Trump to attend Army-Navy football game next month, officials say

Washington— President Trump is scheduled to attend the Army-Navy game, one of the longest rivalries in college football, U.S. officials told CBS News.

The stands at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Dec. 12 will be filled with active-duty troops and veterans.

Mr. Trump has made an appearance at the game several times as commander-in-chief, including last year. The game is known for its military flyovers and patriotism.

Mr. Trump has taken steps to give the Army-Navy game an exclusive television window so other college football games don’t compete with it.

White House spokespeople didn’t immediately comment.

The decision to attend the Army-Navy game comes as Republicans, including Vice President JD Vance, have blamed the Iran war as the reason the GOP suffered crushing losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Multiple sources on Wednesday told CBS News that the president has been asking advisers if Hegseth should stay in his job.

First lady Melania Trump and envoys from both Russia and Ukraine spoke from the White House on Thursday, hailing the ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Oleshky region as a potential “spark” for peace that lasts beyond a temporary regional ceasefire.

“We have chosen humanity over war,” the first lady said in a White House trilateral news conference with the two warring countries. “Undeniably, the lives of innocent people must transcend the division of war. I hope Oleshky inspires greater peace. Every significant transformation begins with a small spark.”

“Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire,” she added, calling Oleshky “a spark in a world of darkness capable of illuminating the best in humanity.”

Trump said she became aware of a humanitarian crisis in the region in September and directed her representative, Marc Beckman, to engage with Russia and Ukraine on her behalf. She said both countries agreed to work with her as an “exclusive intermediary” to establish a ceasefire in Oleshky and the surrounding Kherson region, deliver humanitarian aid and create a safe evacuation route for civilians.

Her remarks were followed by comments from Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who said Russian President Vladimir Putin appreciated President Donald Trump’s efforts to stop the fighting.

“President Putin also appreciates President Trump’s peacemaking effort and his team working on a peace plan to resolve Ukrainian crisis,” Dmitriev said in a rare moment of a Russian diplomat speaking at the White House. “President Trump has asked President Putin to support a number of initiatives on exchanging of prisoners, on releasing U.S. prisoners on humanitarian efforts. And President Putin supported those ideas and those initiatives.”

“And it’s very important that cooperation between Russia and Ukraine and Russia in the United States matters not only for our two nations, but for the entire world,” he continued. “Let us continue making great humanitarian contributions. We can together, let us build a future of peace, partnership and prosperity for the benefit of our families, our children and future generations.”

David Arakhamia, the leader of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s political party, called Melania Trump’s ceasefire the ‘biggest de-escalation since 2022,” when the war began.

Peace is now a matter of when, not if, he added.

Getting fearful Ukrainians out of the Russian-controlled city is an important step toward deciding how peace will be made and determining the long-term fate of the occupied territory of southern Ukraine.

“On the first day, people in the area did not believe it was happening,” Arakhamia said. “They stayed in their homes, waiting to see if the clock was ticking backward. The next day, they started walking around their homes. The day after that, they came to see their broken homes and find their belongings.

“This is really emotional to watch and supervise, to understand what we are doing,” he added. “I think we are creating momentum where both sides are learning the little mechanics of how to keep the peace when the peace comes.

“I would also like to sincerely thank you, from my heart, for doing this.”

Dmitriev attended the event and met with U.S. officials, sources told Reuters. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, also attended the event.

Harmeet Dhillon, controversial head of Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, resigns

Washington— Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, resigned on Thursday, Attorney General Todd Blanche said.

“Today, I accepted the resignation of Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who led the Civil Rights Division with conviction the past 18 months,” Blanche wrote in a post on X. “She has defended the civil liberties of every American and enforced the law without fear or favor. The Department is grateful for her dedicated public service, and we wish her every success in her future endeavors.”

Dhillon oversaw a mass exodus from the Civil Rights Division last year, with more than 75% of its staff departing. She upended many of the division’s traditional priorities that focused on combating discrimination against some of the nation’s most vulnerable and historically marginalized groups.

Since taking over the division, often lauded as being the “crown jewel” of the DOJ, she has reoriented it to focus instead on other priorities that have included protecting gun owners’ rights, curbing the use of equity, diversity and inclusion policies at universities, and adopting legal positions that oppose civil rights protections for transgender people.

During her tenure, the Justice Department closed many of its cases involving discrimination targeting Black Americans and announced it had dismissed more than 50 decades-old consent decrees with public schools, many in the Deep South, that were in place to protect Black students from unlawful discrimination.

Dhillon nixed two pending consent decrees last year with the Minneapolis and Louisville Police Departments over systemic abuses that were investigated in the wake of the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and rescinded the investigative findings of misconduct into six other police departments.

Earlier this year, after immigration agents shot and killed American citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis as they were protesting the administration’s immigration crackdown, the Civil Rights Division did not move to open any criminal civil rights investigations, in violation of longstanding practice for such high-profile officer-involved shootings.

The division ultimately got involved in the Pretti case after the Justice Department faced staunch criticism and questions about why Homeland Security Investigations — and not the FBI — was leading the probe into its own agency.

To date, no charges have been filed in the Pretti case, which is also separately under investigation by state officials.

Stacey Young, a former Civil Rights Division attorney who founded the nonprofit advocacy group Justice Connection, called Dhillon “the most destructive, lawless, and hateful head of the Civil Rights Division in DOJ history” in a statement on Thursday.

“Americans’ civil rights don’t enforce themselves. For almost 70 years, the Civil Rights Division brought to fruition the civil rights laws that Americans demanded. Dhillon decimated it.”

Dhillon, a staunch ally of President Trump who for years ran her own law firm in San Francisco, is a frequent guest on conservative podcasts and a very active poster on social media.

Unlike her predecessors, she frequently took to X to post her own videos about the work that her division was undertaking. She acknowledged in media interviews that she often generated ideas for civil rights investigations based on various posts she encountered on social media.

She has sometimes announced the opening of civil rights investigations online, a stark departure from historical practice. She also handed out challenge coins to fellow DOJ attorneys with the term “FAFO” (“f*** around and find out”) printed on them.

One of the areas where she has been the most vocal has been voting rights.

Under her leadership, the Civil Rights Division filed 31 lawsuits against primarily blue states and the District of Columbia in an effort to gain access to unredacted voter rolls.

Lawyers from the division repeatedly argued that they needed the information to ensure states were complying with two federal voting laws that require them to maintain clean voter lists. However, they later admitted in court that the Justice Department intended to share the information with the Department of Homeland Security so they could use it for criminal and immigration enforcement purposes.

So far, the Justice Department has lost 27 of those cases.

During the midterm elections on Tuesday, the Civil Rights Division sent out more than 1,000 monitors to polling sites across the country, a record number that required the Justice Department to solicit volunteers from unusual parts of the DOJ, including the Bureau of Prisons and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

However, in more recent weeks, Dhillon has been noticeably less involved in the effort.

She did not appear at an election integrity briefing at DOJ for journalists, and the Office of Deputy Attorney General, who does not have oversight authority on civil rights, solicited election monitor volunteers, according to a Sept. 10 memo seen by CBS News. Historically, that program is run directly by the Civil Rights Division.

A senior Justice Department official denied that the election integrity work had been taken away from Dhillon when asked at the briefing, saying the department was spreading around resources due to the increase in the workload.

“I don’t agree that anything has shifted away from Harmeet. I think she’s as busy as the rest of us. We’re spreading the wealth,” the official said.

Harmeet Dhillon has resigned from her post as the head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, making her the first senior official to leave the administration since the midterms.

Attorney General Todd Blanche announced her resignation in a social media post, saying that she has “led the Civil Rights Division with conviction.”

“She has defended the civil liberties of every American and enforced the law without fear or favor,” Blanche wrote on X. “The Department is grateful for her dedicated public service, and we wish her every success in her future endeavors.”

In her year and a half as Assistant Attorney General, Dhillon upended the division in an attempt to reshape its work to fit into the Trump era — shifting from its traditional work enforcing laws encouraging elections access and police reform to fighting what she has called “woke ideology.”

In recent weeks, Dhillon, a former legal adviser to President Donald Trump’s campaign, appeared increasingly sidelined as the department pursued a series of high-profile election-related legal cases of high interest to the president.

“Where’s Harmeet?” asked one GOP official working on some of the legal cases the department pursued to try to support Trump’s claims of Democrats trying to steal the election.

Dhillon took on a high profile albeit non-traditional presence on social media, announcing initiatives alongside her love of knitting, while embracing right-wing causes, including opening a section dedicated to the Second Amendment and promoting gun ownership.

She leaves behind a division faltering due to a lack of staffing — more than 75% of the Civil Rights Division was fired or quit during her term. She recruited several conservative lawyers to join the division in their place, but those hires have far from made up for the ouster of decades of knowledge on civil rights laws.

In fact, the gutting of the Civil Rights Division was part of the problem for Dhillon because some conservatives complained that inexperienced lawyers in her section weren’t able to handle cases referred to her division.

Dhillon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dhillon’s departure was all but guaranteed to come in the days following the election, when Democrats took control of the House and Senate. Her control over the Civil Rights Division had been declining for months, officials familiar with the matter said, in part because of her repeated losses in court and the perception among colleagues that she was good at announcing initiatives and less effective at accomplishing them.

The largest losses Dhillon suffered in court were over her attempts to gain access to voter rolls. Judges across the country tossed lawsuits that Dhillon claimed would help states “clean” their rolls of non-citizens, sharply criticizing what they saw as an effort to use the law to disenfranchise voters or access their personal data.

Dhillon was increasingly sidelined from the department’s voting efforts as the midterms approached, sources told CNN. As the election approached, it was Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter who signed on to the highest profile lawsuits, not Dhillon.

Stanley Woodward, Associate Attorney General, with whom Dhillon had a strained relationship, took the lead appearing in court defending the administration’s legal moves.

Still, other efforts she spearheaded came with mixed success. She sent letters to and filed lawsuits against universities she accused of antisemitism and discrimination largely against white students, for example, but those efforts rarely resulted in a court win — or even in a lawsuit at all.

Some of the universities committed to help root out antisemitism, but sources have told CNN there was little framework or follow up from the department at all.

Democrat Aaron Ford won the Nevada governor’s race, CBS News projects, defeating incumbent Gov. Joe Lombardo as the state struggled because of tariffs and a decline in tourism.

Ford, who has been elected statewide twice as attorney general, will be Nevada’s first Black governor and the first Black governor elected in a state west of the Mississippi.

Lombardo, a moderate Republican who was first elected in 2022, had a massive war chest, but was unable to overcome the challenges stemming from the state’s economic woes. Nevada’s largest city, Las Vegas, is driven by tourism and has seen a dropoff in international tourists under President Trump, particularly from Canada. Nevada has also been hit hard by tariffs.

Mr. Trump won Nevada by three points in 2024, the first Republican presidential candidate to win the state since 2004.

Although Lombardo touted his successes with the Democratic-led state legislature, Ford successfully tied him to national Republicans and Mr. Trump. According to an October poll by Noble Predictive Insights, 58% of Nevada residents disapprove of Mr. Trump’s performance.

Democrats racked up stunning wins across the country on Tuesday, including Nevada, where Democrats flipped the 2nd District that encompasses the northern part of the state.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., did not answer Fox News Digital’s questions about their potential first moves in Congress after the Democrats won back the majority in both chambers with sweeping victories in Tuesday’s elections.

Schumer was pressed on whether he plans to abolish the filibuster as speculation grows that Democrats could eliminate the filibuster after President Donald Trump urged Senate Republicans to terminate it numerous times to pass the SAVE America Act.

Trump previously warned that if Republicans didn’t act on it, the Democrats would if given the opportunity, which they now have.

Schumer ignored the question after being asked twice by Fox News Digital if he plans to eliminate it.

Some Democrats have previously signaled openness to eliminating the filibuster if they regained the Senate.

During a news conference Wednesday morning, Schumer also refused to answer questions about some of his plans for the Senate as Democrats take back the majority, including eliminating the filibuster.

He also said he will be “re-elected as majority leader” by the Senate Democratic caucus despite opposition from newly elected Democrats. He quickly redirected the conversation to focus on the blue wave in the midterm elections and what the party plans to do with the “generational remake of the Senate map.”

Jeffries was also asked by Fox News Digital about the looming question over whether Democrats will probe Elon Musk after the party has begun eyeing targets in discussed efforts to investigate alleged corruption in the Trump administration.

Jeffries gave Fox News Digital a thumbs-up when approached but did not respond when asked whether House Democrats would investigate Musk.

The House minority leader’s refusal to comment comes as Democrats are divided over whether they would select Jeffries as speaker of the house.

There was a petition started that has received over 550,000 to oust Jeffries from leading the House, arguing the party needs a speaker that represents “the Democratic voters, not just the Democratic establishment.”

With many of the newly elected congressional candidates hesitant, or outright opposed, to backing both Jeffries and Schumer as leaders, the decision over who will be the leaders of both chambers of Congress is still in limbo.

Democratic socialist Nithya Raman will defeat incumbent Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayor’s race, CNN’s Decision Desk projects.

Raman, a city councilmember, overtook Republican Spencer Pratt in June’s nonpartisan primary to set up what was arguably a tougher race for Bass, a Democratic former congresswoman. With Raman’s victory, the nation’s two largest cities — New York and Los Angeles — will be led by democratic socialists next year.

Raman has vowed to cut street homelessness in half before Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Olympics.

Her victory highlights the continued ascendance of the Democratic Party’s progressive insurgency. Since last year, democratic socialists have won the mayor’s offices in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and Seattle.

In Los Angeles, Raman’s win ends the tenure of a 73-year-old fixture of the party’s establishment who made history in the State Assembly in 2008 when she became the first Black woman to become speaker of any state legislative body in US history.

The ideological and factional battles that played out in the Los Angeles race will soon expand nationwide, as the 2028 Democratic presidential primary gets underway in the coming months and the party’s leaders and voters debate whether what worked in mayoral races in deep-blue cities can succeed nationally.

The victory by Raman, 45, is a harsh blow to the Los Angeles political establishment, including most major unions, which had rallied behind Bass.

The outcome reflects the lingering anger at how Bass managed the fallout from the 2025 wildfires, as well as voters seeking new approaches to entrenched issues like housing costs and homelessness.

Those were the same issues that animated Pratt’s campaign during the primary, when he earned 25.5% of the vote — about 3.5 percentage points behind Raman for second place. The two outsiders combining for more than 54% of the vote, though, underscored the difficulty Bass would face in winning a second term.

Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez wins reelection in competitive Washington race

Washington — Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez won a third term in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, CBS News projected.

Gluesenkamp Perez’s victory, in a district President Trump has won three times, comes as she’s flexed her independence over party loyalty. Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives in January, with stunning wins across the country.

The congresswoman beat Republican state Sen. John Braun to win reelection in the rural district in the southwestern corner of the state. Braun, the top Republican in the Washington state Senate, was a more mainstream Republican than Gluesenkamp Perez’s prior opponent, far-right conservative Joe Kent, who went on to become Mr. Trump’s counterterrorism chief before resigning in protest over the Iran war. But Braun, who was endorsed by Mr. Trump, also distanced himself from the president on some issues, including on tariffs, the Iran war and affirming that Joe Biden won the 2020 election.

Though Gluesenkamp Perez angered her Democratic colleagues in September by helping Republicans on two party-line procedural votes that were struggling to pass, her win is a relief to Democrats, who needed to hold the highly competitive seat in their quest to retake the House majority.

Though House Democratic leaders initially called the split “a significant breach of trust” that “necessitates a serious response,” the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee — which is controlled by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York — continued to back Gluesenkamp Perez. In a coordinated ad with the DCCC in October, Gluesenkamp Perez said, “I don’t answer to any political party or any president. I answer to you.”

At a district event in September, Gluesenkamp Perez emphasized her loyalty to her community as she referenced her occasional defections.

“We have no form of representative democracy if we do not represent our districts, if we don’t stand for a working waterfront, if we don’t stand for people working in the trades, if we don’t stand for right-to-repair, if we don’t stand for our Ukrainian countrymen, we have nothing,” she said. “All of democracy is predicated on representative government. That’s the point.”

Braun also sought to put space between himself and GOP leaders during the campaign.

While not criticizing the president directly on his handling of the Iran war, Braun said during an Oct. 13 debate, “I will not and I do not support a war without clear objectives and without a clear ending point.”

“I think Congress has a very important role here — one they should exercise,” he said.

Braun also lamented Congress ceding its powers to the president, especially its control over federal government spending and the ability to declare war.

“We have to take power back,” he said.

On tariffs, Braun said, “with our allies, indiscriminate use of tariffs is not helpful and ultimately lead to an increase of prices for manufacturers and consumers.” He called the administration’s handling of immigration enforcement a “mixed bag.”
