New Mexico reopens investigation into allegations at Epstein’s former Zorro Ranch

    February 19, 2026 / 6:28 PM EST / CBS/AP

New Mexico’s attorney general has reopened an investigation into allegations of illegal activity at Jeffrey Epstein s former Zorro Ranch.

Attorney General Raúl Torrez’s office made the announcement Thursday, saying the decision was made after reviewing information in the so-called Epstein files recently released by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Although New Mexico’s initial case was closed in 2019 at the request of federal prosecutors in New York, state prosecutors say now that “revelations outlined in the previously sealed FBI files warrant further examination.”

The New Mexico Department of Justice said special agents and prosecutors at the agency will be seeking immediate access to the complete, unredacted federal case file and intend to work with other law enforcement partners as well as a new truth commission established by state lawmakers to look into activities at the ranch.

“As with any potential criminal matter, we will follow the facts wherever they lead, carefully evaluate jurisdictional considerations, and take appropriate investigative action, including the collection and preservation of any relevant evidence that remains available,” the New Mexico Department of Justice said in a statement.

While Epstein never faced charges in New Mexico, state prosecutors confirmed in 2019 that they had interviewed possible victims who visited the ranch south of Santa Fe. They never elaborated on how many accusers were interviewed or what they say took place at the ranch.

The New Mexico Department of Justice did not immediately respond to emailed questions about why state prosecutors were requested to close the investigation in 2019 or whether there were specific allegations detailed within the recent filings that were released that prompted reopening the investigation.

Reuters news agency reported that state’s Department of Justice is looking into an unverified allegation from a 2019 email in the Epstein files that claimed the bodies of two foreign girls were buried outside the property. A spokesperson told Reuters the department has requested an unredacted copy of the email from the U.S. Department of Justice.

“To know that somebody reported possible bodies being buried on this property is horrifying and must be brought to justice immediately,” New Mexico state representative Andrea Romero told CBS News.

On Tuesday, New Mexico’s truth commission had its first meeting. The bipartisan, four-member panel of state House representatives is charged with investigating allegations that the ranch may have facilitated sexual abuse and sex trafficking.

New Mexico lawmakers also said they want to know why Epstein was not registered as a sex offender there after pleading guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from an underage girl and whether there was corruption among public officials.

Epstein purchased the sprawling Zorro Ranch in New Mexico in 1993 from former Democratic Gov. Bruce King and built a hilltop mansion. Nearby was a private airstrip with a hangar and helipad. The property also included a ranch office, a firehouse and a seven-bay heated garage.

The property was sold by Epstein’s estate in 2023 — with proceeds going toward creditors — to the family of Don Huffines, a Republican running for state comptroller in Texas. In a social media post on X, Huffines said the property has been renamed San Rafael Ranch after a saint associated with healing and that his family plans to operate a Christian retreat there.

A spokesperson for Huffines has said that the owners have never been approached by local, state or federal law enforcement requesting access to the ranch and if they do, full cooperation will be granted.

There are thousands of references to the ranch in the documents released by federal authorities.

Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a Democrat, was among the guests to have visited the ranch when Epstein owned it. Following one of the early investigations into the disgraced financier, Richardson donated $50,000 in 2006 gubernatorial campaign contributions from Epstein to charity.

Richardson, who died at age 75 in 2023, also appeared in a flight log as having travelled in 2011 on Epstein’s helicopter from the British Virgin Islands to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Brian Condit, Richardson’s chief of staff, was also listed as a passenger and told CBS News last year that they did not visit the private property Epstein owned there.

New Mexico Land Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard in 2019 canceled grazing leases held by the ranch after her office was denied access to inspect the nearly 2 square miles of leased state land.

Garcia Richard in a letter sent last week called on federal authorities and state prosecutors to ensure a thorough criminal investigation into allegations related to the ranch. She called the allegations included in the latest documents “deeply disturbing.”

“People deserve to know the truth about what happened on Epstein’s ranch and are looking to leaders for answers,” she said in a statement.

News of the New Mexico investigation came the same day as another major development linked to the Epstein files: the arrest of the former Prince Andrew in the U.K.

That case relates to what police called “suspicion of misconduct in public office,” not accusations involving young women. Documents released by the Justice Department appear to show that when Andrew was working as a British trade envoy he may have shared confidential government information with Epstein.

    Saul Loeb/

Trump’s first Board of Peace meeting sees lofty pledges, but questions remain

It had the hallmarks of a Trump political rally – Laura Branigan’s “Gloria” blaring over speakers and red “USA” hats handed out to participants.

But the event in Washington, DC, Thursday was meant to mark a major moment in global governance. It was the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, the organization chaired by US President Donald Trump that aims reconstruct and reshape Gaza after years of war. And it carried with it potentially far-reaching implications for how the White House handles international conflicts and who gets to call the shots.

In lengthy remarks, the US president announced that nine nations had pledged more than $7 billion to Gaza relief. A handful of countries would commit troops to be sent there as part of a stabilization force, he said. Trump also said the United States would contribute $10 billion to the Board of Peace, which he will indefinitely chair. A billionaire member of the board’s executive committee outlined the development potential of the enclave, even as the vast majority of Gaza lies in ruins after nearly two years of Israeli bombardment. Even so, FIFA, complete with a flashy and seemingly AI-generated video, previewed “a complete football ecosystem.”

Now, there are major questions of how these lofty ambitions will comport with the realities on the ground in Gaza. There have been repeated violations of Trump’s ceasefire, and the humanitarian situation there remains precarious. Moreover, the key issue of the demilitarization of Hamas has not yet been solved, raising questions of when and how reconstruction and deployment can actually take place.

In his remarks, Trump, who has sought to lean into the role of peacemaker, did little to assuage concerns about the board’s efforts to supersede the United Nations.

“The Board of Peace is going to almost be looking over the United Nations and making sure it runs properly,” he said, adding that the UN has “tremendous potential.”

“We’re also going to maybe take it a step further, where we see hot spots around the world, we can probably do that very easily,” Trump said at the conclusion of the Board of Peace meeting, which comes as he considers military action against Iran. Though the UN Security Council resolution that empowered the Board of Peace dealt specifically with Gaza, the founding charter for the group claims its own authority to deal with any theoretical conflict.

Roughly four dozen countries had representatives at Thursday’s meeting, but only half of those are members of the board. The other half, including the majority of participants from Europe, were there as observers. A senior European Union diplomat told reporters in Brussels on Thursday, “It is clear there are issues with the Board of Peace.” But in the absence of another mechanism or international organization to shape the future of Gaza, there is no other choice.

Many of the US’ traditional allies have turned down membership on the board amid concerns about its broad mission. There are also concerns about some potential members. Trump added later on Thursday he would like to see Russia and China join the board.

Aaron David Miller, a former Middle East negotiator for the US, told CNN that the meeting seemed detached from reality, noting that the demilitarization plan is not ready for “prime time.”

There is an understanding among US officials and regional allies that demilitarization will be a long-term process, sources have told CNN. One US official said the expectation is that the technocratic Palestinian government will facilitate conversations with Hamas on the matter, and although there are efforts ongoing, there is no timeline for it actually taking place. In a statement on Thursday evening, Hamas made no mention at all of disarmament or the demilitarization of Gaza. Instead, it called on the international community to compel Israel fully open the crossings into Gaza and begin reconstruction.

It is unclear if the International Stabilization Force (ISF) will deploy before there is demilitarization. According to Trump, Morocco, Albania, Kosovo, and Kazakhstan “have all committed troops and police to stabilize Gaza.”

Egypt and Jordan, he added, “are likewise providing very, very substantial help, troops, training and support for a very trustworthy Palestinian police force.”

And the board-affiliated National Committee for the Administration of Gaza aims to “restore security via professional civilian police under one authority … including training and developing 5,000 Gazan police to be deployed in 60 days,” committee chair Ali Shaath said at the meeting Thursday. But the committee has been unable to enter Gaza, stuck in Cairo with little power to implement its decisions or govern the enclave in any meaningful way.

High Representative Nickolay Mladenov, who serves as the key link between the board and the Palestinian technocratic committee, noted on Thursday that in order to begin reconstruction, “there is no other option” than the full demilitarization of Gaza and the decommissioning of weaponry in the enclave.

Trump said Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Kuwait have given more than $7 billion towards Gaza relief but did not go into specifics of how or when the money would be invested. It is also unclear what the $10 billion US contribution to the board will be specifically used for, though a US official said it would be contributed over the coming years.

Miller noted “the money is no good if you can’t spend it.”

Part of the issue, he said, is that the Israeli government is unlikely to allow infrastructure into the parts of Gaza it does not control or they’re going to insist on inspecting “every item.” The other issue is ongoing military strikes, he noted.

“I think under the right circumstances, external actors could have significant impact. I just don’t see how you trim what I saw today into a reality that would make Gaza whole, secure and prosperous,” Miller said.

Feb 19 (Reuters) – New York Governor Kathy Hochul has withdrawn her proposal to allow commercial robotaxi services in smaller cities outside New York, a spokesperson for the governor said on Thursday.

“Based on conversations with stakeholders, including in the legislature, it was clear that the support was not there to advance this proposal,” the spokesperson said.

The move is a setback to Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O), opens new tab autonomous vehicle unit Waymo, which received its first permit to begin testing autonomous vehicles in New York City in August, albeit with a trained specialist behind the wheel.

The unit, which is providing about 400,000 driverless rides weekly to the public in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, Atlanta and other cities, was hoping to grow its already sizable foothold in the robotaxi market and tap into a large pool of new users.

“While we are disappointed by the Governor’s decision, we’re committed to bringing our service to New York and will work with the State Legislature to advance this issue,” a Waymo spokesperson said.

Waymo’s authority to test in New York City will expire on March 31 if not extended, the company said. The company is not permitted to offer paid driverless rides in New York.

“We hear from thousands of New Yorkers who have experienced Waymo in other cities and want access to it at home,” the spokesperson added.

Self-driving operations already face a difficult path to commercialization, as the technology has been under heavy scrutiny over safety concerns after accidents involving autonomous vehicles.

U.S. agencies opened an investigation after a Waymo self-driving vehicle struck a young girl near an elementary school in Santa Monica, California last month, causing minor injuries after she ran across the street from behind a double-parked SUV.

“Autonomous vehicles are already driving down accident rates and improving pedestrian safety in Arizona, California, and Texas. It’s disappointing that Governor Hochul is withdrawing her proposal, because New Yorkers deserve the same proven protections,” Chamber of Progress CEO Adam Kovacevich said.

Some lawmakers want Congress to pass legislation that would make it easier to deploy self-driving vehicles nationally.

Feb 19 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday said the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved his $400 million White House ballroom project, bringing the massive undertaking a step closer to full approval.

“The Commission of Fine Arts just approved, unanimously, 6 to 0, with one recusal because he had a conflict in that he worked professionally on the job, the White House Ballroom,” Trump announced Thursday on Truth Social. “Great accolades were paid to the building’s beauty and scale.”

The planning commission said it would consider the 90,000-sq-foot (8,000-sq-m) addition to the White House’s East Wing for “approval of preliminary and final site and building plans” on March 5.

However, federal courts are also scrutinizing the project. A judge last month expressed skepticism that the administration had the authority to move forward with construction after the previous building was demolished without approval by Congress.

Artemis II moon rocket refueled in practice countdown setting stage for historic flight

    February 19, 2026 / 11:17 AM EST / CBS News

NASA cleared engineers to load more than 750,000 gallons of supercold propellants into the agency’s huge Space Launch System rocket Thursday in a second “wet dress rehearsal” countdown to verify leak repairs and clear the way for a flight to the moon as early as March 6.

The practice countdown began Tuesday night, kicking off a carefully choreographed series of steps to ready the world’s most powerful operational rocket for a simulated launch Thursday at 8:30 p.m. EST. Controllers then planned to carry out additional tests to make sure the team can recycle, hold and restart an actual launch countdown as needed to handle unexpected problems.

The Artemis II Space Launch System rocket stands atop pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center during a second “wet dress rehearsal” fueling test. NASA

The initial stages of the rehearsal countdown went well and at 9:35 a.m., Launch Director Charlie-Blackwell Thompson gave her “go” to begin the multi-hour process of loading 196,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and 537,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen fuel into the SLS rocket’s first stage. The rocket’s second stage holds another 22,500 gallons of propellant.

If no out-of-limits leaks or other major problems are detected, Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen will go into pre-flight medical quarantine Friday, aiming for launch on a flight around the far side of the moon as early as March 6.

The grey structure at left is a tail service mast, one of two that feed propellant lines, nitrogen gas, electrical cables and data lines into the base of the Space Launch System rocket (seen here during preparations for the Artemis I launch in 2022). NASA

It will be the first piloted flight to the moon since the final Apollo landing in 1972, carrying the crew farther from Earth than any astronauts in space history. Wiseman and his crewmates will also be the first to ride into space atop the 322-foot-tall Space Launch System rocket, making only its second flight, and the first to fly aboard an Orion deep space crew capsule.

More important, the flight will serve as a major step toward the follow-on Artemis III mission to land astronauts near the moon’s south pole in 2028.

NASA originally planned to launch the Artemis II mission early this month. But hydrogen leaks were detected during an initial wet dress rehearsal countdown. The flight ultimately slipped to early March because of work to replace and test suspect seals in a quick-disconnect umbilical that attaches propellant lines to the base of the rocket.

The second rehearsal countdown and fueling test Thursday was intended to verify leak-free propellant loading and to give the launch team a chance to practice and verify steps needed to hold and restart a countdown to allow time for troubleshooting any problems that might crop up in a reach launch count.

President Donald Trump welcomed leaders from around the world on Thursday as he hosted the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington, D.C.

One country that would not be joining the board, but will be hosting a related event is Norway.

The U.S. president announced the plan for Norway to host a meeting on Palestinian aid during the inaugural meeting of the board on Thursday. However, as he announced Norway’s plans, he joked about getting the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I’m excited to announce that Norway has agreed to host an event bringing together the Board of Peace — Oh, I thought when I saw this note, ‘I’m excited to announce that Norway,’ I thought they were going to say that they’re giving me the Nobel Prize. Oh, this is less exciting,” Trump quipped. “Oh, it says, ‘I’m excited to announce that Norway,’ and I’m saying, ‘Oh, great, I’m getting the Nobel Prize. Finally, finally, they got it right.’ But I don’t care, I don’t care about the Nobel Prize. I care about saving lives.”

[TRUMP CONVENES FIRST ‘BOARD OF PEACE’ MEETING AS GAZA REBUILD HINGES ON HAMAS DISARMAMENT]

Trump received several nominations for the prize. However, they were declared past the Nobel Committee’s nomination deadline. In the end, the award was given to then-exiled Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Following the capture of Venezuela’s dictatorial leader Nicolás Maduro, Machado came to the U.S., where she met with Trump and presented him with her Nobel Peace Prize.

“I presented the President of the United States the medal… the Nobel Peace Prize, and I told him, ‘Listen to this, 200 years ago, General Lafayette gave Simón Bolívar a medal with George Washington’s face on it,’” Machado said while speaking at the U.S. Capitol in January. “He kept that medal for the rest of his life. Actually, when you see his portraits, you can see the medal.”

She said Lafayette gave the medal to Bolívar as a symbol of the partnership between the people of the U.S. and the people of Venezuela and their shared fight for freedom against tyranny.

[TRUMP ANNOUNCES $5 BILLION PLEDGE IN GAZA AID FROM BOARD OF PEACE MEMBERS]

Trump thanked Machado for the medal in a post on Truth Social on Thursday evening.

“It was my Great Honor to meet María Corina Machado, of Venezuela, today,” Trump wrote. “She is a wonderful woman who has been through so much. María presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you María!”

Norway has said that it would not join the Board of Peace. However, it is set to convene its Ad-Hoc Liaison Committee (AHCL) for Palestinian aid, according to The Times of Israel. The outlet noted that Norway has led the AHCL for decades, as it was established in the wake of the Oslo Accords, which were also aimed at ending the Israel-Hamas conflict.

A spokesperson for the Norwegian Foreign Ministry told The Times of Israel that Norway “remains firm” in its position against joining the Board of Peace.

Fed’s Kashkari: Hassett comments about Fed researchers represent another attack on independence

    February 19, 2026 4:09 PM UTC / Reuters

WASHINGTON, Feb 19 (Reuters) – The call by a top Trump administration official for New York Federal Reserve staff to “be disciplined” for recent research on tariffs was just the latest move by the administration to undermine the independence of the central bank, Minneapolis Fed president Neel Kashkari said on Thursday.

In a Wednesday CNBC interview, top administration economic adviser Kevin Hassett called recent New York Fed research “shoddy” in its conclusion that roughly 90% of the cost of the administration’s import tariffs were being paid by the U.S. The analysis, consistent with estimates by other economists and organizations, included among its authors a top economist in the New York Fed’s research division and a Columbia University professor who have collaborated together on several pieces of research on international prices and tariff impacts.

“This is just another step to try to compromise the Fed’s independence. Over the past year we’ve seen multiple attempts,” Kashkari said at an economic event in North Dakota, including the Department of Justice’s issuance of a grand jury subpoena of the Fed and the opening of a related criminal investigation of Fed chair Jerome Powell. President Donald Trump is also trying to fire Fed governor Lisa Cook, an issue pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The dispute “is really about monetary policy. We are doing our very best to make the best assessment of the economy based on data and analysis,” Kashkari said, at a moment when Trump has demanded that interest rates be slashed as low as 1%. The Fed’s current policy rate of interest is set in a range from 3.5% to 3.75%, and further cuts are unlikely for now given inflation is roughly a percentage point above the Fed’s 2% target.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

“Politicians, conservative and liberal, would rather have monetary policy that serves their political needs in the moment,” Kashkari said, with Trump having cited both a desire for the government to borrow money more cheaply and to lower home mortgage interest rates among his reasons for wanting the Fed to cut.

The administration’s moves against the Fed, however, have led to some political blowback and complicated the confirmation as Fed chair of Kevin Warsh, who Trump has nominated to replace current Chair Jerome Powell when his term leading the central bank ends in May. Some Republican senators have demanded the criminal probe of Powell be dropped before they will allow Warsh’s nomination to proceed.

Kashkari said the role of the research departments at the 12 regional Fed banks was central to how the institution operates.

    Ad Break Coming Up!

“All 12 reserve banks have independent research departments that are always studying the economy,” Kashkari said. “That is how we’re trying to get better and learn.”
