U.S. launches strikes against Iran to retaliate for attacks on 3 tankers in Strait of Hormuz

    July 7, 2026 / 7:30 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Eleanor Watson, Charlie D’Agata

Washington — U.S. forces began launching strikes Tuesday against Iran to retaliate for the regime’s attacks on commercial ships, U.S. Central Command said.

The retaliatory strikes are in response to attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps over the past two days on three commercial vessels that were traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.

“Iran’s demonstrated aggression was unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire,” U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted on X.

The attacks on the three tankers in the strait, which were confirmed by two U.S. officials, marked a sharp escalation that threatens to unravel the fragile diplomatic effort aimed at restoring security to one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.

The Iranian attacks on the commercial shipping vessels come on the heels of Iran’s drone strike on a Singapore-flagged commercial vessel last week and just after Washington and Tehran had agreed to suspend hostilities and pursue indirect negotiations over maritime security following months of military confrontation.

The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations agency issued warnings of one attack on Monday and two Tuesday without naming the vessels targeted.

One of the attacks was carried out by an uncrewed aerial vehicle or drone, according to the advisories, while the other two tankers were targeted by unknown projectiles. No casualties were reported.

In a statement Tuesday, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it condemned the Islamic Republic of Iran’s targeting of the Vijian, a Saudi tanker, and Rakiyat, a Qatari tanker.

The U.S. on Tuesday also revoked Iran’s general license to export oil in response to Iran’s strikes against the three vessels.

“The Office of Foreign Assets Control is revoking GL X, which authorized the sale of Iranian oil,” a U.S. official told CBS News. “As President Trump and the administration have repeatedly affirmed, the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) in effect with Iran is entirely performance-based.”

The U.S. official added: “Iran will only reap benefits if they exhibit good behavior. Iran’s actions in the Strait were wholly unacceptable to the United States and will be met with consequences. Our negotiators continue to work in good faith towards a final deal.”

Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said the U.S.’ revocation of the Iranian oil sales licenses “constitutes a blatant violation of Article 10, and the subsequent military operations of this country against Iran also constitute a serious violation of Articles 1 and 2 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.”

Gharibabadi also warned that Iran would “take decisive actions to safeguard its national interest and security” because of Israel’s actions in Lebanon and the U.S.’ “threatening statements against Iran.”

James LaPorta, Kristin Brown and Richard Escobedo contributed to this report.

WATCH: Mike Waltz tells Cuban delegation ‘this is not Havana’ during heated UN speech

Cuba’s foreign minister accused the United States of committing an “act of war” by restricting fuel shipments to the island Tuesday, prompting U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz to deliver a forceful response blaming Cuba’s communist government for years of blackouts, repression and economic collapse.

The confrontation unfolded at the U.N. General Assembly one day after Cuba’s national electrical grid collapsed, leaving nearly 10 million people without power. It was the third nationwide grid failure this year and the eighth since October 2025, Reuters reported.

Cuban officials had restored electricity to parts of central Cuba and roughly one-third of Havana by Tuesday morning, although large areas remained offline or faced unstable service, according to Reuters.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez told delegates that the Trump administration was carrying out a “multidimensional, non-conventional war” against Cuba that had grown “more cruel and ruthless in the last seven months.”

Rodríguez described U.S. efforts to restrict fuel deliveries as the imposition of “an energy collapse, equivalent to a naval blockade, which is an act of war,” according to a UNTV transcript.

Waltz rejected the claim that the United States had established a naval blockade around Cuba.

“There is no ring of Navy warships, U.S. Navy warships sitting around this island blocking trade or humanitarian aid going into Cuba,” Waltz said. “It’s fake. It’s false. It’s a lie. Period.”

Waltz argued that the real embargo was the one Cuba’s government imposed on its own citizens.

“There’s a lot of talk today of an embargo. And indeed there is one,” he said. “It’s the embargo the Cuban regime mercilessly imposes on its own people decade after decade after decade.”

He called on Havana to “change your ways” and “turn the lights back on for your people,” while accusing Cuba’s leaders of ensuring that government compounds and propaganda operations had power even as families worried about spoiled food, hospitals losing electricity and phones running out of charge.

Waltz noted that Tuesday’s meeting came days before the fifth anniversary of the July 11, 2021, demonstrations, when thousands of Cubans took to the streets amid shortages of food, medicine and electricity and demanded greater freedom.

As Waltz spoke, a member of the Cuban delegation pounded on the table, prompting the ambassador to respond.

“This is not Havana. This is the United States of America. This is the United Nations,” Waltz said. “And we will speak, we will be heard, and we will not be silenced like your own people. So, pound away.”

Waltz displayed photographs and read the names of several jailed Cuban artists, musicians and activists, including Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Maykel Castillo Pérez and Duannis Dabel León Taboada.

“They’re not armed. They’re not violent,” Waltz said. “They carry flowers, and write poems and write music. And for that, the regime beats them, detains them and tries to break them.”

Waltz also said GAESA, Cuba’s military-run conglomerate, controls approximately half of the country’s economy and holds $18 billion in assets.

Reuters has reported that estimates of GAESA’s economic reach range from approximately 40% to 70%, while Cuban officials dispute the U.S. government’s $18 billion figure.

Waltz said that despite Cuba’s blockade claims, humanitarian assistance had recently arrived from countries including China, Russia, Mexico, Canada and Spain, as well as from the European Union and the United Nations.

He also said the United States had provided more than $100 million in aid this year and approximately $500 million annually in commodities.

“The answer is simple: because blaming the United States is the only economic plan Havana has left,” Waltz said of Cuba’s decision to bring the issue before the General Assembly.

Protesters gather outside a Communist Party headquarters in Morón, Cuba, as a fire burns in the street during overnight unrest. Video obtained by Fox News Digital appeared to show demonstrators attempting to set fire to the building amid protests linked to widespread blackouts.(Reuters)

Before the wider debate, U.S. Representative for U.N. Management and Reform Jeffrey Bartos objected to reopening the agenda item and called for a vote on whether the proceedings should go forward.

Bartos said the three-hour meeting would cost approximately $84,000, money he argued could instead provide food, emergency medical supplies and solar lanterns to Cuban families.

“Right now, Cuba is in darkness — again,” Bartos said. “I urge the Cuban regime: turn the lights back on for your people.”

Members of the Cuban delegation also interrupted Bartos several times by pounding on the table. Bartos at one point paused and responded, “Keep banging away. It’s very effective,” before continuing his remarks.

Bartos accused Havana of seeking “another propaganda clip” rather than solutions and pointed to what he said were more than 800 political prisoners held by the government.

Independent organizations have produced varying estimates. Human Rights Watch said in April that more than 700 people remained imprisoned for political reasons, while Prisoners Defenders reported more than 1,200 political prisoners in Cuba in the spring of 2026. Cuba denies holding anyone for political reasons.

“That is the real Cuban embargo,” Bartos said. “It is the embargo the regime imposes on its own people: on speech, on faith, on enterprise, on dissent, on political rights and hope — and now, quite literally, on light.”

Rodríguez accused the U.S. delegation of offering “worn-out lies” and attempting to prevent the General Assembly from debating the effects of American policy.

Cuba’s electricity crisis has been driven by severe fuel shortages and an aging, poorly maintained power system that has struggled to meet demand. The Cuban government primarily blames U.S. restrictions, while Washington attributes the island’s broader economic crisis to communist economic policies, corruption and repression.

Fetterman tells those who backed Platner to “sit it out” on a possible replacement

    July 7, 2026 / 6:27 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington— Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania said members of the party who helped prop up Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner amid a string of scandals should not play a role in selecting his potential replacement if he drops out of the race.

“Many of these people that put someone like Platner in this seat right now, sit it out,” Fetterman said in an interview with “The Takeout with Major Garrett” on Tuesday.

Fetterman condemned his colleagues in Congress and others who continued backing Platner after problematic internet comments he made years ago came to light, his admission that he once had a tattoo widely associated with a Nazi emblem, and allegations of sexually explicit texts andconcerning behavior toward women.

A Maine woman he previously dated, Jenny Racicot, told Politico and CNNthat Platner sexually assaulted her in 2021 — which Platner denied — leading the candidate to lose the support of top Democrats. Among those who called for Platner to drop out was Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent, who said in a statement Tuesday that he spoke with Platner about “about the best path forward for Maine” and “recommended that he step aside.”

“How have we arrived here?” Fetterman said. “That I think is an important thing to explore and the people that really made that possible … hold them accountable too.”

Fetterman specifically called out Sanders, saying he put Platner on the map “more than anyone.”

In an interview with Fox News on Monday, Fetterman called on Sanders “to apologize to the victims.”

Democrat New York Gov. Kathy Hochul suggested Rep. Elise Stefanik would have been a tougher Republican opponent than GOP gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman this fall, prompting the Nassau County executive to fire back by comparing the incumbent to Disney villain Cruella de Vil while blasting her record.

Hochul made the remarks during an interview with Newsday’s editorial board after she was asked whether Stefanik, who publicly considered running for governor before declining, would have been a stronger general election opponent than Blakeman.

“Probably. I mean, Bruce is, you know, Bruce,” Hochul said.

The governor said Stefanik’s national profile would have changed the dynamics of the race.

“She had the ability to raise a lot of money” because of her national following, Hochul said.

“It would have been a different race.”

Hochul added that she still believes she would have defeated Stefanik.

“Our polling shows us beating her as well,” she said.

Blakeman, however, accused Hochul of trying to distract from her record.

“Cruella de Vil is more likable than Kathy Hochul and her high taxes, high electric bills and soaring health care costs,” Blakeman said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital reached out to Stefanik for comment. This story will be updated with any response.

Before exiting the race, Fox News Digital reported exclusively that Stefanik had consolidated support from Republican county chairs and party leaders across New York, making her the early front-runner for the GOP nomination.

“Elise Stefanik, a fantastic person and Congresswoman from New York State, has just announced she won’t be running for Governor,” Trump wrote on Truth Social last December. “Elise is a tremendous talent, regardless of what she does. She will have GREAT success, and I am with her all the way!”

Trump ultimately endorsed Blakeman after Stefanik opted against entering the race, helping cement the Nassau County executive as the Republican nominee in an election cycle that has put the president’s influence in party primaries on full display.

Hochul is seeking a second full four-year term after first taking office in 2021 following former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s resignation.

She defeated Republican Lee Zeldin by roughly six percentage points in 2022 despite Republicans posting one of their strongest gubernatorial performances in deep blue New York in years.

The next campaign finance filings are due later this month, though Hochul has maintained a significant fundraising advantage over Blakeman. Republicans are hoping public matching funds and outside spending will help narrow the gap as the race ramps up.

    2026-07-07T20:10:38.900Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/07/politics/graham-platner-replacement-maine-senate-race

Maine Democrats scramble for plan to replace embattled Platner if he ends Senate campaign

    2026-07-07T20:10:38.900Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/07/politics/graham-platner-replacement-maine-senate-race

Maine Democrats are rushing to come up with a plan to quickly replace Graham Platner, their embattled Senate nominee, if he ends his campaign in the wake of a rape allegation that has left him hemorrhaging support from longtime allies.

Platner has denied the allegation, made by a woman he previously dated, and has not said whether he plans to leave the race. After CNN and Politico reported the assault allegation Monday, Platner said he would “reflect on the best path forward” for his Senate bid.

But amid mounting calls for him to quit, including from notable progressive backers such as Sen. Bernie Sanders, several Maine Democrats have said they are weighing running if he exits the race. A source familiar with the matter said the Maine Democratic Party, which called for Platner to drop out, is working through what a potential nominee replacement process would look like.

The next few weeks will be critical for Democrats as they try to rescue their effort to win the seat and flip control of the Senate. Maine is the only state former Vice President Kamala Harris won in her 2024 presidential campaign that now has a Republican senator up for reelection. But incumbent Sen. Susan Collins has shown an ability to defy the political odds, and has previously defeated several Democrats who weren’t weighed down by controversies.

Maine Democratic Party officials are aiming to have “an open, transparent process,” and ideas floated include a mini convention or caucus, the source familiar with the matter said.

If Platner withdraws from the race before 5 p.m. ET Monday, the Maine party would have until July 27 to submit a replacement name to the secretary of state.

State law doesn’t specify how parties must choose their candidate, but the party would be under considerable pressure to give voters a voice, avoiding the political fallout surrounding Harris’ presidential bid after she replaced then-President Joe Biden as the nominee in 2024. Already, Platner’s former allies on the left are stressing that any replacement should echo the current nominee’s progressive, anti-establishment politics.

A number of Democrats who have previously run for higher office in the state are considering seeking the Senate nomination if it becomes available, sources told CNN. Former gubernatorial candidates Troy Jackson, a past state Senate president, and Shenna Bellows, Maine’s secretary of state, are both considering running, according to sources familiar with their thinking. Jackson filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to create an exploratory campaign Tuesday.

Rep. Jared Golden, who announced last year he wouldn’t seek reelection to Maine’s competitive 2nd Congressional District, has received “many, many calls urging him to run,” but hasn’t said anything about what he’s thinking, a source close to the congressman told CNN.

Dan Kleban, the founder of Maine Beer Company who briefly sought the Senate nomination, is also “seriously weighing” a campaign, a source close to him told CNN.

“Violence and abuse have no place in our politics or our society, and for the sake of our state, he needs to step aside immediately,” Kleban wrote in a column on Substack, where he renewed a previous campaign blueprint. “Mainers deserve leaders who will fight for them against the DC establishment while also doing what’s right.”

Nirav Shah, a former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention who also sought the governor nomination, said he is evaluating whether he should seek the Senate nomination. He stressed that Maine voters should hear directly from the candidates and said that anyone running for the nomination should commit to at least one televised debate and hold multiple town halls.

“I am committed to doing that, if I run,” he wrote. “Defeating Collins means showing up everywhere and speaking with everyone.”

State Sen. Joe Baldacci, who came in second place in the Democratic primary for the 2nd Congressional District, told CNN he isn’t jumping into the race but is “going to see how things shake out.”

He noted that while some potential candidates are putting their names out there, Platner hasn’t dropped out. “I know people feel that it’s imminent, but I don’t think that it’s definite,” Baldacci said.

Another potential contender is two-term Gov. Janet Mills, though it’s unclear after her initial lackluster Senate bid how much support she could generate. Mills lost the nomination to Platner last month after suspending her campaign in April. CNN has reached out to Mills’ team.

Platner’s campaign has faced scrutiny over several moments from his past, including over a now-covered tattoo with Nazi origins, controversial since-deleted posts, and allegations of unsettling behavior toward women.

Jenny Racicot told CNN on Monday that Platner entered her home without permission and raped her while he was heavily intoxicated nearly five years ago when they were in a casual dating relationship. Platner denies the allegation.

After CNN and Politico reported on the allegation, several prominent Platner allies called for him to leave the race, including Sanders, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ruben Gallego, and state and national grassroots groups.

Platner’s campaign hasn’t detailed his next steps, but a person close to the campaign said they think the candidate “knows it’s over” but he wants to “use the movement he created” to influence who will replace him.

It’s not clear what process the Maine Democratic Party would use to select a new nominee if Platner exits the race. The party’s executive director, Devon Murphy-Anderson, said in a Monday statement that the process would be “inclusive,” though she didn’t provide details.

“The Maine Democratic Party hopes that we have broad participation of Mainers and Democratic voters in what happens next,” Murphy-Anderson said.

A convention or caucuses in a small nominating window could benefit candidates who already have strong support bases they can quickly mobilize, said Toby McGrath, a longtime Maine Democratic strategist.

Jackson, who was also endorsed by Sanders and campaigned alongside Platner, has support among labor groups, McGrath said. Bellows, like Platner, was endorsed by the Maine People’s Alliance, a progressive grassroots group.

“It really comes down to who has the best organization, and those two folks — Shenna Bellows and Troy Jackson — just ran and they actually have a grassroots following,” McGrath said. “And if you can bring more people to a caucus, that’s how you win.”

But other potential candidates could benefit from their distance from the current nominee. The source close to Kleban noted he never endorsed Platner.

“Dan has never talked to Graham in his life,” the source said. “I think other candidates will be tarnished by their close connection to Graham.”

There’s also a question of what influence Platner would have in the process to choose a new nominee. Platner would not be able to pick his replacement if he exits the race, and his endorsement would almost certainly be unwelcome by candidates. But he could play a role in uniting the party behind a new candidate.

“If, as Graham said, he’s creating a movement, I think his responsibility and his duty to that movement is to talk to those people and convince them to do what’s right for that movement, which would be getting behind the Democratic nominee,” McGrath said.

CNN’s Jeff Zeleny contributed to this report.
