中美两军在美国夏威夷举行2026年度中美海上军事安全磋商机制工作小组会议。中国解放军强调，坚决反对任何以航行和飞越自由为名危害中国主权和安全，反对任何针对中方的侵权挑衅和抵近侦察滋扰。

中国解放军公众号“人民海军”星期一（6月1日）发布，5月28日至29日，中美两军在美国夏威夷举行2026年度中美海上军事安全磋商机制工作小组会议。

解放军文告称，双方以构建“中美建设性战略稳定关系”重要共识为引领，在平等和尊重基础上，就当前中美海空安全形势进行了坦诚、建设性交流，对2025年中美海上军事安全磋商机制会议以来的《中美海空相遇安全行为准则》执行情况进行了评估，讨论了改进中美海上军事安全问题的措施。

文告称，双方一致认为，两军进行有效沟通交流，有助于一线部队更加专业地执行任务，增进相互了解、避免误解误判。

President Donald Trump is turning foreign-influence laws that once ensnared figures in his own orbit toward left-wing activist networks accused of benefiting from overseas money and support.

Once seldom enforced criminally, FARA became a more prominent tool at the DOJ after 2016, including in cases involving several figures in Trump’s orbit as well as some prominent Democrats. Now, legal experts say that FARA and other laws dealing with foreign influence are emerging as a potential weapon in Trump’s campaign against left-wing activist networks.

“Unfortunately, it seems clear that the Biden administration went overboard and tried to use FARA as a political weapon against allies and supporters of President Trump instead of concentrating on real national security threats and those acting on behalf of foreign governments and principals without disclosing it as required by the law,” Hans von Spakovsky, senior legal fellow at Advancing American Freedom, a think tank founded by former Vice President Mike Pence, told Fox News Digital.

FARA requires people acting in the United States on behalf of foreign governments or political parties to disclose their relationships, activities and funding to the Justice Department. While the law has been on the books for decades, criminal prosecutions related to it have become more common from 2016 onwards, engendering resentment among conservatives who feel they were unfairly targeted by the Justice Department.

“Prior to the Mueller gang and the deep state using it against Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn, FARA was rarely, if ever used for criminal purposes,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton told Fox News Digital. “It was seen as a paperwork issue … anti-Trump fanaticism turned it into a weapon to put people in jail.”

FARA prosecutions were relatively rare prior to the first Trump administration, with only seven criminal cases being prosecuted between 1966 and 2015. In 2018 alone, however, the Department of Justice charged more than 20 individuals and entities with FARA violations.

During the first Trump administration and the Biden administration, many of those targeted by the Department of Justice for undisclosed links to foreign governments were viewed as close allies of Trump.

Paul Manafort, Trump’s 2016 campaign chair and a long-time GOP consultant, for instance, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States in 2018 in connection with his activity as an unregistered foreign agent for Ukraine.

Michael Flynn separately came under scrutiny for his firm’s work tied to Turkish interests, while his criminal plea involved false statements to the FBI about conversations with Russia’s ambassador. Flynn’s business partner was convicted of acting as an undisclosed agent of Turkey, though the conviction was eventually overturned and the investigation was dropped by the Justice Department.

Conservatives were not exclusively targeted during the last two administrations, however.

Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat, Sen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, and Linda Sun, a former Democratic staffer, all faced foreign influence investigations under the Biden administration.

The pattern of right-wing politicos getting caught up in alleged foreign influence schemes continued into the Biden administration, with Rudy Giuliani, GOP megadonor Stephen Wynn and Trump associate Tom Barrack all being investigated for foreign ties.

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi wound down FARA enforcement upon taking office in 2025, narrowing prosecutions to activities resembling traditional espionage, citing the law’s purported weaponization under President Joe Biden. Fitton characterized this as a “reversion to the norm.”

In a departure from the prior two administrations, Spakovsky told Fox News Digital that the Trump administration is working to “implement a comprehensive national security strategy that integrates FARA as a tool,” citing a national security memo issued by the president in 2025.

NSPM-7,the memo referenced by Spakovsky, is a Trump administration directive ordering federal agencies to investigate and disrupt alleged networks behind domestic terrorism and organized political violence. It specifically directs the Department of Justice to scrutinize foreign ties and investigate possible FARA violations in order to investigate advocacy groups, nonprofits, donors and activists linked to alleged political violence.

Some groups on the right and left have criticized the memo for potentially targeting constitutionally protected expression. The ACLU, for instance, argued that it could chill free speech since the document explicitly calls out “anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism and anti-Christianity” as dangers to the United States.

Spakovsky, however, argued that the memo simply implements changes that were recommended by career civil servants during the Obama administration.

“When looking at the directive, another important point on FARA is to go back to a very revealing report issued by DOJ’s Inspector General in 2016 in which it criticized DOJ’s lack of enforcement of FARA, including during the Obama administration,” he said. “It recommended that DOJ develop a comprehensive enforcement strategy that was integrated with DOJ’s overall national security efforts … This relatively new directive seems to be an effort to do exactly what the DOJ IG recommended ten years ago – implement a comprehensive national security strategy that integrates FARA as a tool.”

Though FARA is seen by many as the obvious mechanism to address foreign influence, if it is indeed being exerted on American activists, some legal experts are skeptical about relying on it alone.

“FARA is a powerful tool. It’s just a difficult tool to use,” Jason Torchinsky, a partner at the law firm Holtzman Vogel, told Fox News Digital. “It is a powerful tool, but there are other tools they can use too.”

Torchinsky pointed to the recent investigation into Twitch streamer Hasan Piker and Code PINK co-founder Medea Benjamin, initiated by the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, as an example of this.

“If these guys literally are shipping things to Cuba in violation of sanctions, that’s pretty easy,” he said. “You don’t have to prove any intent … OFAC sanctions are just such an easy crime to prosecute, because it’s like, you did X, I have evidence you did X, and it was prohibited … it’s a really nice sort of cut and dry criminal case.”

Trying to bring FARA charges into the mix, according to Torchinsky, could lead to unnecessary complications.

Torchinsky, who specializes in government ethics laws, noted that prosecuting violations of FARA often proves problematic as defendants can sometimes credibly claim their actions are protected by the First Amendment. Other options, he said, may be more attractive to prosecutors attempting to address foreign political influence.

Heritage Foundation senior legal fellow Zack Smith, added that prosecutors need to prove that those accused of violating FARA knew they were breaking the law at the time of their conduct, which he called “a very high standard.”

“The IRS has tools that allow them to revoke the nonprofit status of nonprofits that are acting illegally,” Torchinsky continued. “There’s a concept in internal revenue law called the illegality doctrine. The idea is that you can’t set up and operate as a nonprofit, something that’s illegal.”

Nonprofit organizations accused of providing material aid to foreign terrorist organizations, for instance, could be prosecuted by the administration without the Justice Department having to prove that they acted as unregistered foreign agents.

“Criminal statutes like wire fraud, bank fraud, those types of statutes could come into play, particularly if those carrying out these foreign influence operations are receiving cash or payments or some other type of compensation for taking part in these operations,” Smith added.

Some, however, see FARA as an indispensable tool in fighting foreign influence.

“I look forward to a quiet life outside of politics. With a fire-pit and beehives,” Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, posted to X on Wednesday. “Until then I am going to make it my mission to get the FARA office back up and running. The political divide in this country is a foreign op from multiple countries and it’s sad.”

Torchinsky noted that the presidential national security memo laid out some laws other than FARA that the administration could use to target foreign-backed political agitators.

“You can go after these folks, particularly these entities that are engaged in violence,” he said. “They’ve got conspiracy against rights, solicitation of a crime or violence, money laundering, funding terrorist acts or facilitating terrorism, arson offenses, RICO, and fraud against the United States.”

“For example, organizing protests and violence at companies that are in the F-35 supply chain, like Palestinian groups are doing, is potentially a solicitation of acts of violence,” Torchinsky added.

“Now, I suspect this is the beginning of a larger conversation over FARA, whether it needs to be revised, how it needs to be revised, what this regime will look like going forward to combat foreign influence in the United States,” Smith, the Heritage fellow, said. “But fundamentally, there should be broad agreement that foreign influence, particularly foreign influence directed at influencing our elections, our political discourse, is very problematic. Appropriate action should be taken to combat it.”

The Department of Justice, Treasury Department, and Code PINK did not respond to requests for comment when reached by Fox News Digital.

An Iranian woman who now lives in the U.S. told CBS News that she feared for the safety of her family members in Iran when President Trump threatened in April that “a whole civilization will die tonight” as Washington sought to make a deal with Tehran.

“They were scared too,” Setareh, who didn’t want to be identified by her last name, told CBS News’ Lindsey Reiser as the war with Iran entered its fourth month. “They didn’t know what was going to happen. We don’t know. We don’t know if he’s actually going to do it, so they could’ve died at any moment. So they were like sitting in terror and fear.”

Setareh was born and raised in Iran and moved to the U.S. later in life.

Mr. Trump’s threat on social media in early April came during a tense moment in the war before the U.S. and Iran struck a ceasefire agreement that has been tested several times. Over the weekend, the U.S. military conducted what it described as “self-defense strikes” on Iranian radar and drone sites after Iran allegedly shot down a U.S. drone that was operating over international waters.

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” Mr. Trump posted hours before he announced the ceasefire agreement. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”

Setareh said the threat made her feel a sense of terror take over her body.

“I was scared. I felt like I couldn’t think,” she said. “I felt this sense of terror take over my body. I thought about how, like, my family’s there. I wouldn’t know what would’ve happened to them. Just all these innocent people, the culture, just, they could all just be destroyed. I couldn’t even think. I just was, I felt paralyzed.”

United Airlines flight to Spain returns to U.S. after Bluetooth device is labeled a “certain four-letter word”

A United Airlines flight bound for Spain from Newark Liberty International Airport turned around midflight Saturday due to a possible security threat.

The flight departed around 6 p.m. for Palma de Mallorca, Spain, but landed back at Newark at 9:37 p.m., according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The airline said there were 190 passengers and 12 crew members on board the Boeing 767 aircraft.

According to air traffic control audio, security came to inspect the aircraft after someone named their Bluetooth device a “certain four-letter word.”

“They have to inspect the whole aircraft, including the cargo area,” the tower can be heard saying, according to audio from LiveATC.net

A passenger posting on social media said crew members repeatedly asked passengers to turn off all Bluetooth devices, but two devices remained on. The flight turned around after communicating with the airline’s headquarters in Chicago.

One person posted video on social media showing crew and officers escorting passengers off the plane and onto a bus on the tarmac.

Passengers had to evacuate as the aircraft was swept by Port Authority police, and passengers were re-screened by TSA and Customs and Border Patrol before re-boarding. The airline declined to provide specifics on the cause of the incident.

Passengers boarded a replacement flight with a new crew, which took off early Sunday morning and landed in Palma in the afternoon.

In a statement, the FAA said United Airlines Flight 236 returned to Newark Liberty International Airport on Saturday “after the crew reported a passenger disturbance.” According to the FAA, airlines have reported more than 640 unruly passenger incidents so far in 2026.

This was the latest incident with a United Airlines flight this month. On Friday, a domestic flight was diverted because of a security concern with an unruly passenger. Earlier this month, a United flight landing at Newark airport struck a semitrailer truck and a light pole, though no one was injured. The Boeing 767 was traveling at 160 mph at the time of the collision.

Election denier Tina Peters was released from a Colorado prison Monday, prison officials confirmed, weeks after the state’s Democratic governor granted a controversial commutation that cut her sentence in half.

The Republican former Mesa County clerk was convicted in 2024 of state felonies for conspiring with fellow election deniers to breach her county’s voting systems in hopes of proving President Donald Trump’s baseless 2020 voter-fraud claims.

The governor primarily justified his decision by citing a recent Colorado appeals court ruling that found the trial judge violated Peters’ First Amendment rights by improperly punishing Peters for her protected speech about the 2020 election. But he also defended his decision with a series of misleading and false claims about Peters’ case.

“It was a straightforward decision because, after reviewing the facts, and reading the Appeals Court decision, I concluded that her sentence was simply too long,” Polis wrote Sunday in a Substack post, where he condemned Peters’ crimes.

A bipartisan array of election officials, state prosecutors and lawmakers has condemned Polis for releasing Peters early. He was even censured by the Colorado Democratic Party, which said the commutation set a “dangerous and disappointing precedent.”

Peters’ early release marks a triumphant moment for the 2020 election denier movement and for Trump, who waged a long pressure campaign against Colorado over her incarceration. Polis said his decision wasn’t influenced by Trump’s actions — which included closing a Colorado-based climate lab, denying federal disaster assistance requests, vetoing a Colorado water project and pulling federal transportation funds.

Trump granted a symbolic federal pardon to Peters last year, but she had remained in prison under state charges. Peters is appealing her convictions, and she maintains her innocence.

CNN has reached out to Peters’ lawyers seeking comment.

Shortly after walking out of the La Vista Correctional Facility in Pueblo, Colorado, Peters appeared on Trump ally Steve Bannon’s podcast, where she doubled down on debunked conspiracy theories about US elections.

“I know that the Democrats are going to cheat, and no one’s really addressing the problem that I spent my time in prison as retribution for and that was exposing the election machines that allow the votes to be flipped,” Peters said.

She was referring to the long-debunked assertion that Dominion Voting Systems’ machines can fraudulently flip votes. This claim was at the heart of baseless claims of systemic cheating against Trump in 2020. And it’s what she was tying to prove when she breached her county’s equipment in 2021.

“I still have a fight to clear my name and bring out the truth of why they came after me the way they did,” Peters said.

Throughout her incarceration, Peters has stayed active on social media through allies and has continued spreading conspiracy theories about the legitimacy of the 2020 election, which Trump lost to Joe Biden.

But in her clemency application submitted to Polis, she acknowledged wrongdoing for the first time. She said: “I made a mistake four years ago. I misled the secretary of state when allowing a person to gain access to county voting equipment. That was wrong. Going forward, I will make sure that my actions always follow the law.”

In a letter to Peters granting clemency, Polis said her statement “demonstrates taking responsibility for your crimes.” Polis also told CNN in an interview on the day of the commutation that “she’s also expressed contrition now with this statement.”

But her lawyer Peter Ticktin told CNN in a recent interview that he doesn’t see it that way.

“I don’t think she indicated that she was feeling contrition and remorse. She basically was admitting to the fact that she could have done it better,” Ticktin said. “It’s very hard to be someone who has real contrition. There’s a difference between regret and contrition. It could have been done in such a way where she didn’t actually deceive anybody, and that was her mistake.”

In that vein, Peters and Ticktin have continued attacking election officials after her clemency. Peters recently posted on X that Colorado’s secretary of state, Democrat Jena Griswold, was engaged in a “cover up” and Ticktin said she deserves decades in prison. (Griswold has said she always upheld the law, and she staunchly opposed Peters’ release.)

“I will never back down, I will never give up, and I will never give in,” Peters wrote on May 22. “I will always stand for truth, transparency, and fairness in our elections.”

Fraudsters bought game-worn Kobe Bryant sneakers and Ferraris with taxpayer funds

In a secret federal law enforcement warehouse in Southern California, dozens of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and stacks of coveted sports memorabilia – like Mickey Mantle rookie cards and game-worn Kobe Bryant sneakers – offer a modest testament to the mountains of taxpayer money being illegally diverted through fraud, law enforcement officials told CBS News.

By some government estimates, at least $500 billion is lost to fraud schemes each year, though other sources, including those who consult with the government to track fraudulently-obtained funds, said the real figure is over $1 trillion. As the Trump administration has launched a crackdown on those cheating federal programs like Medicare, food assistance and hospice care, it is difficult to claw back the stolen funds, said Bill Essayli, the top federal prosecutor in Los Angeles.

“It should offend every American taxpayer that these people are taking advantage of the system,” Essayli said.

Seizing physical assets has been a first step in those efforts, Essayli said as he climbed the driveway of an eight-bedroom, ten-bathroom compound on an isolated Orange County hilltop – the former home to convicted serial fraudster Paul Randall.

“He was living like a king off us,”Essayli said.

Randall, who declined to be interviewed, was convicted of diverting more than $270 million in taxpayer funds in one of the largest California Medicaid fraud schemes in the state’s history. He pleaded guilty in April to wire fraud and faces up to 30 years in prison when he’s sentenced this summer.

Essayli said Randall was out on bond awaiting sentencing on another federal fraud charge, one of six prior fraud convictions, when he started this latest scheme.

“Obviously there’s a breakdown in the criminal justice system if this guy was able to have six convictions and never did any real prison time,” Essayli said.

The vast majority of the stolen funds move out of the country before authorities have a chance to confiscate it, said Haywood Talcove, the CEO of LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Government.

Talcove consults with the government on tracking illicit funds. He projects that $1 trillion is lost to fraud each year — and believes about 70% of that ends up in the hands of transnational criminal gangs.

“It goes to Russia, it goes to China, it goes to Nigeria, it goes to Romania,” Talcove said.

Talcove’s investigations have shown criminals are getting more sophisticated. “Taxpayers are funding transnational criminals who are using this money for horrible things — child trafficking, drugs, threats to our democracy,” he said.

Essayli said that federal law enforcement is working on ways to better find and recover the stolen funds. But with money easily converted to digital currency and channeled overseas, federal agents are at a disadvantage.

“That is why it is so important that the money never goes out in the first place; that’s why it’s important that we have systems in place to detect and prevent fraud,” he said.
