Alex Murdaugh murder convictions overturned by South Carolina Supreme Court, new trial ordered

    May 13, 2026 / 11:40 AM EDT / CBS News

    By Mark Osborne

The murder convictions and consecutive life sentences for Alex Murdaugh, a prominent South County attorney who was found guilty of killing his wife and son, were overturned on Wednesday by the state’s supreme court.

Murdaugh was convicted in March 2023 for killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, at the family’s estate in 2021.

He will be given a new trial.

Murdaugh also pleaded guilty to a series of financial crimes in September 2023 and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Lawyers for Murdaugh pushed for a new trial based on “improper” conduct by the county clerk, Becky Hill, who later wrote a book about her time working on the trial.

The Supreme Court, which ruled 5-0 in favor of Murdaugh’s appeal, said the jury’s “efforts were in vain because Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill placed her fingers on the scales of justice, thereby denying Murdaugh his right to a fair trial by an impartial jury.”

The defense claimed Hill tampered with the jury by advising it not to believe Murdaugh’s testimony, pressuring them to reach a quick guilty verdict, and misrepresenting information presented during the trial.

An appeals court rejected Murdaugh’s ask for a new trial in January 2024, but the Supreme Court reversed the decision on Wednesday.

“Our justice system provides—indeed demands—that every person is entitled to a fair trial, which includes an impartial jury untainted by external forces bent on influencing the jury toward a biased verdict,” the court wrote in its opinion. “Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury and remand for a new trial.”

One juror who testified during the appeals trial in 2024 said, that “when the jury began deliberations, Hill told the jury, ‘[T]his shouldn’t take us long,’” according to the court’s decision Wednesday.

The juror wrote, in her sworn affidavit for that appeals trial, “I had questions about Mr. Murdaugh’s guilt but voted guilty because I felt pressured by the other jurors,” according to court documents.

Another juror testified that Hill told them, on the day Murdaugh testified, it was “an epic day.” Though, that juror said it did not affect their eventual decision to find him guilty. A third juror testified Hill told him to “watch his body language” on the day Murdaugh testified, something he said also did not later influence his verdict.

Murdaugh had initially claimed he wasn’t at the family’s 48-acre hunting estate in Islandton, South Carolina, on the night his wife and his younger son, Paul, then-22 years old, were killed. However, during the trial, it emerged that Alex Murdaugh’s voice could be heard on a cellphone video recorded by Paul shortly before the killings at the property’s kennels on June 7, 2021.

He admitted during testimony he lied to police about being there and said he did so because his heavy use of drugs caused him to be paranoid and distrust investigators.

“I’m not quite sure how I let myself get where I got. I battled that addiction for so many years. I was spending so much money on pills,” Murdaugh said during the trial, though he adamantly rejected that he was involved in the murders.

The South Carolina Supreme Court also expressed dissatisfaction with the inclusion of extensive information about Murdaugh’s financial crimes in the double murder trial.

The court wrote, “we unanimously hold the trial court allowed the State to go far too long and far too deep into aspects of Murdaugh’s financial crimes that were not probative of the State’s theory of motive, which gave rise to considerable danger of unfair prejudice, and therefore should have been excluded.”

Senate Republicans balk at $1B White House ballroom request: ‘You made that number up’

    May 13, 2026 9:07am EDT / Fox News

Senate Republicans are having a hard time stomaching an eye-popping funding request that, in part, would fund security enhancements for President Donald Trump’s ballroom.

Republicans in the upper chamber still aren’t completely on board with a $1 billion request from the Trump administration and Secret Service tucked into their immigration operations funding package, and many are wondering how exactly that figure was created.

“It was one thing when private dollars were building it,” Sen. John Curtis, R-Utah, said. “If you’re asking me for a billion dollars, I have some really hard questions. If I were a businessman and an employee came and said, ‘I have a project, and it’s a billion dollars,’ I’d say, ‘You made that number up,’ right? Like, where did the number come from?”

ONCE TOUTED AS PRIVATELY FUNDED, REPUBLICANS SNEAK IN TAXPAYER CASH FOR TRUMP’S BALLROOM PROJECT

President Donald Trump holds a rendering of the planned White House Ballroom extension during a meeting in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Oct. 22, 2025, in Washington, D.C.(Aaron Schwartz/CNP/Bloomberg)

Curtis’ skepticism came as Republicans were headed for a closed-door briefing on the request from Secret Service Director Sean Curran, who provided a high-level breakdown of the funding in a one-pager obtained by Fox News Digital.

Curran’s explanation wasn’t enough for several Republicans, who left the meeting still wanting more detailed information on exactly how the funding, which is part of the broader reconciliation package meant for immigration enforcement, would be used.

“They need to go back and get us more details about exactly how they arrived at the figure,” Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., said afterward.

Curran presented lawmakers with a high-level breakdown of how the money would be spent, which included $220 million for “White House complex hardening.”

TRUMP ADMIN DEFENDS WHITE HOUSE BALLROOM AS NATIONAL SECURITY MATTER

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., speaks to reporters as he arrives at the U.S. Capitol for a vote on Jan. 6, 2026.(Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc. via Getty Images)

That category, like the legislation released by the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, dictated that the funding would fund “above and below ground” security enhancements for Trump’s ballroom, which the administration argued would “afford needed protection for the president, his family, and visitors, along with the below-ground, highest-level security functions.”

Those enhancements would include bulletproof glass, drone detection technology, chemical filtration and detection systems and “a host of other national security functions.”

An additional $180 million would go toward a White House screening center for visitors. The remaining $600 million would go toward Secret Service training, enhancing protection for Trump and other officials, and other security measures including countering drones and other aerial incursions.

“What was clear today is this whole statement, ‘It’s a billion dollars for a ballroom.’ Anyone who prints that is printing something they know is a lie. That’s not true,” Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., told Fox News Digital. “It’s not a billion dollars for the ballroom.”

The entirety of the funding won’t be going exclusively to enhancing security for Trump’s colossal ballroom, so Republicans want more answers on how each dollar will be used.

AFTER THIRD ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT, DEBATE GROWS OVER WHETHER TRUMP ATTACK WARRANTS ANOTHER INVESTIGATION

Sen. John Curtis, R-Utah, said he wants more answers on the Trump administration’s funding request.(Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

And they acknowledge that the price tag is a hard sell to make in the midst of growing economic issues across the country.

“The way I look at it, I look at it like a business guy,” Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., told Fox News Digital. “So it’s an investment, and it’s gonna, you know, you have to explain to the American public, if you’re gonna spend their money, how do you get a return?”

Scott, like several other Republicans, is in favor of boosting security for Trump, who faced a third assassination attempt last month, and future presidents.

And there is an opportunity to cut the request down, which some Republicans suggested could be an option as they sprint to finish work on the broader $72 billion package.

“We want to make sure we’re being responsible with taxpayer dollars and see what is the best vehicle for that, and then making sure that we’re judicious with that money,” Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., told Fox News Digital.

Meanwhile, the funding request is a small piece in a broader package meant to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol for the next three and a half years through the budget reconciliation process.

Whether the ballroom security and Secret Service funding actually stays in the package is an open question, given that the entire package will be reviewed under the Senate’s strict Byrd Rule guidelines that dictate what can and can’t make it into the reconciliation process.

And Democrats are planning to push hard against the security funding, arguing that the money would be better spent elsewhere on affordability issues.

“The bottom line is, this ballroom is a disgrace,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said. “The Republicans know it. Let’s see if they have the guts to do what they know is right, both substantively and politically, and tell Trump we don’t need a God — we don’t need a damn ballroom.”

Move is part of Vance task force on healthcare scams
Pause will give government time to scrutinize accounts
    Fraud crackdown began in Minnesota

May 13 (Reuters) – The Trump administration will block new home healthcare and hospice providers from enrolling in Medicare for at least the next six months, according to a government statement posted on Wednesday, citing concerns about widespread fraud.

The moratorium will temporarily bar new providers in those categories from signing up for reimbursement from Medicare, a U.S. government health insurance program for Americans aged 65 and older and those with disabilities. It will not impact providers already registered with Medicare, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which oversees the program.

It is the latest move by Vice President JD Vance’s anti-fraud task force that aims to crack down on healthcare scams.

The U.S. government has for years tried to tackle fraudulent payments from Medicare to hospice and home healthcare providers.

Scammers can bill Medicare for hospice or home healthcare services that the patient doesn’t need or want, allowing them to rake in millions of dollars from the U.S. government. The national fraud prevention group Senior Medicare Patrol has repeatedly issued alerts on the issue.

CMS has paused enrollments in the past in specific counties when staff suspected fraud, including in 2013, when it barred new providers based in Florida’s Miami-Dade County.

“This is about protecting patients, restoring integrity and safeguarding taxpayer dollars,” said CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz in a statement.

Reuters was first to report on the pause. The moratorium will give CMS time to account for hospice and home health expenditures under the Medicare program and create additional guidance, an administration official said.

The Trump administration has been criticized for mixing the president’s political preferences with agency efforts to eliminate fraud in government payments. The administration singled out some Democratic-led states, including California and Minnesota, as not doing enough to combat fraud. But it also ramped up oversight of hospices in Georgia and Ohio last year, both led by Republicans.

    DIFFERENT APPROACHES FROM INDUSTRY

In 2024, 1.8 million Medicare beneficiaries received hospice care at a cost of $28.3 billion, according to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. The same year, 2.7 million patients on Medicare received home healthcare at a cost of $16 billion, according to the agency which advises Congress on healthcare spending.

Vance’s task force has recently taken action against hospice services, particularly in California, where the state auditor said in 2022 that lax oversight had enabled large-scale fraud.

Industry groups had urged different approaches as the Trump administration weighed potential action.

The National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation said in March it supported temporarily pausing hospice provider enrollments. The National Alliance for Care at Home warned against overly broad action that could deter doctors and patients from recommending or seeking care.

Major home health operators in the U.S. include BrightSpring Health Services (BTSG.O), private equity-backed Matrix Medical Network, and UnitedHealth Group (UNH.N). Chemed Corporation (CHE.N) subsidiary VITAS Healthcare is among the top hospice care providers.

    BROADER CRACKDOWN

Tens of billions of dollars are estimated to be lost in the United States through healthcare fraud each year, translating into higher costs for patients and employers, according to the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has also sought to tackle other healthcare sectors it has deemed a fraud risk. The administration in February paused Medicare enrollments by suppliers of durable medical equipment, such as prostheses.

The fraud crackdown started in Minnesota, where the Trump administration said in February it would withhold $259 million in funds for Medicaid, the federal- and state-run program for lower-income Americans.

Trump has repeatedly invoked a scandal in Minnesota that dates back to 2020, in which 47 people were accused of defrauding $250 million from a state-run, federally funded child nutrition program. Many of the defendants in that case were Somali Americans, according to local news reports.

The controversy prompted Trump earlier this year to send in thousands of federal immigration officers as part of a migrant crackdown. He shifted tactics to a less aggressive approach after federal officers shot dead two people protesting his policies.

In announcing the fraud task force in March, Trump, without providing evidence, said fraud allegations were higher in Democratic-led states than in Republican-led states.
