(Litmus Test),30-1
(Right to Party),30-1
(Commandment),6-1
(Danon Bourbon),20-1
(So Happy),15-1
(The Puma),10-1
(Wonder Dean),30-1
(Incredibolt),20-1
(Chief Wallabee),8-1
(Emerging Market),15-1
(Pavlovian),30-1
    • 17. 六速(Six Speed),50-1
(Further Ado),6-1
(Golden Tempo),30-1
(Great White),50-1
(Ocelli),50-1

The Kentucky Derby will see a full field of 20 horses Saturday in the first leg of the 2026 competition for horse racing’s Triple Crown.

The Run for the Roses in Louisville, Kentucky, is the opening race for the Triple Crown, the series for 3-year-olds that’s traditionally followed by the Preakness Stakes in Maryland and the Belmont Stakes in New York. The last time a horse swept all three races was in 2018, when Justify galloped his way into the history books as the 13th Triple Crown winner.

2026 Kentucky Derby horses and odds

The field for the 1 1/4-mile Derby has been capped at 20 horses since 1975. For the 2026 Derby, Renegade, with 4-1 odds, was picked as the morning-line favorite last Saturday by Nick Tammaro, the oddsmaker at Churchill Downs Racetrack, the home of the Derby.

The odds will change as bettors make their wagers ahead of Saturday’s Derby, the 12th race of the day at Churchill Downs with an approximate post time of 6:57 p.m. ET.

Since Saturday’s post-position draw, two horses have scratched from the race — No. 20 Fulleffort and No. 13 Silent Tactic — allowing for two others to draw into the field. Here’s a list of the horses racing in the Derby in order by post position with their morning-line odds:

    • 1. Renegade, 4-1
    • 2. Albus, 30-1
    • 3. Intrepido, 50-1
    • 4. Litmus Test, 30-1
    • 5. Right to Party, 30-1
    • 6. Commandment, 6-1
    • 7. Danon Bourbon, 20-1
    • 8. So Happy, 15-1
    • 9. The Puma, 10-1
    • 10. Wonder Dean, 30-1
    • 11. Incredibolt, 20-1
    • 12. Chief Wallabee, 8-1
    • 14. Potente, 20-1
    • 15. Emerging Market, 15-1
    • 16. Pavlovian, 30-1
    • 17. Six Speed, 50-1
    • 18. Further Ado, 6-1
    • 19. Golden Tempo, 30-1
    • 21. Great White, 50-1
    • 22. Ocelli, 50-1

Renegade drew the No. 1 post for the Derby, the innermost position in the starting gate where horses are at risk of getting boxed in between the rail and the rest of the field and falling behind early in the race. The post hasn’t produced a Derby winner since Ferdinand won in 1986, and the last contender from the post to finish in the top three was Lookin At Lee, who came in second in 2017.

Renegade and the other horses qualified for the Derby by accruing points from races held as long ago as last September. The bay colt won the Arkansas Derby in March and Florida’s Sam F. Davis Stakes in February, where fellow Derby contender The Puma took third. Renegade also came in second in the Remsen Stakes in New York City in December.

Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride Renegade in what will be the jockey’s 10th Derby. Ortiz has yet to finish in the money in the Triple Crown opener. The 33-year-old has been close, coming in what was ultimately fourth place aboard Improbable in 2019, after the first horse across the finish line, Maximum Security, was disqualified in a wild ending to the race. At the Belmont, Ortiz has ridden two horses to victory: Creator in 2016 and Mo Donegal in 2022.

Commandment and Further Ado each received 6-1 odds in the morning line. Commandment won the Florida Derby in March, finishing ahead of The Puma and another Derby competitor, Chief Wallabee, who came in second and third, respectively. The bay colt also won Florida’s Fountain of Youth Stakes in February, where Chief Wallabee took second.

Luis Saez will be aboard Commandment for his 13th Derby. The 33-year-old’s best performance at the Derby came in 2021, when Essential Quality finished in fourth place but ultimately moved up to third after the winner, Medina Spirit, was stripped of his victory over a positive drug test. Five weeks after the Derby, Essential Quality was under Saez for his first win at the Belmont. His second Belmont win came when he was aboard Dornoch in 2024.

Further Ado won the Blue Grass Stakes in Lexington last month and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs in November. The chestnut colt came in second at Florida’s Tampa Bay Derby in March behind The Puma.

John Velazquez will have the mount Saturday in pursuit of his fourth Derby win, his most recent being in 2020 with Authentic after Medina Spirit was stripped of his 2021 victory. The 54-year-old has also won the Preakness with National Treasure in 2023 and the Belmont twice, with Union Rags in 2012 and the filly Rags to Riches in 2007.

With 8-1 odds in the morning line, Chief Wallabee comes to Churchill Downs with jockey Junior Alvarado and trainer Bill Mott, the same duo behind Sovereignty’s wins last year at the Derby and the Belmont.

The victories were Alvarado’s first in each of the events. In the Derby, the 39-year-old was fined $62,000 and suspended for two race days for using his riding crop excessively. He appealed, and the penalty was lowered to $31,000 and a one-day suspension.

Sovereignty was the second Derby winner trained by Mott. He also trained Country House, the surprise winner of the 2019 race after Maximum Security was disqualified. At the Belmont, Sovereignty brought Mott his second win, 15 years after Drosselmeyer gave him his first in 2010.

Alvarado and Mott won’t be the only winning jockey and trainer reuniting at the Derby. Jockey Javier Castellano and trainer Gustavo Delgado are teaming up with The Puma, who was given 10-1 odds in the morning line. The two worked together on Mage’s Derby victory in 2023.

The Puma will be Castellano’s 18th mount in the Derby. The 48-year-old also took the Belmont aboard Arcangelo in 2023, and he has two Preakness wins under his belt, with Cloud Computing in 2017 and Bernardini in 2006. Delgado has run two other horses in the Derby: Bodexpress, who finished 13th in 2019, and Majesto, who came in 18th place in 2016.

Mike Smith has the most Derby mounts of any jockey in the race’s history with 28, followed closely by Velazquez with 26. Smith will add to his count with So Happy, who got 15-1 morning-line odds.

The bay colt won the Santa Anita Derby at Southern California’s Santa Anita Park last month ahead of fellow Derby contenders Potente and Intrepido, who came in second and fourth, respectively. So Happy also finished third in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita in March, behind the first-place Potente.

Smith was aboard Justify for all three races during his Triple Crown campaign in 2018. He also rode Giacomo to victory in the 2005 Derby.

Emerging Market was the other horse with 15-1 odds in the morning line. The chestnut colt won the Louisiana Derby in March with fellow Derby contenders Pavlovian and Golden Tempo in second and third, respectively.

Flavien Prat will have the mount, chasing his second Derby win after riding Country House in 2019. The 33-year-old has come close several times in recent years, finishing third with Baeza last year, fourth with Catching Freedom in 2024 and third with Angel of Empire in 2023.

Bob Baffert has two chances this year to become the trainer with the most Derby wins, with Potente, who was given 20-1 odds in the morning line, and Litmus Test, who got 30-1 odds. Baffert, who trained Justify and 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, has been tied with Ben Jones at six all-time wins since the Baffert-trained Authentic won the 2020 Derby.

Two other colts were given 20-1 odds in the morning line: Danon Bourbon and Incredibolt.

Albus, Right to Party, Wonder Dean, Pavlovian and Golden Tempo are among the five other colts who got 30-1 morning-line odds.

The departures of Fulleffort and Silent Tactic made room for Great White and Ocelli to enter the field. They’re among the four horses given 50-1 odds in the morning line, including Six Speed and Intrepido.

(REUTERS)

Ron DeSantis finds second act as key Trump ally. Will his third act be a 2028 run?

In a matter of days this week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis dragged lawmakers to Tallahassee, handed them an aggressively gerrymandered congressional map, strong-armed the Republican-controlled legislature into backing it and tilted the midterm battlefield toward his party.

It was a familiar display of the raw political power that DeSantis once used to fight culture wars and notch conservative victories as he chased the presidency. Now, he is flexing that same authority in service of the man who dimmed his White House dreams — but who could yet revive them: President Donald Trump.

Over the past 16 months, few, if any, Republicans outside Washington have proven more indispensable to Trump than DeSantis. He has enthusiastically aided the federal immigration crackdown — forcing law enforcement to cooperate with Trump’s ICE, launching a statewide dragnet that has troubled even deeply conservative sheriffs and erecting a costly detention center on Florida swampland that became known as “Alligator Alcatraz.” He created a Florida version of the Department of Government Efficiency, echoed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in pushing to end school vaccine requirements, is helping the White House rewrite the rules for how colleges pay student-athletes and arranged for the state to hand over a prime piece of Miami waterfront to a foundation planning Trump’s presidential library.

DeSantis’ realignment with Trump comes as uncertainty hangs over his political future. His second term as governor ends in January, leaving him two plausible paths: a job in Trump’s Washington, or positioning himself for a Republican Party after Trump.

Both require the president’s favor — and perhaps some bridge-mending with his remaining foes in Trump’s inner circle. DeSantis has responded to that reality with the same hard-changing, maximalist governing style that fueled his first rise to political stardom.

His latest win for Trump — a new congressional map that could net the GOP four more House seats this fall — potentially rescued the Republican Party’s flailing mid-decade redistricting gambit. And it has earned praise from corners of the president’s orbit that once mobilized against him when he challenged Trump in the 2024 Republican primary.

Mike Davis, a longtime Trump legal adviser who regularly mocked DeSantis’ presidential campaign, wrote on X shortly after Florida lawmakers approved the new district boundaries: “Once again, America’s best governor delivers. And fast.”

“Finishing strong is going to be important for his legacy and he knows that’s what will impact his future and how people view him more than anything else,” said Nick Iarossi, a lobbyist who has raised money for both Trump and DeSantis and has clients in Washington, DC, and Tallahassee.

DeSantis’ office did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment. White House spokesman Davis Ingle said Trump “appreciates the work Governor DeSantis is doing in the great state of Florida and the ongoing partnership they maintain to help advance the President’s America First agenda.”

    A 2028 run ‘if there’s a lane’

It’s not a secret that DeSantis continues to harbor presidential ambitions. “We’ll see,” he teased when recently asked by Fox host Sean Hannity if he would run again. He is already testing a pitch to future primary voters that leans heavily on his track record of conservative wins.

“I think we’ll be able to say, ‘You know what, we had eight years, and show me someone that’s been more consequential,’” he said in a recent interview with television host Graham Bensinger.

It’s a message that echoes the one he delivered across the country leading up to the 2024 GOP primary — and one he maintains would’ve been successful were it not for Trump. He asserted to Hannity that 90% of Iowa caucusgoers would’ve backed him if Trump hadn’t sought another term. (DeSantis instead came in second in the Iowa GOP caucuses with 21% of the vote, narrowly ahead of Nikki Haley. He ended his campaign shortly after and endorsed Trump.)

“I’d have people in these early states tell me, ‘You know, you’re going to be a great president. I think you’re going to be better than (Ronald) Reagan, but I’m for Trump this time. But I’ll vote for you next time,’” he told Bensinger.

Critics of DeSantis’ 2024 campaign — including from within his own operation — believed his problems went beyond just the presence of Trump, contending that he made strategic missteps and failed to energize GOP voters. A pair of veteran Republican operatives dubbed it “the worst Republican presidential campaign ever.”

Those close to DeSantis acknowledge the uphill climb for him to reemerge as a leading figure in 2028. His political operation is virtually non-existent, and there’s little expectation even among DeSantis stalwarts that his 2024 donors would risk alienating Vice President JD Vance, most-likely to run as Trump’s heir, or Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a rising contender who also hails from the Sunshine State.

Against that backdrop, the governor’s strategy for now is to become an asset to Trump — and an ally once more. They have golfed twice in recent months. Trump told DeSantis last year at a joint appearance: “You’ll always be my friend.”

DeSantis has also shown more willingness than Trump to appease some of the MAGA base’s priorities. He’s gone beyond Trump’s efforts to curb legal immigration and moved to limit H-1B visa holders from state university jobs. He has also distinguished himself from Vance by emerging as a leading critic of the tech industry, pushing for state limits on artificial intelligence against Trump’s wishes.

A person close to DeSantis said while Vance and Rubio may have the upper hand for now, the governor’s ability to maintain a personal relationship with Trump while distancing himself on some issues could prove useful if Republicans grow wary of the current administration. It also remains unclear if or when Trump will formally throw his weight behind a successor, leaving DeSantis with room to operate.

“He’s watching,” the person said. “And he won’t hesitate to run if there’s lane.”

    Cabinet hopes

In the short term, though, DeSantis may need a job. As vacancies have opened atop justice, homeland security and labor departments, DeSantis’ name has regularly surfaced as a possible replacement, and he is open to serving in the Trump administration. Multiple people told CNN that Trump is aware DeSantis’ preference would be to lead the Pentagon, though Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s job appears safe for now.

“I’m a service-oriented person,” he told Bensinger, adding he would “never rule anything out.”

However, DeSantis’ icy relationship with Trump’s inner circle, including White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair, remains a hurdle to any appointment. Wiles and Blair once worked for DeSantis before an acrimonious falling out that became a subplot of the bruising 2024 GOP primary.

Given that history, his reputation in the West Wing is still so poor that Vance once overheard a conversation about the governor between Trump aides and remarked, “Wow, you guys really hate Ron DeSantis,” a person who witnessed the exchange said.

The person added that while DeSantis’ name may get floated by supporters of both the governor and Trump, it hasn’t come from inside the White House.

“He’s not regarded as a team player,” the person added.

Notably, DeSantis is not scheduled to appear at Trump’s appearance on Friday in Central Florida, though he was invited, according to a person with knowledge of the schedule. DeSantis’ office didn’t say why he turned them down.

“There’s been no dethawing between DeSantis and Trump’s inner circle,” a longtime Trump fundraiser told CNN. “I don’t know what the world looks like for him after this.”

Americans really don’t like Trump’s attempts at ornamentation

    Donald Trump

When the story of Donald Trump’s presidency is written, it’s quite likely that the h-word will figure prominently: hubris.

Look no further than how he’s tried to apply his name — and aesthetic — across America and the government.

During a time of significant ongoing economic stress, he decided to suddenly bulldoze the East Wing of the White House to build a big, fancy ballroom to hold parties with powerful people.

And even as his popularity is sinking to lows rarely seen in recent American history, he’s plowed forward with his highly unorthodox efforts to affix his moniker and likeness to all manner of government buildings and products — ranging from the Kennedy Center, the US Institute of Peace, to National Park passes, savings accounts, a prescription drugs website, a new class of battleships, fighter jets, a visa for rich people, gold coins, dollars bills and, now, to passports.

Up until now, we’ve had little polling by which to gauge how these initiatives landed with the American people. But as it turns out, Americans seem to regard these things as about as ghastly as they might seem.

Initial polling about the ballroom showed it overwhelmingly unpopular.

But even at the time, you could have been forgiven for thinking that was temporary. Maybe it was just jarring for Americans to see the demolition of a large portion of the White House. Maybe they’d see the value of a larger events space — that Trump says is privately funded — for a White House complex that needs it.

    Or maybe not.

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll found Americans hate it just as much today as they did back in October.

While they opposed the East Wing demolition and new ballroom project 56%-28% back then, they oppose it today 56%-28%.

Construction crews continue to remove the East Wing of the White House and prepare for the new ballroom construction as seen from the newly reopened Washington Monument on November 14, 2025, in Washington, DC.

Republicans seemed to sense an opportunity on this over the weekend. They jumped headlong into a pro-ballroom campaign after the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel.

The idea — at least as it was initially pitched — was that the ballroom would be a more secure venue for such events (never mind that it wouldn’t actually work for this dinner, for a host of reasons). They even decided to float spending $400 million in taxpayer money on it, not the private donations Trump has long said would fund it.

The Post-ABC poll was conducted both before and after the shooting. But although it found a modest rise in GOP support for the ballroom afterward, a statistical analysis showed that, overall, there was “no significant change in opinion associated with the shooting.”

Americans still opposed the ballroom 2-to-1. And those who felt strongly about it still opposed it 3-to-1 – just like before the shooting.

The verdict in the poll was even worse for two other Trump attempts at ornamentation.

Trump’s plan to build a 250-foot triumphal arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery?

    Americans oppose it 52%-21%.

Only a bare majority of Republicans (51%) support it, and independents oppose it by nearly a 5-to-1 margin (57%-12%).

(The proposed arch, like the ballroom, has also received overwhelmingly negative public feedback to the relevant regulatory commission.)

And the US Treasury’s move to put Trump’s signature on paper money – the first time that’s ever happened with a sitting president?

US President Donald Trump stands near models for a proposed “Independence Arch” as he speaks during a dinner with ballroom donors in the East Room of the White House on October 15, 2025.

    Andrew Caballero-Reynolds/AFP/Getty Images

Americans oppose that even more, 68%-12%.

Even Republicans lean against that one by double-digits, 42%-28%. And there’s almost no support outside of MAGA Republicans. (Non-MAGA Republicans oppose it 64%-10%.)

Apart from these surveys, there’s not much other data on Trump’s efforts to plaster his name on everything.

And a CNN poll back in January, after the Kennedy Center board voted to put Trump’s name on the building, would seem to confirm Americans don’t like his overall “changes to cultural institutions” like the Kennedy Center and Smithsonian.

Fully 62% of Americans — including 30% of Republicans — said he had “gone too far” with those changes.

Out of eight different Trump initiatives tested, that was the largest “gone too far” number.

In the world of political analysis, it can sometimes seem like nothing Trump does hurts him. After all, his approval rating had proven resilient, if low, for a long time.

But sometimes, the actions that seem kind of crazy to the naked eye do come off that way to the American people.

And now that the president is bleeding support more than ever over the Iran war and high gas prices, it’s clear that gilding DC and adorning the US government with more Trump isn’t helping.

Could the FCC yank ABC’s TV licenses amid Trump spat with Kimmel?

    2026-05-01 05:00:13 EDT / CBS News

The Federal Communications Commission would face major obstacles in stripping Disney of broadcast licenses for its ABC television stations, according to legal experts.

The FCC on Tuesday ordered an early review of the ABC licenses, saying it is investigating the network as part of its ongoing probe into Disney’s diversity, equity and inclusion practices. ABC owns eight TV stations, including WABC-TV in New York and KABC-TV in Los Angeles.

The timing of the expedited review is drawing scrutiny, as it occurred the day after President Trump called for Jimmy Kimmel’s firing. This followed a joke Kimmel made on his late-night ABC talk show that angered Mr. Trump and his wife, Melania Trump.

“This is a way to put pressure on Disney and ABC to achieve different programming and to get them to fire Jimmy Kimmel,” Katie Fallow, deputy litigation director of Columbia University’s Knight First Amendment Institute, told CBS News, adding that the timing of the FCC’s action is “highly suspect.”

Blair Levin, a policy analyst with investment adviser New Street Research who previously worked at the FCC, said in a report that the “timing of the order is strong evidence that the motive for the early renewal process relates to the president’s call to fire Kimmel, not an ABC employment action.”

    FCC allegations against Disney

Launched in March 2025, the FCC’s probe into Disney centers on whether the company’s DEI policies violated federal anti-discrimination rules. In a letter to then-Disney CEO Robert Iger last year, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr claimed that ABC’s mandatory “inclusion standards” may have caused racial and identity quotas at every level of production.

The agency also accuses ABC of using race-based hiring practices and of restricting corporate fellowships to selected demographic groups. The Disney investigation occurred during a broader effort by the Trump administration — already underway at the time — to roll back DEI initiatives across employers, federal agencies, universities and other organizations.

Disney did not respond to a request for comment. In a statement shared with CBS News earlier this week, a spokesperson for the entertainment company said it has a “long record” of operating in full compliance with FCC rules.

“We are confident that the record demonstrates our continued qualifications as licensees under the Communications Act and the First Amendment and are prepared to show that through the appropriate legal channels,” the spokesperson said.

The FCC also declined to comment, referring CBS News to Carr’s remarks at a press conference on Thursday. Asked by a reporter if the FCC’s move to ask Disney to file early license renewal applications for its ABC stations was connected to Kimmel’s joke, Carr instead focused on the agency’s allegations of discrimination.

“You can go all the way back to more than a year ago, in March of last year, where I wrote a letter to Disney saying that there was evidence… or allegations indicating that Disney, through this sort of invidious form of DEI discrimination, was creating, as I specified in a letter to them, racially segregated spaces inside the company,” he said.

Carr also noted that the FCC earlier this week ordered another broadcaster, Bridge News, to file early license renewal applications for its TV stations.

“We’ve been very clear that we’re holding broadcasters accountable to their obligations — not just public interest standards, but [equal employment opportunity] obligations,” Carr said, without commenting on Kimmel.

    Rarely used sanction

The FCC has only rarely denied broadcast license renewals. In 1975, however, the agency denied renewal of five radio station licenses after finding that the parent company’s owner instructed stations to provide favorable coverage of two men running for Senate, according to a research paper from Chad Raphael, a communications professor at Santa Clara University.

The National Association of Broadcasters said in a statement on Wednesday that the license renewal process must be grounded in “predictability, fairness, and transparency.”

The FCC’s “nearly unprecedented request for one company to quickly reapply for all of its licenses — rather than utilize its traditional enforcement process — runs contrary to these principles and creates significant uncertainty for all broadcasters,” the trade group said.

    High legal bar

The FCC can challenge broadcasters’ licensing in two ways. First, the agency can decline to renew a license, which involves a lengthy legal process during which the broadcaster can continue operating. Second, the FCC can revoke a license, a more severe sanction that effectively forces a broadcaster off the air.

The agency did not state in its order to Disney on Tuesday that it would take either measure. Yet while the FCC has the authority to revoke broadcast licenses, both actions face a high legal bar, Andrew Jay Schwartzman, a public interest lawyer specializing in media, told CBS News.

“There’s no way they would try to revoke the license. The legal standard is insurmountable,” he said. “Revocation places the entire burden on the FCC to demonstrate that the broadcaster is engaged in the most gross forms of abuse of rules and misconduct.”

Due to these guardrails, the FCC has almost never exercised its power to revoke a TV station’s license; Schwartzman notes that the last such case was several decades ago.

The FCC could also deny renewal of ABC’s broadcast licenses, which are granted for eight-year terms, legal experts said. Yet that also could require a nettlesome legal process that could drag on for years.

The agency would have to document how Disney’s diversity policies are discriminatory and present its case before an administrative law judge, said Robert Corn-Revere, chief counsel at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a nonprofit organization focused on protecting free speech. The judge would then have to issue a decision on each ABC station license, which could all be appealed.

Robert Corn-Revere, chief counsel at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a nonprofit organization focused on protecting free speech, said the FCC’s allegations of discrimination against Disney seem too flimsy to challenge ABC’s licenses.

“If they’re really just noticing issues on DEI, then they would not be able to get into the programming issues,” Corn-Revere said. “And if they do list programming issues, they buy themselves a whole lot of trouble under the First Amendment.”
