They happened to receive these jalapeños, so it puts them in the news once again,” she added.

Coast Citrus Distributors supplied the recalled peppers to Taylor Farms, which used them in some of its prepared foods. The peppers, which came from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, were used in products distributed to major grocers across the U.S., including Kroger, Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart and Whole Foods.

    Found in many foods

For consumers, of course, the latest food safety concerns can be alarming given that lettuce and jalapeño peppers are used in many of the roughly 1 billion meals Americans consume daily. Jalapeños can be sold whole, but are most often consumed as an ingredient in salsa, burritos, guacamole, dips, salads and other products.

Lettuce is also an integral part of Americans’ diets, with the recalled product making its way into meals served at Taco Bell restaurants, for example. Both recalls have caused alarm among consumers who fear some produce is unsafe to consume, or who no longer trust the systems designed to keep the nation’s food supply safe.

Although McEntire acknowledged the public health concerns amid the cyclosporiasis and salmonella outbreaks, she said U.S. safety monitoring systems are largely effective and more broadly described the nation’s food supply as “remarkably safe.”

At the same time, the mounting public focus on food safety could spur industry changes, she said.

“Food safety has always been the industry’s main concern because people eat produce fresh or raw,” McEntire said. “But given the issues we’ve encountered, there will absolutely be some bigger calls to action to bring the industry together, so it’s not each grower on their own. One person’s issue becomes everyone’s in the produce industry, so expect new efforts around collaboration and sharing of information.”

The entire industry, she added, “will be highly motivated to make sure there is no weak link.”

What is Taylor Farms’ history of food safety?

Taylor Farms has been connected to several previous food safety investigations and recalls.

In 2024, the company supplied sliced onions served on McDonald’s Quarter Pounders that were contaminated with E. coli, leading to one death and more than 100 illnesses, according to the FDA. The FDA found dozens of violations at a Taylor Farms facility that supplied the onions, including dirty equipment.

In 2020, Taylor Farms also recalled several onion-containing products from a third-party supplier due to concerns that they could be contaminated with Salmonella.

Trump’s former lawyers: Judge Emil Bove swears in Attorney General Todd Blanche at the White House

Todd Blanche was sworn in as attorney general on Monday in an Oval Office ceremony led by his former Donald Trump defense-team colleague, Judge Emil Bove.

The swearing-in was held without press access. Blanche’s family members, including his wife, daughter and granddaughter, attended. Blanche told CNN he was “feeling good” as he left the Justice Department Monday for the White House.

Bove’s history with Blanche — and at the Justice Department — make his role in the ceremony notable.

After he and Blanche worked together on Trump’s defense, both were appointed to senior positions within the Justice Department. Bove was acting deputy attorney general before Blanche was confirmed in 2025, then Blanche’s top deputy. He now serves as federal appeals court judge.

At the department, Bove quickly earned a reputation as Trump’s hatchet man, leading the first waves of mass ousting’s of career prosecutors and other department officials. In one notable episode, Bove axed several prosecutors in New York and Washington, DC, who refused to sign their names to court documents dropping corruption charges against former New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

President Donald Trump nominated Bove to the 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals in May 2025. His confirmation hearings were rife with allegations from Democratic lawmakers that Bove was behind the most political efforts inside the department at the time, including efforts to ignore judge’s rulings and to pressure prosectors to move forward with the president’s personal agenda.

FBI Director Kash Patel and Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff for policy, also attended the swearing in.

Blanche was confirmed as attorney general early Saturday morning in a 50–49 Senate vote. Two GOP senators, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, joined Democrats in opposing the nomination.

Blanche has played a key role in reshaping the Justice Department to align more closely with the president’s agenda. He has advanced legal arguments that expand presidential authority and strengthen protections for the presidency and overseen large-scale firings of experienced prosecutors and longtime officials, and spearheaded a legal strategy that has made judges across the nation question the department’s decisions.

DALLAS – North Texas has beaten some of the world’s biggest data center hubs to claim the No. 1 spot in a new global ranking, as Texas becomes an increasingly powerful player in the industry.

Dallas ranked No. 1 in the 2026 Global Data Center Market Comparison by Cushman & Wakefield, a global commercial real estate services firm. The Lone Star State made a strong showing across the board, with Austin-San Antonio and West Texas also ranking first in their respective categories.

The rankings underscore how quickly Texas has become a major destination for data center development as companies search for the land and electricity needed to support artificial intelligence and other computing. Cushman & Wakefield said the state is growing at a pace that could eventually match, or surpass, Virginia, the world’s largest data center market by operating capacity.

Dallas isn’t the world’s largest data center market. Despite Dallas’ No. 1 ranking, Virginia remains the world’s largest data center market based on the amount of capacity already in operation.

Cushman & Wakefield’s ranking, however, looks beyond sheer size to where the industry is positioned to grow. The commercial real estate services firm compared 107 markets on factors including access to power and land, projects under construction, existing infrastructure and the regulatory environment.

Dallas has one of the largest pipelines of planned data center development, trailing only Virginia and Atlanta, according to the report. And that development is spreading across Texas.

Cushman & Wakefield said activity has pushed outward from the long-established Dallas-Fort Worth market as companies search for vast amounts of land and electricity needed to support AI and other computing. At the current pace, the firm said Texas could eventually match or surpass Virginia in total data center capacity.

Texas has several advantages in that race, including abundant land, a business-friendly environment, an independent and deregulated power grid and incentives for development, according to the report.

The rapid growth has also drawn political attention, with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pressing data centers to provide more of their own power and cover infrastructure costs as development accelerates across the state.

TEXAS GOV. ABBOTT EFFECTIVELY PAUSES NEW DATA CENTER PROJECTS PENDING STATEWIDE GRID AUDIT

Texas leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, have sought to position the state as a destination for large-scale data center development even as officials grapple with the strain new projects could place on the electric grid.(Jay Janner/The Austin American-Statesman via Getty Images)

The scale of that growth is also putting pressure on Texas’ resources.

Water availability is becoming a concern in West Texas and the Panhandle, while the enormous amount of electricity needed for new data centers is putting greater focus on the state’s power supply. Texas has also adopted new rules requiring some large electricity users to share infrastructure costs and account for their impact on grid reliability.

Finding enough power is an industry-wide problem.

Cushman & Wakefield said electricity is now the top consideration when companies choose where to build, with utilities taking an average of 4.4 years to connect large new projects to the grid. Those waits are prompting some developers to secure or generate power themselves.

Battleground Dem called patriotism ‘sensitive and controversial’ during debate over the Pledge of Allegiance

The swing-district challenger also questioned the Pledge of Allegiance bill and drew criticism for backing the 1619 Project

    August 10, 2026 9:53am EDT / Fox News

FIRST ON FOX: An Iowa Democrat seeking to flip one of the nation’s most competitive House seats in a rematch described patriotism as “sensitive and controversial” while also questioning the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance in a recently resurfaced newsletter she published in the weeks after the January 6 Capitol riot.

Former Iowa State Rep. Christina Bohannan of Iowa City, who is running against incumbent Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, also criticized the politics around an Iowa bill she ultimately supported that mandated the Pledge of Allegiance for schoolchildren, urging Iowans to think critically about what the pledge means.

“I acknowledge that patriotism is a sensitive and controversial subject,” Bohannan wrote in a 2021 newsletter put out by her State House office, while saying she remains patriotic herself.

“Many progressives have turned away from it. And I see the point, especially when the concept of patriotism has been so co-opted and distorted by the other side,” she wrote of Republicans.

The newsletter has resurfaced as recent polling shows a partisan divide over displays of patriotism. AP polling released in June found that about six in 10 Democrats and independents said they never fly the American flag, while roughly seven in 10 Republicans said they display it at least on holidays.

Bohannan wrote that the right viewpoint is to “not cede patriotism to anyone” but instead restore its definition as a belief in “democratic ideals of America and a willingness to fight to make those ideals a reality.”

Bohannan went on to critique a February 2021 Republican-led bill, which ultimately passed, requiring the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in public and certain private schools.

Bohannan’s campaign manager, Dan Driscoll, told Fox News Digital that “Christina absolutely stands by her vote to require the Pledge of Allegiance in Iowa schools and her passionate defense of patriotism and the greatness of our country and democracy.”

“That’s why in Congress she’ll put that into action by fighting to clean up Washington, enacting term limits and getting corporate money out of our elections, so our government focuses on working for Iowans — unlike Rep. Miller-Meeks who is funded by millions in special interest contributions while voting to raise drug, healthcare and energy costs.”

The bill passed 91-3-6 with Bohannan in favor, but she wrote about her reservations in the same newsletter.

“It was clear that many of our Democratic members in swing districts would risk their seats for voting ‘no’ on this bill,” Bohannan wrote. “And even if those members voted for it, they would still be held accountable if other members of our caucus voted ‘no’. That is how deep the concept of patriotism runs.”

“But we can reframe the issue in a way that is true to our values.”

Bohannan said in floor remarks at the time that she supported the bill not because she wanted children to “mechanically” recite the oath but because she wanted to give them the opportunity to “think critically” about the words they are saying and whether the U.S. is “living up to them.”

“For example, the pledge is not just to the flag, but to the republic for which it stands. So our kids might ask whether our republic can last when our leaders fail to denounce those who subvert our democracy.”

Miller-Meeks, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and medic, told Fox News Digital that patriotism “has never been controversial to me, not in the 24 years I served this country and not now.”

“Bohannan and her DSA allies are free to call loving America ‘controversial,’ but they have no business representing Iowa,” Miller-Meeks said.

Zach Kraft, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, said Bohannan’s comments were predictable in light of prior controversial support she offered for the left-wing pro-DEI “1619 Project.”

“Leave it to the Queen of DEI to hate America,” Kraft told Fox News Digital.

“Only a true… woke warrior like Christina Bohannan could find patriotism offensive but see nothing wrong with calling Iowans backwards for believing in basic biology.”

Bohannan warned against a bill prohibiting diversity and “implicit bias” training at schools and universities statewide, calling the Hawkeye State potentially “backward” if it passed.

“I think that it is going to be very divisive if passed. I think that it’s going to send a very bad message about Iowa and that it is going to seem like are kind of this backwards state that doesn’t understand there are things like systemic racism.”

Miller-Meeks previously defeated Bohannan by about six percentage points in 2022, but the Democrat narrowly lost in 2024 in a race that triggered a recount and resulted in the Republican being re-elected by about 800 votes.

The district, which includes Davenport and Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa, is competing with Rep. Zach Nunn’s district to the west for the distinction of being the most competitive in the state.
