    >

    “该法案涵盖儿童人工智能、网络 predators(网络 predators 通常译为“网络性侵害者”或“网络掠食者”)等多个方面,并将制定具有实际威慑力的新刑罚。

Navy veteran Rocky Rochford served his country for 33 years, holding the title of commodore. Now, he’s on a mission to flip Tampa Bay from blue to red, in the midst of a spirited campaign to unseat 20-year incumbent Kathy Castor in Florida’s 14th congressional district.

Rochford recently sat down to discuss his campaign with Fox News Digital.

“So in 20 years, Kathy Castor has been the author of two bills that became law. And both of those were to rename post offices. So I would say that Kathy Castor has been ineffective. She hasn’t really helped Tampa Bay in the ways that matter the most. Affordability is probably the biggest thing on everyone’s kitchen table list of discussion points. Gasoline, groceries, electricity, insurance. I mean, the list goes on and on and on.”

Rochford emphasizes that his leadership experience has prepared him to be ready to represent the people of Tampa Bay from day one.

RAYS AGREE TO $2.3B DEAL FOR NEW BALLPARK IN TAMPA

“So it’s about leadership. I have spent my entire adult life…33 years in the Navy, four years at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. I got to go back to the age of 18 for the first time before I was actually part of the military. So, it’s been entrenched in my being, it is in my soul, I’m very strong in my faith.

And I believe that we need someone who is not only going to bring leadership to the process, but is going to bring their faith to the process up in D.C., and be part of the solution. People who are anti the other side, whether it doesn’t matter what side you’re sitting on, when they are against the other side to the point where they won’t even talk to them, that’s problematic. We’re not gonna get anything accomplished, we’re not going to get anything done. And that’s exactly what’s happening up in DC right now, we see a lot of that.”

Children’s rights is an issue at the forefront of Rochford’s campaign.

“I have three major bills that are the highlight of what I’ve been working on. And the first is my children’s bill of rights. I do believe that children are the future, and they need to be protected far better than they’re being protected now. So the laws that govern children are written amongst 11 different government agencies. Those agencies don’t overlap and they don’t talk to each other. This bill is designed to create a shield, an organization that oversees all of those laws.

“This covers everything from AI for kids, online predators, and it provides new penalties with teeth. This is we’re going to get after those folks. The predators have been exploiting four different avenues on children across state lines. I’m going to close every one of those doors. Parental rights, no boys in girls sports. I mean, this bill covers adoption. It covers foster care, egg donor, IVF. It is complete.”

Rochford argues that foreign influence plays a large role in shaping electoral outcomes, and particularly singles out China-based political donor and activist Neville Roy Singham.

Neville Roy Singham smiles at his wedding to Jodie Evans in February 2017 in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.(Osbourne Chin / Chinphotographic)

“There’s a lot folks who have nothing to do with the United States…that are influencing our elections, they’re influencing the people…We know that Neville Singham, who’s a U.S. citizen living in Shanghai, is taking money from the CCP to disrupt America from the inside. China calls this the smokeless war, and it really is and and they’re not the only ones.

“Iran is doing the same thing, we know North Korea is involved, Russia so there’s a lot of influence happening in here that are that are causing wreaking havoc but we as a society need to see beyond that. We are one America, and I’m America first. I’m American first before politics, America first before party.”

LAWMAKERS RAISE ALARM OVER NEVILLE ROY SINGHAM’S $278M NETWORK SPREADING CCP PROPAGANDA IN THE U.S.

Florida’s 14th district is hardly politically monolithic, and Rochford emphasizes that he seeks to represent the entire district, not merely Republicans.

“I’m about listening. So I’m here to not only listen to the right, I’m here to listen to the center, and I’m here to listen the left. Because if we can’t come together and find the commonalities that will make us a better country, then we are doomed as a country. So we must support what we’re all after, which is a great America, a great society that takes care of its own and helps around the world.”

Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., takes her seat for the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party hearing in the Cannnon House Office Building on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

He views energy policy and independence as the foundation of affordability for American workers and families.

“So I’ve been talking about affordability for some time. To me, the foundation of affordability for just about everything runs off of energy. The price of oil drives the price of gas, which is in our trucks, in our trains, in our airplanes, in ships. And so we need to get control. And so one of the bills that I have drafted will propose that…we first have to become energy independent. We’re the largest producer of energy in the world. So our people should be benefiting from it, not hurting from it.”

Among the most important policy issues for Rochford is the national debt, which he has spent a great deal of time researching. He has a plan that would retire America’s national debt by the 2060s:

“We don’t want to leave a legacy of debt to our children and grandchildren. So I had go back 40 years to try to figure out where this all started, and where we went off the tracks. And I now understand the entire policy. Balancing the budget is only treating a symptom. It does not treat the disease. So the disease is Congress, I’m sorry, but it’s true.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP

“Every bit of money that comes in that’s extra from Congress goes into the general pool and they spend it. And all of the great ideas that have been used in the past, because I studied them all in the past on how to get after the national debt, balance the budget, the things that’ll help us get there. They were only policy, they were never law. So this suite of bills is law and it has teeth. And so the very first bill will design, it will create a trust and it is the American National Debt Trust. And when the money goes in there, it cannot come out and it cannot be spent by Congress in any other way. So if we enacted my legislation it would still take us to the 2060s to retire the national debt, but if we do nothing, and we’re on the path of doing nothing, in 10 years the national debt will be $61 trillion.”

Florida’s primary election is August 18.

1 firefighter dead, 10 other people injured in fire and explosion at Maine lumber mill

    May 15, 2026 / 7:50 PM EDT / CBS News

A large fire and explosion Friday at a lumber mill in Maine killed one firefighter and injured at least 10 other people, officials said. The blaze was still active as of late Friday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a fire in the silo of the Robbins Lumber mill at 10 a.m. in Searsmont, Maine, about 95 miles from Portland, Mike Sauschuck, commissioner of the state Department of Public Safety, said during a news conference.

“While firefighters were conducting fire suppression efforts, an explosion occurred. Multiple individuals sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals throughout the state,” Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a statement.

One firefighter was killed at the scene, Moss said. The firefighter will be transported to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy and identification. Several other firefighters are reported to be in serious and critical condition.

Sauschuck said Friday afternoon he could not provide the exact number of people injured, “or where they were working or who they were working for.”

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland, which has a Level 1 trauma designation, said it was anticipating 10 patients to its emergency department.

The Thorndike Fire Department said in a social media post that multiple firefighters and civilians were injured. The department also said multiple fire trucks were lost to fire.

Officials said they do not know the cause of the fire at this time.

Catherine Robbins-Halsted, an owner at Robbins Lumber, said Friday that all of the company’s employees were accounted for.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/explosion-maine-searsmont-lumber-mill-firefighters/

Robbins Lumber, a family-owned business, opened in 1881 and now manages 30,000 acres of its own forests, according to the company. In 1957, the mill “burned to the ground” after a fire, but was rebuilt and added a new sawmill.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins said in a social media post that “the Robbins family is beloved in the Searsmont community, and Robbins Lumber is a piece of Maine history.”

“I have known the family for many years,” Collins said in the post. “My heart goes out to them, their employees, and the first responders who have come from all over the region to help in the emergency response. This is a very sad crisis, and all those affected are in my prayers.”

Maine Gov. Janet Mills said in a social media post that she was briefed on the fire in Searsmont and urged civilians to stay clear of the area.

“I ask Maine people to join me in keeping all those affected in their thoughts,” she said.

    image

    image

    image

    image

SpaceX launched an unpiloted Dragon cargo ship Friday loaded with 6,500 pounds of supplies and equipment bound for the International Space Station, including nearly a ton of research gear, samples and other material for some 50 different science investigations.

Running three days late because of bad weather, the Dragon’s Falcon 9 booster roared to life at 6:05 p.m. ET, blasting off from pad 40 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and arcing away to the northeast in line with the station’s orbit.

Two and a half minutes after liftoff, the rocket’s first stage, making its sixth flight, fell away and flew itself back to an on-target touchdown on a landing pad near the launch gantry. The second stage continued the climb to orbit, releasing the Cargo Dragon to fly on its own nine minutes and 20 seconds after launch.

A camera on the Falcon 9 first stage shows the view looking down as it neared its Cape Canaveral landing pad, while a camera on the ground captured a dramatic view of the lander’s final descent. NASA/SpaceX

It was SpaceX’s 638th Falcon 9 launch since the rocket’s debut in 2010, the company’s 56th such flight so far this year and its 611th successful booster recovery.

The first stage completed its sixth flight with a picture-perfect touchdown at Landing Zone 40 near the rocket’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station launch pad. NASA/SpaceX

“This will be the first Cargo Dragon spacecraft to head to the station for a sixth time, so a great milestone there,” said Bill Spetch, ISS operations integration manager at the Johnson Space Center. “We’re sending over 6,000 pounds of hardware, supplies, science experiments and more to our Expedition 74 crew.

“This mission includes everything from water purification hardware to research that helps us better understand space weather,” Spetch said.

If all goes well, the Cargo Dragon will complete an automated rendezvous with the station early Sunday, moving in for docking at the front end of the forward Harmony module around 7 a.m.

Once hatches are opened, the spacecraft will be unloaded by Crew 12 commander Jessica Meir and her three crewmates, pilot Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot and cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev.

Also on board the station as part of the seven-member Expedition 74 crew: Soyuz MS-28/74S commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, fellow cosmonaut Sergey Mikaev and NASA astronaut Chris Williams.

The Cargo Dragon is delivering more than 3 tons of equipment and supplies, including 1,363 pounds of crew clothing, food and other essentials; more than 1,000 pounds of vehicle hardware, 282 pounds of spacewalk components, 186 pounds of computer gear and 1,834 pounds of research equipment and samples.

    NASA

“The ISS has enabled more than 4,000 different science experiments and technology demonstrations in its 25 years on orbit,” said Liz Warren, deputy chief scientist for the space station program. “And that represents the work of over 5,000 researchers from 110 countries around the world.

“The International Space Station is a truly global endeavor. It serves both as a proving ground for scientific breakthroughs and as a critical stepping stone to help enable the Artemis program, lunar exploration and future Mars missions,” Warren said.

The next major milestone for the space station program comes in July. Soyuz MS-29 commander Pyotr Dubrov, fellow cosmonaut Anna Kikina and NASA astronaut Anil Menon are scheduled to blast off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on July 14. They will replace Kud-Sverchkov and his two Soyuz MS-28 crewmates.

Launch of a Russian Progress cargo ship is expected in early September, followed by the launch of NASA’s Crew 13 — Jessica Watkins, Luke Delaney, Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk and cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov — aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule on Sept. 12. They will replace Crew 12.

Three more cargo flights are expected before the end of the year, with crew rotation flights resuming in early 2027.

WASHINGTON, May 15 (Reuters) – The White House and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are receiving daily briefings on the U.S. response to an Andes hantavirus outbreak that killed three people aboard a luxury cruise ship this month, ‌a top health official said on Friday.

No cases have been reported in the United States and the risk to the general public remains very low, said U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Acting Director Jay Bhattacharya.

Forty-one U.S. residents are being monitored for possible infection, 18 of whom were passengers on the ship and returned to the United States before the outbreak was identified. They are now quarantined in Nebraska and Atlanta.

Some public health scientists have criticized the initial U.S. response to the hantavirus outbreak as sluggish. Kennedy has also drawn criticism previously for his handling of a measles outbreak.

“The Secretary is getting daily detailed updates, as is the White House, and I’ve participated in several of those. I can tell you firsthand, they’re both following this outbreak very, very closely,” Bhattacharya, who is also director of the National Institutes of Health, told reporters on a media call.

The CDC issued guidance for identifying and ‌monitoring people with potential exposure, said Dr. David Fitter, the incident manager for the agency’s hantavirus response.

A person is considered high risk if they were on the ship between April 6, when the first person got sick, and May 10, when the last person disembarked, Fitter said.

Other high-risk contacts include those who reported close contact exposure to a person sick with hantavirus or their bodily fluids, or were seated in close proximity to a person sick with the virus during air travel, he said.

“I want to reinforce that Andes virus does not transmit easily,” he said, noting that it was spread through close, prolonged contact.

High-risk contacts should stay home and limit contact with others for six weeks, he said. They should also coordinate any essential travel with their state health department and be ready to self-isolate immediately if they start developing symptoms.

Cuba’s biggest threat to U.S. is collapse, says former Defense Secretary Robert Gates

    May 15, 2026 4:28 PM EDT / CBS News

As President Trump makes threats against Cuba, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the biggest risk the Communist-ruled island poses to the U.S. is its potential collapse and a migration crisis to the U.S.

“The biggest risk is that we end up with another Mariel evacuation from Cuba that has tens of thousands of Cubans heading to the United States out of desperation,” Gates said Friday in an interview with “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”

Known as the Mariel Boatlift, about 125,000 Cubans sought refuge in the U.S. in 1980, as Cuba’s failing economy led to dissent on the island. The mass exodus strained social services in Florida and led the state and federal governments to declare a state of emergency.

Gates said Cuba’s involvement in other events, such as providing security for ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, has “impacted” U.S. national security, but questioned whether Cuba poses an “imminent threat” to the U.S.

“Other than in these, if you will, peripheral ways, I think the main threat is, frankly, is collapse,” he said.

President Trump has threatened the possibility of military action against Cuba for months and Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for economic and political reforms.

The Trump administration has been trying to squeeze Cuba’s economy by imposing an oil blockade that experts say has pushed the nation to its most dire state since the collapse of the Soviet Union, which heavily subsidized Cuba’s economy. Cuba’s energy minister said this week that Cuba has run out of fuel, largely as a result of the blockade.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Havana on Thursday for a rare meeting with senior Cuban officials, an agency official told CBS News, delivering a message that the U.S. was prepared to expand economic and security engagement with Cuba if Havana “makes fundamental changes.”

May 15 (Reuters) – The Trump administration plans to unveil criminal charges against Cuba’s former president, Raul Castro, based on a 1996 incident in which Cuban military jets killed four people, according to a U.S. Justice Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Here are details about ‌the incident:

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

On February 24, 1996, Cuban jets shot down two small planes being flown by Brothers to the Rescue, a group of Cuban exile pilots. All four men aboard were killed. Cuba said the planes were in Cuban airspace, while the United States said they were over international waters. Cuba defended the shootdown as legitimate defense of its airspace but the U.S. position was later backed up by the International Civil Aviation Organization, which concluded the attack took place over international waters.

WHO WERE ‘BROTHERS TO THE RESCUE’?

The Miami-based group said its mission was to search the Florida Straits for Cuban rafters fleeing the island. The group routinely flew near the Cuban coast. In early 1996, Cuban officials accused the group of dropping tens of thousands of flyers over Havana. The group’s leader, Jose Basulto, said the leaflets were dropped over international airspace and carried by winds to Cuba. However, the group’s members had flown over Havana in recent months to drop literature.

    CUBA’S RESPONSE

Fidel Castro, who ‌was then Cuba’s president, said after the incident that he gave general orders to stop the flights but did not specifically order them to be shot down. Castro said the military acted on “standing orders” and that his brother Raul, who at the time oversaw the nation’s security services as defense minister, also did not give a specific order to shoot the planes.

A former Brothers to the Rescue member, Juan Pablo Roque, alleged on Cuban television that the pilots’ group had flown into Cuban airspace to gather information ahead of a possible attack and had planned to smuggle arms into the country. U.S. officials dismissed his claims as propaganda and said he was likely a Cuban agent.

    THE U.S. RESPONSE

President Bill Clinton ordered sanctions including suspending charter flights, restricting Cuban diplomats’ movement, and seeking cooperation with Congress on tightening the embargo. However, the Clinton administration did not pursue criminal charges against either Castro brother. The Justice Department filed charges against three Cuban military officers in 2003 but they were never extradited.
