特朗普18日在社交媒体平台发文说，将禁止美国有线电视新闻网（CNN）、MS NOW和政客新闻网（Politico）进入白宫，并指责三家媒体“报道假新闻”。

白宫19日正式禁止这三家新闻机构的记者进入白宫。

CNN、MS NOW和Politico星期一起诉特朗普及其他政府人员，指控有关行动违反美国宪法第一修正案赋予的言论自由和新闻自由权利。

三家新闻机构已向华盛顿特区联邦法院申请临时限制令，要求阻止特朗普的决定。法院定于23日举行听证会。

美国一项调查报告显示，57%的美国民众认为美国应该同中国开展友好合作与接触，延续了自2024年以来美国民众逐渐转向支持对华接触的趋势。

新华社报道，美国芝加哥全球事务委员会星期一（9月21日）发布报告说，该委员会2025年的调查显示，民主党人明显倾向支持与中国接触；最新调查则发现，共和党人也开始朝同一方向转变。共和党人支持与中国开展友好合作与接触的比例较2025年提高10个百分点，达到2019年以来最高水平。

报告认为，促使美国民众更加支持对华接触的一个重要因素，是越来越少的美国人将中国视为威胁。与2021年相比，如今更多美国人认为中国在世界上的受尊重程度正在提高。

此次调查于今年7月10日至21日进行，调查对象为美国50个州和首都华盛顿的2156名成年人。

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday said NYC welcomed all members of the media for a joint meeting with President Donald Trump, who recently banned certain media outlets from the White House.

The remarks came during a press conference at Gracie Mansion, where a reporter asked Mamdani whether he had challenged Trump on his decision to bar CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.

“I told the president that we’re going to have all of the members of the press here on the lawn. And that is something that I believe in, as everyone, no matter the opinion or the critique that we engage in,” Mamdani said.

Trump then took the stage, defending his decision and addressing the subsequent suspension of presidential pool coverage by the remaining television networks, which included FOX News Media, ABC News, CBS News, CNN and NBC News.

“It’s interesting because they said they were going to boycott me, but they never boycott me. So I wasn’t very worried about that. Look at all that press,” Trump said.

He then explained why he chose to engage with the outlets at Gracie Mansion despite what he described as their failure to fairly cover his accomplishments, including winning the election, settling wars and improving economic numbers.

“I’m only doing it because I think the press also has an obligation,” he said.

“We have the best economic numbers for the country in the history of our country. We have $21 trillion pouring in, the biggest number ever… Nobody’s ever done what we’ve done,” he added.

Trump then argued that allowing certain media outlets into the White House would be harmful to national security, accusing them of reporting what he called “fake news.”

“I never get anything positive. It’s always negative, even having to do with the war. We’ve done so well,” he said, referring to Iran.

“You would think that an outlet would write at least reasonably well, but never. If you look at CNN, it’s fake news,” he added.

Sept 21 (Reuters) – The US Department of Energy on Monday said it selected 21 projects for up to $99 million in ​funding to advance geothermal energy development, a source ‌of around-the-clock power that has attracted growing interest from investors and energy companies.

• The projects will receive up to $99 million to conduct field-scale ​tests of next-generation geothermal technologies and exploration drilling ​designed to identify promising geothermal resources across the ⁠United States.
• Five projects will conduct field tests of enhanced ​geothermal systems, or EGS, technologies, while 16 projects will focus ​on exploration drilling.
• Recipients include Fervo Energy FRVO.O, which was selected for two projects, including an enhanced geothermal systems demonstration in Idaho and exploration ​drilling in Nevada. Other selected companies include Quaise Energy, ​Zanskar Geothermal, XGS Energy and Invenergy.
• DOE will make data generated under the ‌projects ⁠publicly available through its Geothermal Data Repository to help guide future technology development and resource exploration.

WASHINGTON, Sept 21 (Reuters) – A man was convicted by a jury of attempted murder in the late 2023 shooting of three Palestinian ‌American students in Vermont, two of whom were wounded and one was left paralyzed from the waist down, prosecutors said on Monday.

Jason Eaton was found guilty on three counts of attempted second-degree murder for the shootings of Hisham ​Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad and Kinnan Abdalhamid on November 25, 2023, in Burlington, Vermont, prosecutor Sarah ​George, the Chittenden County state’s attorney, said in a statement.

The conviction rejected Eaton’s insanity ⁠defense and he will be sentenced at a later time, George said. A jury trial commenced ​in the Chittenden Superior Court a week ago and lasted till Monday.

Eaton faces a sentence of up ​to life without parole, with a presumptive minimum term of 20 years to serve on each count, George said.

The three Palestinian American students, who grew up in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, were walking in Burlington when Eaton approached and ​shot them, prosecutors and police said.

Awartani was paralyzed from the chest down and now lives with paraplegia, ​his family said. Aliahmad was struck in the chest and Abdalhamid was struck in the glute while running away, ‌according ⁠to prosecutors. Aliahmad and Abdalhamid were visiting Awartani’s grandmother over a Thanksgiving break from school.

All three were 20 at the time and wore black-and-white Palestinian keffiyeh scarves while conversing in a mix of English and Arabic when the gunman confronted them, prosecutors said. Their families said on Monday justice “has been rendered” and ​that they feel relief.

Though ​Eaton pleaded not guilty, ⁠he did not dispute being the shooter. His legal team said he should not be found guilty due to insanity, referring to his claims that ​US and Israeli intelligence ordered him to carry out the shooting through radio ​and that ⁠God asked him to protect Jewish neighbors.

US rights advocates have noted rising anti-Arab, anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish bias since the start of US ally Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza following a deadly October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.

Some fatal incidents that have ⁠sparked ​alarm include a 2023 deadly stabbing of a 6-year-old Palestinian ​American child in Illinois whose killer was sentenced to 53 years in prison and died in custody, and a 2026 San Diego mosque shooting ​that left five dead, including two teenage suspects.

A decision to invite New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to Manhattan’s annual Columbus Day Parade has sparked backlash among some Italian-American leaders.

The Columbus Citizens Foundation, which is responsible for holding the parade, invited Mamdani in the hopes of fostering a better relationship between City Hall and the Italian-American community, the New York Post reported. Mamdani’s past criticism of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, however, has sparked backlash among Italians who feel inviting the mayor is in poor taste.

“Are you kidding me? This is a WEAK and FECKLESS move by the organizers,” Italian American Civil Rights League president Mike Crispi wrote on X. “Zohran has showed contempt for our people and kissing a** won’t change his true feelings. Italian Americans need to wake up and get tough. It’s the only way to preserve our culture.”

Crispi’s criticism was a reference to a 2020 social media post where Mamdani posted a photo of himself brandishing his middle finger at a statue of Columbus with the caption “take it down.” Columbus holds a near-legendary status among Italian Americans, with the 15th-century explorer viewed by many as a historic link between their heritage and the United States.

“We feel cooperating is always the better path . . . and we hope to create a good relationship with his office,” Columbus Citizens Foundation president Christopher Loiacono told the New York Post when asked about his decision to invite Mamdani. “We hope he will be more open to [working] with the Italian community.”

It is unclear if Mamdani has accepted the invitation to the parade. Columbus Day falls on Monday, Oct. 12, with New York City’s annual Columbus Day Parade set for Manhattan.

“This is a man who has made it clear that he doesn’t respect Christopher Columbus, and he doesn’t even think us enough of a group to put on his immigrant enclave map,” New York City Councilwoman Joann Ariola, a Republican from Queens, wrote in response. “Why would he want to be there? To get pictures and pretend he’s a paisan now? He should sit this one out.”

Ariola’s comment was an apparent reference to a map of ethnic enclaves published by the city earlier this year that excluded Little Italy, which also sparked backlash from Italians. The map was initially created by the previous administration in 2023, and Mamdani said his administration added several neighborhoods before releasing the 2026 version.

Nonetheless, Mamdani has moved to update the map to include Little Italy.

A Columbus Day parade wouldn’t be the first public event Mamdani has attended this year to draw organized opposition to his presence. The mayor’s presence at the annual memorial service at Ground Zero on Sept. 11 spurred some family members of victims to circulate a petition demanding that he stay home.

“Just as Mamdani’s presence at the 9/11 Ceremony was inappropriate, we Italian/Americans don’t want him on Columbus Day either,” right-wing political operative Roger Stone wrote on X.

Some non-Italians are offended on behalf of the community.

“I’m not Italian but I’ve been an honorary dignitary for 5 years running at the Columbus Day Parade thanks to my friend Angelo Vivolo,” Jewish radio host Sid Rosenberg wrote on X. “The organizers of the parade invited [Mamdani] to attend? What? This Radical Islam mother fcker gave the finger to a Columbus statue and left Little Italy/Arthur Avenue OFF his bullsht immigrant map … When did my Italian brothers and sisters become so soft! … I will NOT attend this year if he is there.”

“The Italians need to step up and stop this!” he added.

Crispi has threatened to hold a competing Columbus Day parade next year if the Columbus Citizens Foundation does not revoke its invitation to the mayor.

Democrat who’s broken with his party before endorses Republican in battleground race

For national Democrats, Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York is a top target to beat in the midterm elections this fall.

On Monday, however, Rep. Jared Golden, a retiring moderate Democrat from Maine, endorsed Lawler.

It was the third time in recent weeks that Golden defied his party, arguing in an op-ed that Lawler is the exact kind of Republican that Democrats should be fighting to keep.

“We have real adversaries in this world, and they are not our fellow citizens. When candidates for office tell voters that the gravest danger to this country is other Americans and the leaders they elect, that is radical talk, and it is the same politics of fear I have refused to practice for my entire career,” Golden wrote in The Journal News.

Lawler’s upstate New York district is one of the few GOP-held seats that Kamala Harris won in the 2024 presidential election. Inside Elections rates the race in New York’s 17th Congressional District as a toss-up.

Golden has been a thorn in the side of his Democratic colleagues, especially in recent weeks. He voted twice with Republicans to advance procedural votes, including paving the way for the GOP to force a vote on a resolution denouncing socialism. The party will likely use the measure against Democrats on the campaign trail.

Golden’s move became a major flash point within the party as members discussed whether lawmakers should be penalized for voting with Republicans on procedural votes. So far, Democratic leaders have not carried out any punishment.

In his op-ed, Golden applauded Lawler for his work with him on a bill to support lobstermen, which the New York Republican didn’t exactly gain to benefit much from, Golden wrote.

“There is not a single lobster boat in his district. He got no votes in this and no headlines back home. He signed on because a historic American industry, thousands of fishing families, and the principle that federal rules should be built on facts were all on the line. And he understands that in every community, not just in Maine, mom-and-pop shops have been around for generations, and their livelihoods make up the very foundation of our communities,” Golden wrote.
