Subaru of America is recalling more than 541,000 vehicles because they were manufactured with an error on their certification labels, according to federal regulators.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a recall notice that the vehicles’ labels have an incorrect gross axle weight rating, or GAWR, which could lead to an overweighted vehicle and increase the risk of a crash. GAWR is the load-carrying capacity of an axle system, according to NHTSA.

The recall affects certain 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid vehicles, 2025 to 2026 Forester Hybrid and Forester vehicles and 2019 to 2026 Ascent vehicles. All 541,237 vehicles included in the recall contain the defect.

Subaru, which was notified of the issue by NHTSA in May, is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the labeling error.

Subaru plans to mail a new certification label to owners with instructions on how to place it over the existing one. Owners can also opt to have a dealer replace the label for free.

Letters informing owners of the issue are set to go out on August 25, 2026, according to the recall documents. Subaru’s recall number is WRH-26.

Harbor seal pup shot in head, third incident in less than a year, Washington state wildlife hospital says

    July 15, 2026 / 11:47 AM EDT / CBS News

A three-week-old male harbor seal is in critical but stable condition and undergoing treatment at a Washington state wildlife rehabilitation center after being shot in the head, according to a wildlife hospital.

This is the third marine mammal the Sea Life Response, Rehab and Research team in Des Moines, Washington has treated in less than a year, according to a post from the organization on social media. The message was posted alongside a video of a harbor seal pup in a padded container.

The harbor seal pup was admitted over the Fourth of July weekend, the facility said. During an initial exam, an X-ray of the animal’s skull showed he had been shot. The seal received “specialized care in our surgery suite,” the facility said, and is now recovering “outside with the rest of the pups.”

“If he continues to improve, he’ll receive a CT scan which will give us a clearer picture of his chance of survival and inform how to treat him from here,” the organization said.

Casey McLean, the executive director and a veterinary nurse at the rescue, told CBS affiliate KIRO that the group will do “everything to return” the pup “to the wild.” That may involve an attempt to remove the bullet, the station reported.

KIRO reported that this is the youngest marine mammal the group has treated. McLean said she believes the pup was on the water when it was shot, and that the shooter may have been aiming for an adult animal.

Sea Life Response, Rehab and Research told KIRO that anyone who observes suspicious activity on the water should contact authorities, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, or a local marine mammal stranding network.

Shooting a seal or a sea lion is considered a federal crime under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

In May, a tourist who threw a coconut-sized rock at an endangered Hawaiian monk seal was arrested by federal agents and charged with harassing and attempting to harass a protected animal. A defense attorney for the man, identified as Washington resident Igor Lytvynchuk, said he was trying to protect sea turtles.

If convicted, Lytvynchuk faces up to one year in prison for each charge, as well as a fine of up to $20,000 under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and a fine of up to $50,000 under the Endangered Species Act.

WASHINGTON, July 15 (Reuters) – Brett Matsumoto, President Donald Trump’s pick to head the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, moved a step closer on Wednesday to running the agency charged with producing key economic data, including on the labor market and inflation.

The ‌U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 12-11 along party lines to advance Matsumoto’s nomination to the full Republican-controlled Senate. The committee also approved the nomination of James Macy to be a member of the National Labor Relations Board, also on a party-line 12-11 vote, and the nomination of David Prouty for a second term as a member of the NLRB by a vote of 17-6. No date has been set for the final votes on the Senate floor.

The Federal Reserve, economists, investors, and the public rely on BLS data to gauge the health of the labor market, the extent of price pressures, and other critical aspects of the $32 trillion U.S. economy.

During a confirmation hearing in June, Matsumoto told the panel that he did not believe BLS data had been fabricated or rigged. Trump had removed the previous BLS commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, for issuing what he called “fake” ‌job numbers.

Matsumoto, an economist who has worked at the BLS since 2015 but is on leave from the economic data agency to work at the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers, also said he has faith in the work performed by the career staff who collect and process the data and would ensure that their output is what is published by the agency.

He said he would work to address technical issues that have undercut the quality of BLS data in recent years but did not echo Trump’s unfounded assertions that agency output was being manipulated for political purposes.

Trump fired McEntarfer, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, last August following the release of a monthly employment report that included historically large revisions to previously reported figures on job creation.

The president initially picked conservative economist E.J. Antoni to head the agency but later withdrew the nomination.

Attorney reveals why Trump’s new travel ban will likely face less legal pushback

Former federal prosecutor Andrew Cherkasky joins ‘Fox & Friends First’ to discuss why President Donald Trump’s new travel ban could face less legal hurdles than during his first term and the latest on the Trump-Harvard legal battle.

FIRST ON FOX: One House Republican is moving forward with efforts to codify President Donald Trump’s sweeping travel ban on “third-world” countries.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R.S.C., will introduce legislation Wednesday that would bar people from 39 countries across the Caribbean, Middle East and Africa from entering the United States, Fox News Digital has learned.

Mace’s bill, titled the Third World Immigration Moratorium Act, would also block entry for individuals traveling on Palestinian Authority-issued documents.

The South Carolina lawmaker argued her legislation, which mirrors the list of countries facing full or partial bans under the Trump administration, is necessary because many immigrants from the affected countries have failed to assimilate into American life.

TRUMP ADMIN ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF VISA RESTRICTION POLICY IN WESTERN HEMISPHERE

“For too long, Washington has looked the other way while bad actors exploited every gap in our system and American families paid the price. Those days are over,” Mace said in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital on her upcoming legislation. “If you import the third world, you will become the third world.”

“This bill makes crystal clear: entry into the United States is a privilege, not a right,” she continued. “We make absolutely no apologies for defending it.”

Countries that would face travel restrictions include Afghanistan, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burma, Burundi, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Gambia, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The proposal comes after the Trump administration resurrected a travel ban on 12 countries in June 2025 after an Egyptian national was charged with carrying out a deadly firebombing attack in Boulder, Colo., on demonstrators calling for the release of hostages in Gaza.

Trump later moved to expand the list by more than double after an Afghan national fatally shot 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard, and severely injured U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe in Washington, D.C., 25, in November.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/clear.gif

The president argued the move was necessary to protect national security and guard against visa overstays after both perpetrators were in the country illegally after overstaying their visas.

Many of the countries on the travel ban list are among the poorest in the world and have struggled with instability and terrorism.

Iran and Cuba — both longtime U.S. adversaries — are also among the countries targeted by the proposal.

Mace’s legislation would exempt several categories of travelers, including lawful permanent residents, dual nationals using passports from countries not subject to the restrictions, diplomats, NATO personnel, athletes participating in major international competitions, special immigrant visa recipients who assisted U.S. forces and some people fleeing ethnic or religious persecution in Iran.

Under Mace’s bill, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary would possess the authority to grant case-by-case waivers if admitting an individual is determined to be in the nation’s “critical interest.”

But the legislation is likely to face an uphill battle in the House amid expected opposition from Democrats and some Republicans who support legal immigration from several of the countries on her list.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/clear.gif

Earlier this year, a handful of Republicans joined Democrats in voting to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitians despite the Trump administration’s opposition. Some Republicans have also defended legal immigration for people from Cuba, Venezuela and other countries subject to the travel ban and often used as proxies of other foreign powers.

Mace previously introduced legislation that would bar naturalized citizens from serving in most of the federal government, including in Congress and as federal judges.

Why is Zelenskyy overhauling Ukraine’s government amid battlefield successes against Russia?

    2026-07-15 10:37:00-0400 / CBS News

    Updated on: July 15, 2026 / 10:39 AM EDT / CBS News

Kyiv — Ukraine’s Parliament accepted Yulia Svyrydenko’s resignation as prime minister on Tuesday following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to overhaul the country’s top leadership. The move has surprised many observers who credit the outgoing cabinet with Ukraine’s recent successes in countering Russia’s ongoing full-scale invasion.

Zelenskyy says the changes are aimed at preparing Ukraine for another difficult winter and strengthening relations with key foreign partners. But officials and lawmakers say the reshuffle also reflects broader political calculations inside Kyiv.

“Ukraine is changing its political strategy. Each priority area of foreign policy will be assigned to a specific person with substantial experience who is capable of implementing what we agree on at the leaders’ level and what the Ukrainian people expect,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. “The same applies to our domestic work … Preparing for winter is an extremely important priority, and Ukraine must be ready for every threat that may arise.”

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/ukraine-zelenskyy-svyrydenko-2265057994.jpg

The initial changes have indicated he’s serious about both priorities. Last winter was Ukraine’s harshest since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. As Russia hammered the country’s energy grid, cities endured weeks-long power and heating outages. Officials have warned that the government has not taken the steps necessary to prevent the same thing from happening this winter.

“The reason was the Svyrydenko cabinet’s failure to prepare adequately for the winter,” Oleg Dunda, a member of Ukraine’s parliament, told CBS News. “As far as I know, the implementation of the resilience plans was unsatisfactory. And so the question arose: Either try to strengthen this area in time, or let this cabinet take full responsibility.”

Svyrydenko’s likely replacement as prime minister, Serhiy Koretskyi, the CEO of Ukraine’s state energy giant Navtozgaz, may be well-positioned to address the shortcomings.

“He is a real technocrat,” Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine’s Ministry of Strategic Industries, told CBS News. “The winter is coming, and there is a need to strengthen the energy sector and efficiency.”

Zelenskyy is expected to make Svyrydenko Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States. Officials say she has close relationships with members of the Trump administration, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, dating back to their work on the critical minerals deal last year.

Ukraine’s current ambassador in Washington, Olha Stefanishyna, submitted her resignation this week.

But while some personnel shifts do track clearly with stated Ukrainian government priorities, others have confounded lawmakers and officials. Rumors that Zelenskyy could replace popular Minister of Defense Mikhailo Fedorov with current Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko have drawn considerable pushback.

Fedorov, a 35-year-old tech entrepreneur with close ties to Silicon Valley, became the defense chief in January after spearheading technological reforms at Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation. He is widely credited with Ukraine’s recent battlefield successes, including a campaign to cut off fuel and logistics flows to Crimea, the southern Ukrainian peninsula occupied by Russia since 2014.

Several officials told CBS News that Fedorov’s growing popularity has led some in Kyiv to view him as a potential political rival to Zelenskyy, and the Economist reported this week that there had been friction between Fedorov and some of Ukraine’s top generals, including the commander of the armed forces Oleksandr Syrskyi.

A spokesman for Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense said the observations in the Economist article were gathered before Zelenskyy announced the reshuffle of his government, and they would not offer any further comment.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Zelenskyy had announced no decision on any further moves in his shake-up, but he held meetings with Koretskiy, the likely new prime minister, as well as acting Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Minister of Internal Affairs Klymenko, and Fedorov.

“The transformation of all processes within Ukraine’s Defense Forces that can sustain the motivation of our warriors must also continue, along with efforts to ensure that combat brigades are properly staffed. We all understand the challenges,” Zelenskyy wrote on X following his meeting with Fedorov. “It is important that the necessary leadership in the defense sector delivers results.”

World Cup England vs. Argentina semifinal reignites painful historic rivalry tinged by war and cheating

    July 15, 2026 / 8:23 AM EDT / CBS News

London — The semifinal clash between England and Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup will see two bitter rivals face off in what is widely expected to be one of the most emotionally charged matches of the tournament.

The contest will see Lionel Messi, considered by many to be one of the best soccer players in the world, play against England for the first time in his long and storied career. He will face England’s all-time top goal scorer Harry Kane, and one of the stars of the tournament, Jude Bellingham.

Previous matches between the two countries have produced some of the sport’s most iconic moments. But this rivalry goes well beyond the soccer field.

    The Falklands War

Diplomatic relations between England and Argentina remain strained to this day over two small islands off Argentina’s Atlantic coast. To the U.K., they are the Falklands, but Argentina calls them the Malvinas.

In the 18th century, France, Spain and Britain all tried to lay claim to the islands, establishing early colonial settlements. France agreed to leave the islands in 1766, leaving Spanish settlers to force out the British, who withdrew in 1774.

The Spanish then left in the early 19th century, leaving a newly independent government in Buenos Aires to claim the islands 300 miles off the country’s coast as Argentina’s own.

The sovereignty dispute reignited in 1833, however, when British forces arrived to reclaim the islands, expelling the Argentinian population and replacing it with Britons.

In 1982, an Argentinian military junta launched an attack on the islands and quickly captured the territory, sparking a 10-week war that killed 907 people, more than a third of whom were Argentinian sailors on the ARA General Belgrano cruiser that was sunk by a British submarine in a highly controversial attack.

Facing superior military force, Argentina surrendered the islands, which remain dominated more than three decades later by a British population.

Las Malvinas remain a bitter point of contention for the South American nation.

    “The Hand of God”

Only four years after the conflict, Argentina and England faced off in a World Cup quarter final in Mexico City’s gargantuan Azteca Stadium, which was packed with 114,000 people.

Early in the second half, the ball looped fortuitously to Diego Maradona, one of the sport’s greatest players of all time, who leapt into the air and hit the ball with his fist into the back of the net.

The referee didn’t register the hand contact, and the goal stood.

“A few minutes later, Maradona then scored possibly the greatest goal in the history of the World Cup,” soccer journalist Joey D’urso told CBS News. It sealed Argentina’s fate — the match finished 2-1.

Asked afterward if he had scored his first goal legally, Maradona replied that it was, “a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God.”

In a 2019 documentary, he described it as “like some sort of symbolic revenge against the English” for their invasion of the Malvinas.

A year later, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, he told France Football magazine: “I dream to score another goal against the English, this time with the right hand.”

In 1998, Argentina beat England on penalty shots in a game that saw David Beckham red carded and which then-England captain Alan Shearer said on Wednesday “still hurts now.”

In 2002, Beckham scored a penalty to help England beat Argentina 1-0 in a World Cup group match — the two teams’ last competitive fixture.

    “For Malvinas, for Diego”

The Wednesday night rematch in Atlanta will determine who plays Spain on Sunday for World Cup glory. But the historical significance of the game is inescapable.

After beating Switzerland 3-1 on Saturday, Messi — who is often compared to Maradona — and his teammates sang The Fourth Star, the country’s alternative World Cup anthem.

“For Malvinas, for Diego,” they chanted.

Gary Linekar, who scored England’s consolation goal in the 1986 game and is now a well-known soccer commentator in the U.K., said Tuesday that he wants “revenge this time round” for the loss.

Ahead of Wednesday’s clash, Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni has tried to play down the historical significance.

“It is a football game and that is all,” he said.

But Argentina forward Jose Lopez has promised that he and his teammates will “leave our lives on the field.”

“Obviously, inside and outside the four lines of the pitch it’s a match that has a lot of history there, a lot of pain and a lot of things behind it,” he said.

England coach Thomas Tuchel said in the run-up to the game that Argentina’s players, “are fueled by history, it means a lot to them … But we are also emotional. We have the grit. We have the mentality that it takes to go up against it, and we are ready for it.”

“Argentina versus England has become a classic,” Víctor Hugo Morales, a Uruguayan journalist whose commentary on the 1986 match has been immortalized in Argentina, told The Guardian recently. “Before 1986, it was just another match. Since then, it has carried a political and emotional weight that goes far beyond football.”
