Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles announce charges against Indian organized criminal group “Bishnoi”

    2026-07-07 14:07:21 EDT / CBS News

    By

Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles on Tuesday announced criminal charges against the prominent leader and eight associates of the Indian organized criminal group known as “Bishnoi,” tying them to the 2023 assassination of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada.

The indictment accuses Lawrence Bishnoi and another defendant of ordering the killing of “H.S.N.” — the apparent initials for Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was gunned down on June 18, 2023, near a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia.

Nijjar was a well-known political dissident who advocated for the creation of a Sikh homeland in northern India that would be known as “Khalistan.” India previously designated him a “terrorist” in connection with those advocacy efforts.

The indictment alleges that two other unnamed co-conspirators pulled the trigger that day, but that Bishnoi took responsibility for the act.

“On November 25, 2023, defendant Bishnoi claimed responsibility on behalf of the ‘Lawrence Bishnoi Group’ for a shooting that occurred on November 24, 2023 in Vancouver, Canada at the residence of R.G., a prominent Indian actor and singer, in an online post to Facebook that warned, in Punjabi, ‘no one can save you from us,’” the indictment says.

Bishnoi was arrested by Indian authorities in 2015. Despite this, the indictment says he continued to run a global crime syndicate.

“Using contraband cellphones and other voice over internet protocol devices smuggled into his jail cell, defendant Bishnoi personally directed political assassinations, murders, shootings, extortions, kidnappings, drug trafficking, human smuggling, and other crimes committed by members and associates of the Bishnoi OCG worldwide,” the indictment says.

He remains in custody in India.

Bishnoi’s childhood friend, Satinderjit Singh Brar, allegedly directed the group’s North American operations and is also accused in the indictment of ordering the assassination.

Shortly after Nijjar was murdered in 2023, another prominent Sikh separatist and close friend of Nijjar named Gurpatwant Singh Pannun was targeted for assassination in New York City, but the plot was thwarted by the FBI.

Both Canadian and American law enforcement authorities later alleged that the assassination of Nijjar and attempted assassination of Pannun were ordered at the behest of the Indian government itself.

In February, an Indian national named Nikhil Gupta pleaded guilty in a federal court in Manhattan to conspiring with former Indian government official Vikash Yadav to kill Pannun. Yadav remains at large.

In the indictment unsealed on Tuesday, Bishnoi, Singh Brar and seven other defendants associated with Bishnoi’s group are facing a variety of charges in connection with their alleged criminal enterprise — including racketeering, extortion and conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.

Federal prosecutors also announced criminal charges in two other indictments related to organized crime by Indian groups, including the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Organized Crime Group and the Dhanda Drug Trafficking Organization.

A federal judge blocked a grand jury subpoena for information about 2020 election workers in Georgia, a rebuff to the Justice Department’s investigation into how the election was handled in the Atlanta-area.

The Georgia election had been a frequent target of President Donald Trump’s election-rigging claims.

US District Judge William Ray called the breadth of the subpoena seeking information about Fulton County election workers “staggering. He said that the use of the subpoena power to investigate the 2020 election was not legitimate, given the statute of limitations for any potential crime.

“In this Court’s view, the DOJ does not possess a need to enforce the Subpoena greater than the burden of disclosure on Fulton County, and as such, the Court will not enforce it,” he said.

Former Democratic mayor of state capital city pleads guilty for role in six-figure real estate bribery scheme

Hinds County DA Jody Owens, also a Democrat, had already pleaded guilty after funneling over $80,000 in corrupt payments

    July 7, 2026 2:36pm EDT / Fox News

Chokwe Antar Lumumba, the former mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of conspiracy for his role in a six-figure real estate bribery scheme.

Lumumba, who served as Jackson’s mayor from 2017 to 2025, allegedly accepted tens of thousands of dollars that Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens distributed to him and other city officials after accepting it from FBI agents posing as realtors.

Owens, also a Democrat, pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy last week.

Owens, according to a copy of the criminal indictment obtained by Fox News Digital, funneled over $80,000 in payments to Lumumba, Angelique Lee, the Democratic former vice president of the Jackson City Council, and Sherik Marve Smith, a relative of Owens’.

The former district attorney procured the money from two individuals he believed to be real estate developers from Nashville, Tennessee, “in exchange for their agreement to take official action to ensure the approval of the Developers’ proposed multi-million-dollar downtown Jackson development project,” per the indictment.

The developers, however, were actually undercover FBI agents.

Owens “solicited and accepted at least $115,000 in cash and promises of future financial benefits from the Developers,” according to the indictment.

Lumumba accepted $50,000 in the form of campaign contributions knowing they were given in exchange for his blessing on the real estate developments, the indictment alleges.

“Lumumba accepted the checks knowing and understanding that the money was from the Developers, and that it was being offered in exchange for official action from Lumumba in favor of the Developers’ proposed development project,” the indictment read.

Senate GOP leaders say they’ve spoken with Mitch McConnell as speculation about his health continues

    July 7, 2026 / 2:29 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Senate GOP leaders said Tuesday they spoke with Sen. Mitch McConnell amid a weekslong hospitalization that has sparked growing speculation about his health.

A spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the South Dakota Republican and McConnell spoke on Monday by phone and “had a lengthy and substantive conversation that covered a variety of topics, including national security.” And the No. 2 Republican, Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, spoke to McConnell by phone Tuesday afternoon for around 20 minutes, a spokeswoman said.

“Senator McConnell was fully engaged and is eager to get back to the Senate,” Barrasso spokeswoman Kate Noyes said in a statement.

The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican has been hospitalized since June 14, his office said. On the same day, emergency medical personnel responded to an unconscious person at McConnell’s home, according to a public EMS dispatch call reviewed by CBS News last week.

During the call, a dispatcher called in a “cardiac arrest” and a medic said there was “CPR in progress” at McConnell’s address. The dispatcher also said an individual was “unconscious.” The senator’s name is not mentioned during the EMS call, and CBS News has not confirmed the identity of the unconscious person.

McConnell’s staff has neither confirmed that the dispatch call was about the senator nor provided more information about why he was admitted to the hospital.

His office last issued a statement on July 2 that said the senator was still hospitalized.

“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” the statement said. “The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”

Thune said last month that he had spoken to McConnell following his hospitalization. On June 15, he told reporters that McConnell “sounded good” and “wants to be back.” The next day, Thune told Fox News that McConnell “was in good spirits.” He also said McConnell indicated that “he’d be back soon.”

Supreme Court justices to make rare appearance before Congress

Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett, a liberal and a conservative, are set to testify before a House subcommittee next Tuesday.

    By Julian Mark

Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett will testify before Congress next Tuesday, a rare appearance before a coequal branch that comes just weeks after the court wrapped up a contentious and consequential term.

It’s the first time since 2019 — when Justices Kagan and Samuel A. Alito Jr. appeared side by side — that members of the high court will testify before a committee on Capitol Hill. (Justice Clarence Thomas was spotted on the Hill just last week, but he did not appear to be testifying before lawmakers.)

Kagan, a liberal, and Barrett, a conservative, will appear before the House Appropriations subcommittee that approves funding for the court. The court has requested a $20.6 million budget increase for fiscal 2027, including a $14.6 million increase to bulk up security for the justices at work and a $2 million boost in security for their homes.

Judicial security is a sensitive topic in a highly polarized political moment that has seen more threats and attacks against judges.

The joint appearance comes as the court’s conservative and liberal factions increasingly aim spicy language at each other, although Kagan and Barrett are not among the court’s biggest fire-breathers.

While the hearing will focus on budget matters, House members have latitude to stray from the subject at hand, and they could fire off questions on any number of controversial topics.

The high court just ended a highly significant term that included a decision giving President Donald Trump greater power over federal agencies. It’s unclear whether the court’s recent rulings will come up, but in 2019 Kagan and Alito faced questions about a possible court ethics code and whether its hearings should be televised.

The Maine race Democrats can’t afford to lose is falling apart

A sexual assault allegation against Graham Platner has thrown Democrats’ Maine strategy into turmoil.

    Analysis by Amber Phillips

To take back the Senate, Democrats almost certainly need to beat Sen. Susan Collins (R) in Maine. Yet their candidate, Graham Platner, is under pressure from party leaders to drop out after a sexual assault allegation leveled at him this week by a woman he previously dated — an allegation he denies.

“We needed everything to go just exactly perfectly to be able to flip the Senate,” said senior Democratic strategist Jim Manley, “and this isn’t going to help.”

Here’s why Maine matters and what Democrats can still do.

Why Maine matters so much to Democrats

Republicans hold a 53-47 Senate majority, meaning Democrats need an overall gain of four seats to take control. Because not every Senate seat is up for election in November, Democrats are facing some daunting challenges to win enough races to retake the majority.

Democrats need to defend seats in the competitive swing states of Michigan and Georgia, then beat Republicans in Maine and North Carolina, and then win at least two races in redder states such as Ohio, Alaska, Texas or Iowa.

Donald Trump won most of these states in the 2024 presidential race. In some states, such as Texas, Democrats haven’t won a Senate race in decades.

Maine is different. The state voted for Kamala Harris for president in 2024, and Democrats are trying to unseat Collins at a time when the Republican brand under Trump is deeply unpopular.

“There’s virtually no path back to the majority for Democrats without defeating … Collins,” wrote Jessica Taylor, who analyzes Senate and governor races for the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter.

How Democrats ended up with Platner as their nominee in such a crucial state

Platner already was facing allegations that he sent sexually explicit text messages to women while married, had volatile relationships with women and had a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol that he has since covered up.

Up until now he has been combative in the face of the allegations, acknowledging he went through a period of “darkness” when he returned from combat tours in Iraq. But his tone has changed with this sexual assault allegation.

Manley blamed the party’s populist wing for pushing Platner, a rural oyster farmer and Marine Corps veteran, when Gov. Janet Mills (D) was also running and had proved she could win statewide. (She dropped out just before the Democratic primary). Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) were some of Platner’s most high-profile supporters earlier this year.

Outsiders are certainly having a moment in Democratic politics; they’ve recently toppled sitting lawmakers in New York and Colorado in primaries. Some Democrats championed Platner’s roughness, saying voters found it fresh.

“The left was willing to overlook his obvious flaws,” Manley said, “and now it’s come to blow up in all of our faces.”

    What Democrats can do next

Platner denies the sexual assault allegation but said he was “mindful of the political reality” that the reporting will “inflict” on his campaign. It’s possible that he will drop out of the race.

It’s not clear who might replace him, my Washington Post colleagues report. One Democratic pollster said that hours after the revelations, she was approached about helping poll for potential replacements. Under Maine law, Platner has to decide on the race by Monday: withdraw and Democrats can slot in a replacement by July 27, or dig in and leave them running a wounded nominee against Collins.

It would be a huge forfeit for Democrats in an election season that had been lining up well for them. Several of Trump’s major policies are unpopular, including tariffs and his signature tax-and-spending law, which Senate Republicans helped pass.

“Even red states aren’t safe when you see a president whose numbers have dropped as much as Trump’s have,” Taylor said in an interview earlier this year.

Washington — Democrats are facing a rapidly closing window to replace Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner on the ballot amid a sexual assault allegation — if he decides to drop out.

At stake is one of the most closely watched and heavily contested Senate races of the year, as national Democrats seek to deny Republican Sen. Susan Collins a sixth term.

Platner is under immense pressure to drop out of the race from the Maine Democratic Party and top national Democrats, and a vow from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee not to invest in Platner. Support for his campaign collapsed shortly after a Maine woman he previously dated, Jenny Racicot, told Politico and CNN that Platner sexually assaulted her in 2021 — an allegation Platner denied Monday.

He’s remained in the race following earlier scandals, including allegations of sexually explicit texts and concerning behavior toward women, revelations that he had made problematic posts on Reddit and his admission that he once had a tattoo widely associated with a Nazi emblem. Platner has denied allegations of misconduct but apologized for many of his past comments, citing PTSD stemming from his military service.

    How could Platner be replaced?

Under state law, Platner has until next Monday, July 13, to withdraw from the race and remove his name from the general election ballot. If he withdraws before then, the Maine Democratic Party can replace him on the ballot, but it must make a decision by July 27 at 5 p.m.

“If a political party makes a replacement nomination for the general election by the deadline,” the law says, “the Secretary of State shall produce new general election ballots or amend or supplement general election ballots already printed.”

State law does not delineate how the party should choose a replacement. The Maine Democratic Party would likely gather party officials for a nominating convention of some form, said Dan Shea, a political science professor at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. But details on how that process would work or who would get to participate remain hazy — and the party will need to decide quickly.

“My guess is, they’ll do the best they can to make it open and democratic. So it’s going to be open and democratic and very efficient,” Shea told CBS News. “Those don’t usually go together.”

The Maine Democratic Party has not yet disclosed its plans for picking a new nominee. In a statement Tuesday, Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson said if a new nominee is needed, the process would be “open, transparent, and inclusive,” with “broad participation of Mainers and Democratic voters.”

In Maine politics, the sudden need to replace a nominee for statewide office appears to be unprecedented, Shea said. But national Democrats struggled with a similar dilemma two years ago, when former President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid and was replaced by then-Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I think Maine Democrats are keeping in mind some of the controversy surrounding the … very narrow process leading to Kamala Harris’s nomination — the very quick, truncated process,” Shea said.

    Who might replace Platner?

It’s unclear who the party might choose to replace Platner, who won last month’s primary with 72% of the vote. His top rival for the Democratic Senate nomination was outgoing Gov. Janet Mills, but she suspended her campaign before the primary election, and it’s not certain that the 78-year-old two-term governor is interested in reentering the fray or would be viewed as a top contender.

The Democratic primary for governor was far more crowded, and some watchers of Maine politics told CBS News a few of the candidates who came up short in that race could be near the top of the list to replace Platner as Senate nominee. Those candidates include Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former state Senate President Troy Jackson and former Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention Director Nirav Shah. Former state House Speaker Hannah Pingree won the gubernatorial primary.

Bellows, Jackson and Shah all called on Platner to drop out due to the sexual assault allegation.

Jackson — a former Platner ally whose gubernatorial bid was backed by independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont — told the Bangor Daily News that “if Graham’s stepping away, I am very, very interested and think I’m the best person to replace him.”

On Tuesday, Jackson filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to form a U.S. Senate exploratory committee, which allows Jackson to begin raising money and gauge support for a potential Senate run without formally declaring his candidacy. The news was first reported by the Bangor Daily News.

Shah has also shown interest in running, saying his team has “received hundreds of encouraging messages” in a statement that laid out parts of his platform. Shah argued a new Senate nominee should be chosen through a “transparent and open” process with at least one televised debate.

Other high-profile Maine Democrats include moderate Rep. Jared Golden, who has represented the red-leaning 2nd Congressional District since 2019 but decided not to run for reelection, along with state Sen. Joe Baldacci and former House staffer Jordan Wood, who both sought the Democratic nomination to replace Golden but lost to Auditor Matt Dunlap. (Baldacci has said he isn’t interested in replacing Platner.)

Some of the national progressive groups that supported Platner before the sexual assault accusation came to light have argued the next nominee should broadly share Platner’s politics and outsider image.

“To the Democratic establishment: this is not your opening,” Our Revolution Executive Director Joseph Geevarghese wrote Monday evening. The group, which has its roots in Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, specifically warned against picking a “status-quo candidate” like Mills.

Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, said in a statement Monday the Maine Democratic Party should nominate a “shake-up-the-system economic fighter who challenges powerful interests.” He added that the decision shouldn’t be left to a “small caucus of party insiders.”

But Baldacci argued on social media the new Democratic candidate “has to be someone who is independent minded from Platner, otherwise they will be viewed by voters as a protege.”

The Maine Democratic Party said Platner would have no role in choosing his replacement, writing: “In no scenario is there a legal possibility for a nominee to be selected by an individual campaign.”

Do Democrats still have a chance of beating Susan Collins?

The Democratic nominee will face Collins, a moderate Republican who has long vexed her opponents in the blue-leaning state, in November. In 2020, she defeated Democratic nominee Sara Gideon by an 8.6-point margin even as Biden won statewide in Maine by nine points, and six years earlier, Collins defeated Bellows by more than 30 points. Collins sits on the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, and her campaigns usually zero in on the federal funding that she has secured for Maine.

Ronald Schmidt, a political science professor at the University of Southern Maine, said he thinks Collins will be “very difficult to beat” regardless of the eventual Democratic nominee.

“Sen. Collins is very, very good at running for reelection,” said Schmidt. “She’s got a group of people who, although they aren’t necessarily in her party or … aren’t necessarily huge fans of hers, think she can do the job, and so they vote for her again and again and again.”

Schmidt believes Democrats could still mount a competitive challenge to Collins even if they need to swap out Platner at the last minute, though he said it’s still an open question whether the party can “summon up the energy they need to get the big turnout that it would take to dislodge Susan Collins.”

Shea said he thinks an exit by Platner could make defeating Collins more likely. He argued that many Maine voters were “interested in making a change” from Collins and agreed with Platner’s political views, but “worried a lot about Graham Platner’s character.”

“My sense is that it may be a blessing in disguise,” he said.

    image

Trump admin reimposes oil sanctions after Iran strikes ships near Strait of Hormuz

The Trump administration is reimposing sanctions on Iranian oil sales in retaliation for a series of attacks on commercial ships near the Strait of Hormuz.

“Iran will only reap benefits if they exhibit good behavior,” a US official said in a statement. “Iran’s actions in the Strait were wholly unacceptable to the United States and will be met with consequences.”

The move marks the latest challenge to the fragile ceasefire between US and Iran, and eliminates one of the central concessions made to the Iranian regime in exchange for its reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

A picture taken on March 12, 2017, shows a view of an Iranian oil facility in the Kharg Island, on the shore of the Gulf.

It has jolted global oil prices, with the price of Brent crude futures rising more than 5% Tuesday.

The US Treasury Department had initially agreed to lift sanctions on the sale of Iranian oil for 60 days as part of the ceasefire agreement, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent characterized at the time as a show of confidence in the two nations’ “productive talks.”

The pact allowed traffic through the strait to increase, contributing to a sharp decline in global oil prices. Yet the ceasefire has since been tested on multiple occasions, after Iran fired on ships in or near the strait.

The administration did not immediately signal how long the sanctions would be reimposed or under what conditions it would consider lifting them again. A notice published Tuesday by the Treasury Department said only that its earlier temporary sanctions relief had been “revoked and superseded in its entirety.”
