Trump administration antisemitism probes into universities lacked evidence, ex-DOJ attorney says

    • Ex-DOJ attorney says probes had predetermined outcomes

WASHINGTON, Aug 18 (Reuters) – A former Department of Justice attorney has said the Trump administration’s probes of U.S. universities over accusations of antisemitism lacked evidence and had predetermined outcomes.

Investigations by a Trump administration ‌task force into alleged antisemitism were “marked by extraordinary procedural irregularities, predetermined outcomes without factual or legal support, and disregard” for specific legal requirements and free speech rights, lawyers for Haley Van Erem, a former career attorney in the DOJ’s civil rights division, said in a complaint.

    complaint, opens new tab
sent to the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee was made public on Tuesday by Democratic U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin.

The complaint said Van Erem and others suggested to also open probes into allegations of anti-Muslim bias on university campuses but those proposals “were not pursued by leadership.”

Republican President Donald Trump has targeted universities with probes and federal funding suspension threats over pro-Palestinian protests against U.S. ally Israel’s assault on Gaza. The Trump administration alleges the protesters were antisemitic and supported extremism.

Protesters, including some Jewish groups, say opposing Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories and its assault on Gaza is not antisemitic and advocacy for Palestinian rights should not be equated with supporting extremism.

“While at the DOJ, Ms. Haley Van Erem did not work on university investigations. And for all matters, the department stands behind the integrity of these investigations,” a DOJ spokesperson said.

Senior DOJ and Department of Health and Human Services officials “departed from longstanding investigative practices designed to ensure due process, accuracy and ‌legal compliance,” the complaint said.

“For at least some of the investigations, there was little to no factual predicate justifying opening them. When they (Van Erem and others) asked questions, raised legal concerns, or sought to document their objections, they were sometimes admonished and their concerns were often disregarded,” it added.

The complaint said some DOJ assignees felt the mandate to conduct interviews with some Middle East studies professors “seemed like an attempt to intimidate those professors and was rooted in Islamophobic assumptions that Middle East Studies professors would harbor antisemitic viewpoints rather than any actual evidence of complaints about antisemitism.”

The government has also targeted universities over diversity initiatives, transgender policies and climate programs. Rights advocates have raised due process, free speech and academic freedom concerns.

Columbia University agreed to pay more than $200 million to the U.S. government to resolve federal probes and restore most of its federal funding in July last year. Brown University said it would pay $50 million to support local workforce development when it reached a settlement with the government in 2025.

Both institutions, who have said they oppose all forms of discrimination, had accepted certain government demands.

Harvard University is yet to make a deal. It has previously cast Trump administration probes as “retaliatory actions against Harvard for its refusal to surrender our independence and constitutional rights.”

Florida Senate race set between Ashley Moody and Angie Nixon after projected primary wins

    August 18, 2026 / 11:33 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — GOP Sen. Ashley Moody and Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon will face off in November after winning their primaries for U.S. Senate on Tuesday night, The Associated Press projects.

Moody defeated a handful of lesser-known Republicans to secure the GOP nomination Tuesday as she fights to hold onto the seat she was appointed to fill last year. But Democrats are eyeing a long-shot pickup opportunity in the Sunshine State in their effort to flip control of the Senate.

Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, defeated Alex Vindman, a National Security Council whistleblower who testified in President Trump’s first impeachment trial, in Tuesday’s primary. The win marks the latest example of an insurgent Democrat pulling off a victory in the primary over a more moderate opponent with a significant cash advantage. It’s a dynamic that has defined the midterm elections so far, cropping up in races from New York City to Colorado to Michigan.

“Rep. Nixon ran a strong campaign. I will be standing by her side in the fight against Ashley Moody. I hope you’ll join me,” Vindman said in a statement Tuesday night.

In the primary, Nixon, 42, leaned on her deep roots in the state and ran on progressive policies like Medicare for All, free childcare, paid family and sick leave and a national rent freeze, while highlighting her background as a champion for working and middle-class Floridians. She’s represented portions of the Jacksonville area in the Florida statehouse since 2020.

“Like in many parts of the country, Florida voters were fed up,” Nixon said in a statement Tuesday night. “They made it clear that they want someone who will fight for the change that actually helps their lives such as lower costs, higher wages, Medicare for All, and a people-powered government that prioritizes families.”

“Winning the primary was only the beginning,” Nixon added. “We have 77 days to flip Florida blue, win this Senate seat, and help take back the U.S. Senate. And we cannot waste a single one. They tried to stop us. We won anyway. Now, we’re coming for the U.S. Senate.”

Meanwhile, a handful of Republicans, including Army veteran Chris Gleason, physician Neelam Perry and minister Ernie Rivera, had been vying for the GOP nomination. But Moody, a former Florida attorney general, secured the nomination, billing herself as a fifth-generation Floridian with a track record of backing law enforcement and fighting for safer communities.

The Florida Republican, 51, was appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis to replace Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Congress’ upper chamber. Now, she’s aiming to win the special election to serve out the remainder of his term, which ends in early 2029.

Moody served as Florida’s attorney general from 2019 until her appointment to the Senate in January 2025. Before that, she worked as a commercial litigator and federal prosecutor, and became Florida’s youngest circuit court judge in 2007. In the Senate, she’s been a reliable supporter of Mr. Trump’s agenda, and received his endorsement last month. Ahead of the primary, Mr. Trump said she’s “doing a tremendous job representing the incredible people of Florida.”

With the primary victories, attention now turns to November’s general election. Democrats have been hoping to make inroads in Florida, despite the formerly purple state becoming increasingly red in recent years. Florida last elected a Democrat to the Senate in 2012.

With 53 Republicans in the Senate, Democrats would need to win four seats to flip the chamber. But with limited opportunities for pickups, and a handful of their own seats to defend, Democrats’ ability to take back control of the chamber has appeared to be an uphill battle. With the race in Florida, they’re aiming to improve that picture.

Scandal-ridden Cory Mills ousted in GOP primary in Florida’s 7th District

Ryan Elijah defeated Trump-backed Rep. Cory Mills in the GOP primary in Florida’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday as the congressman faces numerous scandals, The Associated Press projects.

The embattled two-term congressman, who faced three primary opponents, struggled to raise money for his reelection bid as the House Ethics Committee investigates numerous allegations against him.

A former girlfriend accused Mills of threatening to release nude photos of her, prompting a judge to grant a restraining order against him last year. Police also investigated an incident early last year in which Mills was accused of physically assaulting another woman with whom he was in a relationship, though no charges resulted from the incident. The ethics panel is also looking into whether Mills violated campaign finance laws, misused congressional resources or improperly received gifts or special favors.

Mills has not been charged with any crime and has denied any wrongdoing.

But the allegations involving his treatment of women led some of his GOP colleagues to at one point consider possibly expelling him from the House.

Two of his Florida colleagues — GOP Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos — recently endorsed Elijah in the race, calling for “leaders in Congress who serve with integrity, energy, and an unwavering commitment to the people who sent them there.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stated last week, “I have not endorsed Cory Mills and I do not support Cory Mills.”

The University of Virginia’s Center for Politics rates the race as likely Republican, though Democrats see the district as up for grabs in November, especially if Mills had been on the ballot.

Mills has lagged in fundraising and has less than $70,000 in the bank, according to the latest data from the Federal Election Commission, which showed Elijah with more than $186,000 cash on hand. Elijah’s Democratic opponent, Bale Dalton, has more than $475,000 cash on hand.

Florida media executive Jim Schwartzel won the GOP nomination to succeed Rep. Byron Donalds despite President Donald Trump endorsing his opponent.

President Donald Trump endorsed Catalina Lauf, who served in the Department of Commerce during his first term in office, Aug. 13, upending the race just days before voters headed to the polls in Florida’s 19th Congressional District. Tuesday night’s results bucked a trend of Trump-endorsed candidates fairing well in primary contests.

As of mid-July, 97% of candidates endorsed by the president had won their primaries.

Trump’s endorsement success rate has remained at 93% or higher since 2018, according to Ballotpedia’s election tracker.

Lauf and Schwartzel weren’t the only candidates to throw their hats into the race to be Donalds’ successor.

The field in Florida’s 19th Congressional District also included former Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who lost his North Carolina seat after a series of scandals in 2022; former Rep. Chris Collins, a former New York congressman convicted of insider trading; and Jim Oberweis, a wealthy former Illinois state senator.

The unusual cast of characters running in the election attracted amusement and ridicule from the national media. Axios dubbed the race “the GOP’s carpetbagger primary” and wrote that “whoever claws their way through the circus-like primary is almost guaranteed a ticket to Washington.”

On the campaign trail, Schwartzel attacked Lauf for running for Congress twice in Illinois before recently moving to Florida, arguing that his ties to the state ran deeper than hers.

Lauf responded that she is a “blue state refugee,” not a “carpetbagger.”

“I came here, I didn’t have a choice to be born and raised in Illinois but I have a choice to live here,” she said during a July debate.

Lauf accused Schwartzel of being behind the firing of a popular local meteorologist. Schwartzel responded that although he owns several local media stations, he did not have an ownership stake in the network that fired the meteorologist.

Schwartzel said his supporters expressed anger after Trump endorsed Lauf.

“The president endorsed my opponent tonight. You’re hearing it from me before you hear it anywhere else,” he said on the night of the endorsement.

”But let’s be precise about where that anger belongs. Not with President Trump. I’ve supported him from the beginning, and I’ll support him after Tuesday.

“It belongs with the operation that worked this for months: the out-of-state super PACs that have poured millions into this district, the Washington consultants who packaged a candidate who ran for Congress twice in Illinois and sold her as Southwest Florida’s choice, the people who decided our seat shouldn’t be settled in a room a thousand miles from here.”
