Judge orders release of more than $5 million due to E. Jean Carroll in Trump sex abuse, defamation case

    July 8, 2026 / 2:02 PM EDT / CBS News

Despite last-minute protests from lawyers for President Trump, a federal judge has ordered the court to release $5 million, plus interest, won by the writer E. Jean Carroll when a 2023 civil jury found Mr. Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation.

The money had been held in a court-controlled bank account for three years, and Mr. Trump said in recent filings he wanted it to remain there.

It is unclear when exactly the funds will be transferred. Mr. Trump’s lawyers immediately filed a notice of appeal, contesting the judge’s order.

Carroll and her lawyers have been seeking the money in the days since the Supreme Court declined on June 29 to hear Mr. Trump’s appeal of the case, at the time seemingly putting the matter to rest. But Mr. Trump has asked the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision, and in a filing Tuesday night, argued that the lower court federal judge who presided over the case should delay disbursing the money Carroll won until the Supreme Court again weighs in.

Carroll, for her part, has sought and been granted by the judge a faster-than-normal schedule to receive the $5 million in damages awarded to her by the jury, plus hundreds of thousands in interest compiled since the case was decided in 2023.

Her lawyer Roberta Kaplan has called Mr. Trump’s latest Supreme Court effort “gamesmanship,” while accusing the president of trying “to buy time so he can try to concoct some new basis to put off paying” Carroll.

Mr. Trump vowed to fight paying Carroll soon after the unanimous federal jury concluded, in under three hours, that he more likely than not sexually abused Carroll by forcibly inserting his fingers into her during a 1990s encounter in a department store. Mr. Trump has emphatically denied her allegations since they were first raised in 2019.

His denials, which include claiming to have not known Carroll, saying Carroll is “not my type,” and calling her story a “hoax” and a “con,” are crucial to her defamation allegations.

In 2024, Carroll won a separate defamation trial against Mr. Trump, a case that also revolved around his repeated denials of having abused her. In that case, the jury awarded Carroll more than $83 million.

Mr. Trump has also asked the Supreme Court to weigh in on that case, and this week said in asking it to reconsider the decision on the $5 million 2023 trial, that he believes constitutional claims in the second matter will overlap with the first.

The arguments that the Supreme Court declined to hear in the $5 million matter revolved around whether the trial judge allowed inadmissible evidence. In the $83 million case, Mr. Trump is arguing that presidential immunity should have prevented the jury from being shown certain defamatory statements made during Mr. Trump’s first term in office.

The Supreme Court has not weighed in on Mr. Trump’s latest effort.

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6399939064112

FIRST ON FOX: Pressure mounts on YMCA to ditch transgender policies after Supreme Court Title IX ruling

Linda McMahon is not done with the transgender athlete debate: Kayleigh McEnany

Kayleigh McEnany lambastes California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office for its response to the Supreme Court ruling on transgender athletes. McEnany asserts Newsom’s stance is a political move for the 2028 presidential nomination, ignoring the “issue of fairness” he once acknowledged. She highlights how the “tide is turning” with 27 states, the NCAA, and the Olympics addressing bans on trans athletes in female sports.

FIRST ON FOX: The YMCA is facing renewed pressure to change its policies on transgender access to sex-segregated locker rooms, sports teams and overnight accommodations after the American Parents Coalition (APC) argued the organization’s rules conflict with the Supreme Court’s recent Title IX rulings.

The coalition argued the nonprofit, which operates about 2,600 locations nationwide and receives more than $600 million annually in government funding, should update its policies to align with the Supreme Court’s interpretation of Title IX because it accepts taxpayer funding.

In a letter sent this week to YMCA President and CEO Suzanne McCormick and the organization’s board of directors, APC urged the organization to revise its policies governing sports, bathrooms, locker rooms and overnight accommodations following the Supreme Court’s June 30 decisions in West Virginia v. B.P.J. and Little v. Hecox. In a decision that was unanimous on the Title IX question and split 6-3 on constitutional grounds, the Supreme Court ruled that states can limit women’s and girls’ sports to biological females and that Title IX’s use of the word ‘sex’ refers to biological sex.

CONSERVATIVES HAIL JUSTICE THOMAS FOR ‘TRUTH BOMB’ ABOUT RULING PROTECTING WOMEN’S SPORTS

Protesters rally against Christynne Wood, a transgender woman who was criticized for using the female locker room at the YMCA, in Santee, a suburban city in San Diego County California, January 21, 2023.

“The Supreme Court has drawn an unmistakable line by reaffirming that Title IX’s protections are rooted in biological sex,” American Parents Coalition Executive Director Alleigh Marré said in a statement. “The YMCA has ignored parents’ concerns for far too long while maintaining policies that undermine the privacy, safety, and fairness Title IX was enacted to protect. The Court’s decisions should serve as a wake-up call for every federally funded institution.”

The coalition is calling on YMCA leadership to rescind policies allowing biological males to participate in female sports or access female-only bathrooms, locker rooms and overnight accommodations, publish updated policies recognizing sex-based protections for women and girls, and publicly affirm the organization’s commitment to complying with Title IX.

“The Supreme Court has now made clear that biological sex is the legally operative distinction under Title IX,” the letter states. “The YMCA faces a choice. It can restore policies that protect women and girls, rebuild parents’ trust, and align its practices with the law as interpreted by the highest court in the land.”

BIDEN OFFICIALS CIRCUMVENTED COURT ORDER IN TITLE IX CASES, INCLUDING MALES IN GIRLS’ SPORTS, DOCS SHOW

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6399939064112

The letter marks the latest step in APC’s yearlong campaign targeting the YMCA’s transgender inclusion policies. Last year, the organization filed Title IX complaints with the Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Housing and Urban Development, alleging the YMCA’s policies violated federal civil rights law. It also asked Congress to investigate the YMCA’s use of federal funding.

APC argues that although the Supreme Court’s recent rulings focused on women’s sports, the Court’s reasoning extends to other sex-separated spaces. The group contends YMCA policies allowing individuals to use bathrooms, locker rooms, overnight accommodations and participate on sports teams according to their gender identity are inconsistent with the Court’s interpretation of Title IX.

The coalition also alleges the YMCA removed or revised webpages describing some of its gender identity policies after they received public scrutiny while leaving the underlying policies unchanged. APC further claims some YMCA camps continue allowing counselors to stay in cabins that correspond with their gender identity rather than their biological sex.

TRUMP CABINET MEMBER SCRAPS OBAMA-ERA GENDER IDENTITY HOUSING RULE, CITES ‘BIOLOGICAL REALITY’

A Fox News Digital review found several local YMCA associations, including the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, Lakeland Hills YMCA in New Jersey and the Gateway Region YMCA, maintain policies allowing members to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity.

The renewed criticism comes a month after controversy at a San Francisco YMCA drew national attention. After months of complaints from some members regarding a transgender woman using the women’s locker room at the Stonestown branch, the facility adopted updated locker room guidelines emphasizing that nudity should be “discreet, limited, and brief” while instructing members to respect others’ privacy and personal space. The revised rules addressed conduct inside the locker room but did not change the YMCA’s policy allowing transgender members to access facilities consistent with their gender identity.

The Maine Democratic Party issued a stern warning to U.S. Senate primary winner Graham Platner, telling him and his campaign that they have “no role” in choosing his replacement.

Platner has not yet withdrawn from the race, and is still the state’s Democrat nominee for U.S. Senate, despite mounting pressure from state and national Democrats to drop out after a woman who previously dated him accused him of sexual assault in a Politico report published Monday. Platner has denied the allegations, but said he is looking at “the best path forward,” as he understood the political fallout the accusation would create.

“The Maine Democratic Party has been working around the clock to develop a process to replace our U.S. Senate nominee that is open, inclusive, transparent, and fair,” state party Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson said in a video posted to X amid myriad newly surfaced allegations levied against Platner with less than a week before the deadline to lock in the candidate to challenge incumbent Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

“The integrity of this process is just as important as the outcome, and we are committed to ensuring that Democrats across our state can have confidence in both,” Murphy-Anderson continued. “Unfortunately, Graham Platner’s team has repeatedly reached out to us in an attempt to put their thumb on the scale of what this process looks like. We have repeatedly reiterated to Graham Platner’s team that they have no role in determining our next Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate, nor in determining what this process looks like.”

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IF PLATNER DROPS OUT? HERE’S WHO COULD REPLACE HIM ON THE BALLOT AND HOW IT WOULD WORK

Graham Platner won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, celebrating his victory at the YMCA in Blue Hill, Maine, on June 9, and just one month later, the state Democratic Party is forcing him out and having no say in who the nominee will be.(Matt Symons for Fox News Digital)

Amid the fight with the Maine party leaders, an official for the Platner campaign said it “has reached out to the party to try and understand what this process would look like” and “at no point has the campaign tried to ‘put its finger on the scale.’”

The official added that thousands of Maine residents voted and volunteered for Platner, and they should play a role in the decision.

“While Graham wouldn’t want to be a part of the process, he would want to make sure the voters and volunteers make this decision — not the political establishment,” the statement said.

Fox News Digital has made multiple attempts to reach out to Platner’s campaign for further comment, and also reached out to the Maine Democratic Party.

EXPLOSIVE SEXUAL ASSAULT ALLEGATION ROCKS PLATNER CAMPAIGN AHEAD OF KEY DEADLINE IN CRUCIAL SENATE RACE

Graham Platner has thus far been defiant and refusing to drop out without conditions, saying the Maine voters have picked him to be their nominee, “not the party establishment.”(Matt Symons for Fox News Digital)

Maine Democratic Party leaders called on Platner to withdraw Monday, saying “multiple women have made serious, credible allegations against Graham Platner” and that the party “stands with women and survivors.” The party noted that no replacement process can begin unless Platner suspends his campaign, while stating that “in no scenario is there a legal possibility for a nominee to be selected by an individual campaign.”

“The sooner this process can begin, the more time we will have to administer an intentional and inclusive process for Mainers and Democrats,” the party said.

“We are entrusted with deciding who represents our values and who carries our banner,” the party said. “That responsibility requires judgment, leadership, and a willingness to act when circumstances demand it.”

The timing is critical. According to the Maine Democratic Party, the deadline set by the secretary of state for a nominee to withdraw is July 13, and the deadline for a new nominee to be submitted is July 27. If Platner does not withdraw by the July 13 deadline, Democrats would not have the option to name a replacement.

    image

Doctor with “lust for murder” convicted in deaths of 15 patients in Germany, sentenced to life in prison

    July 8, 2026 / 9:06 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

A German palliative care doctor accused of killing 15 patients and described by prosecutors as having “a lust for murder” was convicted Wednesday and sentenced to life in prison.

The 41-year-old Berlin doctor, identified only as Johannes M., allegedly killed 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024 using deadly cocktails of sedatives.

On at least five occasions, he allegedly set fire to the victims’ apartments to cover up the killings.

Presiding judge Sylvia Busch said the conviction for 15 murders may well be only a glimpse of his many crimes.

Prosecutors said during the proceedings that he was suspected of having killed more than 70 other people.

The doctor allegedly “administered an anesthetic and a muscle relaxant to his patients without their knowledge or consent,” the Berlin prosecutor’s office said in a statement. “The latter paralyzed the respiratory muscles, leading to respiratory arrest and death within minutes.”

Prosecutors previously demanded a life sentence, additional steps to make early release less likely and a lifetime ban from practicing medicine.

On Monday Johannes M. confessed that he had “killed people” and told the court that “I despair at myself.”

He said he only now understood “the extent of the suffering” he had caused, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily reported.

Prosecutors and police previously saidthat the accused is said to have had no motive beyond killing, and that the suspect’s acts meet the legal definition of “lust for murder.”

The victims, who were all receiving care at the time, were aged between 25 and 94 years old.

    “Why do people kill?”

On one occasion, the suspect is accused of having killed two patients on the same day.

On the morning of July 8, 2024, he is alleged to have killed a 75-year-old man at his home in the central Berlin district of Kreuzberg.

A few hours later he allegedly struck again, killing a 76-year-old woman in the neighboring Neukoelln district.

The suspect’s alleged attempt to incinerate the crime scene failed when the fire did not catch, prosecutors said.

Suspicions over Johannes M.’s activities were initially raised by care services, leading to a police investigation. He was remanded in custody in August 2024.

Investigators looked into four cases, but the number of suspicious deaths continued to grow, with further cases still being looked into.

“The accused appears to have had no motive for killing the people other than the act of killing itself,” prosecutors said last year.

According to German media, Johannes M. wrote his doctoral thesis on homicides and started the paper with the words, “Why do people kill?”

The case recalls that of the German nurse Niels Hoegel, who was jailed for life in 2019 for murdering 85 patients. Hoegel, believed to be modern Germany’smost prolific serial killer, murdered hospital patients with lethal injections between 2000 and 2005, before he was eventually caught in the act.

In another case, a palliative care nurse was sentenced to life in jail in November for the murder of 10 patients and attempted murder of 27 others with lethal injections.

Last year, German police revealed they were investigating another doctor suspected of killing several mainly elderly patients.

    • “She be working”(她一直在工作)

Leftist California group pushes to add ‘Black English’ to schools’ multilingual education program

    July 8, 2026 11:24am EDT / Fox News

BlackECE’s 10-point framework calls for reparations amid its push to expand multilingual program to include Black dialect

    By Peter D’Abrosca Fox News

A group of radical left-wing groups in California are pushing for schools to add Black vernacular into a Golden State program that pushes multilingualism for kids.

Black Californians United for Early Care and Education (BlackECE) is a “collaborative partnership of organizations committed to advancing language justice for Black children in early childhood education.” Those groups include Californians Together, Catalyst California and Early Edge.

A co-founder of the umbrella group said she was teased a kid for “talking white” and doesn’t want Black children, like her son, to feel “shame” for the way they speak.

CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL BATTLES NEWSOM’S STATE LAW ORDERING IT TO CHANGE ‘INDIANS’ MASCOT

“The workgroup brings together BlackECE, Californians Together, Catalyst California, and Early Edge to challenge harmful language hierarchies and affirm Black English as a legitimate, rule-governed language rooted in Black history, culture, and community,” according to the coalition’s website.

BlackECE’s 10-point policy framework also includes reparations.

Ashley Williams, a co-founder of the BlackECE, spoke with PBS about the importance of the group’s work.

“I don’t want my son to walk into any room and feel like his voice is not valued or his perspective can’t be heard because he’s not saying it in one way or the other,” she told the outlet. “But with that comes a lot of shame and embarrassment because you’re being constantly corrected when you’re still in a moment when you’re just learning language.”

“Black English” is a broad term used to describe the way African Americans speak, according to ScienceDirect.

The most common defined form of “Black English” is African American Vernacular English [AAVE], characterized as a “systematic dialect spoken by many African Americans, characterized by specific phonological, syntactical, and lexical features, including word-final consonant cluster simplification, invariant ‘be’ for habitual meaning, and multiple negation.”

BlackECE insists that the dialect is not slang or broken English, and provides some real life examples of AAVE.

“She be working,” is one example listed on the website.

“They happy” and “bes’ friend” are among others.

“We talk about multilinguals, but we don’t include Black children who may be African-American English speakers,” Xigrid Soto-Boykin, an early childhood language expert at Arizona State University, told PBS. “We completely miss this subgroup of children that could also benefit from their language backgrounds to be sustained, but also to be leveraged for their own learning.”

NEW YORK TIMES CALLS UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA’S ‘TEST-BLIND’ ADMISSIONS POLICY A ‘TERRIBLE’ MISTAKE

California — a state where more than half of children under the age of five live in homes where another language besides English is spoken — implemented a program called “Promoting Equitable Early Learning and Care For Dual Language Learners” in 2020.

The program “declares biliteracy as a state goal and strongly promotes multilingual proficiency for all children, beginning in early childhood.” It focuses on policies that “reflect a dramatic shift in public sentiment away from a focus on English only and to a focus that values bilingualism as an asset and a strength.”

BlackECE says “Black English” should be added to that California program.

Williams recalled being teased for “talking white” by family members, and complained that her teachers were “adamant about proper English,” which she said made her feel insecure.

“Really at the heart of this, it’s about affirming our identity and our culture and our humanity and not having to perform as something you’re not just to be accepted in a room,” she reportedly said.

“We know that with being deemed multilingual learners, there’s resources, there’s supports, there’s teacher training. And we’re saying, ‘Yes, and we belong in that conversation too.’

‘Squad’ member calls DHS ‘greatest threat to our safety’ after ICE-involved shooting

DHS says Lorenzo Salgado Araujo tried to run over a federal agent before being fatally shot

    By Adam Pack, Fox News

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

One leftist lawmaker is ramping up her attacks on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) after an immigration officer fatally shot an illegal alien during an enforcement operation in Houston on Tuesday.

Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., declared DHS the “greatest threat to our safety” in a social media post, arguing that Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who allegedly resisted arrest during an attempted traffic stop, was the agency’s latest victim.

DHS said Salgado Araujo was shot in self-defense after he allegedly attempted to run over a federal agent with his vehicle, prompting the officer to open fire.

“The greatest threat to our safety is DHS,” Ramirez, a Chicago-based lawmaker who has called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), wrote Tuesday. “CBP and ICE continue to violently attack our neighbors and trample the rights of our residents.”

ICE SAYS OFFICER SHOT AND KILLED ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT WHO TRIED TO RAM HIM WITH CAR IN HOUSTON

Democrats have recently taken a hard line against DHS — a sprawling agency that oversees everything from the Secret Service to the Coast Guard and TSA — over its immigration enforcement and border security functions.

Top Democrats refused to fund the department earlier this year following the Trump administration’s controversial Minneapolis immigration enforcement surge that led to the killing of two Americans by federal officers.

The party’s hardball tactics led to the longest partial government shutdown in history and later prompted Republicans to pass a second “big beautiful bill” that funded ICE and CBP for the rest of President Donald Trump’s term.

Ramirez did not mention DHS’ statement that Salgado Araujo allegedly evaded arrest while federal authorities attempted to pull him over or that he was not authorized to be in the country.

“From information we are receiving, he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer, resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense,” DHS wrote in a statement.

“The driver was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted,” the department continued. “The driver was transported to the hospital where he passed away from his injuries.”

ILLEGAL ALIEN ON THE RUN AFTER ALLEGEDLY RAMMING ICE VEHICLE IN PENNSYLVANIA, PROMPTING AGENT TO FIRE WEAPON

A spokesperson for Ramirez did not immediately respond to a request for comment on DHS’s account.

DHS said the department’s Office of Inspector General is probing the shooting. The FBI’s Houston Office launched a separate investigation into the “potential assault” of the ICE officer, according to DHS’ statement.

Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Texas, who represents the Magnolia Park neighborhood where Salgado Araujo was shot, issued a more measured statement.

“ICE has released an initial account, but the facts must be independently and thoroughly investigated, including the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force,” Garcia wrote on social media. “All available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation.”

Ramirez, who is associated with the far-left cohort known as the “Squad,” also called on the Republican-controlled House to pass her Melt ICE Act, which would effectively defund the agency while laying out a timeline to shutter all immigration detention facilities and releasing detained illegal aliens.

The legislation is sponsored by fellow “Squad” members, Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Summer Lee, D-Pa., Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. It has no clear path to passage amid widespread opposition from Republicans and likely from some Democrats.

Ramirez’s ICE abolition advocacy comes as she has not commented on a spate of illegal aliens with criminal backgrounds who were arrested in her home state of Illinois in June.

Federal agents recently arrested Venezuelan national Mercedes Moreno Occhipinti, who allegedly assisted in a 2024 mass shooting involving Tren de Aragua members at a house party in Chicago.

Last month, authorities also detained Noe Moreno-Salazar, an illegal alien from Mexico, in St. Charles, Ill. He was previously convicted of sexual abuse and aggravated unlawful use of a loaded weapon, among other offenses, according to DHS.

Ramirez also did not appear to comment on the March killing of 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman by a Venezuelan illegal alien in Chicago — an incident that sparked outrage over the perpetrator’s previous arrest.

Fox News Digital reached out to DHS for comment.

Nolan Wells’ family demands answers after missing teen found dead on Mississippi island

    2026-07-08 11:27:23 EDT / CBS/AP

The family of Nolan Wells, a teenager found dead on an island off Mississippi after he had been missing for days, is seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his death. They have retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump.

Wells, 18, was last seen on July 4 on Horn Island, where he had taken a boat trip with friends to celebrate the holiday, officials said. His body was discovered Monday off the coast of the island, following a search that involved multiple local, state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the National Park Service.

Dental records confirmed the body was Wells, Jackson County coroner Bruce Lynd told CBS News. An autopsy took place Tuesday, Lynd said, but the results were not immediately made public.

In a statement released Tuesday, Crump said the family is searching for answers about the events leading up to Wells’ death.

“Nolan Wells was a beloved son, teammate and friend who went out to celebrate the Fourth of July and never came home. His family deserves answers. They deserve the truth,” Crump said. “We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light, and we call on investigators to pursue this case with the urgency and transparency this family deserves.”

Crump was also recently retained by the family of a Mississippi 1-year-old who was killed when police fired into a moving car.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said Wells traveled to Horn Island by boat with his friends on Saturday but did not return to the mainland with them that afternoon. He was last seen on the island at 3 p.m., according to Crump’s office. His mother reported Wells missing later that night.

Ledbetter told The Associated Press that Wells’ friends were cooperating with the investigation.

“From the people we’ve talked to, it sounds like he chose to stay on the island with the assumption that he was going to ride back to the mainland with someone else,” he said.

Wells, who would have turned 19 next month, attended Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he played wide receiver on the football team.

In a social media post, his mother, Christine Wonsley, said the family is seeking videos and other documentation from the island.

“My heart is broken for our sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others,” she said. “Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son.”

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office also has asked members of the public to come forward if they saw Wells or had any interactions with him on or near Horn Island around the time of his disappearance. The office said investigators are looking for “original, unedited photos and videos taken on the northwest tip of Horn Island,” where Wells’ body was found, “particularly those depicting alleged altercations or containing images of, or believed to include Nolan Wells.”

They asked people who may have “observed or heard an argument, disturbance, or other unusual activity while on the island that day” to contact the office, too.

Ledbetter previously told CBS News that investigators were hoping to identify the original poster of a https://www.instagram.com/reel/Dadt2WrBZVL/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet in which arguing can be heard in the background.

Brian Trascher, the national vice president of the United Cajun Navy, a volunteer organization that assisted with the search for Wells, said he was flying a plane over Horn Island when Wells’ body was found.

“They were setting up a tactical operation center or command post on the beach,” he said. “Shortly after, I started getting texts from my guys on the ground that they recovered who they believed to be Nolan.”
