Top general fired by Trump administration criticizes use of military for political missions

The former top US general whom Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired last year criticized the use of the military for political missions in an op-ed published Friday, pointing to the Trump administration’s deployment of troops to clamp down on crime in major cities.

“(W)hen presidents use the armed forces for more politically contentious missions, such as addressing domestic crime in cities, the work of the military becomes more fraught,” former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Q. Brown wrote in Foreign Affairs, along with two other authors: Duke political science professor Peter Feaver and North Carolina lawyer Andrew Kragie.

“Resorting to a military solution rather than fixing the underlying incapacity or dysfunction in civilian institutions diverts the military from focusing on its primary combat mission,” the authors continued. “And … it is not the military’s job to save the republic from political impasses. Indeed, if you ask too much of the military, you risk the entire enterprise.”

Brown, a retired Air Force general and the second Black man to serve as America’s most senior general, was fired in February 2025, along with Admiral Lisa Franchetti, who was then the chief of the Navy and the first woman to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The move came as the administration has banned diversity and inclusion efforts across the military and government more generally.

At the Aspen Ideas Festival last week, Brown also expressed concerns over the administration’s firings of Pentagon officials, saying, “What’s starting to happen now is not about merit.”

“It’s important we understand that all these people that are being removed are very well experienced and my concern is that the impact it has on those that are still continuing to serve,” Brown said. “Are they going to have a fair opportunity to advance in their career going forth?”

The Foreign Affairs article did not directly criticize President Donald Trump or anyone in the current government. In one sentence, the authors mentioned both Trump and former President Joe Biden as having “looked to the military to play a leading role in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

But it referred to certain actions carried out by the Trump administration. Since Trump’s return to office, he has expanded the use of the military with the help of Hegseth. Last year, the administration deployed thousands of National Guard troops and hundreds of Marines, to crack down on crime in major cities, including Washington, DC, and Los Angeles.

On Thursday, Hegseth touted the work of the National Guard in Washington amid protesters, whom he called “ingrates.”

“They can’t see law and order and common sense in front of them, that there’s nothing ideological about this group, there’s nothing political about this exercise,” Hegseth said. “Law and order is something all Americans deserve.”

In the op-ed published Friday, Brown and his co-authors also addressed the ongoing celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary and what it means to be patriotic.

“Patriotism means recognizing the promise of America’s founding, the progress of its past, and the potential of a shared future,” the authors wrote.

“Service to a cause greater than oneself, a virtue cultivated in military training, is accessible to all regardless of whether they wear the uniform,” they continued. “In ways big and small, Americans can recognize this milestone of 250 years as a moment to rejuvenate the national interdependence that our founders proclaimed along with independence.”

CNN’s Oren Liebermann and Haley Britzky contributed to this report.

U.S. antitrust regulators said Friday they are closely monitoring oil markets for potential price-fixing or market monopolization, and they urged state attorneys general to assist in investigating unlawful conduct.

“Recent volatility in crude oil prices does not suspend either the antitrust laws or state consumer protection laws, and it does not authorize companies to manipulate retail prices or collude with their competitors,” said officials from the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission in a letter to states reviewed by CBS News.

“Business may not use market volatility as cover for anticompetitive practices, fraud, or any other lawlessness that harms Americans,” they added.

In the letter, Justice Department Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward, who oversees the Antitrust Division, and FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson also suggested that states could assist with policing price-gouging — an area in which the federal government does not have any enforcement authority.

“Although the Division and the Commission do not enforce any laws aimed specifically at price gouging rather than anticompetitive conduct, many States have also enacted laws specifically targeting price gouging during periods of market disruption or emergency, and we urge those states to review whether enforcement is warranted under those laws,” they added.

我们必须继续传承下去,让后代了解这种自由与 liberty(注:原文为liberty,译为“自由”),以及对伟大的追求。”

Republican unveils Declaration of Independence bill ahead of America’s 250th birthday

    July 3, 2026 8:00am EDT / Fox News

Congressman Van Epps says candidates backed by Democratic Socialist of America are ‘antithetical to the founding’

By Adam Pack, Alex Miller Fox News

Rep. Matt Van Epps, R-Tenn., says the measure is meant to reaffirm the country’s founding values — and push back on the rise of socialism in the Democratic Party.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

A newly elected Republican lawmaker is putting America’s founding principles back before Congress ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday, arguing the country must recommit to them as socialist ideas gain traction on the left.

Rep. Matt Van Epps, R-Tenn., unveiled legislation reaffirming the Declaration of Independence — a move he said follows a congressional tradition of marking major national anniversaries with the founding document.

“Congress did this in America 100 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary,” Van Epps told Fox News Digital in an interview. “We felt like this was the right time to do it so that generations forward understand that we love our country at America 250.”

The Tennessee Republican, who was elected in a December 2025 special election, said he filed the bill in response to socialism’s rise in the Democratic Party, with the far-left attempting a major power grab ahead of November’s midterm elections.

AMERICA’S NEXT 250 YEARS DEPEND ON PASSING FAITH AND FREEDOM TO OUR CHILDREN

Van Epps specifically referenced a slate of socialist candidates poised to serve in Congress after winning primaries in deep-blue districts anchored in New York City.

Democratic congressional nominee Darializa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old activist who won an upset victory against an establishment Democrat, has argued that the deportation of any illegal migrant is wrong, voiced support for the prison abolition movement and questioned Israel’s right to exist. She also co-founded a pro-Palestinian organization at Columbia University that called for “the total eradication of Western civilization.”

“These folks that are supported and endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America are antithetical to the founding,” Van Epps told Fox News Digital. “We’ve got to fight against that.”

“Socialism, Marxist, leftist ideas have failed every time they’ve been tried in the history of the world,” he continued, adding that those ideas are “not America at its core.”

“What the founders set out to do 250 years ago … We’ve got to continue so that the next generations know about that freedom and liberty and pursuing that greatness.”

It is unclear when the House will consider the resolution, as lawmakers left Washington early for the July 4 recess after a group of conservative Republicans effectively froze the floor in protest over the SAVE America Act and border security priorities.

MAMDANI-BACKED SOCIALIST IN HOT SEAT AGAIN OVER DELETED POSTS PRAISING COMMUNISM, MARXISM: ‘CRAZYPANTS’

Earlier this month, Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., also put the Declaration of Independence on the floor in the Senate, where it easily passed in the upper chamber.

Both Schmitt and Van Epps agreed to put forward companion legislation after playing in the annual Congressional baseball game ahead of America’s 250th birthday.

For Schmitt, it was to reinvigorate Americans’ pride in their country, which over the years, he contended, has steadily declined.

“A generation ago, American pride was nearly universal,” Schmitt said on the Senate floor at the time. “After 9/11, more than 90% of Americans said they were proud to be an American. Today, Gallup puts that number at 58%.”

He described the idea behind the document as an inheritance passed down through the generations to remind Americans why the founding fathers opted to wrench control of the colonies’ future from England, and carve their own path as a new nation.

“That inheritance now rests in our hands, and too many powerful voices in this country teach the next generation to receive it with suspicion instead of gratitude,” Schmitt said. “We are done being ashamed of America. We love our country. We honor the men who built it. We give thanks for the inheritance they placed in our hand, and we intend to keep it.”

    2026-07-03T14:48:19.444Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/03/politics/july-fourth-fireworks-trump-what-we-know

What we know about Trump’s July Fourth fireworks event

    2026-07-03T14:48:19.444Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/03/politics/july-fourth-fireworks-trump-what-we-know

President Donald Trump’s celebration for America’s 250th anniversary will culminate Saturday with a record-breaking fireworks show on the National Mall amid scorching temperatures and controversy over his efforts to put himself at the center of the commemoration.

Trump has teased lengthy remarks as part of the “Salute to America” event despite a dangerous heat wave’s potential to impact audiences.

During a Wednesday rally, the president dismissed any concerns about the heat stopping him from giving remarks. “By the way, on July Fourth, it’s going to be approximately 107 degrees out, and I’m going to go, and I’m going to make a really long speech just to show that I can do anything,” Trump said.

The high-profile remarks come as another piece of Trump’s 250th programming, the “Great American State Fair,” contends with modest crowds and logistical setbacks. Along with the fair, “Salute to America” is organized by Freedom 250 – a Trump-backed nonprofit tasked with putting on a series of semiquincentennial events that cater to the president’s cultural agenda. August will include a street “Freedom 250 Grand Prix” and a youth athletic contest branded as the “Patriot Games” with a grand prize of $250,000.

Freedom 250 has advised guests to arrive at the national park grounds no more than one hour before doors open at 5 p.m. ET to account for the heat. The event will feature performances from musical performances and a slew of military flyovers.

    Here’s what to know:

Ahead of the holiday weekend, a heat wave is tightening its grip on the East Coast and straining the electric grid as people seek to cool off in their air-conditioned homes and businesses. Washington, DC, has activated an extreme heat alert through July 5, as Saturday is expected to mark the hottest July Fourth that DC has ever recorded, boasting a current forecast of 101 degrees. The hottest July Fourth in the nation’s capital on record was 100 degrees in 1919.

The heat has throttled preparations. The US Capitol Police restricted attendance for a July 2 rehearsal event ahead of the annual “A Capitol Fourth Concert,” due to the excessive heat and gate openings were shifted later to account for weather on Friday.

Freedom 250 is offering complimentary water refills and misting stations scattered across the site as attendees battle high temps. Following a heat advisory, the group adjusted restrictions to allow attendees to bring an empty reusable, non-metal water bottle to refill at the hydration stations located on the park grounds. Rachel Reisner, a spokesperson for Freedom 250, told CNN the group will be handing out water bottles.

Attendees are prohibited from bringing backpacks, coolers, folding chairs, drones, firearms or aerosols like in previous celebrations, but food and beverages will be available for purchase and handheld fans are allowed inside the perimeter. This year’s event outlines a clear-bag policy the group says is designed to speed up security screening.

Despite looming concerns of yet another attempt on Trump’s life, as well as the ever-present lone-wolf threat, Washington, DC, is well positioned to secure these sorts of large-scale events, several officials involved in the planning previously told CNN.

Federal agencies will also be helping protect several other July Fourth celebrations across the US, including in Boston, California, Pennsylvania and New York.

Attendees in Washington, DC, will be screened through security magnetometers. The Secret Service, which is taking the lead for the July Fourth event, along with the FBI, Metropolitan Police and other federal and local police, will be juggling security for Trump’s airshow as well as the “Great American State Fair” taking place on the National Mall.

With extensive road closures in the district, event goers are encouraged to take public transit. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will be free after 5 p.m. ET and open until 2 a.m. ET.

The president’s attendance was a factor in making the celebration a National Special Security Event, USSS spokesperson Tom Lynch told CNN. The designation, also known as NSSE, is a common designation for major events that might be a target of criminals or terrorists. As a result, Lynch said the level of screening for this year’s celebration will be unlike any July Fourth in anyone’s recent memory.

Trump is expected to take the stage at 9:45 p.m. ET ahead of the 10:30 p.m. ET firework show, but the duration of his speech is unclear.

The president has billed the July Fourth event as a “Trump” rally and touted his prominent place in the Washington celebrations, despite criticism from Democrats that he’s turned the 250th commemoration into a partisan celebration more about him than the country.

Bowser initially announced the large annual fireworks show wouldn’t start until 11p.m. ET on the Fourth – two hours later than last year’s celebration, but the show will now begin at 10:30 p.m. ET and run for roughly 40 minutes.

The show is expected to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest firework display as nearly 850,000 fireworks shells will be launched from 10 sites spanning the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Potomac River barges and West Potomac Park. The current benchmark is 810,904 fireworks at a 2016 New Years countdown celebration in the Philippines. The capital’s spectacle will be about 10 times bigger than Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Show in New York, which is typically the nation’s largest Independence Day bash.

The fireworks show is estimated to cost $850,000, CNN previously reported.

Fireworks create smoke pollution that sometimes rivals what comes from wildfires and can linger in the air for several hours. In some cities, air quality often doesn’t return to normal until around noon the next day, and the hot air could lengthen the process.

But even before any fireworks are lit in some urban areas, the heat will have already created another type of air pollution, ground-level ozone, formed from the mingling of vehicle exhaust, heat and sunlight. That ozone can irritate our lungs — potentially worsening air quality before any nighttime celebrations. Scorching locations, including in DC, are forecast to experience at least moderate amounts of ground-level ozone during the day.

When asked if the Environmental Protection Agency is tracking any air pollution impact as a result of the fireworks show, EPA press secretary Brigit Hirsch told CNN, “Fireworks are awesome and we hope everyone enjoys the incredible shows in and around our nation’s capital as we celebrate 250 years of America.”

For those watching at home, major networks will be broadcasting special coverage. CNN will have live coverage starting at 12 p.m. ET.

Fireworks are set to launch from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool – a site of much recent controversy and curiosity since blue material at the bottom of the pool began peeling off. The pool was painted blue and refilled after Trump ordered a $14-million renovation.

In the weeks following the costly vanity project, the president claimed that vandals damaged the algae-plagued Reflecting Pool and vowed to repair it. A former Olympic canoeist was indicted by a grand jury in Washington on Thursday for allegedly damaging the Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial. US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said Thursday that there are “about a half dozen” other cases the US attorney’s office is investigating.

CNN’s Piper Hudspeth Blackburn, Holmes Lybrand, Kristen Holmes, Adam Cancryn and Kasha Patel contributed to this report.

Trump likely to pardon pollution violators as he privately weighs clemency for Diddy, other high-profile figures: sources

    July 3, 2026 / 11:14 AM EDT / CBS News

President Trump is poised to pardon a slate of people convicted of emissions and clean air-related violations, and is still discussing other potential acts of clemency, including for Sean “Diddy” Combs or several other well-known figures, according to sources familiar with his plans.

The president was scheduled to have a meeting Friday afternoon on the topic of pardons and planned to decide based on recommendations from advisers, two of the sources said.

Lobbying for pardons for people in legal trouble has reached a fever pitch in recent weeks.

But neither Combs nor other high-profile cases were expected to be on the recommendations list from the pardons team, one of the sources said.

Combs is serving a sentence of just over four years in the federal prison in Fort Dix, New Jersey, after he was convicted last year of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, which were the more serious charges against him.

Mr. Trump hadn’t committed on Friday morning to a firm number of people who will receive clemency. He has been privately discussing whether to grant requests, including from Combs, one of the sources said.

“President Trump is the ultimate decider on any clemency related actions,” a White House official told CBS News in a statement.

The president told the New York Times in January that Combs had written a letter to him to ask for a pardon but said he was not considering the request.

Another person who has been seeking a pardon is Grammy Award-winning rapper Prakazrel “Pras” Michel of The Fugees hip-hop group. Michel is currently in federal prison serving a 14-year sentence, after he was convicted of criminal charges that he conspired with Malaysian financier Jho Low to orchestrate a series of foreign lobbying campaigns aimed at influencing the U.S. government under two presidents.

Low is also accused by the U.S. of embezzling $4.5 billion from Malaysia’s 1MDB sovereign wealth fund. Several sources familiar with the matter told CBS News Low is also seeking a pardon.

Mr. Trump had not yet decided whether Michel or Low should receive clemency, one of the sources said.

Friday’s list from the pardons team was expected to be exclusively related to Clean Air Act violations.

Last year, Mr. Trump pardoned Wyoming mechanic Troy Lake, who served seven months in prison for violating federal emissions laws for disabling air pollution-control equipment on diesel engines.

Earlier this year, CBS News was the first to report that the Justice Department had ordered federal prosecutors to drop all remaining prosecutions and investigations targeting others like Lake in connection with the sale of illicit “defeat devices” that are used to tamper with pollution control systems in diesel-powered vehicles.

The edict, issued by then-Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, marked the first time that the Justice Department formally took steps to scale back environmental criminal enforcement since Mr. Trump took office in 2025. Blanche said at the time he was dismissing the cases “to ensure consistent and fair prosecution under the law, as well as to ensure the best use of Department resources.”
