Trump calls for delay of spy nominee’s confirmation

    2026-06-17T10:03:39.301Z / Reuters

WASHINGTON, June 17 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday said a Senate hearing on his nominee to lead U.S. intelligence, Jay Clayton, should be postponed, throwing plans for a swift confirmation into doubt just hours before the session.

Republicans had been pushing for rapid Senate approval of Clayton, the top U.S. attorney for Manhattan, whom Trump nominated less than a week ago as director ‌of national intelligence (DNI) amid a political backlash over the loyalist he picked to fill the role temporarily.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

That close ally, Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte, has no national security experience, raising concerns even among some Republicans that he could “weaponize” intelligence against Trump’s perceived political foes.

Trump then nominated James McDonald to replace Clayton as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, one of the most powerful prosecutors in the country. McDonald needs Senate approval for that role.

Trump, in Evian, France, for a G7 summit, said in an overnight social media post that he did not want to remove Clayton from his post until McDonald was in place.

He said Pulte would remain as acting DNI in the meantime, adding that his fellow Republicans had agreed with Democrats to remove Pulte as acting spy chief in return for the approval of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

“However, the Republicans moved so fast with the hearings of the Great Jay Clayton … that Pulte would be gone before the (Democrats) would vote on FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act),” he said, claiming that Democrats now say they would vote against FISA.

“Not complicated, actually, the Republicans fell into a trap,” he wrote.

Trump also reiterated that he would not approve the renewal of FISA without passage of his Save America Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voting.

Democrats had said they would reserve judgment on Clayton until his hearing, and on Tuesday signaled they planned to question him closely.

    TIMING UNCLEAR

The hearing was still posted on the Senate Intelligence Committee’s website early on Wednesday, and representatives for the panel could not be immediately reached for comment.

Trump’s choice of Clayton to oversee the nation’s 18 intelligence agencies had been greeted with relief in Washington. While he lacks deep national security experience, he is broadly respected across party lines.

“I favor a full vetting … a thorough examination of all of the issues,” Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, a senior Democratic member of the panel, told reporters earlier.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York had said Democrats would decide how to proceed only after ‌the hearing.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota and other Republicans had said they wanted Democrats to agree to waive Senate rules to allow a vote on Clayton as soon as this week.

Thune told a news conference on Tuesday that Clayton is “eminently qualified” and that his position as U.S. attorney meant that he deals with intelligence matters.

    APPOINTMENT TIED TO SURVEILLANCE LAW

A swift confirmation could also help pave the way for the renewal of Section 702 of the FISA, which allows law enforcement to collect foreign intelligence that can include information about Americans without judicial authorization.

Democrats had said they would withhold the votes to renew Section 702 while Pulte was acting DNI.

“It needs to be fixed quickly, and I hope that the Democrats will work with us in order to make that happen,” Thune said.

Clayton’s current role in Manhattan is one of the most coveted positions for prosecutors in the Justice Department. His office is overseeing the case against former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was seized in a lightning raid on January 3.

Clayton could face questions about Maduro at the hearing, as well as comments he made on television shortly before his nomination suggesting there may have been fraud in counting votes in the Los Angeles mayoral race, a claim not supported by evidence.

Trump has recently repeated similar claims about the election and recycled unproven claims that the 2020 presidential race was stolen from him, which Democrats warn could be a sign he will seek to interfere in future elections.

It remains unclear whether Pulte, the federal housing regulator, will spend any time as interim director after Tulsi Gabbard’s last day on June 19. Gabbard, a former Democrat with limited intelligence experience, had been accused by Democrats of advancing Trump’s political agenda and promoting debunked election claims.

Clayton also is likely to be closely questioned about plans to sharply cut staffing of the DNI’s office, or even eliminate it completely. Trump had said that he wanted Pulte to make cuts during his time as interim director.

    Natixis CIB Americas

(Inflation) expectations are anchored, real wage gains are negative,” said Chris Hodge, head U.S. economist at Natixis CIB Americas, with two quarter-percentage-point rate cuts in coming months as consumer weakness and the impact of falling inflation-adjusted wages starts to be felt. “Are they going to want to hike in an environment when inflation is driven by supply considerations?”

Indeed, since the announcement of a U.S.-Iran deal reopening the Strait of Hormuz, global benchmark oil prices have plummeted to below $80 a barrel and are now barely 10% above where they were before the start of U.S.-backed bombing led Iran to shut the strategic waterway. Citi economists see even more potential for dovishness, and expect sequential rate cuts at Fed meetings in September, October and December.

At PGIM, by contrast, Chief Economist Robert Sockin sees three rate hikes coming in an economy that “continues to power along with above-trend growth, above-target inflation, and now a warming labor market” that after a slow start of the year is producing jobs at a pace more comparable to the years before the pandemic.

The gap in professional views is perhaps understandable given all that is in play right now. Here’s just some of what’s up in the air: A still-unsettled regime of ‌import taxes under court challenge even as President Donald Trump seeks new ways to impose them; oil prices that soared more than 70% during the U.S.-Iran hostilities but are now plunging; and tension between the artificial intelligence investment boom and the falling share of economic growth going to workers. Meanwhile, new Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh is still to provide his first view of the landscape.

The first meeting chaired by Warsh concludes on Wednesday. Interest rates are expected to remain on hold in the current 3.50%-to-3.75% range, but between a new set of economic projections from Fed policymakers and Warsh’s debut press conference, the hunt will be on for signs of whether the Fed sees the dawn of a new disinflationary era ahead or increased risks that high inflation will require higher borrowing costs.

The broad expectation is the new projections will show the Fed remaining on hold this year, though with a growing sense that a rate increase may be needed. Investors expect just a single quarter-point rate increase by the end of the year.

Given the divergence of views in the profession and at the central bank itself, there may be more incentive than usual to say as little about the future as possible.

“There are 19 Fed policymakers, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that they have 19 different views on the balance of risks regarding the conflict in Iran, the impact on the outlook for growth and inflation, and the appropriate policy response,” wrote Thomas Simons, chief economist with Jefferies. “On top of great uncertainty about the outlook, solid labor market fundamentals and a lack of bleed-through of high energy prices to core inflation gives the FOMC breathing room to maintain their wait-and-see approach.”

Want to start a business? AI can help, business owners say

New artificial intelligence tools are making it easier to start a business, fueling entrepreneurship and potentially job growth.

AI can write a business plan, conduct in-depth industry research, generate marketing content, design logos, prototype new products, and otherwise help launch or scale up a new enterprise, said Chris Franco, an entrepreneur who has used AI extensively in growing his New York-based marketing and customer acquisition firm, Woodridge Growth.

“You can do anything you can imagine. There’s nothing holding you back,” he told CBS News. “There’s no excuse not to start a business in this age.”

In recent years, new business formation across the U.S. has surged to its highest level ever, according to Census Bureau data. Solo founders are driving much of that growth, according to an analysis of Census data from Stripe Economics.

AI is slashing the cost of starting and running a business, said Torsten Slok, chief economist at asset management firm Apollo Global Management.

“That’s because you can more easily write a business plan with a large language model, use agents to do work, so that’s likely the reason the economy is becoming more dynamic for entrepreneurs,” he added. “It’s becoming easier for experts in their respective fields, like consulting, finance or legal services, to break out and become entrepreneurs and compete with some of the incumbents.”

    Lower cost, higher speed

One way AI is lowering the barriers to creating a new business: reducing startup costs.

“Are founders able to hire leaner teams and do more with less funding because of AI? One hundred percent,” Angela Lee, a professor of entrepreneurship at Columbia Business School and herself a serial entrepreneur, told CBS News.

For example, Lee recounted spending $20,000 for coders to build a website for one of the first businesses she launched in the 1990s.

“Today, you can use Lovable to vibe code a website in 20 minutes with a free tool,” Lee told CBS News, citing a popular AI coding app. “Everything has decreased in cost and increased in speed.”

Ernie Tedeschi, chief economist at Stripe Economics, described how entrepreneurs are leveraging AI to launch new enterprises.

“It can help you come up with a business plan, or give you advice on supply chains. It can do what you need to make your vision a reality,” he said. “It can help you identify what forms you need to fill out and help you complete them before you even get to the idea itself.”

    “It helps us understand”

Albert Feldman, owner of Boston-based candle company Sky Candle Co., started his business before the era of artificial intelligence. But he has since turned to AI to create marketing campaigns, for financial planning and to generate a range of vital analytics. That has helped Sky Candle operate efficiently and compete with much larger enterprises, he told CBS News.

“It helps us understand what products we should make more of and which we should move away from. We make the product ourselves — we hand-pour the candles — so it requires a lot of financial planning,” Feldman said. “By leveraging historical sales data, it helps us know how many wax and scent vessels we need to buy, and helps us make heads and tails of everything.”

Although the advent of AI has stoked concerns that the technology could displace millions of workers, Apollo’s Slok expects it to fuel innovation and, in time, job creation.

“If a fraction of the new ideas people have end up being successful, they’ll need employment,” he said. “It suggests the economy is becoming more dynamic, and ultimately, AI is going to create more jobs.”

Lee of Columbia Business School is less optimistic. “Founders are hiring less, and unfortunately, I think ultimately it will take away jobs.”

    image

(GOAT,Greatest Of All Time)的争论,随着他的每一场比赛都变得愈发没有争议。

Messi ties men’s World Cup goals record with first World Cup hat trick as Argentina tops Algeria

    2026-06-17T06:09:00-0400 / CBS News

    Updated on: June 17, 2026 / 6:21 AM EDT / AP

Kansas City, Mo. — Lionel Messi used the front of his white-and-blue, sweat-soaked jersey to wipe the tears from his eyes, a flood of emotions cracking his usually calm, confident demeanor after he gave Argentina an early lead in its 2026 Men’s World Cup opener against Algeria.

Then he scored again. And again.

Suddenly, any questions about Messi’s hamstring injury, or whether he could help Argentina become the third team to win consecutive World Cups – even as his 39th birthday approaches next week – had been answered. With a brilliant hat trick in a 3-0 win over Les Fennecs, Messi moved into a tie with Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the career scoring record at the Men’s World Cup.

“My tears after the first goal? I’ve had some tough days. It wasn’t related to football. And those feelings were because of that,” Messi said afterward, without elaborating. “I thank my teammates, the coaching staff and the delegation for helping me.”

Messi scored that emotional first goal in the opening minutes on a nifty feed from Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul, the second off an opportunistic rebound early in the second half, and the third on a crisp strike moments before subbing out to a standing ovation from a crowd of 69,045 tilted heavily toward the three-time World Cup champions.

“At a loss for words about Leo. What can I say?” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said. “He’s incredible.”

    Messi records abound

His incredible trio of goals came 20 years to the day that Messi made his World Cup debut in a match against Serbia and Montenegro – he scored in that one, too – and made the pride of Rosario only the second player to score in five editions of the men’s tournament.

Messi has 16 goals in his record six World Cup appearances overall, and it seems inevitable that Klose’s record will fall in the coming weeks. The hat trick was the 61st of Messi’s career, his 11th while playing in his national team colors and his first in the World Cup.

It also was the fifth straight World Cup game in which Messi has scored.

“It makes me very happy to have lived through everything that came my way. What I’m living though now is the cherry on top,” Messi said. “I’m very happy an grateful for this wonderful group. I enjoy it so much.”

Messi upstaged two of soccer’s other stars – Kylian Mbappé of France and Erling Haaland of Norway – who had big games of their own on Tuesday. Mbappé scored twice in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal to move into a tie for fourth on the men’s World Cup goals list with 14, while Haaland scored twice for Norway in its 4-1 victory over Iraq.

“Messi is a madman,” Haaland said in a post on Snapchat during Argentina’s game.

Messi had been dealing with a minor hamstring injury with Inter Miami that slowed him in the lead-up to the World Cup. But the eight-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, which honors global soccer’s best player, had no problems in a tuneup last week with Iceland, scoring on a penalty kick while playing 20 minutes in a sharp performance.

A career marked by greatness — and longevity

“This is my sixth World Cup, and I still feel like I’m in good shape,” Messi said. “Fortunately, I’m doing well, and today we managed to win a tough match. It’s important to start the tournament with a victory in the first game, as that’s never easy in a World Cup.”

Messi’s appearance against Algeria was the 200th of his international career, which began in 2005 at age of 18. The only players with more are Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who will play his 229th on Wednesday, and Bader al-Mutawa, who played in 202 for Kuwait.

Messi and Ronaldo are the only men to have scored in five World Cups.

“Class is permanent,” Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic said. “He’s fortunate to have the privilege that the entire Argentina team works for him, and supports him, and for a number of years now – decades – he’s done incredible things.”

Argentina is among four national teams making their base camps in the Kansas City metro. And much as it has the rest of the world, Messi-mania has swept through the area ever since La Albiceleste’s arrival in the Heartland about two weeks ago.

On match day, thousands of fans wearing his No. 10 jersey trekked into the home of the NFL’s Chiefs on the outskirts of Kansas City, singing odes to their hero. Meanwhile, during a watch party at the downtown Power & Light District, a goat accompanied by former NFL quarterback-turned Fox broadcaster Jameis Winston came on stage wearing an Argentina jersey.

The humorous moment seemed to have foreshadowed a big night for Messi when he scored an hour later, and the argument that he’s soccer’s GOAT – the greatest of all time – is becoming no argument at all with every match he plays.

“It’s an advantage to have Leo because of how he handles the group and pushes it forward. Because of who he is,” De Paul said. “He doesn’t care about individual records. He prioritizes the group, and for us it’s incredible.”
