Democrats running to replace Platner in key Senate race call for ICE to be ‘abolished’

Maine Senate Democratic candidates double down on ‘Abolish ICE’ after fatal agent-involved shooting

    July 13, 2026 6:59pm EDT / Fox News

    By Paul Steinhauser

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Democratic Senate candidate Nirav Shah says ‘there are a lot of similarities between what Graham [Platner] did in his campaign and what our campaign is doing.’

PORTLAND, Maine – Some of the leading contenders in the race to replace ex-candidate Graham Platner as the Democratic Senate nominee in Maine are amplifying calls to abolish ICE after a fatal shooting by federal immigration officers in the northern New England state.

Hours after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Monday shot and killed a man in Biddeford, which is located about 15 miles southwest of Portland, four of the candidates joined hundreds of protesters who marched by the shooting site.

The shooting comes as the battle to replace Platner is heating up, and will likely boost immigration as an issue in a crucial Senate race that may determine the Senate majority.

“I think we are at the point where ICE needs to be abolished,” Nirav Shah, the former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told Fox News Digital. “ICE in its current form has shown itself incapable of doing its job.”

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, speaking with reporters, said, “This is not acceptable in America. A young man, a dad, has been killed by ICE…This must stop. We need to get ICE out of the streets.”

Troy Jackson, a former state Senate president, took to social media immediately after the shooting to write, “Abolish ICE.”

Jackson held a sign at the protest that called for abolishing ICE, and reiterated that he’s been calling for the dismantling of the agency for months.

Paige Loud, a social worker and former congressional candidate who has also launched a Senate bid, also attended the protest.

“We must abolish ICE and prosecute the leaders of these operations that are destroying communities,” she said in a social media post.

The incident in Maine is the second in a week where ICE agents have used deadly force, following the fatal shooting during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas.

The latest incidents are reigniting protests and scrutiny of federal agents months after the shooting deaths in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the beginning of the year of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Those shootings drew weeks of national coverage and sharp debate over President Donald Trump’s ramped-up deportation efforts amid his administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

The Maine attorney general’s office, which is investigating Monday’s shooting along with the FBI, said initial statements suggest the motorist who was the target of the enforcement operation was attempting to flee in the direction of an ICE agent.

Two immigration advocacy groups said the man who was killed was authorized to work in the U.S. and had a Social Security number.

The shooting in Maine came three days after Platner ended his campaign amid mounting controversies and allegations of sexual misconduct that he had repeatedly denied, and a chorus of calls from top Democrats in Maine, the nation’s capital, and across the country to drop out of the race immediately.

A populist Democrat who was backed last September by progressive champion Sen. Bernie Sanders, Platner was challenging longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a high-profile, combustible and expensive race in Maine, which is one of a handful that will determine if the GOP holds onto its slim Senate majority in November’s midterm elections.

Seven Democrats have filed to run for the nomination, which will be determined by roughly 600 voting delegates at a July 25 convention held by the Maine Democratic Party.

Collins said in a statement following the shooting that “a full and impartial investigation of what happened” was needed.

Hours later, Collins said in another statement that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin “informed me that the Boston office of the DHS Inspector General has taken over the investigation of the Biddeford shooting in cooperation with the FBI.”

One of Collins’ Senate offices is located in Biddeford, and protesters marched to the office to chant, “Vote her out.”

Bahamian music group “still shocked” after bandmates killed in small plane crash

    July 13, 2026 / 5:35 PM EDT / CBS News

Surviving members of the beloved Bahamian musical group Da Pond Band are speaking out about their friends and bandmates who were killed when a small plane operated by Flamingo Air crashed in the Bahamas on Friday, killing all 10 people on board.

Da Pond Band, known for their lively Caribbean music, and a popular DJ were all set to perform at an Independence Day celebration on Andros Island. A flight that typically takes under 20 minutes, the plane had left Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau and was en route to San Andros when it crashed in North Andros, the Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority said.

Earlier in the day, Shenia Roberts, a vocalist for Da Pond Band, had already arrived on Andros Island and was waiting for the rest of the band to arrive. Roberts said five members of their group were killed in the crash.

“They were the people that I talked to in the morning, in the night,” Roberts told CBS News. “They were my friends, my confidants. And I was waiting on them.”

She said she flew in from Nassau on the same plane, flown by the same pilot, at around 7 a.m.

“You could tell it was an old plane,” Roberts said. ” But we didn’t have any issues.”

Bahamian investigators are looking into what led to the crash. Flamingo Air suspended all flights after two emergency incidents happened on the same day. Earlier in the day, the airline had a separate plane catch fire after landing in Nassau, according to Bahamian officials. There were no casualties in that incident.

“I’m still shocked that they’re gone. I can’t believe it,” said Shaniese Miller, another surviving band member. “They’re my family and I never expected that to happen.”

Miller was last with the band members who died the previous Friday at a weekly performance they host in Nassau.

“It’s the hottest spot, every Bahamian is there. International people fly over just to come to see Da Pond,” Miller told CBS News. “We were having so much fun, and after the second set, we were, they were just saying how they were so excited to go to Andros.”

The band members who died were identified by Da Pond Band as Giovanni McKenzie, Mateo Winder, Rashad Storr, Tonique Gilot and Travis Johnson. Melvin Henfield, also known as DJ Fresh, was also on the flight, according to the band.

The loss of these popular music figures has hit the entertainment industry in the Bahamas hard.

“They meant so much to so many people, this country is wrecked,” said Anishka Lewis, a popular Bahamian singer who often performed with Da Pond Band. “The last thing I said to them because we were in rehearsals till about 1 a.m. I told them, I say, listen, I love and appreciate y’all, man. Thank y’all for putting in the time and effort and energy into it, and I can’t wait to see y’all on Saturday.”

Three other passengers who were not performers were on the flight. Officials have not yet released their names.

Anasthasia Rolle told CBS News she believes her 16-year-old son, Nicholas Oliver Jr., is among those who were killed Friday. She said she believes he was added to the flight at the last minute.

Rolle said her son was excited to visit family and attend the festival. He was set to take a ferry earlier in the day with his father but they got there too late, she said. The father then went to the airport to see if he could get him on a plane.

He was set to arrive around 12:30 p.m., but as planes kept arriving in San Andros, Rolle couldn’t find her son. Hours passed.

“The question was, where is Nicholas? Did he disappear?” Rolle said. “As the time passed, I had to come to realization that my son was definitely on that plane.”

The pilot on the Flamingo Air flight waited on the tarmac to fill more seats for two hours after the plane was set to initially depart, according to Roberts, the vocalist for Da Pond Band, who said she was texting with McKenzie, one of the leaders of the band who died in the crash.

“He told me that they were getting ready to leave, I reached out and I asked him, so why are you taking so long? What happened? He said the pilot … He’s trying to find other people to fill the plane up,” Roberts told CBS News.

McKenzie wrote at 12:01 p.m. on Friday that the pilot was “waiting round for more people to full up the plane,” according to a screenshot of the text exchange on WhatsApp that was obtained by CBS News.

A Bahamian aviation source familiar with the matter told CBS News it can be a common practice in the Bahamas to wait until the plane is full before departing if the client is paying per seat, rather than chartering the entire plane.

The flight was supposed to be a charter flight exclusive to the performers for the festival, according to Roberts.

“That should have not been the situation, because it was a chartered plane,” Roberts said.

CBS News has reached out to Flamingo Air for comment.

When reached by phone, the owner of the airline told CBS News he had “no comment.”

The flight departed around 12:30 p.m., according to flight records. It crashed in a wooded area near the airport 18 minutes later.

In the Senate, there’s a black veil covering a desk. On top there’s a bowl of striking white roses. That’s where Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., used to sit.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., pointed to that desk during an emotional tribute to the late Senator on Monday. Graham was a confidant, trusted advisor and friend to Thune. And through tears, he set about remembering the lawmaker who spent 30 years in Washington, D.C., making a mark on his state and country.

“It’s difficult to believe that Lindsey Graham is no longer here with us,” Thune said. “That we won’t run into him at a meeting today or share a joke with him at this afternoon’s vote. The halls of the Senate already feel empty without him. And I know I’m not alone in that feeling.”

As Thune spoke about Graham, the late lawmaker’s staff sat in the Senate chamber as tears filled the room. And since Thune became the leader of the Senate GOP, you would oftentime see Graham enter his office just off the Senate floor.

He was there to talk down Republican rebels who threatened to sink President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” and once earlier this year stormed into Thune’s office declaring his resistance to a deal struck by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and the president to avert a government shutdown.

But he was there, and Thune noted that “Lindsey was fearless in his commitment to the causes that he espoused.”

“It didn’t matter to him whether he would catch flak on an issue,” Thune said. “He was undaunted by the politics if he believed he was right on the principle.”

“Senator. Warrior. Patriot. Statesman,” Thune continued. “Words that will be written about Lindsey. But for me, most of all, Mr. President, he was my friend.”

Shortly after Thune’s tribute to Graham, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster officially tapped his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to fill his seat for the remainder of his term. It’s a move that Thune, Trump and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C. backed.

“I think this is what Lindsey would have wanted, and I plan to honor him in this way,” Nordone said at the ceremony. “Now to Lindsey, I miss you more than I can even put into words. But I’m going to do this, I got it.”

Back in the Senate, Thune remembers Graham as a “staunch conservative and a fierce advocate for South Carolina,” but as a lawmaker who was willing to cross the aisle to find a solution. Through it all, Thune said that he would miss Graham’s friendship and humor.

“I am comforted by the knowledge that in the end, he has just changed his address. And that one day, Mr. President,” Thune said through tears. “We will laugh together again.”

Senator Lindsey Graham just died of aorta disease. My husband did too.

    July 13, 2026 / 5:49 PM EDT / CBS News

Senator Lindsey Graham died on Saturday, July 11th, at 71. The medical examiner’s preliminary finding was an aortic dissection, a tear in the wall of the aorta, the large artery that carries blood out of the heart. The final death certificate is still pending. Most of the coverage called it “sudden.” Aortic disease is usually silent until it tears or bursts.

What can go wrong in the aorta

The aorta is the body’s largest artery, running from the heart down through the chest and abdomen. Three different things can go wrong with it. They’re related but not the same, and they get confused all the time.

An aneurysm is a bulge. A weak spot in the aortic wall stretches and balloons outward. It happens slowly, over years, and usually causes no symptoms, which is why most aneurysms are found by accident on a scan done for something else. An aneurysm is defined by size. The wider it grows, the thinner and more fragile the wall gets, and the higher the odds that it will eventually fail.

Illustration created with Gemini Nano Banana Pro / Dr. Céline Gounder

A dissection is a tear. Blood breaks through the inner lining and forces its way into the wall itself, splitting the layers apart and carving a false channel. This one is sudden and is a true emergency, usually announced by abrupt, tearing chest or back pain. It doesn’t require an aneurysm first. A dissection can strike an aorta that was never enlarged, which is part of why it gets missed.

A rupture is a burst. The wall gives way completely, and blood pulses out where it shouldn’t, into the chest or the sac around the heart. It’s the usually fatal ending that either an aneurysm or a dissection can lead to, and it can kill in minutes.

Table created with Gemini Nano Banana Pro / Dr. Céline Gounder

Bulge, tear, burst. One can set off another, but they aren’t the same. Dissection skews older, driven by high blood pressure and hardened arteries. An aneurysm in a younger person is more likely to be inherited, caused by a weakness in the connective tissue itself.

That difference is what separated Graham from my husband. Graham’s aorta, at 71, tore, a dissection along a wall stiffened by decades of what the medical examiner called arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. My husband Grant Wahl’s bulged and burst, at an age when this disease usually means something inherited.

Graham’s kind is the common one, driven by age, blood pressure, and hardened arteries. For most people, it isn’t a reason to go hunting for an aneurysm. It’s a reason to treat your blood pressure and for emergency rooms to keep a tear in the aorta on their radar, because it still gets mistaken for a heart attack. There is one proven screening test in this whole area: a one-time ultrasound for men 65 to 75 who have ever smoked, which looks for abdominal aneurysms. Beyond that group, almost no one reading this needs a scan tomorrow.

The version that killed my husband is the other one, and it doesn’t play by those rules. It runs in families, it strikes decades earlier, and it usually gives no warning until the artery fails. A routine checkup won’t find it, and no population screening program looks for it. Most families learn they carry it the way mine did, after someone dies. None of this is a reason for everyone to panic. But if aortic disease runs in your family, it can be caught early, with imaging and sometimes genetic testing, long before it turns dangerous.

    The aneurysm nobody saw

In December 2022, my husband, the soccer journalist Grant Wahl, collapsed in the press box while covering a World Cup quarterfinal in Qatar. He died that night. He was 49.

The aneurysm was in the first stretch of aorta just above his heart, 6.0 cm across, and when it ruptured it filled the sac around his heart with blood. The autopsy found the wall had been thinning from the inside for a long time, its elastic fibers fragmenting. There was almost no hardening of his arteries at all. His was a bulge that burst in a man under 50, without the decades of arterial wear that killed the senator.

Why I asked for an autopsy

I’m a physician, epidemiologist, and medical journalist. I investigate. I think in terms of mechanisms and evidence, and I don’t accept “he died suddenly” as a stopping point. So I asked the New York City medical examiner for a full autopsy. I wanted to know what had happened, and I wanted an explanation. Had I missed something? Could anything have been done to prevent it or treat it? Could whatever killed him be used to protect the rest of Grant’s family, or help other families? I needed to make sense of it. Grief leaves you turning every ordinary day over, looking for the sign you didn’t catch, and the autopsy gave me answers instead of that loop. It gave me closure. It was therapeutic.

It gave me facts I needed for an uglier reason, too. Within days of Grant’s death, people invested in vaccine disinformation claimed the COVID shot had killed him. The autopsy was unambiguous: he tested negative for the virus, and the report stated that his prior vaccination “neither caused nor contributed” to the rupture. I’ve written about that elsewhere, and I’ll leave it there.

What the autopsy found in his DNA

The New York City medical examiner’s office runs the only molecular genetics laboratory housed inside a medical examiner’s office in the country. It tests the DNA of people who die suddenly, reviewing about 500 cases a year and finding a genetic cause in roughly 100 of them. In Grant’s heart tissue, the lab found a variant in FBN1, the gene behind Marfan syndrome.

Grant did not have Marfan. He was tall, but he didn’t have the syndrome. What he had was a single change in a gene that helps build the connective tissue holding the aortic wall together, in a spot the labs classify as a “variant of uncertain significance.” We don’t know for certain that this variant caused his aneurysm. It’s the most likely explanation, and inherited connective tissue problems are well-established risk factors for ascending aortic aneurysms in people under 60.

Sorting out which of these variants actually cause disease is real, unfinished work. Dr. Dianna Milewicz’s group at UTHealth Houston has spent years mapping the genes behind thoracic aortic disease. Other teams are chasing the opposite question: why some people carry a Marfan mutation and never get sick, hunting “modifier” genes that seem to shield the aorta. Grant’s variant sits inside that uncertainty.

    Turning a death into prevention

None of that uncertainty changed what came next. Once the lab identified the variant, Grant’s blood relatives could be tested for that exact change. My brother-in-law Eric, Grant’s brother, carries it. His uncle, a niece and a nephew, and other family members have been tested, too. Eric had echocardiograms as well as MRI and CT scans. His aorta is structurally normal. He now gets regular imaging, and if his aorta ever starts to enlarge, his doctors will see it coming, with years to act.

That’s what the autopsy did. It gave the people who share Grant’s DNA something they could act on.

The same disease killed the actor John Ritter. In 2003, at 54, he died of an aortic dissection that was mistaken for a heart attack. His widow, Amy Yasbeck, started the John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health, which funds Milewicz’s research program and has enrolled more than 1,500 families. Eric now advocates with them. Twenty-three years after Ritter’s death, aortic dissection is still routinely missed in emergency rooms because it mimics a heart attack and most clinicians aren’t thinking about it.

But it’s not just for patients to advocate for themselves. Clinicians should consider a tear in the aorta before sending someone home, and geneticists can test families after a sudden death. The New York City medical examiner recently launched a program called GIFTS that offers free genetic testing to the living relatives of people who died of inherited conditions, the first time a medical examiner’s office has tested living patients. The lab’s director, Dr. Yingying Tang, told me the program was shaped by families like mine.

    Should you get checked?

Two questions I get asked a lot:

What should prompt you to get screened?A first-degree relative, a parent, sibling, or child, with a thoracic aortic aneurysm or dissection, or a sudden unexplained death in the family, especially before 60. Physical features of a connective tissue disorder: being very tall with long limbs, a chest that caves in or juts out, severe nearsightedness, or a dislocated lens. The current cardiology guidelines recommend imaging the aorta in the first-degree relatives of anyone with thoracic aortic disease.

One more, and it has nothing to do with family history: men 65 to 75 who have ever smoked should get a one-time abdominal ultrasound to check for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. If that’s you, ask your doctor for it.

Who should get genetic testing?People with a thoracic aortic aneurysm or dissection who also have features of a connective tissue disease, a family history of aortic disease, or disease before 60. When a disease-causing variant turns up, the rest of the family can be tested for that exact variant. That’s how you find the Eric’s, the ones carrying the risk whose aortas are still normal.

And if an aneurysm is found? A known aneurysm is a manageable condition: blood pressure control, regular imaging, and surgery once it reaches a size threshold, around 5.5 cm for the ascending aorta and lower for people with genetic forms. Grant’s was 6.0 cm, well into repair territory. Nobody knew it was there.

I couldn’t have known. He had no symptoms, and nothing in his life would have pointed a doctor to his aorta. But a lot of families can know. If aortic disease has touched your blood relatives, ask your doctor about imaging and ask whether genetic testing makes sense for you.

Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., was appointed to fill her brother’s Senate seat after a push from President Donald Trump.

“It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darlene Graham, to finish his work for him now,” South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said at a ceremony on Monday afternoon.

McMaster, a close Trump ally, appointed Nordone nearly 48 hours after her brother and longtime lawmaker suddenly died from an aortic dissection.

McMaster’s pick comes after Trump pushed for Graham’s “wonderful sister” Nordone to get the job.

“This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly,” Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social on Monday morning.

HEART CONDITION TIED TO LINDSEY GRAHAM’S DEATH CAN STRIKE WITHOUT WARNING — WHAT TO KNOW

Others were also initially considered, including Lt. Gov. Pam Evette, who Trump endorsed in her failed bid to clinch the GOP nomination for governor, former Rep. Trey Gowdy and former Sen. Jim DeMint, sources told Fox News Digital.

Her appointment fills the seat through Jan. 3, while voters decide in November who will hold the seat for the next six-year term.

At this point, it’s unclear if Nordone, 62, would consider running for a full six-year term, and there’s already private jockeying to run in the special election, set for Aug. 11, to secure the GOP nomination in the Palmetto State, with Reps. Nancy Mace, R.S.C., and Ralph Norman, R-S.C., both eyeing a bid.

Graham’s death narrowed Republicans’ Senate majority and added pressure to keep every GOP vote available, especially with Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., still being treated after a fall and pneumonia.

Nordone, who has largely kept out of the public eye, is married to Larry Nordone and has two daughters. She has worked with the South Carolina Commission for the Blind (SCCB) as commissioner, according to the organization’s 2026-27 budget. The SCCB provides services aimed at helping blind and low-vision South Carolina residents gain employment, independence and self-sufficiency.

In the past, she has described a personal closeness with Lindsey Graham, having been raised by him after the death of their mother when she was just 11.

“I have always looked up to Lindsey. He’s just always been there for me as long as I can remember. If I fell down and scraped my knee, Lindsey was the one I ran to,” she recounted in a 2014 campaign ad.

Nordone has not previously held elected office. She will become South Carolina’s first female senator.

Following Trump’s endorsement, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), also put his support behind Nordone on Monday morning ahead of the announcement.

“Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, would be a fantastic pick to serve out the remainder of the Senate term,” Scott wrote in a post to X.

“After speaking with Darline, there is no one better who understands Lindsey’s love for family, our state and our country.”

McMaster also described speaking with Darline ahead of her appointment as well as with Trump.

“After we spoke on the phone in the wee hours of Sunday morning and you agreed to serve through tears, I had wondered what you would say and I was humbled by your quickness to see the duty that you had to serve. And I called the president afterwards, and he thought it was a great idea,” McMaster said.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., also voiced his support for Nordone.

He told CNN Monday afternoon that he had already spoken with both Nordone and McMaster the day before, and believed that tapping the longtime lawmaker’s sister to fill his spot, “in my view, makes a lot of sense.”

“I think, in many respects, it would be a way of extending Lindsey’s legacy here, and certainly something that, if that’s what they decide to end up doing, I think there’d be a lot of support for,” Thune said.

The filing period for a special primary election begins on July 21, with the special election to follow on Aug. 11. A runoff, if needed, would be held Aug. 25, leaving the candidate just two months to campaign before the Nov. 3 general election.

What to know about Lindsey Graham’s passing

    Analysis by Amber Phillips

It is rare that a sitting senator suddenly dies in office. And rarer still for it to be such a powerful senator. Lindsey Graham chaired or served on committees overseeing the budget and Justice Department. And he had President Donald Trump’s ear after turning from a fierce critic to all-around supporter.
