    2026-08-20T08:00:29.099Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/20/politics/flawed-census-report-alleged-noncitizen-voting

Experts slam ‘flawed’ Trump administration Census report on alleged noncitizen voting

    2026-08-20T08:00:29.099Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/20/politics/flawed-census-report-alleged-noncitizen-voting

Former Census Bureau leaders, statisticians and voting-rights advocates are raising alarms about an unusual, unsigned new report posted on the agency’s website that claims tens of thousands of noncitizens voted in the 2020 presidential election.

President Donald Trump touted the results Tuesday on Truth Social, saying the bureau had proved that more than 24,000 noncitizens illegally voted in 2020 after analyzing 128 million individual voter records.

“I WON THE ELECTION!” Trump wrote, repeating his unsubstantiated claim that widespread fraud cost him the 2020 race. He predicted the number would “explode” once analysts processed the remaining 32 million voter records.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, whose department oversees the Census Bureau, later posted, “It’s just the beginning,” predicting the next analysis “will likely show tens of thousands of additional illegal voters.”

Even if the report is accurate, 24,000 votes would amount to less than 0.02% of the roughly 160 million ballots cast in 2020. Joe Biden won the national popular vote by more than 7 million votes.

The findings fall well below Biden’s victory margins in the most closely contested states:

    • Arizona: 1,100 alleged noncitizen votes; Biden won by 10,457
    • Georgia: 400 alleged noncitizen votes; Biden won by 11,779
    • Wisconsin: 500 alleged noncitizen votes; Biden won by 20,682

The report also does not — and cannot — say which candidates those voters supported because ballot selections are secret.

The disputed findings come amid growing concern about political pressure on the Census Bureau, which has traditionally been led by career statisticians and operated independently of the White House.

Earlier this year, the administration installed a group of partisan analysts from the Trump-aligned America First Policy Institute inside the Census Bureau, according to three former bureau officials who served under Trump. AFPI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Census Bureau, Commerce Department and White House did not respond to a request for comment.

The administration has intensified its effort to find evidence backing Trump’s longstanding claims of widespread voter fraud. In a primetime address last month, Trump cited a trove of newly declassified documents to claim the US election system has gaping vulnerabilities that leave future contests open to foreign interference and widespread noncitizen voting.

The Census Bureau analysis compared a commercial voter database with federal records from the IRS, Social Security Administration, State Department and Department of Homeland Security, according to the document released Tuesday.

The commercial data came from Data-Clear, a Virginia-based firm that received a $649,500 federal contract in 2024 to obtain voter registration data, federal records show.

Analysts used the Census Bureau’s system for linking the records, searching for individual voters who match noncitizen records in the federal government databases.

Tuesday’s report, dubbed a “beginning analysis,” immediately raised red flags among former senior Census Bureau officials. Publishing such a document without named authors or contributors is highly unusual, they said, and could indicate that career staff were sidelined.

John M. Abowd, the bureau’s chief scientist from 2016 to 2022, told CNN the report’s statistical finding is too small to distinguish from routine matching errors and claim as definitive proof of noncitizen voters.

Record-linking systems can produce false matches, even when they are well designed, he said. The 24,000 noncitizen matches represent about 0.019% of the 128 million records that were analyzed.

“None of the professional researchers that I knew or worked with at the Census Bureau would make such a claim from that study,” Abowd said. “Professional researchers would have reported that result and given it some context.”

Former Census Bureau Director Robert Santos, who held the role from 2022 until resigning in the first days of Trump’s second term, described the publication as an obvious “hijack by the White House.”

“I was shocked and dismayed that a document of this sort – and I refuse to call it a report – would appear on a Census Bureau website,” Santos told CNN. “It is clearly a product of White House and Department of Commerce analysts.”

He said another “fatal flaw” of the analysis is that it rests on a faulty assumption: that federal, state and local records are completely accurate.

Voter files often contain outdated or incorrect information. Those problems may have been worse during the Covid-19 pandemic, when election offices faced shutdowns, staffing shortages and other disruptions.

“There’s every reason to believe that the quality of the data that’s being used is highly suspect, because it was not business as usual when those data were being developed,” Santos told CNN.

A typical bureau analysis would spell out those caveats and limitations, the former officials said. Tuesday’s document did not.

Lutnick’s department has taken on a growing role in Trump’s push to root out alleged voter fraud and reshape federal election rules. He stood beside Trump in the Oval Office as the president signed an executive order in March directing his administration to compile state-by-state citizenship lists and ordering the Postal Service to step up scrutiny of mail ballots.

Last month, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said he was working with Lutnick to use federal funding as leverage to pressure states to adopt Trump-backed election reforms.

“Meaning that if these states want a grant and they want to be reimbursed to run federal elections, they’re going to have to implement security issues,” Mullin told reporters.

The administration has increasingly tapped federal databases to bolster its search for noncitizen voting. Last month, Mullin claimed DHS had reviewed public voter rolls and found more than 250,000 potential noncitizens registered across New Jersey, Nevada, California and Pennsylvania — a figure some officials in those states disputed, demanding details about how DHS calculated it.

“It’s the same old story of using flawed databases and ways to generate a storyline that the president will like, but actually doesn’t align with reality,” said Andrew Walchuk, Policy Director and Counsel for Voting and Fair Representation at Common Cause, a non-partisan voting-rights advocacy organization.

Walchuk called the latest Census Bureau report a “farce” intended to undermine trust in elections.

The voter information that Data-Clear obtained from states and provided to the Census Bureau included dates of birth where available but not Social Security numbers, Data-Clear’s President Carolyn Carlson told CNN.

Experts questioned whether the analysis of that data contained enough specific information about individual voters to guard against false-positive results.

Trump’s Justice Department has sued 30 states in an effort to obtain unredacted voter records, including driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers, but has been repeatedly rebuffed by the courts. The states fighting the DOJ cite federal and state privacy laws that they say protect voters’ personal information.

Carlson said the firm had no control or input into how the Census analyzed the data the firm provided and referred questions about the report’s findings to the agency.

Michael McDonald, an elections expert at the University of Florida, said the numbers cited in the Census report likely include people who are in fact US citizens. “We should treat these 24,000 as allegations, not as definitive proof of noncitizens,” he said.

“Election officials know that there are pitfalls in the data where individuals may be alleged to be a noncitizen but are actually indeed a citizen, and they can provide proof of their citizenship,” he said.

Typically, local election officials will reach out to the voters to give them an opportunity to provide evidence that they are qualified to remain on the voting rolls before removing their names, he added.

“This alleged analysis based on Census data fails the laugh test,” said David Becker, a former Justice Department lawyer who now oversees the nonprofit Center for Election Innovation & Research. “Census data cannot be reliably matched to public voter data, as it lacks any unique matching identifiers to compare to those public voter records.”

CNN’s Ethan Cohen contributed to this report.

The new kingmakers: Crypto, AI and betting firms fuel record spending on the 2026 midterms

    2026-08-20T10:04:54.532Z / Reuters

    • Summary
    • New money pours in from billionaires from industries that barely existed a generation ago
    • US companies spent $517 million on 2026 House and Senate races in 15 months
    • Critics say spending risks amplifying influence of a small group of niche interests, elbowing out pocketbook issues

NEW YORK, Aug 20 (Reuters) – A handful of billionaires and companies are driving corporate spending in U.S. midterm elections this year, and they aren’t the usual power brokers who have sat atop the political food chain in Washington in previous decades.

Crypto companies, artificial intelligence firms and online betting have emerged as the biggest industries shaping the 2026 midterm races, driving a record amount of business spending on congressional contests, according to campaign finance watchdogs and interviews with more than a dozen political strategists from both parties.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

The new money surging into U.S. politics comes from a fresh class of billionaires hailing from industries that barely existed a generation ago, occupying territory traditionally held by Wall Street, along with the pharmaceutical, oil and media industries, strategists from both parties say.

As lawmakers across the country press for ‌more scrutiny and regulation of these industries, their founders are deploying their newfound wealth to win allies, shape rules and push back on those efforts.

U.S. companies have spent an unprecedented $517 million on the 2026 U.S. House and Senate races in the 15 months through the end of the first quarter, exceeding the record $461 million in corporate spending over two years for the 2024 elections, data compiled by corporate accountability nonprofit group Public Citizen shows.

And that’s before the blitz of campaign spending expected in the closing stretch of the November 3 elections, when Democrats hope to wrest control of both the House and Senate.

“The scale of corporate spending in this election cycle is unlike anything we’ve seen previously,” said Rick Claypool, research director at Public Citizen.

Critics argue the spending risks amplifying the influence of a small group of niche interests and allowing issues like crypto and AI regulation, data-center energy demands and online gambling oversight to crowd out more pocketbook issues like high gas prices and healthcare. Supporters say it gives emerging sectors a voice other corporate interests have long enjoyed.

“When corporate money can inundate the political discourse, there’s less room for talk about what people really care about,” Claypool said. “Instead, you have the situation that we have in Congress now where they are spending an inordinate amount of time discussing the niche regulatory policy problems related to crypto while people really just want cheaper groceries.”

Still, there are limits to what money can do. Polls show a majority of Americans feel there is too much money in politics and progressive Democratic Senate candidates like James Talarico in Texas and Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan have successfully built campaigns on the argument that wealthy donors and companies exert too much influence in Washington.

    NO LIMITS

Together, crypto, tech and online gaming industry donations accounted for at least $294 million of the corporate spending on midterm races from January 1, 2025 through the first quarter, Public Citizen found.

In an approach pioneered by the crypto industry in the last election cycle, these industries have structured their campaign giving through a vast network of so-called super PACs, affiliate PACs — which get their money from the super PACs — and dark money nonprofits, which do not have to disclose who their donors are. Companies and founders often donate across those networks, as well as directly to specific candidates.

The groups can take unlimited sums but cannot give directly to or coordinate with candidates. Instead, they can pay for advertising, organize voter drives and sponsor campaign rallies.

Executives running those companies have directly spent millions more, such as the

    more than $90 million,
SpaceX founder Elon Musk has already put toward the 2026 federal elections — with plans to spend far more by November. Google co-founder Sergey Brin also spent over $106 million in California fighting a proposed wealth tax among other state issues, federal and state filings show. Brin and Musk did not return requests for comment.

Meta, which operates Facebook and Instagram, has donated $65 million to four different super PACs to spend backing candidates from both parties on state races in California, Texas, Illinois and elsewhere. The company declined to comment for this article.

Counting all political spending, including donations from billionaires like Musk, labor groups and social causes, a record $11.6 billion is expected to be spent on political ads for the midterms, breaking the 2023-2024 cycle’s previous record of $11.2 billion, according to political advertising research firm AdImpact.

    POLITICAL DISRUPTORS

Crypto companies Coinbase and Ripple, along with investor Andreessen Horowitz, spent heavily in 2024 through their Fairshake super PAC to help unseat longtime incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown from his Senate seat in Ohio.

The crypto industry’s strategy was so effective that year that Public Citizen called its super PAC Fairshake a corporate Death Star that could “annihilate individual candidates.” Its playbook — which bucked tradition by refusing to align with solely one party — is being copied now by Big Tech, sports betting and other industries, Democratic and Republican strategists say.

Instead, the industry openly backed candidates that supported its policies — regardless of party — and spent millions to end the political careers of those who didn’t.

As then-chair of the Senate Banking Committee, Brown was one of the industry’s most ‌vocal critics in Congress, but strategists say he’s been quiet on crypto as he seeks a return to the Senate, even conciliatory. Campaign manager Patrick Eisenhauer said in a statement to Reuters that Brown “recognizes that cryptocurrency is part of America’s economy” and is keeping an open mind.

Fairshake started the year with a $193 million war chest, and has about $130 million left to spend, filings show. It was financed almost entirely by Coinbase and Ripple as well as California venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

That firm’s co-founders Ben Horowitz and Marc Andreessen have each donated about $4 million of their personal funds so far this election cycle, most of which went to U.S. President Donald Trump’s MAGA Inc. super PAC, while their investment firm has given more than $81 million to mostly crypto and AI PACs, according to federal election records analyzed by Reuters. At least $23.8 million of that went to Fairshake. The firm and its co-founders declined to comment through a spokesman.

Ripple declined to comment. Coinbase did not respond to a request for comment.

    AI ENTERS THE RACE

AI barely registered in the 2024 elections, but has already made its presence felt this time around.

Political groups backed by AI companies OpenAI and Anthropic — which want different types of regulatory oversight — or their executives spent more than $23 million on two competing Democrats in a staunchly liberal New York City district in June alone, according to campaign finance records.

“It was basically two AI groups having it out with each other and the candidates were secondary,” said Brendan Glavin, director at nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog OpenSecrets.

AI super PAC Leading the Future has raised $140 million for the midterms, a person familiar with the group’s funding said, thanks in part to substantial donations from OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman and his wife Anna, along with Andreessen Horowitz.

OpenAI and the Brockmans declined to comment. The company has

    previously said,
it doesn’t finance or direct Leading the Future’s activities and that Brockman, his wife and other employees are free to donate in a personal capacity. The couple has also separately donated $25 million to MAGA Inc., filings show.

“We want to be explicit: No outside political group speaks for OpenAI or represents our company’s views,” the company said in June.

Anthropic has donated at least $40 million in this election cycle through a dark money nonprofit called Public First Action, which has raised $100 million so far, according to a spokesman who declined to disclose the other donors. About half of its funds go toward elections through two aligned PACs, he said.

The company, which referred questions for this article to the group, is also linked to a super PAC called Public First that has raised an additional $3.9 million, of which $1 million came from Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei, federal filings show. Anthropic additionally runs a small traditional PAC called AnthroPAC that takes donations from employees and can directly give to campaigns.

The company has defended its donations to the nonprofit group, saying they are being used to educate the public on policies rather than to support or oppose specific candidates.

“They’ve emulated a lot of what crypto did in 2024,” Glavin said, of the AI industry’s efforts to back candidates seen as supportive while ignoring traditional party lines.

Online sports betting is also copying that playbook as it comes under increased scrutiny and regulatory pressure.

DraftKings, FanDuel, Fanatics and UK-based sportsbook bet365 have donated more than $72 million to the midterms so far, making the industry the third-largest corporate donor in this cycle, Public Citizen estimates. They are directing the bulk of the money through two affiliate PACs — American Conservative Fund and American Future — to state races where the industry faces the most regulation, filings show.

Prediction market Polymarket separately donated $1 million in June through its corporate parent Blockratize Inc. to a Republican super PAC called the Congressional Leadership Fund, which is backed by House Speaker Mike Johnson, filings show.

The betting platforms did not return requests for comment.

Campaign finance watchdogs say the amount of money pouring into this election cycle is staggering.

“One-third of the corporate money that’s been spent since 2010 has been spent in this election cycle and it’s not even over yet,” Claypool said. “The amount of corporate money that’s been poured into these elections is unprecedented.”

Former GOP gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon is sounding the alarm on her belief that Democratic Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s opposition to Sharia law bans, association with far-left streamer Hasan Piker and progressive policies will “permanently” change America.

“This is not, if this person gets in, how much damage can they do in six years?” Dixon told Fox News Digital.

“This is someone who fundamentally disagrees with the Constitution and the founding of this country and has come out and said the founding of this was wrong and he disagrees with this. This is somebody who wants to go into government to permanently change America.”

Dixon highlighted El-Sayed’s past opposition to Sharia law bans, saying Americans need to know where he stands.

“This is a guy who has gone out, and he’s done speeches on why it is a terrible thing to ban Sharia law. That, to me, the average American is terrified of the idea of groups coming in and taking over our culture and saying that they are going to change how we live and how women are treated,” she said.

During a 2022 speech to the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Oklahoma chapter, El-Sayed said efforts to ban Sharia law were rooted in white supremacy and driven by “the same exact forces” behind the forced removal of Native Americans and the destruction of Black Wall Street.

“That comparison, to me, is something that the American people, and certainly the people of Michigan, need to know that that’s how closely aligned he is with the Islamist values and the fact that he would bring Sharia law into our lives and defend it in that way,” Dixon said.

Sharia law is a body of Islamic religious principles governing personal, family and financial matters, with interpretations varying on issues including child marriage, women’s rights and criminal penalties.

Turning to El-Sayed’s recent campaign appearances with Piker, Dixon took aim at El-Sayed for refusing to distance himself from the popular streamer.

Piker, who has about 10 million social media followers, has faced backlash for saying that “America deserved 9/11,” as well as for controversial comments about Hamas and the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and for recently wearing an outfit resembling that of former communist dictator Mao Zedong.

“At the same time, [he is] campaigning with a man who says America deserved 9/11 and refusing to back down on that,” Dixon said.

HASAN PIKER CALLS FOR DEMOCRATS WHO OPPOSE ABDUL EL-SAYED TO BE ‘PUNISHED’

El-Sayed pushed back on criticism of his association with Piker during an April “Fox & Friends” appearance, saying, “[Just] because you appear with somebody, doesn’t mean you agree with them on everything.”

But Dixon said El-Sayed’s ties to Piker and stance on Sharia law remain issues that “you can’t ignore.”

“Everybody I’ve talked to, I’ve said, this is about whether or not we preserve America, or we have somebody who’s completely against everything that we are, and it goes well beyond what we’ve seen with Democrat and Republican,” she said.

Looking back at El-Sayed’s 2007 University of Michigan commencement speech, where he served as the student speaker alongside former President Bill Clinton and told the crowd they must have “the audacity to believe we can change the world,” Dixon said. “What he really meant was destroy America.”

The concerns over El-Sayed’s candidacy also extend to his policies, with Dixon arguing that his economic agenda goes “beyond socialism.” She said the Democratic Party has “openly embraced” socialism, adding that El-Sayed “wants government that will take over people.”

“You won’t thrive,” Dixon said. “Everybody will be equally suffering.”

Dixon said El-Sayed will struggle to unite a divided Democratic Party and appeal to working-class Michigan voters.

“The working-class Democrats are not socialists,” Dixon said. El-Sayed has previously denied being a socialist, saying, “I believe in capitalism, I just believe that capitalism has to be regulated.”

Dixon cautioned that Democrats who opposed El-Sayed in the primary could back him through straight-ticket voting in November, which lets voters select one party’s candidates with a single choice.

“The question that you’re really asking is, will people hold their nose and straight-ticket vote?” Dixon said.

But Dixon said some voters could “cross over” to support Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers.

“It’s going to be an interesting dynamic. It means the Republicans have to work very hard,” she said.

El-Sayed is facing Rogers in November for the seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, a race that could help determine control of the Senate.
