    2026-06-26T10:00:26.911Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/26/politics/john-bolton-plead-guilty

Trump foe John Bolton is set to plead guilty. Here’s why the case didn’t fall apart

    2026-06-26T10:00:26.911Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/26/politics/john-bolton-plead-guilty

As several criminal investigations into President Donald Trump’s foes continue to flail, federal prosecutors are now ushering one of his biggest critics to a conviction.

Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton has agreed to plead guilty Friday to charges that he unlawfully retained sensitive national security information — marking a rare win in the Justice Department’s list of prosecutions against the president’s political enemies.

While several US attorneys have attempted to stand up cases against well-known political figures that Trump dislikes, the Bolton plea deal was secured by an understated but effective career prosecutor in Maryland, Kelly Hayes, who has been serving as US attorney since shortly after Trump took office last year.

“Everybody’s pleasantly surprised she’s still in the job,” one person who knows the office well said this week. “In some ways, she’s been trying to keep her head down … A lot of US attorney’s Offices tried to attract attention” of the White House.

Unlike cases against Trump’s other political enemies, like former FBI Director James Comey, Bolton’s case maintained support of career prosecutors and investigators.

Bolton’s plea deal — in which he admits to sharing sensitive national security information with his wife and daughter — amounts to one felony count that could result in prison time. The maximum sentence for the charge is five years.

Bolton has also agreed to pay a fine of a more than $2 million, sources told CNN. That fine amount could claw back much of the money Bolton earned from the sale of his memoir in 2020, which was deeply critical of Trump and which prompted the president to attack him publicly.

Maryland US Attorney Kelly Hayes’ approach, and the Bolton case itself, are viewed more seriously than the indictments and investigations of others who have faced federal charges at Trump’s urging, several sources familiar with the case and the office have told CNN.

Hayes also previously faced some pressure out of Washington, DC, to investigate California Sen. Adam Schiff, who hasn’t been charged with any crime. Assistant US attorneys in the office looked closely at the possibility of charging the senator related to his mortgage applications, and explained their hesitations to Justice Department leadership, people familiar with it told CNN. Schiff has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Hayes was able to remove herself from political pressure, largely by staying out of the political limelight of the Trump era, and maintained relationships with Justice Department leaders, people familiar with the office say.

Bolton, in the end, is expected to admit to only a sliver of what federal law enforcement investigated. The plea agreement is narrowly focused on the information he is accused of sending to his wife and daughter.

The indictment accused him of 18 violations – eight counts of transmitting national defense information and 10 instances of illegal retention. His plea agreement will cut that down to one count of illegally retaining national defense information.

Bolton’s case, had it gone to trial, could have dragged significant classified information into the public eye.

Part of his decision to plead guilty was driven by a wish to avoid a trial — specifically one that had the potential to publicize sensitive information, according to a person familiar with his thinking.

In comments Bolton made after he was charged in October, he likened his prosecution to the horrific abuses of Joseph Stalin’s secret police and claimed he was “the latest target in weaponizing the Justice Department.”

Yet since the charges were unveiled last fall, the case has been viewed — even by critics of the Justice Department — as a legitimate prosecution decision.

Judge Theodore Chuang in Greenbelt, Maryland, will oversee his plea hearing on Friday and will likely ultimately sentence Bolton at a later date.

It’s expected that Bolton will advocate for no prison time, and the Justice Department may seek to jail him, setting up a major showdown at the sentencing, people familiar with the case say.

A Justice Department spokesperson on Thursday said that Bolton’s deal to plead guilty to a single criminal charge “is a common practice … and is in line with current DOJ charging and pleading policy.”

The spokesperson added that Bolton’s behavior that isn’t ultimately part of the charge on the books may be factored into conduct the judge reviews at his sentencing.

Bolton was accused of sending summaries and notes that included classified information to himself and to his immediate family at a time where he was keeping his own “archives,” and was frustrated by Trump’s leadership. The president ultimately fired Bolton in September 2019.

The former national security adviser discussed the notes extensively with his wife and daughter, as if they were editors, according to the indictment.

Then Bolton’s email account was hacked by Iranians. In 2021, his assistant reported it to the FBI, saying the hacker was threatening to expose sensitive government information, according to court filings.

“Good luck Mr. Mustache!” one message said, according to a person who described investigative documents.

The FBI and national security lawyers in Maryland and Justice Department headquarters formally opened an investigation in 2022 during the Biden administration.

Investigators soon discovered the diary-like entries he was sending himself — essentially his own notes on secret information he was learning during his time in the Trump White House, according to the indictment.

The case moved forward substantially last summer when investigators searched both his home in Maryland and his office in Washington, DC.

But not all of what they found played into the criminal allegations.

For instance, investigators recovered several documents from Bolton’s office that they believed could be classified or confidential. Those included plans and memos related to the US mission to the United Nations and diplomatic security during the 2000-2001 presidential transition, and records with headings that indicated they were about weapons of mass destruction. Bolton was in the State Department and was UN ambassador during the Bush administration.

The years-old records never became part of the case that Bolton faced.

Another part of the investigation into Bolton hinged on how he published his memoir of his time in the Trump White House, after a comprehensive review process where the Trump administration hadn’t given him the final approval to publish.

Ultimately, no classified information was included in the book.

“Bolton acquitted himself honorably and legally in the pre-publication review process,” Michael Bromwich, the attorney for Bolton’s pre-publication reviewer Ellen Knight, told CNN this week. “It was the way he handled classified information outside that process … that he will admit to. It was sloppy and illegal but not sinister.”

Nude portrait by Amedeo Modigliani sets record at auction; nude painting by Sigmund Freud’s grandson sells for $38.8 million

    Updated on: June 26, 2026 / 7:01 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

The first part of a London auction of a museum-worthy private art collection raked in $392.6 million Wednesday, powered by an Amedeo Modigliani nude portrait that set a new European record. Meanwhile, a painting of a nude woman by a grandson of Sigmund Freud fetched nearly $39 million.

Forty-eight works by artists including Picasso, Magritte and Klimt, amassed by Joe Lewis, the ex-owner of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, were auctioned on Wednesday and Thursday.

Lewis, 89, transferred his majority stake in the London football club to a family trust in 2022 and is now worth £5.8 billion, according to The Sunday Times Rich List.

The Modigliani painting “Nu assis au collier” (Seated Nude Wearing a Necklace) sold for $63.9 million, the highest price achieved for a work by the artist sold at auction in Europe, Sotheby’s said.

Gustav Klimt’s full-length society portrait “Bildnis Gertrud Loew” achieved the second highest price of the evening. Pursued by seven bidders, it sold to a private collector from Asia for $47.9 million.

Lucian Freud’s “Sleeping by the Lion Carpet” achieved $38.8 million. A nude depiction of his model and muse Sue Tilley, the work had been held in the Lewis Collection since it was acquired from Acquavella Galleries in 1996, the year it was completed.

“Mona Lisa wasn’t alive when she became famous — but I am,” Tilley, now 69, told the Wall Street Journal.

Tilley was working in an unemployment office when she met the artist, who is a grandson of the famed psychologist Sigmund Freud. The paintings he made of her in the 1990s are now among the most famous in modern art — and the most valuable.

“It did change my life,” Tilley told The Associated Press last month as she sat in front of the 7 ½-foot-high nude image of herself in the auction house showroom. “Who would have thought I’d be in Sotheby’s?”

Lewis also bought paintings by artists of the Vienna Secession movement such as Egon Schiele, and modernist and surrealist works by Rene Magritte and Pablo Picasso.

The 23 works that go under the hammer Thursday include Picasso’s “Buste de femme” (Bust of a woman) from 1938, depicting French artist Dora Maar, valued at £12-18 million.

The current auction sale record for a single private collection in Europe was set in 2009 by the art collection of the late fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berge.

It had an estimate of 200-300 million euros, but the works eventually sold at Christie’s for 373.9 million euros (then about £333 million).

In March, four other paintings from the Lewis Collection by British artists from the School of London group, including Freud and Bacon, sold for £35.8 million in a packed Sotheby’s saleroom.

In a return to blockbuster art sales, auctions in New York this spring set record prices for works by Jackson Pollock, Constantin Brancusi and Mark Rothko.

    2026-06-26T10:00:27.693Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/26/politics/supreme-court-temporary-protected-status-haitians

这些移民 revitalized(振兴了)诸如俄亥俄州斯普林菲尔德这样的社区。

After Supreme Court’s TPS decision, more than a million immigrants face scramble to stay in US

    2026-06-26T10:00:27.693Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/26/politics/supreme-court-temporary-protected-status-haitians

Until Thursday morning, hundreds of thousands of Haitians were legally living and working in the United States, along with thousands of Syrians. Now, their work permits are set to expire and their deportation protections will be terminated, throwing them in legal limbo.

The abrupt change in fate stems from the Supreme Court decision which found that the Department of Homeland Security had broad discretion in determining when to extend or terminate a form of humanitarian relief known as Temporary Protected Status.

It was a major victory for the Trump administration and its mass deportation pledge. And while the case was focused on the roughly 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians who have TPS protection, its repercussions stand to affect hundreds of thousands of additional nationals from 11 other countries. The shockwaves will be felt throughout the communities where they live and the industries in which they work.

“It would be the largest dedocumentization event of people in US history,” said Ahilan Arulanantham, who argued the Syrian TPS case before the Supreme Court and is a law professor at UCLA School of Law.

In a 6-3 decision, the court said lower courts had no ability to overrule DHS’s decisions on the TPS designation, which allows nationals from certain countries that are experiencing humanitarian or natural crises to legally live and work in the US as long as the TPS designation is valid.

Seventeen countries have TPS designation. The Trump administration has moved to end that status for 13 of them.

The court’s decision on Temporary Protected Status was one of two immigration-related wins it handed to the Trump administration on Thursday. In a separate decision, also 6-3, the court cleared the way for the Trump administration to resume a controversial policy that allowed it to systematically turn away migrants from the southern border.

Combined, the decisions give the administration — and those that follow — greater latitude on who is allowed to be in the United States.

“Thanks to these decisions, we now have several more important tools to continue securing our borders,” said Department of Homeland Security General Counsel James Percival in a statement.

And potentially the biggest immigration-related decision from the Supreme Court remains pending: it is due to rule shortly on the Trump administration’s executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship as it’s been understood for more than century. The citizenship of hundreds of thousands of babies born in the US to certain non-citizen parents hangs in the balance.

While both of Thursday’s decisions have wide-ranging implications, the effects of the court’s TPS decision are likely to be felt more immediately, given that crossings at the US southern border remain low. It’s unclear when the stripping of protections will happen, making TPS beneficiaries vulnerable for removal, though it’s expected to unfold over the course of months.

Legal challenges against the administration over revoking TPS for multiple countries will likely be dismissed because of the court’s decision – allowing the administration to move forward with its plans. That means that people who are protected from deportation under designations that the administration has moved to revoke would have those protections stripped, including their work permits.

The Trump administration has argued that TPS designations were always meant to be temporary, and that citizens from countries which are included under the designations have taken advantage of protections against deportation far past when it was safe to return to their homes.

But Haiti has experienced decades worth of natural disasters, political turmoil and violence that has destabilized the country. Since the assassination of its president in 2021, the country has essentially been operating under gang control.

Haiti’s original TPS designation stemmed from a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in 2010. At the time, DHS determined Haitian nationals already in the US should be granted temporary protections from being sent back to their country, given the conditions following that earthquake.

That relief has been extended, most recently after President Jovenel Moïse’s 2021 assassination, until being terminated by the Trump administration.

Thursday’s ruling also came against the backdrop of a pair of earthquakes – the type of disasters that previous administrations would have considered making a country eligible for TPS – that struck Venezuela, killing scores and wounding hundreds.

Former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem moved to terminate TPS for Venezuelans in the United States. As of Thursday, DHS, which is now led by Secretary Markwayne Mullin, is not planning to reverse course and extend protections to Venezuelans in the US in the wake of this week’s earthquakes, according to a US official.

Immigration attorneys are urging people from the affected countries to seek any other legal immigration pathways as quickly as possible.

“Do not wait until you are being arrested by ICE to think about this,” said Katie Kersh, managing attorney at Advocates for Basic Legal Equality in Dayton, Ohio. “The immigration system moves very slowly. It’s very difficult to get something done as an emergency at the last minute.”

The future of TPS holders currently living in the United States could vary based on a person’s circumstances. Some may have options to remain legally in the United States, said Geoffrey Pipoly, one of the attorneys who represented Haitian TPS holders in the case that was heard before the Supreme Court.

“It’s not an all or nothing thing. It’s going to depend on individual facts and circumstances whether they have a right to remain. It’s not a question I can answer in general, it’s going to be case by case,” he said.

But, he added, the consequences could be dire for those who are deported.

“Many, many people are going to die violent, needless deaths. That’s the bottom line. That’s the thing that’s kept me up nights for the past eight months,” Pipoly said.

Some Republicans have warned against the Trump administration’s push to end TPS for Haitians. Rep. Mike Lawler, a New York Republican, said in a post on X that, while he has never questioned the president’s ability to end TPS designations, he disagrees with the push to end the one for Haitians “at this time.”

“The situation on the ground in Haiti is a humanitarian and political disaster and continues to warrant an extension,” Lawler, whose district contains a large Haitian diaspora, wrote.

Advocates have asked Congress to consider legislation that would extend TPS for Haitians through the Trump administration.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio, who has strongly supported Haitian TPS holders, called Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling “a mistake” that will hurt the state and its economy, as well as the nation. The immigrants have revitalized communities such as Springfield, Ohio,

“As a result of today’s ruling, the over 10,000 Haitians who have been living in Ohio (mostly in the Springfield area) legally through TPS will now be here illegally and will be subject to immediate deportation,” DeWine said in a statement. “This also means that while these Haitians were working and contributing to our community and economy yesterday, today it is now illegal to employ them.”

Haitians have become a target of particular vitriol for Trump stemming from his first administration. During the 2024 campaign, the Haitian community in Springfield was repeatedly denigrated by Trump and his then-running mate, JD Vance, both of whom falsely claimed immigrants in that city were eating pets.

A pastor in Springfield told reporters after Thursday’s decision that it could spell a “tragedy” for the city.

“We’re a city that had been in decline for 50 years,” Pastor Carl Ruby of Central Christian Church said. “When Haitians arrived, that was the first time we grew in half a century.”

Removing Haitian TPS holders from the workforce will have a major impact on many employers and industries, as well as the economy as a whole, business groups warned.

Nearly 190,000 Haitian TPS holders were employed in early 2025, according to an analysis by FWD.us, a policy and advocacy organization focused on immigration that supports TPS for Haitians. They contribute an estimated $5.9 billion to the US economy, as well as pay $1.6 billion in federal, payroll, state and local taxes.

“The decision is a devastating setback for the hundreds of thousands of TPS holders who have built their lives in communities across America and, importantly, for our economy as we stand to lose long term, vetted and skilled workers in critical sectors from healthcare to hospitality to construction and beyond,” Rebecca Shi, CEO of American Business Immigration Coalition Action, said in a statement.

Jan Gautam, CEO of IHRMC Hotels & Resorts, will likely have to lay off roughly 20% of his staff at dozens of hotels in Florida in the wake of the ruling.

Without the workers, he could have to keep some rooms closed at times because the hotels won’t be able to promptly prepare them for the next guests. Plus, he’ll have to spend time finding new employees – already a challenging task – and shell out thousands of dollars training each of them.

“Most of these Haitian TPS workers are willing to work in any situation, cleaning dirty toilets and dirty rooms, to take care of their own families,” said Gautam, who is a member of the American Business Immigration Coalition. “At the same time, they also pay taxes.”

The elder care industry, which is already facing a severe staffing shortage, is also bracing for what the decision will mean for nursing homes, assisted living facilities and home care since many of their employees are Haitian TPS holders. Some may have to limit admissions or requests for service until they can hire more workers.

Colin O’Leary, executive director at Laurel Ridge Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center, is concerned about how he’ll be able to replace the roughly 10 key staffers that he’ll likely have to let go. But even more than that, he’s worried about the impact on the 115 residents at the Boston facility.

“You lose very caring caregivers that have established relationships with our seniors,” he said.

(CBS News)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DRT2wy20X4

“It’s blood money”: Family of exonerated man in Texas yogurt shop murders speaks out after settlement

    June 26, 2026 / 7:00 AM EDT / CBS News

    By Megan Marcus

The widow and the daughter of Maurice Pierce, one of the four men wrongfully accused in the 1991 Texas yogurt shop murders, have confirmed they signed a multimillion-dollar settlement with the city of Austin.

Kimberli and Marisa Pierce spoke with correspondent Erin Moriarty in a new episode of the podcast “48 Hours: Case by Case.” Moriarty has reported on the yogurt shop murders for over 30 years.

Maurice Pierce’s widow Kimberli made clear that their priority has never been financial compensation.”It’s blood money for us. He died for this money,” Kimberli Pierce said. “It’s about the reform and the changes that need to happen, not only in Austin, but apparently across the country.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DRT2wy20X4

They also went into great detail about what they believe happened when Maurice Pierce was shot and killed by police in 2010.

Maurice Pierce was one of four men, along with Michael Scott, Robert Springsteen and Forrest Welborn, who were wrongfully accused in the murders of four teenage girls in Austin on Dec. 6, 1991. Eliza Thomas, Amy Ayers, and sisters Jennifer and Sarah Harbison were tied up, shot and left inside the yogurt shop as it was set ablaze.

The four men were exonerated in February after investigators linked another man, Robert Eugene Brashers, to the killings. The city of Austin subsequently offered a $35 million settlement. Because Maurice Pierce died in 2010, his share of $10 million will go to Kimberli and Marisa Pierce.

Eight days after the killings, 16-year-old Maurice Pierce was arrested at a mall, carrying a .22, the same caliber handgun connected to the crime. Kimberli Pierce said police told Maurice Pierce that his gun was the murder weapon. He responded by mentioning his friend Forrest Welborn. Maurice Pierce was then wired up and sent to speak with Welborn, but investigators ultimately determined that Welborn and the others knew nothing about the murders, and no charges were filed at that time.

Marisa Pierce has said there was no evidence when her father was questioned, “only a detective and a narrative, a narrative so completely false. It feels evil.”

From left, Maurice Pierce, Forrest Welborn, Michael Scott and Robert Springsteen were exonerated in February 2026 after investigators linked another man, Robert Eugene Brashers, to the December 1991 killings of four teenage girls in an Austin, Texas, yogurt shop. CBS News/AP

Nearly eight years later, in 1999, all four men were arrested after Scott and Springsteen confessed to the murders. They later recanted, saying they had been coerced. Springsteen and Scott were tried and convicted, but later those convictions were overturned on constitutional grounds. A subsequent DNA test excluded all four men. Maurice Pierce was never convicted but spent three years in jail before his release in 2003.

Kimberli Pierce said her husband came home a hardened man. She believes police continued to harass Maurice and their family after his release. In 2010, Maurice Pierce was stopped for a routine traffic stop, fled on foot, and was shot and killed by an Austin police officer who said Pierce had stabbed him with a knife.

Marisa and Kimberli Pierce told “48 Hours” that they intend to review the circumstances surrounding the night of Maurice Pierce’s death. Marisa Pierce revealed in new, emotional detail that she was on the phone with her father at the time. She believes he panicked and was only trying to get away, not to hurt anyone. She described her father’s last breaths: “And in those last moments, he had just said I’m sorry, I don’t think you’re gonna see me again, and I love you.”

“48 Hours” reached out to the Austin Police Department about the Pierces’ allegations of harassment and their questions about Maurice Pierce’s death in 2010. The police department said they had no additional comment.

For the Pierce family, the settlement is a starting point, not an end point. They have put forward seven proposed reforms they hope the city of Austin will approve, including appointing a child advocate whenever a minor is questioned, prohibiting deceptive interrogation tactics, educating juveniles about their rights and establishing accountability measures to address tunnel vision in police investigations.

In a statement shared with “48 Hours,” the Pierces wrote: “Real justice is not only about acknowledging harm after the fact but about creating safeguards that prevent future families from enduring the same pain.”

Trump clean energy tax credit cutoff drives project rush as prices set to soar

    2026-06-26T11:05:21.293Z / Reuters

    • Summary
    • Solar companies rushed to secure tax credits before deadline, creating a years-long project pipeline
    • Early data shows ending subsidies could raise renewable energy prices 40–120%
    • Project developers say solar will be competitive without tax credits as electricity demand and prices surge

June 26 (Reuters) – U.S. solar developers have secured federal subsidies for a wave of projects large enough to nearly double current capacity, rushing to beat a July 4 deadline that could send renewable power costs sharply higher.

The projections ‌reflect the loss of valuable renewable energy tax credits worth at least 30% of project costs, a change that threatens to raise U.S. energy prices amid surging demand driven by artificial intelligence.

The phaseout of the 20-year-old subsidies, accelerated under President Donald Trump’s 2025 tax law, could drive contract prices for wind and solar energy up by 40% to 50%, with early data from Texas showing prices for some deals up 120%, according to an analysis by LevelTen Energy.

The shift comes as Trump administration policies seek to slow renewable energy development, increasing reliance on fossil fuels despite natural gas turbine supply bottlenecks and mounting pressure for federal support for coal.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that renewable energy sources like solar and wind are too expensive, receive unfair subsidies, and are less reliable than fossil fuels because they depend on the wind blowing or the sun shining. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The looming tax credit loss has created a pipeline of more than 200 gigawatts of solar capacity with credits effectively secured, according to energy research firm Wood Mackenzie — nearly enough to double the current U.S. solar fleet. Solar is the fastest growing U.S. electricity source.

Buyers that fail to secure contracts with projects in that pipeline will face far higher costs.

“It should give caution to folks that are waiting on the sideline,” said Connor Valaik, a senior manager at LevelTen, which connects renewable electricity sellers and buyers. “The future is not the rosiest with this tax credit cliff.”

The data is preliminary because project developers have rushed to preserve tax credit eligibility by “safe harboring,” which can include starting site construction work, buying key equipment, logging worker hours or spending a portion of ‌project costs, before July 4. Under federal tax rules there is a four-year window to complete those facilities, many of which are still seeking buyers for their power.

Contract proposals are increasingly including subsidy-free cost estimates because projects in early stages of development may not be able to clinch tax credit eligibility, LevelTen said.

Even without subsidies, utility-scale solar and onshore wind are the cheapest forms of energy generation, according to a 2025 analysis by investment firm Lazard. Community and industrial solar installations are also competitive with natural gas and nuclear power plants.

    MORE EXPENSIVE BUT STILL COMPETITIVE

Solar project developers said their silver lining is that renewable energy, excluding the tax credits, will be less expensive than retail power in the coming years due to soaring electricity prices driven by data center demand.

“We can initiate projects… at the same level of profitability in three years that we can today, because the price of energy has already escalated so dramatically in the areas that we’re doing business in, with no sign of slowing down,” said John Witchel, CEO of Durango, Colorado-based commercial solar developer King Energy.

Developers are already planning for a new market.

Revel Energy, a commercial solar developer in Irvine, California, has secured tax credits for about 10 projects, but typically does 15 a year.

Tyler Crossno, the company’s digital marketing manager, said customers installing solar will likely break even on their investment in five to six years without the tax credit, versus around three years currently.

The backlog is expected to sustain U.S. installations through the end of the decade, according to energy policy research organization Energy Innovation, which forecasts new utility-scale capacity will contract in the early 2030s.

“That is inevitably going to drive prices up,” said Jake Schueller, a partner with Woven Energy, which helps tribes develop energy assets.
