SANTA CLARITA, California, June 16 (Reuters) – As guests milled around a cavernous sound-stage that houses one of the ​sets from the Amazon Prime Video series “Fallout,” writer and producer Jonathan Nolan hailed the role tax incentives played in bringing ‌the production to California.

The first season of the series, which is a big-budget adaptation of a videogame set in a post-nuclear wasteland, was shot in New York. California was able to lure the production west in its second season, with $25 million in tax rebates.

“If the tax credit wasn’t here, it would be a non-starter and ​we wouldn’t be able to be here,” said Nolan, seated in a folding lawn chair placed on the set of a “Vault,” ​a subterranean fallout shelter decorated with the show’s retro-futuristic look.

Nolan played a prominent role in lobbying for California to ⁠approve $750 million in tax rebates to bring more film and television production to the state. He even went so far as to invite ​state legislators on set last year, to showcase how actors and craftspeople would benefit from the incentives.

“Fallout” remained in California for its third season, ​thanks to $42 million in tax credits on a budget of $166.3 million which allowed the production to hire nearly 600 crew members and 30 actors, according to the California Film Commission.

Nolan said he and others in the industry had become accustomed to boarding a plane to shoot in London, Budapest or Sydney, without worrying ​about the possible toll on Hollywood.

“People sort of laughed at the idea that Hollywood would ever stop being Hollywood — but I think the ​last five years, it really has,” Nolan said.

Entertainment industry employment has been declining since its peak in late-2022, presenting fewer opportunities for actors, writers, and the ‌scores of ⁠craftspeople — from carpenters to costumers to camera operators to caterers — who support film and television production.

California has been especially hard hit, shedding 17,234 jobs from 2019 through 2023, according to the Milken Institute. A combination of factors, including declining television advertising revenue and stagnating streaming growth, caused studios to seek less expensive places to make movies and series, it found.

The occupancy rate in Hollywood’s sound stages has fallen to 62% ​in the first half of 2025 ​from nearly full occupancy in ⁠2016, according to Film LA, the non-profit organization that coordinates filming in greater Los Angeles.

“That threatens to hollow out and destroy a 100-year cultural institution that is maybe one of the most important parts of ​American culture and our ability to broadcast our culture around the world,” Nolan said. “So, I think the ​rebate was essential ⁠in bringing us back.”

Actor Walton Goggins, who plays a dual role as Cooper Howard, a pre-war Hollywood actor known for starring in Western films, and a bounty hunter known as The Ghoul, told Reuters he feels grateful for the opportunity to work in Los Angeles.

“This job permeates every aspect of ⁠this city ​and so to be back here filming this show that employs this many ​people — artisans that are the best in the world at what they do, given the opportunity to operate at their highest level — I’m in awe,” Goggins said, adding, “I only ​hope that this tax credit expands so that more production can come back here.”

Newly released Pentagon and FBI records describe a series of orb sightings reported from the same area of the northeastern United States between at least October 2024 and June 2025, including one incident in which two witnesses reported seeing a glowing red sphere containing what appeared to be a basketball-sized “white plasma sun.”

The sightings are among dozens of records published through the Trump administration’s Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) Encounters, or PURSUE, a government-wide effort to declassify files related to UAPs.

According to records released Thursday, an eyewitness in October 2024 reported observing a “plasma-like sphere” hovering above a pond at an estimated distance of roughly 2,700 feet. Investigators said the luminous object intermittently changed shape and brightness, at times appearing to separate into smaller points of light. A second luminous point hovered above the water and did not appear consistent with a surface reflection. The object remained generally stationary for approximately 45 minutes before disappearing.

The video was captured on an iPhone and later analyzed and authenticated by the U.S. government, according to the records. The FBI assessed the eyewitness as highly credible.

The release is the latest installment of the Trump administration’s Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, or PURSUE, a transparency initiative launched after President Donald Trump directed federal agencies in February to review and declassify records related to unidentified anomalous phenomena. The program has produced a steady stream of files ranging from cases investigators believe may have conventional explanations to incidents that remain unresolved years later.

A second incident from the same general area occurred in July 2025, when a witness arrived home and noticed an intense bright light hovering below the tree line behind a residence. According to FBI interviews, the witness described the object as a red sphere roughly one meter in diameter containing a bright white center resembling a basketball-sized “plasma sun.”

A second witness separately came outside and reported seeing the same object. FBI records indicate the objects were estimated to be about 30 yards away and 20 feet to 30 feet above the ground.

Both witnesses said a second identical orb later appeared nearby. The objects moved together above the trees, changed altitude and direction, traveled in tandem and eventually appeared to merge into a single object before disappearing from view. The witnesses captured video footage of the sighting, and FBI agents later obtained photographs associated with the investigation.

According to the FBI, multiple reports and videos released through the latest tranche originated from the same general area in the northeastern United States.

Among the most significant cases included in the latest tranche was an unresolved 2023 incident near a sensitive national security site in the western United States involving six federal law enforcement agents who reported observing what they described as glowing orange “mother orbs” releasing smaller red objects into the night sky.

In a newly released assessment, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office said roughly 40% of the reported activity remains unexplained after analysts compared witness accounts against commercial and military flight logs, radar data, spatial estimates and ADS-B records while examining a range of possible explanations, including military aircraft, drones, U.S. government programs, foreign intelligence activity and environmental phenomena.

Analysts concluded military flare activity could plausibly account for a significant portion of the reported observations and assessed foreign adversary technology as highly unlikely, but determined that no single explanation fully accounted for all the reported activity. Investigators said “unrecognized technology” remained a provisional hypothesis for the unexplained portion of the case, while cautioning that the assessment was based primarily on witness testimony rather than technical or physical evidence.

The newly released files include five witness narratives, sketches and a notional map depicting four related incidents investigators grouped under the “Western U.S. Event,” including what they labeled “Orbs Launching Orbs,” a “Fiery Orb,” a “Dark Kite” and a “Translucent Kite.” The case is among the most extensively documented unresolved incidents included in the latest tranche.

Among the most unusual incidents in the latest PURSUE tranche was a February 2022 sighting near Colorado Springs, Colorado, in which five U.S. Army personnel reported seeing a shimmering object hovering above Cheyenne Mountain for up to three minutes.

According to witness accounts, the object appeared roughly the size of a large jet and resembled an angular, nonsymmetrical “potato” composed of irregular panels that slowly shifted and changed shape while remaining stationary above the mountain.

In a separate FBI interview conducted in 2024, a former Army intelligence officer who witnessed the event described the object as a creamy white, opalescent shape made up of what appeared to be articulating fish-scale-like panels. The witness told investigators the object remained perfectly still while the individual panels appeared to move in slow waves before the object suddenly vanished.

Witnesses estimated the object hovered 300 feet to 500 feet above Cheyenne Mountain before disappearing while they were actively observing it. Pentagon investigators ultimately concluded the sighting may have been caused by sunlight reflecting off snow-covered terrain and illuminating clouds near the mountain, though AARO described that assessment as low confidence because of uncertainty surrounding witness viewing angles, cloud cover and environmental conditions.

Taken together, the Colorado, western and northeastern incidents offer a snapshot of the diverse reports now being published through the Pentagon’s PURSUE program, ranging from cases investigators believe may have conventional explanations to incidents that remain unresolved after years of analysis.

The effort has drawn mixed reactions. Transparency advocates have welcomed the publication of records that were previously difficult for the public to access, while some researchers and former officials argue that many of the releases rely heavily on witness testimony and contain limited technical data that would allow independent analysts to verify government conclusions.

Former AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick has argued that unresolved cases often remain unresolved because investigators lack sufficient information to reach high-confidence conclusions.

At the same time, neither the Department of War nor AARO has concluded that any of the incidents released through PURSUE constitute evidence of extraterrestrial life, nonhuman intelligence or alien technology.

Government officials have repeatedly emphasized that an unresolved case simply means investigators lack sufficient information to determine a definitive cause. The records released to date document observations, investigations and assessments, but do not establish evidence of extraterrestrial origins.

Serena and Venus Williams to play doubles together again, at Wimbledon

London —Serena and Venus Williams are bringing their doubles partnership back at Wimbledon.

The All England Club announced a doubles wild card invitation on Tuesday for the sisters to take part in the tournament, which starts in less than two weeks.

The move comes after 44-year-old Serena recently returned to competition after nearly four years away from professional tennis.

Venus, who has still been competing sporadically, turns 46 on Wednesday.

The Williams sisters have won 14 Grand Slam titles together in doubles, including six at Wimbledon – the first of them in 2000 and the last in 2016.

Serena won her first doubles match with partner Victoria Mboko at Queen’s Club in London last week and was slated to play doubles with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Open later on Tuesday.

The Williams sisters last played doubles together at the 2022 U.S. Open, where they lost their opening match. That was the first time they’d played doubles together in 4-1/2 years.

Serena and Mboko won their opening match at Queen’s Club but then had to withdraw after Mboko injured her knee in a singles match.

Serena hasn’t ruled out a return in singles, as well, and one of the eight wild card spots for women’s singles was left as “to be announced.”

Other Wimbledon draws

Recent French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska received a singles wild card, as did six British women: Harriet Dart, Alicia Dudeney, Hannah Klugman, Mika Stojsavljevic, Katie Swan, and Mimi Xu.

Men’s singles wild cards went to Stan Wawrinka and Grigor Dimitrov and four British players: Jacob Fearnley, Arthur Fery, Jack Pinnington Jones and Toby Samuel.

Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion whose best result at Wimbledon was reaching the quarterfinals twice, plans to retire at the end of the year.

Dimotrov led eventual champion Jannik Sinner two sets to none in the round of 16 last year before having to retire early in the third due to an injured pectoral muscle. Dimitrov is now ranked No. 169.

Two more men’s singles wild cards were also left open.

In men’s doubles, a wild card went to the pairing of Alexander Bublik and Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios was a singles finalist in 2022.

Matteo Berrettini, a Wimbledon finalist in 2021, was left off the list despite a quarterfinal appearance at the French Open. He’s ranked No. 49 but was ranked outside the top 100 when Wimbledon’s entry list was established. Still, Berrettini could get direct entry into the main draw depending on withdrawals.

In this midterm election year, the new poll finds that among registered voters, Democrats narrowly outnumber Republicans, 31% to 28%, with 41% of voters saying they don’t identify with either party. While the margin is small, that’s a notable shift away from the GOP compared with 2024, when 34% of registered voters considered themselves Republicans, 31% Democrats and 35% said they didn’t consider themselves a part of either party.

Since 2024, younger voters, male voters and White voters without college degrees have shifted away from the GOP, but not necessarily toward the Democrats. In the new poll, 17% of voters younger than 45 say they consider themselves Republicans, down from 26% who said the same in 2024. But the share who call themselves Democrats is fairly steady at 33%, with 50% saying they don’t consider themselves a part of either party. There are similar patterns among men – young men in particular – and White voters without college degrees.

Who are political independents?

Independents are not all politically in the middle. Many at least lean toward one of the two major parties, and previous polling has identified several types of independents with different levels of political engagement and varying ideological views.

Demographically, independents stand out from partisans in several ways. Independents are notably younger than partisans – 63% of those who don’t affiliate with a party are younger than 50, compared with 52% of Democrats and 38% of Republicans. They are more apt to say they live in a city or urban area than Republicans (40% vs. 28%), but less likely to be city-dwellers than are Democrats (49%). And their incomes tilt a bit lower than partisans, with nearly half in this category saying their annual household income falls below $50,000.

They are also far more likely to be checked out of politics. Just 67% say they are registered to vote, compared with more than 80% each among Democrats and Republicans, and only 25% say they frequently seek out the latest political news.

The CNN poll was conducted among 2,480 adults nationwide by SSRS from May 7-31, using a combination of online and telephone interviews. The survey samples were originally drawn from two sources – an address-based sample and a random-digit dial sample of prepaid cell phone numbers – and combined. Respondents were contacted by mail, phone or text. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

WASHINGTON, June 16 (Reuters) – Georgia Republicans go to the polls Tuesday to select their candidate for U.S. Senate to take on incumbent Jon Ossoff, a rising Democratic star and potential presidential candidate in 2028.

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump endorsed ​U.S. Representative Mike Collins — and dubbing him “MAGA Mike” on Truth Social — over former football coach Derek Dooley in the state’s primary runoff.

FACING THE OSSOFF FUNDRAISING JUGGERNAUT

Ossoff awaits the winner of a runoff between Collins and Dooley. Trump endorsed Collins over the weekend, calling him a “WARRIOR and WINNER” who supported Trump “from the very beginning.”

“I don’t know Derek Dooley, and neither does ​anyone else, but he seems like a nice person,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Unfortunately, he has lived outside of Georgia for most of his life, didn’t vote in 2020 or 2016, and said ​that I lost Georgia in 2020 when, in actuality, the facts have now proven that I won by a lot!” Trump lost Georgia to Democrat Joe Biden ⁠in 2020 by 0.3 percentage points.

In response to the president’s endorsement of Collins, Dooley said he has “great respect” for Trump but cast himself as the outsider best positioned to beat Ossoff, according to media reports.

Either ​Republican will struggle to compete with Ossoff’s war chest, now flush with nearly $33 million compared to Collins’ $1.2 million and Dooley’s $1.7 million. Ossoff’s team has said his campaign is powered by hundreds of thousands of small donors, with ​average donations each quarter ranging from $32 to $38.

Georgia and Michigan are the only Trump-won states Senate Democrats are defending in November’s midterm elections. Democrats would need to net four seats to win control of the chamber.

TRUMP’S CLOUT IN THE SOUTH

Trump will be looking to keep his streak alive on Tuesday after victories by candidates he endorsed in recent primaries.

In other runoffs on Tuesday, Trump endorsed Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones’ gubernatorial bid. In Alabama, Trump has endorsed Representative Barry Moore’s Senate campaign over former Navy SEAL ​Jared Hudson.

Jones faces businessman Rick Jackson in the race to succeed Kemp. The winner will run against Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, a former Atlanta mayor and past adviser to Biden.

While Trump may be picking winners in the ​primaries, the question remains whether his candidates can win in the general election in November, particularly when Trump himself isn’t on the ballot.

“This is not going to be a particularly good year to be a Republican in this state,” said ‌Charles Bullock, a ⁠political science professor at the University of Georgia. “Democrats could win the governorship.”

DC CONSIDERS A DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST

With the departures of Mayor Muriel Bowser and congressional delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington will elect a new mayor for the first time since 2014 and a new non-voting delegate for the first time since 1990.

Leading in the polls for mayor is Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist in the mold of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Last week, Trump said he “wouldn’t like it” if Lewis George were elected mayor and threatened to “take back Washington and run it on the federal basis” if she wins.

Her top opponent in the crowded race is former Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. The ​two have spent nearly $6 million combined.

The top candidates to ​succeed Norton, 89, are Councilmembers Brooke Pinto and ⁠Robert White, and former Democratic National Committee deputy finance chair Kinney Zalesne.

The primary winners in both races are expected to win the general election in the heavily Democratic district.

STATE VOTES ON MINIMUM WAGE

Oklahoma voters will choose whether to approve a ballot measure that would raise the state’s $7.25 minimum wage to $15 by 2029. Republican Governor Kevin ​Stitt and

more than 100 Republican state legislators
oppose the increase, with lawmakers saying its passage would lead to “severe” economic fallout, such as job losses and rising ​prices.

But not all Oklahoma Republicans ⁠agree: Republican Labor Commissioner Leslie Osborn supports the ballot measure,

telling a local news outlet
everyday costs have risen while Oklahoma’s minimum wage hasn’t changed since 2009.

“You absolutely cannot pay the gas to get to a job, have an apartment and live extremely frugally. You’re going to have to rely on government programs,” she said. “As a Republican, we should want people … to stand on their own two feet.”

THE RACE TO SUCCEED SWALWELL

On Tuesday, voters in the San Francisco area will ⁠hold an initial ​election to choose candidates to complete the term of Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell, who earlier this year ended his campaign for ​California governor and resigned from Congress amid sexual misconduct allegations. Swalwell denied the allegations.

Among the 11 candidates are State Senator Aisha Wahab and Bay Area Rapid Transit Board President Melissa Hernandez, both Democrats. The top two finishers, regardless of party, will advance to an August 18 ​special general election to serve through early January.

Wahab and Hernandez have already advanced to the November general election for a new full two‑year term in the Bay Area district.
