FIRST ON FOX:Morale is said to be high as the aircraft carrier the USS George Washington has arrived in the Arabian Sea near the vital Strait of Hormuz and close to Iran.
The carrier, CVN 73, has replaced the USS Abraham Lincoln. Fresh from a visit to Vietnam three weeks ago, the 5,000 sailors aboard this mobile airfield, base to approximately nine operational squadrons of advanced strike fighters, electronic attack planes and helicopter assets are, according to senior officers, ready and willing to carry out their new mission.
“Morale aboard USS George Washington remains high among our sailors,” Capt. Nicholas DeLeo, the ship’s Commanding Officer, told Fox News Digital. He added “I see this as I walk the deck plates, seeing them take pride in their work — whether conducting flight operations, maintaining our systems or supporting one another on the ship. The dedication and teamwork I see across the ship is outstanding, and that spirit keeps us ready and resilient.”

The George Washington, a Nimitz-class carrier, is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5, and is reported to be accompanied by several warships, including the guided missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls (CG 62) and the guided missile destroyer USS Shoup (DDG 86).
Commander of Carrier Strike Group Five, Rear Adm. Jeff Heames, told Fox News Digital “The teams aboard USS George Washington and Carrier Strike Group Five are ready, determined, and resourced for sustained operations. Our Sailors understand the importance of the mission and continue to execute with precision and professionalism every day.”
With the carrier group now operating in the Middle East, it falls under US Central Command (CENTCOM). The command’s former Commander, Gen. Joseph Votel, (Ret.), recently told Fox News’ America Reports about the George Washington’s expected mission, saying “Being able to continue to have credible military capability in the Middle East is really important, so the arrival of the George Washington is I think a good example of that.”
Votel continued, “We’re going to have to be prepared, because this is probably going to take some time, to continue to bring forces into the region, we want them to be at a high level of readiness.”

Flight operations continue, both day and night. Launching into the skies off Iran from the George Washington, aircraft based on board are reported to be F/A-18E/F Super Hornet multirole strike fighters, F-35C Lightning II fifth-generation stealth multirole fighters, EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft and E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning and control.
Also onboard are said to be MH-60S Seahawk & MH-60R Seahawk multi-mission helicopters for anti-submarine warfare and search-and-rescue.
This past week, a historic landing on the George Washington. Navy Lt. Steven Frazier, a pilot from Strike Fighter Squadron 147, the Argonauts, made the 200,000th trap – landing on the ship in an F-35C Lightning II fighter jet, with his stealth fighter caught by a thick, steel arresting gear cable with the jet’s tail hook.
In a laid-back understatement that could have come straight out of the movie ‘Top Gun’, Lt. Frazier said, “It’s a good feeling for me to know that once I leave, I can come back to the aircraft carrier and trap”. The carrier can land one aircraft on deck per minute, and typically lands 70 aircraft a day.

Attention to mission is evident throughout the ship. On the bridge, Assistant Navigator Elizabeth Wayne told the ship’s communication team, “all of the time when we are navigating, we are focused outside of the ship on anything that could pose a hazard or a threat to the ship.”
Wayne continued, “When we are in special evolution, when we are conducting flight operations, the most important thing is to ensure we are lock step with (the) airboss, the captain, the command duty officer underway, everybody needs to be on the same page to execute that safely.”
As it arrived in the Middle East, Russia tried to suggest the food on the carrier was not good. Russia Today (RT) posted what are believed to be AI-generated photos of poor rations on board. However, from the videos seen by Fox News Digital of great food and even a café below decks, the truth appears to be very different. Victoria Marc, Culinary Specialist 2nd Class, talked to the communications team on the carrier, noting that “throughout the day and into the night, our sailors have all sorts of food and drink options available to them.”
Marc added, “Sailors have the opportunity to eat three meals a day, plus the night rations. Our 150 cooks work 24 hours to prepare and serve 15,000 meals a day to ensure our sailors are well-fed. From the mess deck throughout the day, there’s always something there where people feel fueled and ready for the fight.”
And the Navy intends keeping it this way. Earlier this week, CENTCOM published images of the George Washington being replenished at sea. Navy images show the ship being resupplied twice in four days this past week, an average of 2,000 pallets of supplies including fresh food and ammunition winched by helicopter from a nearby supply ship.
Fuel for the carrier’s aircraft is also transferred ship-to-ship. The carrier is nuclear-powered, so the ship itself will not need refueling at sea.

Tributes poured in from everywhere this past week for the singer-songwriter, hailed as the queen of country music, who died Tuesday at the age of 80. Jane Fonda called her “the voluptuous embodiment of empathy.” Taylor Swift said she was “true grace and true grit, all in one dazzling person.”
Everyone has a Dolly story – and her story was everyone’s in return.
“I got to be pretty famous pretty quick,” she told “Sunday Morning” in 2022. “And I was very excited about that. Before I got that job, though, I had no car, no phone, no nothing. I’ve known the pain of that, and the joy of that.”
In her nearly 70 years of entertaining, she managed to bridge just about every gap. A poll taken five months before her death revealed 70% percent of Americans had a favorable view of Dolly Parton — that was the highest approval rating for any other luminary on the list by far.
Her warmth and wit, her unshakable honesty, and that Tennessee timbre that flowed like whiskey in songs about heartache, faith and fear, made Dolly Parton a once-in-a-generation talent. She was family, whether you liked country music or not.
“9 to 5” was one of some 3,000 songs she composed over her lifetime, from country, to gospel, to bluegrass. Legend has it she wrote “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” back-to-back.

It’s all pretty remarkable, especially given that Parton couldn’t read sheet music. But for her, songs came from the heart, not the page, as she once told Dan Rather for “Sunday Morning” in 2004:
“People like me, especially songwriters, people that live – in order to be a writer, you’re extremely sensitive. You have to leave yourself wide open, you know, to every feeling. But by doing that, you leave yourself very vulnerable to everything. Everything I do, I feel to the nth degree. I can’t eat just a little; I have to eat the whole thing. I can’t feel just a little; I have to love all the way … everything I do, I throw myself completely into it.”
Born in a two-room log cabin in the hills of Tennessee, Dolly Rebecca Parton was the fourth of 12 children. She says they were “dirt poor” and lived a country life you’d only understand if you’d lived it yourself. She said, “I’m pretty sharp. I’m not educated and I’m not that intelligent, but I’m smart, I’m country smart. You know how they say somebody’s ‘street smart’? I feel like if I’ve got to tell you, I’m country smart.”
Music, she says, was always around – especially at church, where she started singing at only six.

“My mom’s people were all musical,” Parton said. “And so, we played and sang at every funeral, every wedding, every shindig going on in town. Everyone in my family was, you know, in that.”
For all her fame, she kept her private life extremely private. She was married only once, to Carl Dean, who ran a road and driveway paving business. He passed away in 2025 at the age of 82, after 59 years of marriage. They never had any children together. As she told “Sunday Morning” in 2019, she did not regret that: “No, absolutely not. It wasn’t meant to be, and I don’t regret it. I never regretted it. I mean, it was a choice. You make your choices. You make your sacrifices.”
Fame was indeed a sacrifice – a dangerous one, she once revealed: “I was so depressed over my weight and a lot of other things, until I just finally thought: get off your fat ass, get on with your life. But out of that, I just had to sit down, take inventory, ask God to help me, lead me out of that, and I thought: you know, this is the best thing. In a few months, I really made a comeback, and I got my weight in order. I got my stuff in order, and I really put the rest of my life together.”
That life was also full of charity. She quietly supported disaster relief efforts, medical research, and youth literacy programs.
Her Imagination Library has delivered one book a month to pre-K kids since 1995 – amounting to millions and millions of free books to children all across the country.
“We didn’t have books in the house,” she explained. “Mama had the Bible. And I loved books at school, and I would read anything I could get my hands on.”
She was as self-aware as they come, genuine to a fault. When told that God had made her pretty, Parton responded: “Yeah, he did. But I helped Him some. God’s willing to help them who help themselves. … I’ve had a lots of work done. I’ll have more done when I need it. I always said, if I see something sagging, dragging and bagging, I’m gonna nip it, tuck it and suck it, whatever needs to be done.”
Her beauty, she said, is a hillbilly version of it, but it translated into an on-screen career that made acting so attractive. She could have fled her Tennessee roots for Hollywood, but she didn’t, so much so, she created a theme park around her upbringing. It wasn’t vanity – it was a testament to how far she’d come, and inspiration for those back in the hollers dreaming of something big.

Out of all the songs she recorded, she left one behind, called “My Place in History.” It’s locked in a time capsule that she asked not be opened until her 100th birthday – January 19, 2046.
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, said she “wanted to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because, after a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest.” Rest, indeed.
Asked by Tony Dokopuil how she wanted people to remember her 100 years from now, Parton quipped, “I want them to say, God, don’t she look good for her age?”

At least seven people have died after a ferry carrying nearly 270 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus on Sunday, Turkish media reported.
The prime minister of the breakaway north of ethnically divided Cyprus, Unal Ustel, said 237 people have been rescued. A search is underway for another 24 people, he told the Turkish state-run TRT news channel.
Ustel said the ferry faced adverse weather conditions and began taking on water just 15 minutes after departure. A call for help was issued shortly after, he said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered his condolences and said his government was coordinating with Northern Cyprus in the search and rescue effort.
“We hope we’ll be receiving positive news,” Erdogan said on Sunday in Ankara while speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Turkish Military Academy.

The catamaran-style ferry was traveling from the port of Kyrenia, also known as Girne, in the breakaway north of ethnically divided Cyprus, to the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province.
Kyrenia Mayor Murat Senkul said the ship belonged to the Filo Denizcilik ferry company and sank off the coast of Diana Beach on Cyprus’ northern coast.
The ferry started taking in water about 7.5 kilometers, or 4 nautical miles, off the coast, TRT reported.
Video footage from the scene shows people with life vests floating in the waters around the capsized vessel.
Constantinos Letymbiotis, spokesman for Cyprus’ internationally recognized government, said in a post on X Sunday that the government had expressed its readiness to assist in search and rescue efforts with all available means.
“In these trying times, our thoughts are with those who lost their lives, those who were injured and all those who are living this tragedy,” Letymbiotis said.
“At such times, the protection of human life is paramount.”

Nepal on high alert for fresh flooding after river levels rise as death toll soars past 800

Residents in flood-affected districts in Nepal were warned to remain on high alert for possible fresh flooding as rescuers scrambled to clear a major highway connecting Kathmandu to one of the areas worst hit by Wednesday’s catastrophic floods.
Nepal’s disaster agency said Sunday the death toll had climbed to 788 with 2,502 missing, while Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths and 546 missing on the Chinese side of the border.
The latest flood warning notices were sent to people’s phones early Sunday after water levels rose in the Bhotekoshi River. Chinese authorities informed their Nepalese counterparts of increased water flow upstream, according to Dharam Raj Uprety, chief executive of Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

Residents of the flood-hit villages said they were struggling to make sense of near-constant alarms they’ve received since the initial floods.
“Sometimes they say a flood is coming, then we have to run again to higher ground, even at night. There is also rain,” said Govind Shreshta, a resident. “It’s really difficult for me. I have a 72-year-old father and 70-year-old mom. I must carry them and I am exhausted. It’s going on like this for those who are still alive.”
In Dhading, one of the worst-hit regions in Nepal, some residents began returning to ruined homes to see what can be salvaged.
Residents sat in homes with walls washed away by the floods, shoveling sludge-like mud and rubble off balconies or window frames. Others scanned the ground for items they could pick out of the mud and rinse off. One man had returned for his chickens, which he found alive. He tied them up and put them in the cabin of his truck.
“Everything is finished. Nothing is left. Not even our home,” Sharmila Tamang, a Dhading resident who was trying to salvage items from her home, told The Associated Press.
At a key power plant that was severely damaged by the floods, workers started inspecting the facilities Sunday to survey the destruction. The plant serves over 20,000 people across four districts.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said on Sunday that there are currently 85 Americans unaccounted for in Nepal. Nine have been safely evacuated, he said on ABC’s “This Week,” adding that “we are currently unaware of any U.S. citizen deaths at this time.”
“Right now we’re in communication with them directly to assess those needs. We have a disaster area response advisor actually on the ground right now, in communication to see how best we can offer assistance,” Pigott said. “The situation on the ground, as you just saw, in terms of the mud and other things, means that we have to get the right assistance in there. Nepal government, we’re coordinating with them on what they need.”
The State Department on Saturday said it activated $3.6 million in emergency humanitarian assistance, including up to three months of food for up to 10,000 households.
The missing also include hundreds of people from over a dozen countries who were in the region to work, visit the mountains or make a pilgrimage to a sacred peak. On Sunday, Chinese state media said 261 foreigners were missing in Tibet, including over a hundred Nepalis and others from around the world.
Wednesday’s flash floods started after a glacial collapse high in the Himalayan region. Scientists who studied satellite images said bedrock underneath a glacier high in the Himalayan region had collapsed, taking part of the glacier with it. The rockfall was so extreme that it registered as magnitude 5.2.
The rocks and melted water then swelled the rivers in the valleys below, causing a torrent of water that swept buildings, bridges and earth downstream in Tibet and Nepal.
Nepal’s foreign minister called for a global response to climate change, saying Nepal was bearing a disproportionate share of its impact.
“Despite having only 0.1% contribution to the global emissions, people of Nepal have become major victims of climate change,” Shisir Khanal said Saturday.

Scientists have said it is too early to draw a direct connection between global warming and Wednesday’s catastrophe. However, they said that as Earth’s temperature rises because of human activities such as burning oil, gas and coal, the chances of such disasters increase, especially in the Himalayan mountains, which are warming considerably faster than many other parts of the world.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Sunday that his country will send a search-and-rescue team to Nepal to assist with relief efforts and help evacuate Malaysians affected by the disaster.
Malaysia has also pledged $1 million in financial aid to Nepal, he said in a statement.

A coalition of House Republicans is escalating its push for answers after lawmakers said New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill failed to address most of their questions about the state’s noncitizen voter-registration scandal and instead directed criticism at President Donald Trump.
Republican Study Committee member Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., told Fox News Digital there will be consequences after Sherrill sent a response that he characterized as “snarky” and politicized and said largely sidestepped the lawmakers’ questions.
“The response that we got from the governor was almost like she took a political mailer and embossed it upon her official letterhead,” Van Drew said. “As governor of the state of New Jersey, it was beneath her, it was beneath me, and it was unfortunate.”

“I state the obvious,” Van Drew said. “If you are an American, you should be voting in an American election. If you’re not an American, you shouldn’t be voting in an American election.”
Lawmakers focused their original inquiry on how the registration failure occurred, its potential consequences and how New Jersey would prevent another breakdown.

The July 24 letter from dozens of RSC members, led by Van Drew and Chairman August Pfluger, R-Texas, posed 12 specific questions about the registration failure and its potential impact.
Sherrill replied that affected residents have been mailed notifications, but Van Drew said the overall response failed to address Congress’ concerns.
“We’re not done with this,” Van Drew pledged.
Van Drew said he is planning a hearing as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee, with expert witnesses expected to testify.
Van Drew said he is working with the full committee under Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to get the requested information from Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell, the state’s elections chief.

“If there’s a complete lack of cooperation after we build up a case, there is a possibility, it’s not definite,” Van Drew said. “But if they’re not, we do, in my opinion, have to look at subpoenas as well.”
Sherrill defended her administration while criticizing Congress, Trump and the Republican-backed SAVE America Act.

“We are not letting this story get buried. It is high time we pass the SAVE America Act to make sure our elections are secure, transparent, and worthy of the public’s trust,” he said.
Rep. Christopher Smith, R-N.J., the state delegation’s most senior member and an RSC colleague, said Trenton must give Congress “complete transparency” and a corrective path forward.
