    2026-09-01T13:21:14.950Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/01/politics/vance-jewish-gop-2028

JD Vance confronts Jewish GOP skeptics ahead of a potential 2028 run

    2026-09-01T13:21:14.950Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/01/politics/vance-jewish-gop-2028

    Las Vegas—

Vice President JD Vance has in recent months given voice to a rising skepticism in America toward Israel, leaving some Jewish Republicans uncomfortable, if not openly concerned, about the expected GOP frontrunner in the next presidential election.

Some Jewish GOP activists have expressed a preference for Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while other ambitious Republicans have worked to stir doubt about Vance’s pro-Israel credentials. Among them is Sen. Ted Cruz, who recently said the party has not coalesced around Vance ahead of 2028 and that there will be a “full discussion” about what the party stands for before then.

Vance addressed those criticisms Monday night with the Republican Jewish Coalition, a coalition group of influential political activists and donors, hours after he campaigned against Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan’s Democratic nominee for US Senate.

Reporters were kept one floor below the room at the Venetian in Las Vegas where Vance spoke with RJC members. CNN obtained audio of Vance’s remarks from a person who attended the roughly 45-minute “fireside chat” with Norm Coleman, the former Minnesota senator who is the national chairman of the RJC board. Vance did not take audience questions, but the moderated conversation veered into sensitive territory on a few occasions.

At one point, Vance raised “some of the obvious elephants in the room,” referring to growing skepticism of the US-Israel relationship among young people. Vance said Republicans need to “actually get out there and talk about the ways in which it is in the best interest of the United States of America.”

Then there was Tucker Carlson, who has argued the US should drop Israel as an ally and came up when Coleman asked about how Vance decides on which media platforms to appear. Coleman said Carlson, as well as Megyn Kelly, Joe Rogan and Nick Fuentes, “have platformed antisemites.”

“I recognize a lot of people in this room might disagree with things that Tucker Carlson or Megyn Kelly or Joe Rogan has said,” Vance said, proceeding to distinguish Rogan from Fuentes in particular, saying they are “very, very different” people. Fuentes, who was hosted by President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in 2022, is a White nationalist and Holocaust denier.

Vance otherwise defended his engagement with the media personalities, saying Republicans need “to be willing to go everywhere and bring our message anywhere and to any person.”

The RJC’s CEO, Matt Brooks, told reporters earlier Monday that the group decided to keep the event private to allow for an “open and honest” conversation. And he said the RJC also invited Rubio and Cruz to speak, but they could not make it for various reasons.

It was Vance’s first time coming to the RJC gathering since 2022, when he was a candidate for Senate in Ohio and attended the event but did not speak. Much has changed inside the GOP since then, with Israel’s war in Gaza following Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attacks – and the US and Israel launching the more recent war in Iran – coinciding with a drop in public support for Israel across party lines.

It is a concerning direction for the highly engaged political donors and activists who make up the RJC and could play an outsize role in picking the next GOP presidential nominee. The group is closely aligned with Miriam Adelson, the widow of the casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and a leading donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign effort, giving more than $100 million.

It was unclear if Adelson, who has attended past RJC summits, was present for Vance’s remarks. But RJC leaders who spoke to reporters afterward praised him.

“The vice president really helped himself tonight,” Ari Fleischer, the former White House press secretary who is now an RJC board member, told reporters afterward. “He answered a lot of questions that people had about where his heart is.”

Not everyone was as impressed. Some attendees say he failed to fully address what they saw as a major issue – Carlson.

“He totally deflected,” said Shabbos Kestenbaum, a Gen Z Jewish activist, predicting Carlson would “continue to dog” Vance like the far-left streamer Hasan Piker has been linked to El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate race.

Carlson did not respond to a request for comment on Vance’s appearance at the RJC meeting. But Vance has declined to disavow Carlson even after Trump had a falling out with the former Fox News host over the Iran war and has called him “totally irrelevant.” Carlson has apologized for backing Trump and said he would no longer support the Republican Party.

During a June podcast interview, Carlson said he will always consider Vance a friend and lamented that Trump had put him in an “impossible situation” by pursuing foreign conflicts at odds with their 2024 campaign promises.

“I feel sorry for JD Vance,” Carlson said.

Vance’s views on Israel have been especially scrutinized since he took the lead in promoting an Iran peace deal that was struck in June but has since collapsed. Referring to reports of Israeli government officials criticizing the deal upon its unveiling, Vance warned them against “attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left in the entire world.”

Days later, during an interview with podcast host Joe Rogan, Vance accused some in the Israeli government of trying to manipulate American public opinion to undermine the deal.

Vance regularly condemns antisemitism and has disavowed Fuentes by name, calling him a “total loser.” But in a December 2025 interview with NBC News, he said he did not think antisemitism was “exploding” on the right, and he has avoided criticizing Carlson as he has become anathema to many Jewish Republicans.

“Tucker’s a friend of mine. Do I have disagreements with Tucker Carlson? Sure. I have disagreements with most of my friends, especially those who work in politics,” Vance said in a December 2025 podcast interview.

Vance’s answers on Monday night, which did not address Carlson any further, fell flat with some attendees. One of them said he had the opportunity to disavow Carlson and disappointed “many” when he “ducked the Tucker issue altogether.”

Sid Rosenberg, a New York City radio host, also panned the answer in an X post that said Vance’s overall remarks were “not strong enough on Israel.” Earlier in the day, Rosenberg had urged the RJC crowd to “give Vance a chance.”

One attendee summed up Vance’s response as: “I got to go talk to these guys, I got to go carry the message.” The attendee indicated they were mostly sympathetic to the argument, even if it did not fully grapple with the issue of Carlson.

Stuart Weil, an RJC member from California, said he walked away from Vance’s remarks feeling that concerns about his positions on Israel were overblown.

“I have no fear of supporting JD Vance as the president of the United States,” Weil said.

Ron Dermer, the former Israeli ambassador to the United States and a longtime adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, offered notable praise for Vance during the conference. At the same time, Dermer recalled a 2022 lunch they had in Jerusalem where Vance “asked me a lot of questions about why this serves US interests.”

“I had no problem making that [case],” Dermer said. “There’s a simple answer to that, and that’s that Americans’ interests are served by working closely with Israel, so that didn’t concern me at all.”

Among those who watched Vance on Monday night was Ruby Chen, the father of a slain Israeli-American hostage, Itay Chen. Ruby Chen met with Vance last year.

“Having the privilege of meeting President (Joe) Biden, he felt about Israel in the kishke,” Chen said, using the Yiddish slang term for guts or stomach. “I think President Trump has that gene inside of him as well when it comes to the state of Israel. I think JD Vance, if he becomes president, he looks at it in more of an analytical viewpoint, for good or for bad.”

Hours before arriving here, Vance visited Michigan to campaign for Senate candidate Mike Rogers in arguably the most important race for RJC members in the midterms. El-Sayed, who is Muslim, made criticisms of pro-Israel spending central to his primary campaign and accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, an allegation the Israeli government denies.

Speaking in suburban Detroit, Vance criticized El-Sayed over his initial response to a March attack on a Detroit-area synagogue, noting the synagogue’s rabbi and security guards were attending Monday afternoon’s event. El-Sayed has spent recent days apologizing to Jewish Democrats in the state for that response, in which he said that “hurt people hurt people.”

As much as the midterm race is galvanizing Jewish Republicans, it was hard Monday to escape the early contours of the 2028 primary.

Cruz assailed Carlson as “the most dangerous demagogue” in the country, and last month, the senator’s allies launched a new group to fight antisemitism on the right, Front Line Action, that helped defeat two candidates in the Florida primaries.

Eric Levine, an RJC board member, said Cruz has been “a perfect example” of a Republican taking on Carlson, but noted there has been “no shortage” of Republicans speaking out.

Gabe Groisman, a Republican strategist and former RJC board member from Florida, acknowledged there were “concerns” about how Vance navigates this fraught moment inside the party. But he also said there is “a lot of hope that his position, while it is nuanced or may come at a different angle from President Trump, is still very strong on the American Jewish community.”

“Most people believe that when it is time for him to really express his positions,” Groisman said, “it’s going to be positions that people are comfortable with.”

Still, Groisman added, “it’s not automatic for him or for anybody.”

IRS audit revenue plunged following mass layoffs, Treasury watchdog finds

    September 1, 2026 / 11:11 AM EDT / CBS News

Revenue from IRS audits plunged 35% in fiscal 2025 as the agency shed thousands of enforcement workers, according to a new report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, an agency watchdog.

The IRS collected a total of $6.5 billion from audits in fiscal 2025, which ended Sept. 30, down from $10 billion a year earlier, TIGTA said in its Aug. 26 report.

The group said that the number of IRS employees working in auditing and collections had dropped to 17,517 as of January 2026, a decline of almost 10,000 workers from fiscal 2024. The report added that the impact of the staff reductions may “become more apparent over time.”

“These losses present a challenge to improving taxpayer service and enforcing the nation’s tax laws,” the tax watchdog said. “We are concerned about how staffing losses are impacting the IRS’s ability to ensure that it meets department priorities.”

    Tax auditor exodus

The findings come after TIGTA last year found that the IRS lost one-third of its tax auditors during the first three months of the Trump administration. The employment decline was due to cost-cutting efforts by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which sought to slash the federal workforce through a combination of layoffs and so-called deferred resignations.

The Treasury watchdog noted that because audits can take years to complete, some of the declines could be reversed as more cases are closed.

The IRS initiated 17% more large corporate audits in fiscal 2025 than a year earlier. But audits of new business partnerships fell 30% as a major reorganization at the agency shifted employees and delayed training for some revenue agents, the report said.

The IRS also started fewer audits of wealthy taxpayers. Agency staffers opened about 43,000 examinations of individuals with income over $400,000 in fiscal 2025, down 26% from a year earlier. As of January 2026, the agency’s Global High Wealth program had 27% fewer employees than before the fiscal 2025 workforce reductions.

The IRS and Treasury didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Despite the decline in audit revenue, the IRS collected more total tax revenue in fiscal 2025 than the prior year, with federal taxes paid by taxpayers rising to $5.3 trillion, up 4.2% from the prior fiscal year, according to the Treasury watchdog group.

    IRS funding cuts

The drop in audit revenue marks a reversal from 2024, when the IRS planned to boost tax revenue through audits of wealthy taxpayers and corporations. Under the Biden administration, the Inflation Reduction Act directed $80 billion in funding to the IRS, enabling it to hire more auditors and revenue collectors.

In early 2024, the IRS forecast that the additional funding would help it reap hundreds of billions of dollars in additional tax revenue by pursuing overdue and unpaid taxes. However, Republican lawmakers warned that IRS auditors would target everyday Americans and cut billions in IRS funding.

The Trump administration has proposed additional IRS funding cuts for 2027. Policy experts have warned that further shrinking the agency’s budget could make it harder to collect overdue taxes and go after tax cheats.

“The agency has fewer revenue agents, who audit the most complicated tax returns, than it has had since the 1950s, when the economy was far smaller and the tax code was far less complex,” tax analysts with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a nonpartisan think tank, wrote in a June blog post.

They added, “Research shows that every dollar spent on IRS tax enforcement raises multiple dollars in revenue, which means that every dollar cut from IRS enforcement loses more than a dollar of revenue and adds to the deficit.”

Majority of Americans oppose Trump’s new Canada tariffs, renaming Lake Ontario, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds

    Summary

Only 20% support higher Canada tariffs while 57% oppose them, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds.

WASHINGTON, Sept 1 (Reuters) – A majority of Americans oppose President Donald Trump’s moves last week to raise taxes on imported Canadian goods and his order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

The three-day poll, which concluded on Sunday, showed Americans are wary of the feud with Canada — for decades a top U.S. trading partner — which has escalated since trade talks between the two countries collapsed and Trump last week ordered the hike in tariffs on Canadian goods.

Only 20% of poll respondents supported higher tariffs on Canadian goods compared to 57% who opposed them and 21% who couldn’t say where they stood. About one in five poll respondents hadn’t heard about the development.

U.S. households are already under financial pressure from the surge in gasoline prices since Trump launched a war on Iran in February, and American voters rate the cost of living as the top issue determining how they will vote in November 3 midterm elections. Trump’s Republican allies will be defending slim congressional majorities in the elections. Trump’s approval rating in recent weeks has been mired at the lowest level of his political career.

The trade conflict took a theatrical turn last week when Trump on Thursday renamed Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes of North America, as “Lake America.” Trump’s designation applies to U.S. federal usage about the lake, and does not govern what Canada, international bodies or other organizations call the lake. The president has often ribbed Canada, threatening to annex the longtime ally as a 51st U.S. state. He ordered the Gulf of Mexico be renamed the “Gulf of America” at the start of his second term in January 2025.

Just 14% of Americans in the Reuters/Ipsos poll said they supported changing the name of Lake Ontario, which has gone by that name for more than 400 years. Sixty-three percent of poll respondents opposed the name change and the rest were unsure or didn’t answer the question.

Republicans and Democrats are deploying increasingly aggressive tactics to shape the 2026 midterms — including efforts to influence rival primaries, obscure political spending and exploit election deadlines.

Both parties are accusing one another of using cynical tactics to influence voters and shape the field ahead of Election Day, even as operatives aligned with each of them employ similar strategies. Those maneuvers have included routing millions of dollars through deceptively named political committees to influence rival primaries and using filing deadlines in ways that gave favored successors a clearer path to the ballot.

Many of these schemes are being carried out in key races, meaning that control of Congress may come down to what many view as cheap tricks — a prospect that could serve to further erode public trust in government.

    The tale of three Dans

Two separate individuals named Dan Sullivan are running for Senate in Alaska, and a third just endorsed one over the other.

ALASKA SENATE RACE’S ABSURD NAME PROBLEM GETS EVEN HARDER TO UNTANGLE

Republicans have argued that the confusing state of affairs in Alaska is the product of a Democratic ploy to disorient voters.

Incumbent GOP Sen. Dan S. Sullivan is facing a challenge from teacher Dan J. Sullivan, whom Republicans have accused of running as a Republican solely to confuse voters to the benefit of Democrats. Alaska’s electoral system allows the top-four vote-getters in the state’s nonpartisan primary to advance to the ranked-choice general election.

Fox News Power Rankings rates the Alaska Senate race as a toss-up, meaning neither party currently has a clear advantage. If enough voters confuse Dan S. Sullivan with Dan J. Sullivan, it could be enough to give Democratic nominee Mary Peltola an edge.

Republicans point to the fact that Dan J. Sullivan worked with a Democratic-aligned consultant as evidence that he is part of a plot to siphon voters off of Dan S. Sullivan. Dan J. Sullivan, meanwhile, maintains that he is an actual Republican with legitimate grievances as to the incumbent senator’s representation of his state.

A third Dan Sullivan, the former mayor of Anchorage, recently waded into the Senate race to endorse Dan S. Sullivan.

Dan J. Sullivan is reportedly being investigated by the Justice Department and Alaska election officials in separate probes examining whether he sought to deliberately mislead voters. The investigation follows a failed Republican legal effort to remove him from the ballot.

    Texas primary games

The National Republican Senatorial Committee reportedly worked behind the scenes to encourage Rep. Jasmine Crockett to enter Texas’ Democratic Senate primary. Once she entered, other Republican actors also ran messaging that Democrats argued could help her with primary voters.

One source familiar with the process dubbed it an “AstroTurf recruitment process” when speaking with NOTUS in 2025.

The NRSC began its alleged campaign by releasing a poll showing Crockett, who was believed by some to be a weaker candidate in the general election than Texas state Rep. James Talarico, leading the field in a hypothetical Democratic primary. Prior to the NRSC’s poll, Crockett had not been included in most primary surveys.

That quickly changed and subsequent polls showed Crockett pulling in considerable support. The congresswoman ultimately cited the strong polling as part of her motivation in entering the race.

MORNING GLORY: ALASKA’S ‘REAL’ SENATOR DAN SULLIVAN STOOD UP OVER CHALLENGER

The source who spoke to NOTUS claimed that the NRSC worked diligently to spread those polls in progressive digital spaces and drum up support for Crockett. Once she entered the race, conservative political committees ran ads ostensibly criticizing her liberal record, though critics argued this was merely an underhanded tactic to get more Democrats to support her by publicizing positions that are generally popular with the Democratic base.

Multiple Republicans also said publicly that they were concerned about her candidacy, statements that could entice liberal voters to throw their support behind her.

Even with Crockett defeated, tensions from the bruising primary have lingered, with some Black elected officials and activists pressing Talarico to do more to address concerns among voters who overwhelmingly backed Crockett.

    In(D)ependents and money movers

A network of Democratic donors, dark-money groups and left-leaning super PACs has spent well over $10 million backing five independents in Republican-leaning areas.

Critics of the strategy see it as a way for liberals to sneak left-leaning lawmakers into Congress by eschewing the branding of the Democratic Party. Though the candidates identify themselves as independents, skeptics hold that they’ll vote like Democrats if elected, a charge many of them deny, stressing their independence.

In the Nebraska, Idaho and South Dakota Senate races, for instance, the Democratic nominees withdrew from their races, which Republicans have pointed to as evidence that the party is using independent candidates as a backdoor to get liberals into Congress.

GOP SENATOR, EX-HOUSE DEM EMERGE FROM ALASKA’S ‘JUNGLE PRIMARY’ DESPITE FAR-LEFT MEDDLING

“Dan has taken small-dollar donations from Republicans, Independents, and Democrats from all 93 of Nebraska’s counties who are done being taken advantage of by D.C. lobbyists, corporate PACs, and party bosses,” a campaign spokesperson for Dan Osborn, the independent running in Nebraska, told Fox News Digital. “Ricketts has been running from his record all campaign and has resorted to lying about Dan because he’s scared.”

On the other side of the aisle, Republican political operatives have admitted to using deceptively named super PACs to boost far-left Democratic candidates in primary elections as part of a strategy to elevate easier-to-defeat opponents.

Conservative Americans PAC, a super PAC funded by the right-leaning dark money group American Prosperity Alliance, funneled millions of dollars into three ostensibly left-leaning committees called Lead Left PAC, Real Change PAC and California Blue PAC.

The seemingly liberal committees, in turn, spent large sums of money backing candidates in Democratic primaries widely believed to be weaker general election contenders than their opponents.

Conservative Americans PAC was able to do this undetected because the ostensibly liberal PACs were formed sufficiently late such that disclosures revealing the right-wing funding did not need to be released until after the primary elections were over. This means that, as the ads were rolling, voters had no way of knowing who was paying for them.

“Republicans are leveling the playing field after over a decade of Democrats meddling in our primaries, and with the Democrat Party in the midst of a civil war, Republicans would be stupid not to take advantage while pushing their candidates farther left,” a spokeswoman for Conservative Americans PAC said of the spending.

    Phantom polling

Some political polls that circulated widely this cycle were later revealed to have been fabricated.

Median Strategies, an organization recently revealed to have been run by a 21-year-old, released polls on the Los Angeles mayoral election as well as the Wisconsin and Nevada gubernatorial elections that circulated through the media ecosystem, drawing coverage from news outlets and even being touted by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

After members of the press began raising scrutiny, however, Median Strategies folded and admitted that its polls were fake to the Los Angeles Times.

ALASKA REPUBLICANS SCRAMBLE TO EDUCATE VOTERS ON SUSPECTED DEM PLANT AS ‘BALLOT FATIGUE’ THREATENS RACE

“Median Strategies was created as a short term social experiment to examine how purported polling information could enter and spread through the political information ecosystem without independent verification,” the company said in an email to the Times.

The fake polling outfit pushed polls claiming that Bass was leading her DSA-aligned rival by a significant margin and that Wisconsin state lawmaker Francesca Hong, who ultimately lost her primary, had a commanding lead over other Democrats.

    Paperwork workaround

Sen. Steve Daines, a Republican from Montana, suspended his re-election campaign just minutes before the filing deadline for candidates.

While this may seem puzzling on its own, Kurt Alme, Daines’ preferred successor, filed paperwork to run for Senate just minutes before the senator withdrew.

When a sitting member of Congress retires, top-tier candidates typically throw their hats into the ring to take advantage of the fact that there won’t be an incumbent to run against. Because Daines held off retiring to the last moment, and seemingly coordinated with Alme, he effectively cleared the field for him, as no high-profile Republicans filed to run in Montana’s Senate primary.

“They obviously did this to keep certain people out of these races,” former Democratic Montana Sen. Jon Tester said of the maneuver. “It wasn’t an accident.”

Daines wasn’t the only one to leverage filing deadlines in this manner.

Rep. Chuy Garcia, a Chicago-area Democrat, decided not to seek reelection, while his congressional chief of staff had gathered the signatures necessary to appear on the Democratic primary ballot. Once again, the maneuver effectively cleared the way for a lawmaker’s chosen successor.

Garcia cited health problems when explaining his sudden decision to retire, though he called criticisms over how the situation looked “fair.”
