    By Brie Stimson |

Tulsi Gabbard denies wrongdoing over delayed whistleblower complaint referral to Congress members: ‘Baseless’

By Brie Stimson | Fox News
    Published February 7, 2026 7:57pm EST

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard denied any wrongdoing on Saturday as Democrats question why a whistleblower complaint filed against her last May took nearly a year before it was referred to Congress.

“[Virginia Democrat] Senator Mark Warner and his friends in the Propaganda Media have repeatedly lied to the American people that I or the ODNI ‘hid’ a whistleblower complaint in a safe for eight months,” Gabbard wrote in a lengthy X post on Saturday. “This is a blatant lie.”

She continued, “I am not now, nor have I ever been, in possession or control of the Whistleblower’s complaint, so I obviously could not have ‘hidden’ it in a safe. Biden-era IC Inspector General Tamara Johnson was in possession of and responsible for securing the complaint for months.”

The highly classified complaint by a U.S. intelligence official alleging wrongdoing on the part of Gabbard was filed eight months ago with the intelligence community’s watchdog office and was first reported on by the Wall Street Journal.

The complaint has been locked in a safe since its filing, according to the Journal, with one U.S. official telling the newspaper that the disclosure of its contents could cause “grave damage to national security.”

The whistleblower’s lawyer has accused Gabbard’s office of slow-walking the complaint, which her office has denied, calling it “baseless and politically motivated.”

Meanwhile, Democrats are also questioning why it took her office so long to hand the complaint over to Congress.

“The law is clear,” Warner, the senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Thursday, according to NPR, adding that the complaint was required to be sent to Congress within 21 days of its filing. “I think it was an effort to try to bury this whistleblower complaint.”

Neither the contents of the complaint nor the allegations against Gabbard have been revealed.

Gabbard wrote on Saturday that the first time she saw the complaint was “when I had to review it to provide guidance on how it should be securely shared with Congress.”

“As Vice Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Warner knows very well that whistleblower complaints that contain highly classified and compartmented intelligence—even if they contain baseless allegations like this one—must be secured in a safe, which the Biden-era Inspector General Tamara Johnson did and her successor, Inspector General Chris Fox, continued to do,” she continued. “After IC Inspector General Fox hand-delivered the complaint to the Gang of 8, the complaint was returned to a safe where it remains, consistent with any information of such sensitivity.”

She claimed that either “Warner knows these facts and is intentionally lying to the American people, or he doesn’t have a clue how these things work and is therefore not qualified to be in the U.S. Senate.”

Gabbard further wrote that “When a complaint is not found to be credible, there is no timeline under the law for the provision of security guidance. The ‘21 day’ requirement that Senator Warner alleges I did not comply with, only applies when a complaint is determined by the Inspector General to be both urgent AND apparently credible. That was NOT the case here.”

An inspector general representative said that it had determined some of the allegations in the complaint against Gabbard weren’t credible, while it hasn’t made a determination on others, according to the Journal.

Gabbard said she was made aware that she needed to provide security guidance on the complaint by IC Inspector General Chris Fox on Dec. 4, “which he detailed in his letter to Congress.”

Afterward, she said she “took immediate action to provide the security guidance to the Intelligence Community Inspector General, who then shared the complaint and referenced intelligence with relevant members of Congress last week.”

In closing her post, Gabbard once again accused Warner of spreading “lies and baseless accusations over the months for political gain,” which she said “undermines our national security and is a disservice to the American people and the Intelligence Community.”

Warner’s office told Fox News Digital Gabbard’s post was an “inaccurate attack that’s entirely on brand for someone who has already and repeatedly proven she’s unqualified to serve as DNI.”

Republicans on the House and Senate intelligence committees have backed up Gabbard, with Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., writing on X on Thursday: “I have reviewed this ‘whistleblower’ complaint and the inspector general handling of it. I agree with both inspectors general who have evaluated the matter: the complaint is not credible and the inspectors general and the DNI took the necessary steps to ensure the material has handled and transmitted appropriately in accordance with law.”

He addded, “To be frank, it seems like just another effort by the president’s critics in and out of government to undermine policies that they don’t like; it’s definitely not credible allegations of waste, fraud, or abuse.”

Gabbard’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Savannah Guthrie says “we will pay” in new plea for mother’s safe return

    February 7, 2026 / 8:44 PM EST / CBS News

In a new video released Saturday, “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie said she and her two siblings are willing to pay for the safe return of their mother, Nancy Guthrie, who authorities believe was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona, home last weekend.

“We received your message and we understand,” Guthrie said in a short video posted to her social media account. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us and we will pay.”

The latest video of Guthrie speaking and her siblings, Camron and Annie Guthrie, sitting by her side comes after local and federal authorities said Friday they’re aware of a new message regarding their mother’s disappearance. It’s unclear what kind of message it is.

A ransom note that investigators said they’re taking seriously included a deadline of 5 p.m. Thursday, said Heith Janke, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s field office in Phoenix. The note demanded payment in bitcoin, and if a transfer wasn’t made, then a second demand was for next Monday, Janke said.

Retired FBI supervisory agent and hostage negotiator Jason Pack said Guthrie’s video message on Saturday showed “extraordinary discipline under unimaginable grief and pressure.”

“In four days, they moved from an emotional plea, to a proof-of-life demand, to a public offer to pay,” Pack said, offering his analysis of Guthrie’s message for the possible abductor or abductors. “Every step was designed to keep the line of communication open and lower every possible barrier to Nancy’s safe return.”

Guthrie’s choice to use the word “celebrate” also stood out, Pack said.

“That’s the language of resolution, not confrontation,” Pack told CBS News. “In any negotiation, you want to offer the other party a way to see this ending positively and peacefully for them too. That’s exactly what the family is doing.”

On Saturday, meanwhile, detectives continued to conduct searches in the surrounding area of Nancy Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills of Tucson.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said investigators so far have not identified any suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles connected to the case. Two law enforcement sources told CBS News on Saturday that investigators are “developing good information” but that “nothing is imminent.”

The sources said Nancy Guthrie’s car was towed from the home, and that investigators were examining it for possible fingerprints and potential other clues. Investigators also removed a camera from the roof of the home.

The FBI has announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or the arrest and conviction of the people involved in her disappearance.

Anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance is urged to call the Pima County Sheriff’s tip line at 520-351-4900.

NEW YORK, Feb 7 (Reuters) – An 18-month-old girl detained for weeks by U.S. immigration authorities was returned to custody and denied medication after being hospitalized with a life-threatening respiratory illness, according to a lawsuit filed in Texas federal court.

The child, identified in the lawsuit as “Amalia,” was released by immigration authorities in President Donald Trump’s administration after her parents sued on Friday. The parents, who also had been detained, were released as well. The suit had sought the release of all three of them.

The family was detained during a check-in with immigration authorities on December 11 and held at a facility in Dilley, Texas, according to the lawsuit. Amalia was hospitalized from January 18 to 28, and returned to the Dilley facility in the midst of a measles outbreak, the lawsuit said.

“Baby Amalia should never have been detained. She nearly died at Dilley,” said Elora Mukherjee, an attorney for the family.

Mukherjee said hundreds of children and families detained at Dilley lack sufficient drinking water, healthy food, educational opportunities or proper medical care, and should be released.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.

NBC News first reported on the lawsuit.

Trump’s administration has been accused of heavy-handed and inhumane tactics as well as violating court orders while carrying out his mass deportation program.

A federal judge in Michigan criticized the administration in a January 31 ruling ordering the release of a 5-year-old boy – seen in a viral photo wearing a blue bunny hat outside his house as federal agents stood nearby – who was detained by immigration agents in Minnesota. The administration is now seeking to deport the boy.

Amalia’s parents, originally from Venezuela, have lived in the United States since 2024 with their daughter, who is a Mexican citizen, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit says all three intend to file asylum applications in the United States.

Amalia developed a fever on January 1 that reached as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius), started vomiting frequently and struggled to breathe, according to the lawsuit.

She was taken to the hospital on January 18 with extremely low oxygen saturation levels and diagnosed with COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus, viral bronchitis and pneumonia, according to the lawsuit. She was placed on supplemental oxygen.

Amalia was given a nebulizer and a respiratory medication upon her discharge from the hospital, but these were taken away by detention center staff upon her return, according to the lawsuit. The girl has lost 10% of her body weight and was given nutritional drinks to help her regain it, but these were also confiscated by authorities, according to the lawsuit.

The top lawyer for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minnesota has left the agency, the same week an [ICE attorney] was removed after telling a district judge that “this job sucks” and that the Trump administration is “overwhelmed” with immigration cases.

Chief Counsel Jim Stolley retired after 31 years of service, Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told CNN. McLaughlin said Stolley’s retirement was scheduled to occur but did not provide additional details.

Stolley said in an automatic email response, “I have retired from public service,” and directed inquiries to the duty attorney. CNN also reached out to Stolley by phone but has not heard back.

The New York Times was [first to report] on Stolley leaving his post.

Minnesota courts have been inundated with immigration cases since the Trump administration began surging immigration enforcement to the state in December.

Earlier this week, ICE attorney Julie Le, who was detailed to Minnesota to help handle the immigration operation, was [removed] from her post after telling a judge that the job “sucks” because of the crushing workload and the government’s apparent inability to comply with court orders.

In an extraordinarily candid exchange with a federal judge on Tuesday, Le, who had been asked to explain why the administration was not promptly complying with a slew of court orders stemming from immigration cases she’s handling, admitted that the government did not have enough lawyers on the ground to keep up and that trying to get errors fixed is like “pulling teeth.”

Le’s comments – before Stolley’s resignation – offered a candid look at the immigration operation in Minnesota, which the Trump administration announced Wednesday would be [reduced], including a withdrawal of 700 federal law enforcement personnel from the state “effective immediately.”

President Donald Trump similarly signaled less aggressive tactics in the immigration enforcement blitz, [telling NBC News] on the same day as the drawdown announcement, “Maybe we can use a little bit of a softer touch, but you still have to be tough.”

Last month, two US citizens were shot by federal law enforcement agents in Minnesota, sparking extensive protests. The Trump administration’s crackdown in Minnesota has also faced pushback from state and local officials, who [failed to convince a federal judge] in Minneapolis to temporarily block the operation.

Gabbard rejects claims she withheld whistleblower complaint from Congress

    • Complaint alleged political interference in intelligence dissemination
    • Gabbard is accused of hindering dissemination of the complaint

WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (Reuters) – U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Saturday disputed claims by lawmakers that she sought to block Congress from accessing a whistleblower complaint, saying she took “immediate action” once notified of the need to provide security guidance for its release.

A top-secret complaint filed with the intelligence community’s inspector general last May by an anonymous government official alleged that the U.S. spy chief’s office sought to prevent the routine dissemination of certain classified intelligence for political reasons.

Gabbard was appointed to her post by Republican President Donald Trump last year.

A November letter from Andrew Bakaj, the whistleblower’s lawyer, to Gabbard’s office, which was also shared with the House of Representatives and Senate intelligence committees, alleged that Gabbard had hindered the dissemination of the May complaint to lawmakers by failing to provide necessary security guidance on how to handle it.

Democrats such as Senator Mark Warner, the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, have said that Gabbard’s agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, was required under law to relay the May complaint to Congress within 21 days rather than waiting until February.

In a social media post on Saturday, Gabbard accused Democrats of spreading a “blatant lie.”

Successive inspectors general spanning the presidencies of Trump and his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden did not find the complaint to be credible, Gabbard wrote on X. The 21-day requirement “only applies when a complaint is determined by the Inspector General to be both urgent AND apparently credible,” Gabbard wrote.

Reuters could not verify the contents of the original complaint. The Guardian newspaper and the New York Times have reported that it was related to the handling of an intelligence intercept related to someone close to Trump.

Gabbard also wrote that she previously had not been informed by the inspector generals that the whistleblower had “chosen to send the complaint to Congress, which would require me to issue security instructions.” Gabbard wrote that once made aware of the need to provide security guidance to share the complaint with lawmakers on December 4, she took “immediate action” to do so.
