John Thune goes ‘all in’ for Ken Paxton after bitter primary ripped GOP apart

Paxton thanks Trump, targets Talarico after Texas GOP primary win

In his first post-victory interview with Fox News Digital, Ken Paxton thanked President Trump for his endorsement, predicted Cornyn supporters “will come around,” and dismissed concerns about being outspent: “Here I am still winning races.”

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton added another endorsement to his growing field of backers in the Senate GOP: Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D.

Thune announced his support of Paxton on the Hugh Hewitt show Wednesday afternoon, less than a day after the bloody primary fight in the Lone Star State concluded. And the main target now is Texas state Rep. James Talarico, the insurgent Democratic nominee waiting for Paxton in November.

The voters, Republican voters in Texas spoke last night,” Thune said. “Ken Paxton is our nominee heading into November, and we got to pivot and go all in to make sure that we keep Texas red, that he wins, and that we keep a far-left liberal out of the United States Senate.”

“And obviously, that seat is gonna be very key to our majority, which will determine the future of this country,” he continued.

Paxton was neither Thune nor the majority of Senate Republicans’ first choice, however.

Most of the Senate GOP backed longtime incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, throughout the grueling battle to elect Texas’ Republican nominee for Senate. And many were shocked when President Donald Trump opted to endorse Paxton at the last minute, one week before Tuesday night’s runoff election finale.

Republicans feared that if Paxton came out on top, it could tip the balance in favor of Democrats, who haven’t sent a lawmaker to the upper chamber since 1988.

But facing Talarico, who easily toppled his primary opponent, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, has placed the priority of maintaining the GOP’s majority in the Senate over personal choice for Republicans.

“We’ve gotta do everything we can do as a party, to make sure that we win this race,” Thune said. “Because, you know, losing is not an option when it comes to the state of Texas, and what it means for our majority in the Senate.”

Thune isn’t the first Senate Republican to back Paxton, either.

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, leapt ahead of the crowd Tuesday night shortly after the race was called and urged the GOP to come together to beat Talarico, who he charged was a “far left freak who supports open borders, trans ideology, and even called the American flag a ‘complicated symbol.’”

“I am proud to endorse Paxton,” Moreno said on X. “The voters have spoken, now Republicans must unite and win.”

And the number two Republican in the Senate, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., soon followed.

“James Talarico is a far-left extremist,” Barrasso said on X. “He is a rubber stamp for open borders, illegal immigrant criminals, and men playing in women’s sports. Talarico is too radical for Texas.”

(CBS News)

Trump visited soldiers at Walter Reed — but not the 14 injured in the Iran war

    2026-05-27 6:00 PM EDT / CBS News

By Michael Kaplan Reporter and Producer

    Jonah Kaplan Investigative Reporter

President Trump made time to visit with U.S. service members during his trip Tuesday to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, but he did not see any of the 14 troops injured in the war he started with Iran who are also recovering at the hospital, according to the family of one soldier and another military official familiar with Mr. Trump’s visit.

The White House said Mr. Trump met with service members during his six-month checkup at the Army’s flagship medical center, but repeatedly declined to say whether the president saw soldiers injured in Operation Epic Fury.

“President Trump was honored to meet with our amazing service members and medical staff while at Walter Reed Medical Center,” said a White House spokesperson, who declined to provide any guidance on why the president did not meet with soldiers wounded in the Iran war.

Sergeant Cory Hicks was stationed at an Army post in Kuwait that was hit by an Iranian drone in March, during the first 24 hours of the conflict. The attack killed six American soldiers and injured more than 20. Hicks is one of six from the Kuwait attack still recovering at Walter Reed. He suffered a lacerated kidney, a severed spleen and a traumatic brain injury.

“I’ve come a long way — that’s for sure,” Hicks told CBS Minnesota last month. “I spent 19 years in the military so far and I love serving my country, but this [recovery from wounds] is a different battle. You’ve got to fight once you get injured.”

A day before his visit to Walter Reed, during his Memorial Day remarks at Arlington Cemetery, Mr. Trump paid tribute to 13 soldiers who had died in Operation Epic Fury, calling them “wonderful souls” who “gave their lives” to ensure Iran would never have a nuclear weapon.

Mr. Trump on Wednesday during a Cabinet meeting again referred to the 13 as “great people” and said losing them “is a terrible thing.”

“We want to lose very few, we want very few to be injured. We’re very careful, but war is war. War is dangerous.”

In March, Mr. Trump also attended the dignified transfers of the six soldiers who died in the Kuwait attack and six who died in a refueling accident over Iraq.

It is customary for American presidents to visit with troops wounded in battle. In 2004, during the Iraq War, President George W. Bush said after a visit to Walter Reed, that it was an honor “to meet the wounded who have made a decision to sacrifice for this nation’s security and for freedom in the world… It is an honor to meet their parents or their wives, their children, brave souls who support their loved one with all their heart.”

In 2017, during his first term, Mr. Trump himself paid a visit to the military hospital to present the Purple Heart to a soldier who had been wounded in Afghanistan.

Mr. Trump has previously faced scrutiny for his descriptions of wounded service members. During his first term, he said the soldiers injured in a 2020 Iranian airstrike on an American base in Iraq weren’t worth mentioning because they had suffered “headaches,” which he described as “not very serious.”

A CBS News investigation later found dozens of soldiers who had suffered brain injuries were denied the Purple Heart as part of an effort to downplay their wounds and avoid undercutting Mr. Trump. One later took his own life.

Mr. Trump has also denied reports he called U.S. Marines who died in World War I “suckers” and “losers” after he canceled a 2018 visit to the cemetery in France where they were buried.

According to the Defense Department, 409 U.S. troops have been injured in the Iran war. Last month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified to Congress that roughly 90% have returned to duty.

Troops injured in the Kuwait attack suffered from severe shrapnel wounds and head injuries. Hicks is now in a soldier recovery unit at Walter Reed and has described the heavy mental toll of the attack.

“I lost six of my battle buddies who were sitting pretty close to me and that’s a struggle within itself,” he said in the April interview. “The invisible wounds are hard to heal. A lot of them were further away from the blast than I was, so when you go through something like that, you go through a lot of guilt.”

Trump’s ‘blow ‘em up’ threat to Oman means he’s now attacked or threatened 1 out of every 13 countries

As a presidential candidate, Donald Trump gleefully painted his opponents as trigger-happy interventionists who would get the United States bogged down in all manner of foreign wars — up to and including World War III.

As president, Trump has racked up an astonishing list of countries he’s both threatened to attack and actually attacked.

Trump added a new entry to that list on Wednesday, threatening to strike Oman if it tries to control the Strait of Hormuz along with Iran.

“Oman will behave just like everybody else, or we’ll have to blow ‘em up,” Trump said at a White House Cabinet meeting.

It was particularly striking because it was phrased like an aside — something Trump seemingly casually dropped with little thought beforehand.

And that’s become somewhat typical for Trump.

Oman is at least the 15th country that he has either threatened to attack, left open the possibility of attacking, or actually attacked during his two terms as president. Nearly all of those instances occurred in the first 16 months of his second term, though some span both terms.

He’s launched strikes in seven countries so far this term — Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen — after also attacking some of those countries in his first term. That doesn’t even count the strikes on alleged drug-trafficking boats in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, which have targeted nearly 60 vessels and killed more than 190 people.

He has also threatened or left open the possibility of strikes against seven others this term: Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Greenland (which is part of Denmark), Mexico, Panama and now Oman. He also threatened Mexico and North Korea in his first term.

Not all of those threats and strikes are the same. Some, like the strikes in Iraq, were narrowly targeted at terrorists rather than the government in power. And some of the threats were less direct — in many cases, Trump just declined to rule out the possibility.

Some of this may be explained by Trump’s embrace of the “madman theory” when it comes to foreign policy. In other words, he likes to portray himself as unpredictable, believing it makes foreign adversaries more likely to kowtow to his demands.

But all of it betrays a remarkably bellicose attitude from a president who has already invaded two countries this year (Iran and Venezuela) and appears to be considering a third (Cuba).

And the data point to just how militant Trump has been. Here are some stats.

    1 out of 13 countries

That’s how many Trump has threatened or attacked so far: 15 out of the nearly 200 countries in the world.

    1 out of 11 people

Those countries account for 1 out of every 11 people in the world. That means 1 out of every 11 people on the planet has been at least somewhat worried that Trump could initiate a military strike on their country.

5 countries in the Middle East

Trump has now threatened or targeted five countries in the Middle East alone. That’s five out of fewer than 20 total countries in the Middle East.

    4 continents

Trump’s threats and strikes have included countries on four of the world’s six populous continents: Africa, Asia, North America and South America. He’s also technically threatened a European country in Denmark, albeit by talking about seizing its territory in North America.

    5 potential targets for imperialism

Of the 15 countries he’s struck or threatened, he’s identified five of them as possible additions to the United States: Canada, Cuba, Greenland, Panama (specifically, the Panama Canal) and Venezuela.

Trump says he can outwait Iran, dismisses midterm election pressure

WASHINGTON, May 27 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he was unconcerned about the political fallout of an extended conflict with Iran, and that Iranian leaders had miscalculated if they thought the November midterm ‌elections would force him into a deal.

“They thought they were going to outwait me,” Trump said at a White House cabinet meeting, referring to Iran’s leadership. “You know, ‘We’ll outwait him. He’s got the midterms.’ I don’t care about the midterms.”

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

Trump made the comments as he discussed how to end the conflict. Still, many of his Republican allies were already uneasy with his earlier dismissive comments about the economic impact of the war on Americans.

The president had initially said the war would last four to six weeks, and it is now approaching its fourth month. At times, he has suggested the conflict could end within days only to later suggest that the conflict could go on for some time.

Growing voter disquiet about high prices, especially for gasoline, has added to political pressure on Trump’s Republican Party, which is widely expected to struggle to keep control of the House of Representatives and possibly ‌the Senate.

That disquiet was amplified by Trump’s decision to endorse Ken Paxton, a scandal-plagued primary challenger, over incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas.

Paxton, who was indicted for felony fraud and is being divorced by his wife on biblical grounds, handily beat Cornyn in a Tuesday party primary after securing the president’s endorsement. Democrats now view the Senate seat in the solidly Republican state as competitive in November.

“Look at what happened last night,” Trump said, referring to Paxton’s win. “That was a prelude to the midterms.”

During the cabinet meeting, Trump also referred to some of his construction projects in the U.S. capital. Some Republican lawmakers have said these are a distraction from more pressing economic issues.

A Reuters review of his public statements since January showed that the president has increasingly mentioned the White House ballroom, renovations of the Reflecting Pool and plans for a giant arch.

Big loss for Democrat who wanted ‘Zionists’ in camps may still signal big trouble on horizon

Voter turnout dropped 56% in the run-off, but Maureen Galindo retained most of her base from the March primary

Tom Homan calls Texas Dem House candidate Maureen Galindo an ‘idiot’

Both Republican and Democratic strategists argued that the defeat of Texas Democrat Maureen Galindo — a congressional candidate who said Zionists should be held in ICE detention centers — was not the “course correction” some Democrats claimed, despite efforts to frame the loss as a rejection of far-left extremism.

Galindo’s suggestion on a podcast that aired just weeks before the runoff election that “billionaire Zionists” should be imprisoned at the Karnes ICE facility in Texas garnered massive blowback from Democrats and Republicans alike, who alleged Galindo’s comment was a proposal for internment camps.

Congressional Democratic leadership in particular was vocal in their condemnation of Galindo. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., issued a joint statement with Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene calling Galindo’s words “vile” and “disqualifying.”

In response to the backlash, Galindo shared in a statement claiming that she never called for “internment camps,” blaming the uproar over a headline by an “unethical journalist.”

DEMOCRATS VOW TO VOTE ‘EVERY SINGLE DAY’ TO EXPEL FELLOW DEM FROM CONGRESS IF SHE WINS MIDTERM

Galindo lost Tuesday’s runoff election, capturing roughly 36% of the vote. Her opponent, Johnny Garcia, who is viewed as a moderate Democrat, won the runoff race with 63.8% of the vote. Back in March, Galindo narrowly won the state’s primary with 29.2% of the vote. Garcia was a close second, winning 27% of the vote.

“I think no matter how hard the Republican donors pushed this Democratic primary candidate, that the voters looked at her and said, ‘Now we don’t want a nut case here in the House of Representatives,’” progressive talk show host Thom Hartmann told Fox News Digital.

Just days after Galindo’s comments about imprisoning Zionists became public, Lead Left PAC, a mysterious super PAC suspected of having ties to Republican donors, donated half a million dollars to Galindo’s campaign. The suspicions stemmed in part from a Punchbowl News report that found links to WinRed — the GOP’s fundraising platform — embedded in the metadata of Lead Left PAC’s website.

“I think probably the more interesting part of this is that Lead Left —this super PAC that is filled with Republican donors — was pushing her,” Hartmann told Fox News.

“‘Hey, let’s find a wacky lefty sex therapist who will make antisemitic remarks, and let’s really promote her in a Democratic primary,’ which is what they did, and you know it’s a good thing she lost,” Hartmann said. “I mean this is the kind of candidate that does damage to the Democrats.”

But Republican political strategist Ben Ferguson pushed back on the notion that Galindo’s extremist views are out of step with the current crop of Democratic candidates, pointing to Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner, who has a Nazi tattoo.

“If Democratic voters were truly revolting against the activist-left, then why are some of the loudest and fastest-rising voices in the party still pushing ideas that most Americans consider completely outside the mainstream?” Ferguson told Fox News Digital.

“The truth is Democrats are not rejecting extremism — they’re only rejecting the versions that become politically impossible to defend on cable news,” Ferguson continued.

Richard Gordon, a political analyst who previously worked on Democratic campaigns, suggested that Galindo’s defeat was more a reflection of her hitting a ceiling than a course correction among voters. He noted that voter turnout dropped by 56% in the runoff compared to the primary election and that Galindo’s vote total also dropped by about 44%, signaling she retained most of her base.

“I don’t think the voters self-corrected as much as she hit her ceiling and was never going to win as Mr. Garcia, the more moderate and closer to the electorate philosophically candidate, was able to consolidate the vote of the other candidates in the primary,” Gordon told Fox News Digital. “Let’s not forget that Ms. Galindo only received 29.2% of the vote the first time. That means that 70% of voters wanted someone else, which is close to the 64% that Mr. Garcia received in the runoff.”

“In my view, Ms. Galindo would have lost anyway,” Gordon said. “She wasn’t a bridge too far for progressives as much as she was just too liberal for this district.”
