Bondi grilled on Epstein files in first Capitol Hill return since DOJ ouster

    May 29, 2026 6:00am EDT / Fox News

Top Oversight Democrat says, ‘It’s time for the truth’

    By Adam Pack, Fox News

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi returns to Capitol Hill on Friday for the first time since being ousted from the Justice Department, as lawmakers prepare to grill her over the Epstein files.

Bondi will voluntarily participate in a transcribed interview with the House Oversight Committee as part of the panel’s investigation into the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Democrats walked out of a heated briefing hosted by Bondi and then-Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on the Epstein files in March, but lawmakers on the oversight panel are expected to heavily scrutinize her tenure during the closed-door testimony, which could stretch for hours.

“Pam Bondi will finally have to answer our questions tomorrow about the Epstein files,” House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Robert Garcia, D-Calif., wrote on social media. “It’s time for the truth.”

HOUSE OVERSIGHT SUBPOENAS AG BONDI IN PROBE OF EPSTEIN CASE ‘MISMANAGEMENT’

Bondi’s appearance comes after Democrats and a handful of Republicans on the committee threatened to recommend civil contempt charges against her if she did not comply with a subpoena for her testimony.

The Trump administration initially argued that Bondi should not have to testify and sit for a deposition as part of the committee’s probe because she was no longer in her official role as attorney general.

The transcribed interview setting will not require Bondi to testify before congressional investigators under oath, but individuals speaking before Congress are still criminally prohibited from making false statements. A transcript of the interview could also be made available at a later date.

The interview is taking place during Congress’ Memorial Day recess, and it remains unclear how many lawmakers will attend.

Some Democrats on the panel have voiced objections to the interview setting.

“Bondi must testify under oath, on camera, for the public to see,” Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-Ariz.,said Thursday. “We demand transparency and accountability for Bondi and Blanche.”

PAM BONDI DIAGNOSED WITH THYROID CANCER WEEKS AFTER DEPARTING AS TRUMP’S ATTORNEY GENERAL: REPORT

Bondi has faced relentless scrutiny over the Department of Justice’s handling of the Epstein files under her leadership, including from some Republicans, such as Reps. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Thomas Massie, R-Ky.

She told Fox News at the start of her DOJ tenure that the files were “sitting on my desk right now for review,” but later appeared to backtrack on that claim.

Scrutiny mounted after a monthslong delay in releasing information to the public, which accelerated after President Donald Trump signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act, mandating the release of the files.

The department has since released more than 3 million pages of documents, though critics have complained that the records were not appropriately redacted.

Bondi will be represented by Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon, who has served as Bondi’s counsel since her firing.

“Because former Attorney General Bondi oversaw the Department at the time the Act was enacted and carried out, DOJ’s presence is solely to ensure accurate representation of Department processes, facilitate any necessary clarifications, and support a complete factual record for the Committee,” a DOJ spokesperson told Fox News Digital in a statement.

The interview also comes as Bondi has undergone treatment for thyroid cancer, Axios first reported. The former top prosecutor was diagnosed shortly after leaving the Justice Department in April.

“Pam has been quietly kicking cancer’s a– the last few weeks,” former Trump official and podcaster Katie Miller wrote on social media.

Ebola and hantavirus outbreaks raise questions about Trump’s health agency cuts

May 29, 2026 5:00 AM EDT / KFF Health News

The Trump administration’s deep cuts to federal health agencies have become a political liability after a deadly outbreak of hantavirus aboard a cruise ship and the spread of an even more fearsome disease, Ebola, in Africa.

At least that’s the way many Democrats see it.

They have seized on the situation to charge that the U.S. is ill prepared to respond to outbreaks — let alone a pandemic — after President Trump slashed jobs and funding for public health infrastructure and pandemic preparedness. Infectious disease specialists have called on the White House to reverse cuts and rejoin the World Health Organization.

The White House, meanwhile, is on the defensive, trying to reassure a pandemic-weary public that the federal government can still mount effective responses to infectious disease outbreaks.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention underwent massive layoffs as part of an effort led by billionaire businessman Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, that also resulted in the cancellations of billions of dollars in federal contracts and grants.

“These outbreaks are unfolding at a time when the U.S. public health infrastructure is under significant strain,” said Leana Wen, an emergency physician and former Baltimore health commissioner. “The CDC currently lacks a director, the FDA lacks a director, there is no surgeon general, and many leaders with outbreak response management experience have left the federal government.”

The U.S. government has ordered quarantines and is monitoring potential exposures to hantavirus after an outbreak on a cruise ship. It is also implementing new restrictions for foreign travelers amid an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda that has grown to more than 1,000 suspected cases. While neither situation is seen as likely to become a global pandemic, Democrats and infectious disease leaders have seized on the outbreaks to criticize the effects of the DOGE cuts and other administration public health policies.

The hantavirus cluster occurred on the MV Hondius, an expedition ship that left Argentina on April 1 for a monthlong sojourn with almost 150 people aboard. The earliest cases, including two deaths, were reported to the WHO on May 2. Three of 11 infected passengers have died. Hantavirus is typically spread to people from rodents, but this version, known as the Andes virus, can be passed person to person.

The Ebola outbreak has captured public attention, though no cases have been confirmed in the U.S. The virus — a rare strain called Bundibugyo, against which there are no proven vaccines or treatments — spread undetected for weeks, prompting WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to say he’s concerned about the “scale and speed” of the outbreak. Seven Americans, including a doctor exposed to the virus, were evacuated to Germany by the U.S. State Department.

    Democrats criticize cuts

Some Democrats are pressing the administration to rejoin the WHO and restore funding to federal agencies. A lawsuit is ongoing over the dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development, the primary agency for providing foreign assistance. Core USAID activities included efforts to build local outbreak detection and prevention capacity in vulnerable regions, including in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) noted the emerging threats associated with the rising Ebola case count, posting May 27 on X: “We know how to stop outbreaks like this. But Trump chose not to stop it. He destroyed our global health team, deliberately exposing us.”

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said May 21 on X that the Trump administration’s “sweeping and self destructive foreign aid cuts” left the U.S. and Congo struggling to contain the Ebola outbreak.

“An utterly predictable result from the chaos of DOGE,” he said.

And, in the wake of the hantavirus outbreak, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York called on the administration to rehire fired outbreak response workers, restore funding at the CDC and Department of Health and Human Services, and rejoin the WHO’s global outbreak warning network.

“The Trump administration’s gutting of America’s public health preparedness has made the recent hantavirus outbreak even more alarming,” Schumer said May 12 on the Senate floor.

Federal agencies pushed back on criticisms about the early response to hantavirus, with officials insisting on social media, at press events, and in TV appearances that their work was appropriate and effective.

The federal government is conducting a coordinated, interagency response, HHS spokesperson Emily Hilliard said. Claims that federal cuts have imperiled the response or future pandemic preparedness are “completely inaccurate,” Hilliard said.

The CDC and State Department say they are ensuring rapid viral testing is available for the Ebola outbreak and are actively deploying resources through State Department country offices in Congo and Uganda.

“I want to assure you that CDC and our federal partners are working around the clock to ensure our information is accurate and that action plans are being implemented immediately,” Satish Pillai, who is leading the CDC’s Ebola response, said in a May 19 press call.

    Trouble spots

The criticism isn’t just coming from Democrats. Public health officials also say that Trump administration actions have hampered the response to both outbreaks and that the cuts to USAID helped set the stage for the spread of Ebola.

The International Rescue Committee, which helps people affected by humanitarian crises, has said funding cuts by the administration in March 2025 prompted a reduction in disease surveillance systems in the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak.

The U.S. had funded the surveillance, as well as outbreak preparedness efforts to prevent infections, with hand-washing stations, showers, latrines, and waste management. The committee said it had to cut programming.

“Years of underinvestment and recent funding cuts have left many health facilities without adequate protective equipment, surveillance capacity, or frontline support needed to respond quickly and safely,” Heather Reoch Kerr, the committee’s country director in Congo, said in a statement.

The federal government’s overall response to the outbreak, including the decision not to fly Americans exposed to Ebola to the U.S. for treatment, stands in sharp contrast with previous responses to Ebola, some epidemiologists and former health officials say. It also could discourage other medical professionals from traveling to the region to help.

During the 2014-15 outbreak in West Africa, the federal government eventually deployed Army and Navy technicians and other service members to process blood tests, build medical labs, and train local healthcare workers.

USAID emergency response teams also played a key role in the on-the-ground response to that Ebola outbreak, from building treatment rooms to handling burial of the dead, Ron Klain, Ebola czar during the Obama administration, said on NPR.

Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, said USAID was “a key support for programs.”

“The infrastructure in Africa has been cut with the cuts at USAID,” he said. “It’s making it more difficult.”

The United States’ ability to respond to a real pandemic is “a mess” because of the cuts and the administration’s stance on mRNA vaccines, the technology behind COVID shots, Osterholm said. The White House last year canceled nearly $500 million in contracts for mRNA vaccine development despite a lack of evidence showing any health risks.

The rapid technology would enable faster worldwide vaccine production in the case of a pandemic compared with more traditional vaccine development, Osterholm said.

Some health leaders have also leveled criticism over the U.S. response to hantavirus. For example, the CDC on May 8 issued a health advisory about the cluster of hantavirus cases on the cruise ship in the Atlantic, but the alert came after some passengers had already arrived in the U.S. in late April on commercial flights.

And the agency’s first news conference on the outbreak aboard the MV Hondius took place May 9. The phone briefing with reporters came five days after the WHO had alerted the public about the situation.

“The first press conference was after this was international news,” said Wen, the former Baltimore health official.

The CDC has defended its response to hantavirus. It has required U.S. passengers of the cruise ship to remain in a quarantine facility and has assured the public that the overall health risk here at home is low.

“The country is prepared. The CDC is focused on it,” Mehmet Oz, a physician and head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, told reporters at the White House on May 11.

‘The thing I do best in life is build’: How Trump has made construction his second job as president

    2026-05-29T09:00:08.688Z / CNN

President Donald Trump had just finished showing off renderings for June’s White House UFC fight when his focus shifted to another set of designs.

As he left the Oval Office earlier this month, he could be heard peppering an associate about his biggest construction obsession: His East Wing ballroom. He claimed portions were missing from the latest renderings and asked for clarity on its many columns.

The brief interaction in the halls of the West Wing — which came on the same day the US was trading proposals on an elusive end to the war with Iran — showed how intimately involved the president is with every detail of his signature project, and how much of his time it’s consuming.

Trump’s predecessors have sought creative ways to protect their valuable time: cutting down on decision-making, limiting staff walk-in access to the Oval Office and replacing meetings with to-the-point memos.

But that’s not Trump’s approach when it comes to design and construction — from updates to the West Wing to the 90,000-square-foot new East Wing to projects across Washington, DC, for which he comes to meetings prepared with swatches and feedback on finishes and scale.

During Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, he talked at length about his pet projects — including positing a new one: repainting the bottom of the fountain at the World War II memorial, like he has with the Reflecting Pool. On Monday, upon returning from a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, he spent roughly six minutes inspecting columns on the North Portico before retreating indoors. And last week, he brought reporters outside for a 45-minute presentation on the ballroom’s progress.

But the American public hasn’t viewed his East Wing demolition and ballroom construction charitably. A source close to the president suggested to CNN that he waited until his second term, when he wouldn’t be running again, to pursue these projects.

“It’s politically toxic, any way you cut it. Look at how everybody’s paying attention to it and the grief he’s been given,” the source said.

In Trump’s view, though, construction — and defending those projects against legal challenges — isn’t a side project; it’s the foundation of his legacy, according to sources familiar with his thinking.

“I’m a really good builder. The thing I do best in life is build,” the president told reporters last week over the raucous sound of ballroom construction.

The former real estate executive involves himself with meticulous design details — to an extent that has surprised sources who have met with him about his construction projects.

“He felt very confident in his opinions about technical details,” one of the sources said about the president’s participation in a recent meeting, requesting anonymity to speak freely.

“He comes with fabric samples, tile samples, images that you wouldn’t see the developer themselves bring to a high-level meeting. You would see the developer’s third rung down the leadership staff bring that to the meeting,” the source said.

But the commander-in-chief inserts himself in all of it — shopping for marble and onyx at a South Florida stone showroom, selecting the image of an auto-pen to represent former President Joe Biden on his “Presidential Walk of Fame,” and demanding that his proposed arch be the tallest in the world.

It started with gilding the Oval Office, a design choice that crept into the Roosevelt Room.

“It’s gold leaf,” Trump is known to tell visitors. “None of the fake stuff.”

And the transformation at the White House hasn’t been subtle. When Trump decides what he wants, he seeks immediate action, sources said.

“I have two jobs. I have a construction job … which is really like relaxation for me because I’ve been doing it all my life,” Trump recently said.

This week, construction on a temporary arena for next month’s UFC fight has taken over the White House grounds. The massive structure erected on the South Lawn is even visible from the North Lawn.

He’s already finished several projects. The Rose Garden has been paved with stone and reconfigured in the image of his Mar-a-Lago patio; the tongue-in-cheek “Presidential Walk of Fame,” with biographies written in Trump’s voice, has been installed along the West Colonnade, plus new granite pavers; Giant new flagpoles and a helipad have been added to the lawn. And the Palm Room flooring and the storied Lincoln Bedroom bathroom have been redone in marble.

Trump has also set his sights beyond the White House: Across town, the Kennedy Center — whose facade also now bears his name — is undergoing a sweeping renovation requiring a two-year closure. He’s overseeing the repainting of the Reflecting Pool, along with plans for the massive arch (which has lost eight feet). He’s building new sidewalks for Lafayette Square, pushing a coat of white “magic paint” for the neighboring Eisenhower Executive Office Building and resurrecting a plan for a “Garden of American Heroes” proposed during his first term and scrapped by the Biden administration.

Trump has spent more time reflecting on his legacy during his second term — and he sees his rebuilding of the White House and Washington, DC, as part of that, sources said.

“Look at Donald Trump’s life, look at what he’s done: Built things that no one will ever tear down,” the source close to the president told CNN, noting that even if successors undo his policies, the ballroom will likely still stand.

“The one thing they can’t tear down will be the East Wing. That is his lasting impact. That’s why he cares so deeply: legacy sh*t,” the source said.

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told CNN in a statement that “everyone should celebrate” the president’s “historic beautification of the White House and our Nation’s Capital and giving it the glory it deserves.”

    Legal and political challenges

Trump is expending political capital to get his projects done, with the White House recently pressuring Congress to authorize $1 billion for security costs tied to the ballroom, despite the president repeatedly saying the project would be privately funded.

“This is really being built for other presidents, it’s not being built for me,” Trump said last week, trying to make the case for the national imperative of his ballroom after the Senate parliamentarian ruled against some of his funding being in the latest GOP budget bill.

But Republicans have feared spending taxpayer dollars on such a project would only reinforce voters’ perceptions their party is out of touch, Senate aides and others familiar with the matter previously told CNN. The GOP dramatically broke with the president last week over that and his “anti-weaponization” fund.

But taxpayers are also expected to foot costs for some of his other projects — including portions of the arch, the “Garden of Heroes” and the Reflecting Pool renovations.

Trump has leaned on the same expansive view of executive authority that he’s often brought to tariffs or foreign policy — which has prompted similar legal pushback.

“It’s not just the projects taking his time — it’s defending all of these cases,” said the source who has met with Trump about one of his projects.

The administration has been hit with at least 10 lawsuits taking aim at projects from the ballroom to the arch. At the heart of many of these legal challenges isn’t whether Trump can do what he wants to do, but whether he’s followed key processes in doing so, from seeking congressional approval to getting signoff from planning commissions in the nation’s capital.

Lawyers from the highest levels of the Justice Department have been tapped to defend the president in court, arguing that he is acting within his presidential powers.

“His fingerprints are all over these cases the same way they’re all over the choice of upholstery for seats in the Kennedy Center,” said the source.

Fifteen months after saying a list of Jeffrey Epstein’s clients was “sitting on my desk right now,” and four months after overseeing the release of millions of associated documents, former Attorney General Pam Bondi will testify before a House committee on Friday about her handling of the so-called Epstein files.

Bondi’s closed-door interview in the ongoing congressional investigation into Epstein is likely to have a different focus than previous high-profile sit-downs in the probe. The House Oversight Committee has questioned the likes of former President Bill Clinton and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick about their relationships with the deceased former sex abuser, but Bondi was not among Epstein’s globetrotting network of powerful friends.

Instead, she faced more than a year of withering criticism for her handling of the Department of Justice’s Epstein probe, and the rollout of documents after President Trump signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

Bondi initially pledged to release files related to Epstein, telling a Fox News interviewer shortly after she took office in February 2025 that a “client list” was “sitting on my desk right now to review.” Bondi later clarified that she meant material related to Epstein was sitting on her desk.

In July 2025, the Justice Department published a memo concluding that there was no “client list” and “that no further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted.” The memo sparked bipartisan outrage in Congress and jolted the effort to pass a bill mandating the Justice Department release its files. Days later, Mr. Trump ordered Bondi to seek the release of grand jury transcripts related to Epstein cases.

She had faced months of heated criticism from members of Congress in both parties over the Justice Department’s efforts to comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. It required the release of the Justice Department’s records related to federal investigations into Epstein and accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell within 30 days, a deadline the department did not meet.

About 3 million pages of documents were ultimately published, but that total is only about half of the files kept by the Justice Department. It said the remaining were withheld for a variety of reasons, including efforts to protect survivors’ personal information and to avoid jeopardizing active federal investigations.

The president fired Bondi in April. In announcing the move, he called her a “great American patriot” despite his behind-the-scenes frustration with her performance on the job.

She was originally scheduled to appear before the Oversight Committee under subpoena on April 14, but the Justice Department canceled her interview because she had been removed from her post as attorney general.

Bondi’s testimony comes just days after revealing to CBS News that she is undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer. She said she was diagnosed after leaving the Justice Department and recently underwent surgery as part of her treatment.

Her appearance comes on the heels of a slew of prominent interviews conducted by the committee in recent months. In addition to Clinton and Lutnick, the committee deposed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, billionaire Les Wexner and Epstein’s lawyer and accountant Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn. All denied knowledge of Epstein’s crimes, and denounced his behavior.
