    https://www.cbsnews.com/video/measles-cases-climb-to-nearly-60-at-university-in-florida-as-outbreaks-surge-across-us/

Why a deadly, massive measles outbreak in Bangladesh has some U.S. health experts concerned

A measles outbreak in Bangladesh that has killed almost 400 people is spreading fast, and health experts say it could carry risks even for the U.S., where cases of the disease are already at levels not seen in decades as vaccination rates continue to fall.

Most of those killed by the measles outbreak in Bangladesh in recent weeks have been children. The country’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) says the number of suspected cases has surged to over 56,000, with regional media outlets saying many hospitals across the country are overwhelmed.

That number of suspected cases has more than doubled since the beginning of April.

CBS News has asked Bangladesh’s public health minister Dr. M A Muhit to comment on the country’s handling of the outbreak, but there was no response from his office by the time of publication.

Local news outlets have shown images of overcrowded hospitals, with some patients receiving treatment on floors due to a lack of beds . Aid agencies report that many of the infected are children who were either too young to be vaccinated or were only partially vaccinated.

“There has been a change in the vaccine supply by the government, which has led to delays and a three-year immunity gap,” Miguel Mateos Muñoz, with the United Nations children’s charity UNICEF in Bangladesh, told CBS News. “To be effective there should be two doses of the vaccine, but we are seeing children who have received either only one dose of the vaccine or no vaccine at all.”

What is measles and why is it dangerous?

Measles is among the most contagious viruses in the world. It is spread human-to-human relatively easily, most often by droplets that can hang in the air for hours when an infected individual coughs or sneezes.

If an unvaccinated person is exposed, there is about a 90% chance of them contracting an infection. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable, and the disease can lead to pneumonia symptoms, brain swelling, permanent disability and in a relatively low number of cases, death.

“An infected person can spread measles to others even before knowing they have the disease,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which says people with the virus can spread it “from 4 days before through 4 days after” the trademark blotchy rash associated with the disease appears.

The World Health Organization notes that there is no specific antiviral treatment for measles, and while most people recover within two or three weeks, “measles can lead to complications such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, secondary ear infection, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), blindness, and death.”

“About two or three deaths may occur for every 1,000 reported cases,” according to the WHO, which estimates that nearly 100,000 people died from the virus in 2024, despite the availability of effective vaccines.

Measles has spread quickly through Bangladesh’s densely populated cities and refugee camps, and as UNICEF’s Muñoz explained, there’s concern that it could spread further.

“Measles has been detected in 58 out of the 64 districts in Bangladesh, so it is across most of the country, and this is a country with movements across porous borders to neighboring countries,” he told CBS News.

Cause for concern in the U.S.

The CDC has warned repeatedly that overseas outbreaks pose a direct risk to Americans’ health because measles travels so easily across borders. The agency says measles anywhere can pose a threat everywhere, especially to populations with a vaccination coverage rate below 95%.

While measles vaccines have been available and widely administered in the U.S. since the 1960s, that 95% threshold is no longer being met uniformly across the country.

As of May 7, the CDC had recorded 1,842 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. since the beginning of the year, spread across 39 states and jurisdictions. Nearly 93% of those cases were linked to outbreaks, not isolated travel cases. By comparison, the U.S. recorded just 285 cases in all of 2024. In 2025, that case load soared to 2,288, the highest total since 1991.

Most of the people infected in the U.S. have been unvaccinated children or individuals with an unknown vaccination status, according to the agency.

CDC data show uptake of the combined MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination among U.S. kindergartners has dropped from about 95% before the COVID-19 pandemic, to as low as 92% nationally, leaving hundreds of thousands of children vulnerable.

County level research published last year by Johns Hopkins University showed vaccination rates declining in 78% of the 2,066 U.S. counties where data was gathered.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/video/measles-cases-climb-to-nearly-60-at-university-in-florida-as-outbreaks-surge-across-us/

U.S. authorities only declared measles officially eliminated in 2000, meaning the virus is no longer spreading continuously within the country. But that status is now at risk.

Public health researchers and the Kaiser Family Foundation warn that ongoing outbreaks could lead to more than 12 months of uninterrupted transmission — a threshold that, if crossed, would mean measles was no longer technically eliminated in the U.S.

Canada lost its measles elimination status in late 2025 after a surge in cases not dissimilar to what the U.S. is seeing now.

The CDC says most U.S. outbreaks begin when an unvaccinated traveler brings the virus home from a country experiencing a large outbreak.

According to the CDC, Mexico, Guatemala, parts of South Asia (where Bangladesh is) and Africa are experiencing worrying outbreaks.

CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Céline Gounder said Monday that this summer will bring a major challenge for U.S. health officials as thousands of fans visit for the soccer World Cup championship, which is being jointly hosted by the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

“My biggest concern for the World Cup is actually measles. It’s not hantavirus, it is not Ebola. Measles is what has me concerned,” Gounder said, noting outbreaks of the highly infectious disease “in different parts of the world.”

“We ourselves could be the source of the outbreak, because we have low levels of vaccination in certain pockets of the country, so that is my biggest concern,” she said.

    Racing the clock in Bangladesh

There is hope that Bangladesh can get its outbreak under control, UNICEF’s Muñoz said.

Bangladesh’s government, supported by UNICEF and the U.N.’s World Health Organization, has launched an emergency measles vaccination campaign.

“A rapid emergency vaccine campaign has been underway since the 5th May, and it has already reached its target of vaccinating 18 million children,” he told CBS News.

He said to prevent future outbreaks, and keep them from spreading around the globe, “the most important thing is to restore immunisation.”

FIRST ON FOX: Under the U.S. Constitution, anyone who is not a “natural-born citizen” is barred from becoming president or vice president.

Now, a House Republican wants to expand that requirement to much of the federal government.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., plans to introduce a joint resolution Wednesday proposing a constitutional amendment requiring members of Congress, federal judges and other Senate-confirmed appointees to be natural-born citizens.

The proposal would affect more than a dozen naturalized citizens currently serving in Congress, including several Republicans.

TRUMP’S BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP CRUSADE DRAWS BACKING FROM COHORT OF PROMINENT LEGAL SCHOLARS

Mace, who is running to be South Carolina’s next governor, suggested that the country’s nearly 25 million naturalized citizens, who made the deliberate choice to become Americans, may have divided loyalties.

“If you hold power in the American government, you should be a natural-born American citizen,” Mace told Fox News Digital in a statement. “For too long we have allowed foreign-born members to hold seats in this government, while making clear their loyalty is not here. We see it every day.”

Mace specifically called out progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who was born in Somalia and became a naturalized citizen in 2000.

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6396132994112

“Ilhan Omar is just one of many foreign-born members of this government who have made clear, time and again, their loyalty is not here,” Mace said. “The American people deserve leaders who put America first. This amendment closes a gap in our Constitution long overdue for closing.”

Omar’s path to U.S. citizenship has also faced heightened scrutiny from Republicans in recent months.

Vice President JD Vance said Tuesday that Omar is under investigation by the Department of Justice for possible immigration fraud. Some Republicans have called for her deportation over the alleged offense.

A spokesperson for Omar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: OMAR’S LONG HISTORY OF CONTROVERSY KEEPS HER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Mace’s proposal faces steep odds of becoming part of the Constitution, requiring a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress before ratification by three-fourths of U.S. states. Amendments can also be proposed through a constitutional convention requested by two-thirds of state legislatures, though that method has never been used successfully.

There are 19 foreign-born members of Congress, though some are natural-born citizens due to having at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen.

Under Mace’s proposal, Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, an ally of President Donald Trump who was born in Colombia and became a U.S. citizen at 18, could no longer serve in Congress.

The same restriction would apply to Reps. Juan Ciscomani, R-Ariz., Young Kim, R-Calif., and Victoria Spartz, R-Ind., who became naturalized citizens after immigrating to the United States from Mexico, South Korea and Ukraine, respectively.

On the Democratic side, Reps. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., Ted Lieu and Robert Garcia, D-Calif., and Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., are among the lawmakers who would be affected.

Former Trump Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, the wife of Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Alejandro Mayorkas, former President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security secretary, also would have been ineligible to serve in Cabinet posts under the proposal.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

A retired Tennessee law enforcement officer who was held in jail for more than a month after police arrested him over a Facebook post of a meme related to the assassination of Charlie Kirk has settled a “unlawful incarceration” lawsuit for $835,000.

Under the deal announced Wednesday, Larry Bushart, agreed to drop the five-month-old case alleging that his constitutional rights were violated when officials in Perry County, Tennessee, held him in jail for 37 days last fall.

“I am pleased my First Amendment rights have been vindicated,” Bushart said in a statement Wednesday. “The people’s freedom to participate in civil discourse is crucial to a healthy democracy.”

The case, which Bushart brought with the help of lawyers from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, had been set to go to trial in late July before a federal jury in Memphis. He had not asked for a specific amount of money in the lawsuit.

Bushart’s lawyers said in court papers last year that their client, who is the primary breadwinner for his house, lost his post-retirement job because of his time in jail and that the episode had stifled his “participation in online political conversation because he is afraid that something like his arrest and incarceration might happen to him again.”

His legal woes first started 10 days after Kirk, a longtime supporter of President Donald Trump who worked to get him reelected in 2024, was fatally shot during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University on September 10.

Bushart shared a meme on Facebook about a vigil being held in Tennessee for Kirk.

STREAMING NOW CNN Examine the events leading to Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension from ABC

“This seems relevant today,” read the meme, which included a photo of Trump and a quote the then-candidate made in 2024 following a shooting at Perry High School in Des Moines, Iowa.

“We have to get over it,” Trump is quoted as saying in the meme, regarding the high school shooting.

Four officers came to Bushart’s home the next day, arrested him and took him to jail for “threatening mass violence at a school.” Authorities at the time said that the post was understood locally to be a threat to an area school that has a similar name to the one where the 2024 shooting occurred, according to court records.

Bushart was held behind bars for 37 days because he was unable to pay the $2 million bond imposed on him. In late October, a district attorney in Tennessee moved to drop the single charge brought against him, and he was subsequently released.

His lawsuit charged Perry County; Nick Weems, the county’s sheriff; and Jason Morrow, a county investigator involved in the probe into Bushart, with a series of constitutional infringements, including violations of his free speech rights and his Fourth Amendment right against “wrongful arrest, wrongful prosecution, and wrongful incarceration.”

Under the settlement, the county, Weems and Morrow are not admitting any wrongdoing in last year’s ordeal. The county’s insurer will pay the settlement.

“As Sheriff, there is no responsibility I take more seriously than protecting the children in our community, who are some of the most vulnerable among us,” Weems said a joint statement released as part of the settlement. “Ensuring their safety is not just a duty of this office, it is a commitment I carry with me every single day. I am happy to have this matter resolved, and I look forward to continuing to serve and protect the people of Perry County.”

F-16 fighters intercept plane that entered restricted airspace over D.C.

F-16 fighter planes intercepted a civilian plane that entered restricted airspace above Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, safely escorting it from the area, military officials said.

The aircraft entered the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area Special Flight Rules Area, or DC SFRA, around 11:15 a.m., North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a news release. F-16s were dispatched by the Continental U.S. NORAD Region, the agency said.

The F-16s “intercepted the aircraft and ensured it remained clear of restricted airspace without further incident,” NORAD said.

The restricted area is a circular zone of about 33 miles around the city, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Pilots flying within the area must have obtained specific clearance from FAA air traffic control, have a specific transponder and call sign, and be in direct contact with air traffic control.

Any plane flying within the area that does not meet those specifications will be escorted from the region, according to the FAA. NORAD said it uses “a layered defense network of radars, satellites, and fighter aircraft to identify and respond to potential threats,” including civilian aircraft that are not cleared to enter the zone.

Inside the DC SFRA is the Flight-Restricted Zone, a smaller region that includes Reagan National Airport. Only government aircraft and commercial planes coming in and out of the airport can operate in this area without a waiver, according to the FAA.

Interceptions of civilian planes in restricted airspace are not uncommon. In the past year, multiple planes were intercepted for entering temporarily restricted airspace near Mar-a-Lago while President Trump was at the Florida resort. Over a dozen similar incidents occurred at Mr. Trump’s Bedminster golf club in summer 2025. Temporary flight restriction zones are routinely issued by NORAD to protect the president when he is not in Washington, D.C.

In 2023, two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept an unresponsive Cessna aircraft as it trespassed into restricted airspace over D.C. CBS affiliate WUSA-TV reported that the jets created a sonic boom that was heard by residents across the region.

    image

    image

    image

Barney Frank, liberal icon who regulated a ‘too big’ financial industry, dies at 86

Barney Frank, the barrier-breaking former Congressman who helped draft reforms that sought to rein in an unruly financial industry in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis, has died. He was 86.

His sister Doris Breay confirmed his death to CNN, saying, “he was a wonderful brother. I was lucky to be his sister. I will miss him.”

Frank entered hospice care earlier this year where he underwent treatment for congestive heart failure, according to media reports.

The former congressman built a reputation on Capitol Hill for being an outspoken progressive stalwart. He was also the first member of Congress to voluntarily come out as gay. Frank’s decision to publicly disclose his sexuality in 1987 made him the most prominent gay man in Washington during the height of the AIDS epidemic.

While many thought it could be a political career-ender at the time, Frank would later say he regretted he did not come out sooner.

“I am a much better openly gay man than I was a closeted one,” he told Men’s Journal in a 2017 interview.

Frank advocated for LGBTQ causes throughout his career and was instrumental in helping repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy prohibiting gay servicemembers from openly serving in the military. In 2012, he became the first sitting member of Congress to marry a partner of the same sex while in office.

Legislatively, he made arguably his biggest mark in the world of finance. He became the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee in 2003, and in 2007, became the committee’s chairman. His position put him at the center of the congressional response to the subprime mortgage crisis that led to the greatest global financial meltdown since the Great Depression. Frank pushed for greater regulation of banks and stronger consumer protections to avoid a repeat of the debacle.

He also backed the federal bailout of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which included a line of credit the government sponsored entities could tap, if needed.

“We are putting the money there … saying we know that we’re taking steps so that they’re not going to face this problem in the future,” Frank told CNN in mid-July 2008.

“Fannie and Freddie suffered not from their own decisions, but from the bad mortgage decisions that have been made throughout the economy. We’re not going to have those in the future. So, it is not simply hoping, it is taking action to make it less likely that they’ll be the problem,” he said.

Frank was a chief architect of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which President Barack Obama signed into law in 2010.

Dodd-Frank established the framework for banking regulation and consumer protection as we know them today. The law’s aim was to introduce greater oversight of financial institutions, especially those judged to be “too big to fail.” It established new liquidity requirements and stress tests for banks; as well as the Volcker Rule, which limits banks’ ability to make risky investments with customer deposits.

Dodd-Frank also created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which was charged with preventing financial abuse and standing up for consumers in the financial sector.

Since then, many Dodd-Frank provisions have been challenged in court and in Congress, and Republicans have sought to roll back many financial services regulations, including dismantling the CFPB.

With a larger-than-life personality, Frank’s sharp tongue and sarcastic wit made him sought after by journalists and, even after his retirement from Congress in 2013, a regular on the political talk show circuit. His autobiography was published in 2015, and another book, “The Hard Path to Unity: Why We Must Reform the Left to Rescue Democracy,”is scheduled to be released later this year.

His frequent TV appearances made Frank a recognizable figure in American politics, and he continued to be vocal well into his 80s.

In a recent interview on CNN, Frank had criticized the Democratic Party for not being strategic with their messaging on social issues and for not focusing on more centrist positions.

He told CNN’s Jake Tapper progressives “make a mistake by taking the most controversial parts of the agenda and turning them into litmus tests.”
