7 more beluga whales arrive in Texas as international relocation effort continues

    August 5, 2026 / 8:11 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Jared Ochacher

SeaWorld San Antonio welcomed seven more beluga whales on Tuesday, the latest development in the international effort to relocate dozens of the mammals from a shuttered Canadian theme park.

The group of females – Xena, Gemini, Skyla, Meeka, Eve, Neva and Calypso – was the second to leave Marineland, and marked the largest beluga transfer ever completed in the United States.

“We are so happy that all went well and the second transport of this huge rescue effort is complete,” said Steve Aibel, SeaWorld San Antonio’s vice president of zoological operations.

The latest arrivals are acclimating to their new home in a private habitat away from public view, where caretakers are monitoring their health and behavior.

“They are receiving veterinary care, nutrition and attention as they acclimate to their new environment,” Aibel added.

Aibel was among the caretakers who joined the more than 1,200-pound animals on their journey from Marineland.

The trip required specialized, water-filled transport units and rides on flatbed trucks and a cargo plane.

The seven whales joined Frankie and Bertie Botts, who completed the same nearly 2,000-mile journey from Niagara Falls to San Antonio during the first relocation last month. Four other whales from that transport were brought to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

The two males are adjusting well, according to caretakers at SeaWorld, and are slowly being introduced to the existing whales at the park.

Marineland closed to the public in 2024 but has remained in possession of the animals, which it has said it lacks the resources to continue caring for. Around a year after closing, the park said it would have no choice but to euthanize them if a relocation plan or additional funding was not secured.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued relocation approvals in July to ensure the belugas receive medical treatment and care that is not otherwise available, saying that “there are no other facilities in Canada that are able to provide the whales husbandry or medical care.”

Seventeen whales remain at Marineland and are expected to be moved to aquariums in Georgia, Chicago, San Diego and Spain, though officials have not announced a timeline.

President Donald Trump blasted democratic socialist Abdul El-Sayed while warning that Democrats are skipping socialism and embracing communism during remarks Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nevada.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Donald Trump escalated his attacks on Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed Wednesday, singling out the progressive candidate as “full of s—” while arguing Democrats are embracing communism.

The remarks came hours after El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democrat Senate primary, winning by less than one percentage point after The Associated Press called the race early Wednesday.

He will face Republican Mike Rogers in November for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters.

Trump devoted several minutes of his Las Vegas speech to attacking democratic socialist candidates, arguing they are advancing communist ideas and calling communism “the greatest threat” facing the United States.

“These people are dangerous and frankly, they are lunatics. They’re crazy, and we can’t let them get into office,” Trump said. “Communism is the greatest threat to our country in its history, including even World War One, World War Two, Pearl Harbor, 9/11. I think it’s the greatest threat.”

The White House later amplified that portion of Trump’s remarks on social media, posting simply: “Communism is the greatest threat to our country.”

Trump mocked what he said communist policies would mean for Americans.

“Would you like a free house? We’ll take one from your neighbor. Would you like free rent? We’ll take it from whoever. We’ll take your building away from the landlord,” Trump said. “What they don’t say, and what Republicans should say, is that at the end of the year, you’ll have nothing but death, squalor, poverty. You’ll have a life of hell.”

The president pointed to Venezuela as an example of what he said happens when communist policies take hold.

“Look at Venezuela, where it was such a rich country 20 years ago,” Trump said. “Every time this has happened, you go through squalor … filth, crime, death, destruction, embarrassment. You lose your home. You lose your apartment.”

Trump then singled out El-Sayed by name, drawing one of the loudest reactions of the night.

“When I watch Abdul, he’s full of s—,” Trump said.

El-Sayed’s victory gives Democrats a progressive nominee in one of the country’s most closely watched Senate races. Backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., El-Sayed campaigned on Medicare for All, getting money out of politics and ending U.S. military aid to Israel.

He has described himself as a capitalist and has distanced himself from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), though Republicans have frequently tied him to the broader democratic socialist movement.

Trump later returned to a familiar theme from the second term of his presidency.

“If you remember, during my State of the Union speech, I made a very strong statement. I said that America will never be a socialist country,” Trump said. “I was right.”

The president argued Democrats now want to move beyond socialism.

“What I didn’t say is what they’re trying to do. They want to skip socialism. They want to go right down to the bottom of the barrel. That’s communism,” Trump said. “They want it to be a communist country. We’re not letting them have it as a communist country, not even for a minute.”

Trump closed by vowing to defeat what he called the Democrat Party’s leftward movement.

“Together we will defeat communism, socialism and Marxism in America once and for all,” Trump said. “It’s defeated. It’s going to go down. It always goes down.”

Most detailed images ever taken of sun’s surface revealed: “Major step forward”

    August 5, 2026 / 8:55 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Scientists have captured images of the sun’s surface in the finest detail yet, revealing a strange and dynamic facade.

It’s dangerous to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection. But researchers were able to peek at its scorching surface with the help of the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, located on the island of Maui in Hawaii.

Scientists originally took the images for a different reason: to fine-tune and test the limits of the telescope. But when they looked at the results, they realized they’d photographed the sun’s bright outer shell at higher resolution than ever before.

What’s more, they saw strange feathery patterns rippling across the surface.

The images “reveal a solar landscape unlike any that had been seen before, uncovering small-scale and dynamic swirls everywhere at the edges of magnetic areas,” the NSF’s National Solar Observatory said in a news release.

This undated image provided by the NSF National Solar Observatory on Aug. 3, 2026, shows the sun’s surface. National Science Foundation National Solar Observatory via AP

“That reminds me of famous paintings, like the swirling skies in Van Gogh’s Starry Night,” said solar physicist Ruizhu Chen with Stanford University, who was not involved with the new research.

Researchers saw ripples of instability on the sun’s surface caused by bits of magnetized plasma moving past each other at different speeds — similar to waves that stir when a gust of wind blows over water. It’s a well-known phenomenon called the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) that guides how fluids move.

This has been glimpsed on Earth and other planets like Jupiter and Saturn, but “it has not been observed ever at that level on the solar surface,” according to study co-author Friedrich Wöger with the National Solar Observatory.

Dr. David Boboltz, deputy director at the National Solar Observatory, said the discovery, “backed up by analysis of numerical simulations, is a major step forward in our understanding of the dynamics and evolution of solar and stellar plasma, and will serve as a basis for future discoveries.”

The findings were published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Scientists are curious about the sun’s inner workings to better track massive bursts of energy called coronal mass ejections that can hurl toward Earth. When they hit, they can trigger solar storms, potentially scrambling GPS communications and producing colorful auroras.

“To understand the dynamic space weather that affects Earth, we have to see the small-scale processes driving it,” said Dr. Jacqueline Keane, NSF program director for the National Solar Observatory. “For decades, seeing these vortices at such tiny scales remained elusive. By pairing a massive four-meter mirror with state-of-the-art optics and instruments, the NSF Inouye Solar Telescope delivers the resolving power needed to reveal these ultrafine details for the first time, enabling discoveries that were once beyond our reach.”

FDA approves Moderna’s mRNA flu vaccine after initial pushback

    August 5, 2026 11:09 PM EDT / CBS News

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new seasonal flu vaccine from Moderna that uses mRNA technology, the drugmaker announced Wednesday.

mFLUSIVA, approved for adults ages 50 and older, is the first influenza vaccine using mRNA technology to receive FDA approval.

“This approval also reflects the ongoing potential of our mRNA platform to help address important public health challenges through continued scientific innovation. We are grateful to the clinical trial participants, investigators, regulators and Moderna teams whose contributions made this milestone possible,” Moderna said in a statement.

It comes after the FDA had earlier this year said it would refuse to consider Moderna’ application, but later reversed course and stated it would allow the vaccine to proceed to review.

The dispute had centered on a 40,000-person clinical trial that found Moderna’s new vaccine was more effective in adults aged 50 and older than one of the standard flu shots used today.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Meta says its AI model breached a third-party company during testing

    August 5, 2026 / 11:50 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Tech giant Meta revealed Wednesday that one of its artificial intelligence models hacked another organization during testing, the third time in recent weeks that an AI model has improperly accessed a third-party company.

In a statement provided to CBS News, Meta said that “a misconfiguration by Irregular, an independent testing company Meta uses, inadvertently allowed one of our models access to the internet during evaluation.”

In its statement, Meta did not name the AI model in question, but sources told the tech outlet The Information that it involved Meta’s Muse Spark 1.1, according to Reuters.

“The model subsequently exploited a security vulnerability in a third-party service, in a manner similar to previously-reported instances with other companies,” Meta said Wednesday. “Meta learned of this when Irregular notified us, and we are currently investigating and will issue a full retrospective once we have all the facts.”

Last week, Anthropic said its artificial intelligence models hacked into three other organizations during testing. The revelation came just days after ChatGPT maker OpenAI disclosed its rogue models had also hacked another company.

Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI company behind Claude, posted on its website July 30 that it discovered the three incidents after reviewing more than 141,000 evaluation runs.

It had launched a “large-scale” cybersecurity review which specifically looked for evidence whether its AI models were able to access the internet from within testing environments that should have been sealed off, in response to the OpenAI incident, Anthropic said.

Anthropic said the models involved in the incidents were Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Mythos 5 and an internal research test model. The earliest incidents date to April, the AI company said.

“Claude compromised the impacted organizations’ infrastructure using basic techniques,” Anthropic said, such as exploiting weak passwords.

In all three incidents, the AI models were tasked with a “capture the flag” cybersecurity challenge, which Anthropic said has been one of the ways it assesses a model’s cyber capabilities.

The models were given a fictional scenario and told a piece of secret information, or the “flag,” had been hidden on a different machine on the network with the objective of breaking in and retrieving it, it said.

It added that it had already reached out to the affected organizations, which it did not name. Two of them said they had not previously detected the activity. Anthropic said it was “continuing to reach out to the third.”

Anthropic also said it conducted its review with Irregular.

“Addressing these risks will require closer cooperation across the AI ecosystem,” Irregular said in a July 30 post on X.

Last month, OpenAI said its AI models went rogue during an evaluation of its models, breaking into the servers of AI startup Hugging Face. OpenAI described it as a “significant security incident.”

These incidents have highlighted the vulnerabilities in AI security and controls and raised questions over how AI can be safely kept under human control as the technology’s usage becomes more widespread globally.
