Judge tosses out Trump administration lawsuit seeking access to Arizona voter data

A federal judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit from the Justice Department seeking information on Arizona voters, another defeat in the Trump administration’s nationwide push for voter data.

U.S. District Judge Susan Brnovich sided with Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, finding that Title III of the Civil Rights Act of 1960 doesn’t grant the Justice Department the power to demand that Arizona produce its statewide voter registration list.

“This case presents a legal question: is the Attorney General entitled to the SVRL under Title III,” the Trump-nominated judge wrote. “It does not present a political question: should the Attorney General be entitled to the SVRL.”

Fontes and Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes hailed the ruling, writing in a joint statement Thursday that the data sought by the Justice Department “contains the sensitive personal information of millions of Arizona voters.”

“Arizona acted correctly in refusing this request, and today’s ruling vindicates that decision,” they said. “Our offices will continue to defend the privacy of Arizona voters against federal overreach.”

CBS News has reached out to the Justice Department for comment.

The ruling marks the Justice Department’s sixth loss in lawsuits seeking state-level voter data, following similar rulings in California, Oregon, Michigan, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The Justice Department asked Fontes to hand over Arizona’s voter registration list last summer, saying it was checking the state’s compliance with the National Voter Registration Act and Help America Vote Act. The department later clarified that it needed voters’ full names, dates of birth, home addresses and either their driver’s license numbers or partial Social Security numbers.

Fontes declined to share that data, citing state and federal privacy laws. The Justice Department then sued the state in January.

The Justice Department has sued dozens of other states and Washington, D.C., for voter data, usually citing a need to ensure that states were complying with federal laws requiring states to maintain accurate voter registration lists. A department official wrote last month that the government is looking to do an “individualized assessment” of Arizona’s voter registration data.

The federal government acknowledged in a separate lawsuit involving Rhode Island’s voter registration list that it planned to run that state’s data through a Homeland Security database to check if any noncitizens are registered to vote. CBS News reported last month on a deal between the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security to use voter registration data for immigration and criminal investigations.

Mr. Trump has sought for months to expand the federal government’s role in elections, accusing states of mismanaging the process and claiming — without evidence — that U.S. elections are riddled with fraud. He has often focused on voting by noncitizens, which is rare.

The president has pushed lawmakers to pass legislation called the SAVE America Act that would require people to show proof of citizenship to register to vote and an ID to cast a ballot.

He also signed an executive order last year that sought to impose a proof-of-citizenship requirement, which a judge struck down. Earlier this year, Mr. Trump signed a separate order that directed his administration to draw up lists of confirmed U.S. citizens who are eligible to vote in each state, and said the U.S. Postal Service can only send absentee ballots to people on each state’s federally prepared list. Almost two dozen states are suing over the order.

Feds have rejected 15% of businesses’ tariff refund claims

Roughly 15% of tariff refund requests have been rejected since a government reimbursement portal launched on April 20, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

As of April 26, the federal agency had received more than 75,000 refund requests from U.S. businesses and other importers. More than 47,000 claims encompassing some 11 million tariff payments were properly filed, CBP official Brandon Lord said in a filing with the Court of International Trade on Tuesday.

The agency launched the Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries tariff refund system, known as CAPE, to comply with an order issued following the Supreme Court’s February ruling striking down emergency levies imposed by President Trump.

Nick Richards, a partner at law firm Greenspoon Marder who has advised clients seeking tariff refunds, told CBS News that some businesses are likely making errors in their claims submissions. In the first phase of the refund process, CAPE is only accepting applications for tariffs that have been finalized by CBP or estimated duties that can still be estimated.

Additionally, businesses may only seek refunds for tariffs imposed by the Trump administration under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

“There are parameters, and I would imagine some of the submissions are outside of that scope,” Richards said.

Apart from some glitches when CAPE launched last week, the portal is running smoothly, according to CBP.

“Since the opening of CAPE on April 20, 2026, the only time during which the CAPE functionality was not available for use by importers and their brokers was an 18-minute period on April 20, 2026, when CBP briefly paused the ability to submit declarations to reconfigure resources and optimize the processing of CAPE declarations,” Lord said in the filing.

Despite some hiccups, Richards said the process appears to be going smoothly. “I was amazed at the speed with which Customs put up this portal, so kudos to them,” he said. “They’ve done an amazing job rolling this out.”

WASHINGTON, April 28 (Reuters) – The Republican-led U.S. ​Senate on Tuesday blocked a Democratic-led resolution that would have barred ‌President Donald Trump from military action against Cuba without congressional approval.

The Senate voted 51 to 47, almost entirely along party lines, on a procedural measure that blocked a war powers resolution, as ​members of Trump’s party argued that there are no active U.S. hostilities ​against Cuba.

Republican Senator Rick Scott of Florida, who introduced the point of ⁠order that stopped the resolution, said a war powers vote was not appropriate ​because Trump has not deployed troops.

Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, a lead sponsor ​of the measure, had argued that U.S. efforts to stop fuel shipments to the Communist-ruled island constitute military action.

“If anyone were doing to the United States what we are doing to Cuba, ​we would definitely regard it as an act of war,” Kaine said in a ​Senate speech before the vote.

Under Trump, U.S. forces have launched strikes on boats off Venezuela and ‌gone ⁠into Caracas to seize President Nicolas Maduro, and, with Israel, waged war on Iran since February 28, all without authorization from Congress.

Trump has said “Cuba is next.” He did not specify what he plans to do with the island nation, but has frequently said ​he believes its government ​is on the ⁠verge of collapse.

Democrats have failed repeatedly in both the Senate and House of Representatives to force Trump to obtain congressional authorization for ​military operations.

Trump’s fellow Republicans, who hold slim majorities in both ​the Senate ⁠and House, have almost unanimously voted down such resolutions, accusing Democrats of using the war powers act to try to weaken Trump.

Although the U.S. Constitution says Congress, not the ⁠president, can ​declare war, that restriction does not apply for ​short-term operations or to counter an immediate threat.

The White House says Trump’s actions are within his rights, and ​obligation, as commander-in-chief to protect the U.S.

Federal agents are currently raiding 22 businesses in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as part of a major federal fraud investigation. Brooke Taylor reports live that the raids are connected to a viral YouTube video from Nick Shirley, which exposed alleged childcare funding fraud in December. The Trump administration previously froze childcare funding and called for a full audit of certain daycare centers.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz faced immediate backlash Tuesday after claiming credit for federal fraud raids in Minneapolis, prompting a sharp rebuke from FBI Director Kash Patel.

The clash underscores growing political tensions over a sweeping probe into fraud that critics say unfolded under Walz’s watch, as federal authorities now take the lead.

“Come again?” Patel posted on X in response to Walz, who claimed that Tuesday’s raids happened because Minnesota state agencies “caught irregular behavior and reported it.”

“This FBI and DOJ with our DHS partners drafted and executed every search warrant today. But go ahead and take credit for our work while we smoke out the fraud plaguing Minnesota under your governorship.”

Walz’s tweet, viewed over a million times in just a few hours, was widely panned by conservatives who pointed out that the massive fraud scandal unfolded under his watch and that the public pressure was ultimately what forced him to drop his re-election bid for governor.

Federal authorities raided more than 20 locations, including childcare facilities, in Minneapolis on Tuesday as part of a sweeping fraud investigation into largely Somali-owned businesses, sources confirmed to Fox News.

“Today the FBI with federal, state and local law enforcement is involved in court-authorized law enforcement activity as part of an ongoing fraud investigation,” a Department of Justice spokesperson said.

Authorities executed 22 federal search warrants in Minnesota on Tuesday morning as part of the operation, which is not immigration-related, sources said.

U.K. ambassador, in leaked remarks, said the “one country” with a “special relationship” with the U.S. is “probably Israel”

Britain’s Ambassador to the U.S., Sir Christian Turner, said in February, before the U.S. and Israel launched their joint war with Iran, that to him it seemed the “only country” to have a “special relationship” with the United States was “probably Israel.”

Turner made the remarks to a group of British high-school age students visiting the U.S. A recording of the comments was obtained by the Financial Times and reported by the newspaper on Tuesday.

Turner also told the students he considered it “extraordinary” that the scandal over the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein had “brought down a senior member of the royal family Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, a British ambassador to Washington Peter Mandelson, potentially the prime minister Keir Starmer, and yet here in the U.S., it really hasn’t touched anybody.”

Turner said that he didn’t like the term “special relationship,” coined by Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the wake of World War II, to describe the U.S.-U.K. bond, calling it “quite nostalgic” and “backwards-looking,” according to the FT.

“I think there is probably one country that has a special relationship with the United States,” he said, “and that is probably Israel.”

CBS News has not reviewed the audio of his remarks, but the British government has not denied their authenticity.

In a statement to CBS News, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said Turner’s remarks were “private, informal comments made to a group of U.K. sixth-form students visiting the U.S. in early February. They are certainly not any reflection of the UK Government’s position.”

Turner did tell the students, who would have been mostly 16 and 17 years old in that grade level, that U.K.-U.S. ties were “so strong,” citing “a deep history and affinity between us. Particularly on defense and security, we are intertwined.”

His private remarks were made public as King Charles III and Queen Camila paid a formal state visit to the U.S., being welcomed at the White House by President Trump ahead of an address by the monarch to a joint session of the U.S. Congress.

The royal visit has been seen widely as a bid by the U.K. government to ease transatlantic ties, after Mr. Trump’s repeated bashing of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whom the American leader has accused of failing to support the Iran war effort.

Starmer has also been fighting domestic calls for his resignation by political opponents over his decision to appoint Turner’s predecessor, Peter Mandelson — a friend of Epstein’s — to the ambassadorship.

Starmer fired Mandelson — a mainstay of Starmer’s own Labour Party since the 1990s — from the ambassadorship in September, soon after details of the depth of his friendship with Epstein emerged in the infamous files released in Washington.

Mr. Trump weighed in on the matter last week, predicting that Starmer can recover from the scandal.

As Democrats and Republicans clash over escalating political rhetoric in the wake of Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting, Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., is urging leaders on both sides to “bring the temperature down.”

The call for cooler rhetoric comes after Cole Allen, 31, of Torrance, Calif., allegedly stormed the lobby of the Washington Hilton hotel during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and opened fire.

“It’s an opportunity, in my opinion, for everyone to bring the temperature down,” Moskowitz told Fox News Digital. “If we do the finger pointing, then the temperature’s never going to come down…We’re like high schoolers.”

Allen, who was armed with a shotgun, handgun and knives, was apprehended by the Secret Service as hundreds of journalists and Cabinet officials were escorted out of the hotel.

“The rhetoric on both sides, for a while now, has been elevated, and listen, the president has had a part of that,” Moskowitz said. “He’s had responsibility in the rhetoric, and he should own that. His tweets exist. There’s a reality of that.”

Allen, who appeared in federal court Monday, is facing charges of attempting to assassinate the President of the United States, transporting a firearm across state lines and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

Authorities said the suspect sent a written manifesto to members of his family outlining his intent to target Trump and other Cabinet officials before the alleged shooting.

“The manifesto doesn’t sound much different than all of the talking heads on every liberal news station,” Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., said.

This would mark another assassination attempt targeting President Trump after two in 2024, when he was shot in the ear at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., and later targeted at his Florida golf course.

“You got psycho-frickin’ leftists trying to assassinate President Trump once again… the violence is always on their side,” Boebert said. “It is disgusting, and it needs to end, period.”

She said that President Trump’s plan for a ballroom addition to the White House is a necessary security measure.

“I want the ballroom built,” she said. “This is a national security issue at this time, and it needs to be built.”

She added these incidents are part of a larger pattern. In September, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University as part of his “American Comeback Tour.”

“Look what they did to Charlie Kirk, a man that wanted to sit down and have a conversation,” Boebert said. “They hated him so much, their rhetoric caused him to be assassinated. One of their liberal freaks assassinated him. This only happens with liberals,” Boebert said.

In a news conference on Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters a “left-wing cult of hatred” was to blame for the violence.

Leavitt slammed ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for his recent comment that the first lady had the “glow of an expectant widow.”

“Who in their right mind says a wife would be glowing over the potential murder of her beloved husband?” she said. “And having experienced what I did with the first lady on Saturday night, I can tell you she was anything but that.”

Multiple Democrats have also rejected far-left streamer Hasan Piker amid scrutiny of his political rhetoric. Piker pushed back, calling those condemning him “propagandists for the state of Israel.”

“I do reject people on my side, or trying to be on my side, like Hasan Piker, who’s advocating for senators to be killed and saying things like, ‘we deserve 9/11.’ He’s not a Democrat. He doesn’t belong in the Democratic Party,” Moskowitz said.

However, he said Americans “don’t believe” either side is blameless.

“The American people don’t believe that and it’s why our poll numbers for both sides are in the tubes,” Moskowitz said.

Fox News Digital attempted to ask Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., about the shooting and rising political violence, but she ignored the questions.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Virginia high court leaves Democratic-led redistricting vote blocked for now

April 28 (Reuters) – Virginia’s top court on Tuesday left in place a county judge’s order temporarily blocking the state from certifying the results of last week’s ​referendum, when voters approved a new Democratic-drawn congressional map aimed at flipping ‌four Republican U.S. House seats.

The ruling, which came in one of three lawsuits Republicans have filed challenging the ballot measure, is not the last word on the election. The Virginia ​Supreme Court heard arguments in another lawsuit on Monday over whether Democrats ​complied with legal requirements when initiating the referendum, but it has ⁠not yet reached a final decision in any of the cases.

If allowed ​to stand, the ballot measure would give Democrats the advantage in 10 of the ​state’s 11 U.S. House of Representatives districts in November’s midterm elections, up from the party’s current 6-5 edge. Democrats need to flip three Republican-held seats to gain a House majority and break Republicans’ ​unified control of Washington.

The fight in Virginia is part of a national redistricting battle ​that President Donald Trump launched last summer, when he pushed Texas Republicans to install a ‌new ⁠congressional map targeting five Democratic incumbents. Other states, both Republican- and Democratic-led, soon followed.

Florida appears to be the final state intent on redrawing its districts ahead of November. Republican lawmakers are preparing to vote on Wednesday on whether to approve a new ​map, drawn by ​Governor Ron DeSantis’ ⁠office, that is intended to flip four Democratic seats.

If Virginia’s referendum is blocked, and DeSantis’ effort is successful, that would ​give Republicans a windfall of around seven seats after the ​months-long redistricting ⁠arms race.

Tuesday’s order in Virginia came as part of a lawsuit filed by the Republican National Committee. Last Wednesday, the day after the election, a judge in Tazewell ⁠County ​ruled the referendum was illegal and blocked state ​officials from certifying the results.

Democratic state Attorney General Jay Jones appealed, but the state Supreme Court denied ​his request on Tuesday.

“All my life I’ve been hearing about the United States and Cuba — when will the United States do it? I do believe I’ll be the honor, having the honor of taking Cuba,” Trump said in March.

The resolution, introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., would require the removal of forces from within or around Cuba and considers the “use of the United States Coast Guard and other components of the Armed Forces to conduct a blockade or quarantine of Cuba” a hostile act that would require Congress’ approval.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., moved to block the bill from getting a full vote on the floor. His gamble was successful, though Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, joined nearly every Senate Democrat to force the vote. Only Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., broke ranks to support tanking the resolution.

Still, Trump has not taken action on Cuba while the U.S. is engaged in the war in Iran.

Kaine’s war powers resolution marked a momentary departure from Democrats’ quest to rein in Trump’s authority in the Middle East. Republicans have so far batted down five attempts to cease hostilities in the region.

When asked by Fox News Digital if he was surprised that most Republicans had stayed in line, save for Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., Kaine said, “You gotta ask Republicans about their position.”

“There are many saying that the 60-day time frame is relevant to them,” Kaine said. “We’ll see that because we’ll have an Iran war vote close to the 60-day deadline by the end of this week.”

Support for that conflict, while still holding out among most Senate Republicans, is growing strained by the day as the 60-day deadline for Congress to weigh in under the War Powers Resolution Act is set to hit this week.

At least three Senate Republicans — Susan Collins of Maine, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, and John Curtis of Utah — said they wouldn’t extend Trump’s war in the region after 60 days. And Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, is working on an Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) for lawmakers to weigh in on the conflict.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., argued that Republicans should “do Trump a favor” by joining Democrats to block future engagements with Cuba without congressional approval.

“The last thing working Americans need right now is another war, let alone one that’s 90 miles south of the United States,” Schumer said on the Senate floor. “Republicans must get out in front of a looming catastrophe in Cuba before it gets even worse, as they should have done with Trump’s war in Iran.”
