    Summary

    • GOP Rep. Tom Kean hasn’t been seen in Washington since early March due to an unspecified medical issue.
    • House Republicans are concerned about his health and whether the unexplained absence will complicate their ability to hold a key seat.
    • Kean is running unopposed in his primary Tuesday. He hasn’t offered a date for his return to Capitol Hill.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

GOP Rep. Tom Kean is running unopposed in his primary on Tuesday, seeking a third term in one of the nation’s most competitive seats.

But voters haven’t seen or heard directly from Kean in months — and it’s still unclear when he might return to work on Capitol Hill. Kean has yet to offer a date for his return to House Speaker Mike Johnson and his team, who have been navigating their reed-thin margins without him since early March, according to three GOP leadership sources.

The New Jersey congressman said in late April on social media that he’s dealing with a “personal medical issue,” without specifying what it is, and said he would be back “very soon.” Late last month, he told The New Jersey Globe that he’d be back in the “next couple of weeks.”

His absence, though, is now increasingly rattling House Republicans. Kean’s colleagues say they are worried about his health — and how the unexplained absence could complicate the GOP’s ability to hold onto a critical swing seat in an already difficult midterm cycle, according to multiple sources.

Some Republicans, too, are frustrated by what they see as a massive public relations failure, sources say, with the congressman’s team unable to answer specific questions about his return — and then drawing national scrutiny for the lack of responses.

Multiple aides in Kean’s office did not respond to requests for comment from CNN.

Kean has spoken privately to Johnson since his last vote on March 5. But if the speaker or others in leadership are aware of Kean’s medical condition, they have not disclosed it to their colleagues or their own staff, sources said.

Kean’s absence has mystified many of his House Republican colleagues. Some have been privately raising questions about what happens if Kean is forced to drop out of the race after the primary. Under New Jersey law, a post-primary vacancy would be filled by the state’s GOP county committee leaders. (Kean told the Globe last month that he is planning to run for reelection.)

He has maintained leadership support, however, with Johnson publicly backing him to reporters on Capitol Hill. And he earned a formal Trump endorsement ahead of his primary.

So far, his Democratic opponents in the primary have mostly refrained from using Kean’s absence as a political cudgel on the trail. But Republicans believe it will become a more salient attack line after voters choose their Democratic nominee on Tuesday, choosing between four candidates who’ve each raised more than $1 million. (Former Navy helicopter pilot Rebecca Bennett is considered the frontrunner, raising nearly $3 million.)

Since early March, Kean has continued to post regularly on his social media accounts. But it’s his staff who are attending high school graduations and ribbon cutting ceremonies for new businesses. His last public events appear to have been in early March, when he spent the weekend attending events such as a documentary screening at the Ukrainian American Cultural Center of New Jersey.

Bus driver in Virginia crash that killed 5 faces additional involuntary manslaughter charges

    June 1, 2026 6:09 PM EDT / CBS News

The bus driver involved in a Virginia highway crash that killed five people last week has been indicted on additional involuntary manslaughter charges, prosecutors announced Monday.

Jing Sheng Dong, a 48-year-old tour bus driver from Staten Island, New York, now faces three more felony counts in connection with the deaths, as well as a misdemeanor charge for reckless driving, Stafford Commonwealth District Attorney Eric Olsen said. Dong was previously charged Saturday with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Each count of involuntary manslaughter carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison if there’s a conviction, according to the prosecutor.

Nearly four dozen others were injured in the early morning crash on Friday, May 30, including Dong. He remained hospitalized on Monday and will be transported to the Rappahannock Regional Jail once he’s released, according to Olsen.

Virginia State Police said an initial investigation showed traffic was slowing in the southbound lane on Interstate 95 in Stafford County as cars approached a work zone. The bus driver allegedly “failed to slow for traffic” and crashed into six vehicles at about 2:35 a.m., police said.

The National Transportation Safety Board, which is also investigating along with state police, said the bus was operated by E&P Travel of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and was transporting passengers from New York to North Carolina.

The bus first struck a Chevrolet Suburban, which then hit an Acura SUV and additional vehicles, police said. Four people in the Acura were killed, along with one person in the Suburban.

The four victims in the Acura were a family from Greenfield, Massachusetts. CBS Boston reported that 45-year-old Dmitri Doncev, his wife, Ecterina, 44, their 13-year-old daughter, Emily, and their 7-year-old son, Mark, were on their way to a wedding in South Carolina.

The victim from the Suburban was identified as 25-year-old Priscilla Mafalda from Worcester, Massachusetts, state police said.

    2026-06-01T20:19:36.965Z / reuters.com

Los Angeles sheriff says ICE enforcement not expected at World Cup matches

    2026-06-01T20:19:36.965Z / reuters.com

LOS ANGELES, June 1 (Reuters) – Federal officials have told Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna that civil immigration enforcement will not take place at FIFA World Cup ‌games or events in Los Angeles, Luna said on Monday, as authorities outlined security plans for eight matches beginning on June 12.

“A couple of weeks ago there was some reporting, or rumors, about ICE potentially being at the FIFA games or events,” Luna told a press conference of local, state and federal law enforcement officials.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

“I personally called the head of Homeland Security here for the L.A. region and what he stated is that there will be federal agents … because it’s going to take all of us to make sure that all the venues, the scoped and unscoped events, are secure.

“But in regard to civil immigration enforcement, they told us that specifically would not be occurring at any of the games.

“Any of that is subject to change, but I have trust that they’re giving me the appropriate information because if that starts occurring, we’re going to have a whole new host of problems,” he added.

Immigration raids by masked ICE agents in Los Angeles last year sparked a wave of demonstrations in the region.

    HEIGHTENED SECURITY FOR IRAN’S MATCHES

Luna said law enforcement would increase staffing around Iran’s two matches in Los Angeles, with authorities monitoring possible protests or other activity near the stadium and fan zones.

Iran and the United ‌States are in negotiations to end their three-month-old war.

Iran is scheduled to play its first match of the tournament on June 15 at SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles, a region home to the largest concentration of Iranians outside Iran.

“Iran does bring a different dynamic because of the current world events,” Luna said.

“So there will be additional staffing for some of those games.”

ZERO TOLERANCE FOR UNAUTHORIZED DRONE USAGE

Officials also warned that drones would be subject to strict enforcement around World Cup venues, with temporary flight restrictions expected around facilities.

“If a drone’s violating a temporary flight restriction, the capability exists to bring that drone down into a safe location away from the crowds,” said Patrick Grandy, FBI assistant director in charge.

“We are going to be constantly monitoring the areas around the facilities, looking for violators of those temporary flight restrictions,” Grandy said, warning of “a zero tolerance policy” for those who willingly violate the restrictions.

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the security effort would bring an unusually large law enforcement presence to the region.

“Between the dates of June 11th, all the way through July 19th, if you are a criminal, this is a terrible time to commit a crime,” Hochman said.

“The district attorney’s office will prosecute you, and you will be punished.”

US court blocks Pentagon from removing transgender troops, for now

    • Summary
    • Transgender military ban is discriminatory, appeals court says
    • But block on enlisting can remain pending outcome of lawsuit
    • Part of broader Trump effort to eradicate transgender rights

June 1 (Reuters) – A U.S. appeals court on Monday said President Donald Trump’s administration could for now bar transgender people from enlisting in the military, but blocked the expulsion of current service members while ‌a lawsuit plays out.

A panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in

    a 2-1 ruling

said the 2025 policy was unlawfully motivated “by the bare desire to harm a politically unpopular group.”

But the Pentagon has broad powers to set enlistment standards, the court said, and can continue to ban transgender people from newly entering the military pending the outcome of a lawsuit by transgender current and would-be service members.

“It appears to us to be a much greater hardship to end a military career than to delay the start of one,” wrote Circuit Judge Robert Wilkins, an appointee of Democratic President Barack Obama.

Circuit Judge Justin Walker, a Trump appointee, in a dissenting opinion said courts “have neither the expertise nor the authority to decide whether the military can exclude the plaintiffs from its ranks.”

Jennifer Levi of LGBTQ rights group GLAD Law, who represents the plaintiffs, applauded the decision.

“This decisive ruling confirms that the Trump Administration has no legitimate basis to discharge transgender service members who have met every demanding standard and proven, time and again, their fitness and dedication to serve,” Levi said in a statement.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The ruling partially upholds a 2025 decision by a Washington, D.C.-based federal judge who had blocked the entire ‌policy from being implemented pending further litigation. The judge said the policy amounted to sex discrimination and likely violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the law.

Trump in a January 2025 executive order said that adopting a transgender identity “conflicts with a soldier’s commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth implemented Trump’s order soon after, prompting legal challenges.

The ban on military service is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to eradicate the recognition and accommodation of transgender people throughout American life.

Federal agencies have dropped lawsuits filed on behalf of transgender workers, ended settlements that benefited transgender students and launched investigations into hospitals and doctors for providing gender-affirming treatment to minors.

The military has about 1.3 million active-duty personnel, according to Department of Defense data. While transgender rights advocates say there are as many as 15,000 transgender service members, officials say the number is in the low thousands.

The U.S. Supreme Court in May 2025 allowed the policy to be implemented, lifting a judge’s ruling in a separate case out of the state of Washington that had temporarily blocked the ban.

But the Supreme Court did not explain its reasoning and may have been ruling on a technicality rather than the merits of the case, Wilkins wrote for the D.C. Circuit on Monday.

洛伦佐是一家 fractional CFO( fractional CFO为固定译法,即“ fractional首席财务官”,可译为“兼职/外包首席财务官)和会计事务所的创始人。

Lawyers, others plead not guilty to massive US insider trading scheme

    2026-06-01T17:50:05.592Z / Reuters

BOSTON, June 1 (Reuters) – Fifteen people, including a lawyer who worked at several major law firms, pleaded not guilty on Monday to U.S. charges that they participated in a decade-long scheme in which attorneys fed an insider trading ring tips about nearly 30 underway mergers.

Nicolo Nourafchan, who had worked at the law firms Sidley Austin, Latham & Watkins and Goodwin Procter, was among the defendants who appeared in federal court in Boston to enter pleas to securities fraud and other charges.

Thirty people in total have been charged with participating in the decade-long scheme, which prosecutors say netted tens of millions of dollars and was orchestrated by Nourafchan and personal injury attorney Robert Yadgarov.

Yadgarov also entered a not guilty plea, along with Nourafchan’s brother, Lorenzo, the founder of a fractional CFO and accounting firm. He is paying Nicolo Nourafchan’s attorney fees under an arrangement a judge warned risked creating a potential conflict of interest.

“You may have different interests as this goes on,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Judith Dein said.

Martin Weinberg, a lawyer for Nicolo Nourafchan, in a statement said his client “asserted his innocence to each allegation at his arraignment today and we intend a vigorous and compelling defense.”

According to authorities, the scheme began in 2014 not long after Nicolo Nourafchan graduated from Yale Law School and landed a job at Sidley Austin.

Prosecutors said Nourafchan, while working at Sidley and other law firms, tipped Yadgarov and others off to impending corporate transactions in exchange for kickbacks generated from any trading profits.

Nourafchan and Yadgarov also recruited other attorneys into the scheme to feed tips to them, including one who worked at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz and another who was employed by Weil, Gotshal & Manges and Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

The latter, Gabriel Gershowitz, secretly pleaded guilty last year and is now a cooperating witness in the case. Guilty pleas for eight other people dating back to 2024 were unsealed the day prosecutors announced the case on May 6.

Many of the defendants are Jewish, and an indictment alleged that they spoke in coded messages related to their backgrounds while discussing merger tips, referring to one deal as a “flight to Israel” and another as a “rabbi.”

Among the defendants is Joseph Suskind, a Florida resident in the insurance adjusting business charged with trading in 2022 on tips about SailPoint’s agreement to be bought by Thoma Bravo and iRobot’s later-abandoned deal to be acquired by Amazon.com Inc. Defense lawyer Michael Kendall called him innocent.

“Evidence is more important than press releases,” Kendall told reporters after Suskind’s arraignment. “We look forward to the trial.”

WASHINGTON, June 1 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump plans to drop his $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund that would have ‌benefited political allies, Axios reported on Monday, after a firestorm of criticism including from some of his fellow Republicans.

“It’s dead for now,” said one of two senior administration officials cited by Axios.

The fund, which would compensate victims of political “weaponization” with taxpayer money, emerged from a legal settlement between Trump’s Justice Department and the Internal Revenue Service to resolve an unprecedented lawsuit in which the president had sought $10 ‌billion over the alleged mishandling of his tax records.

The announcement set off criticism, with lawmakers raising concerns about potential self-dealing by Trump, and the prospect of payouts to violent Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol and assaulted police on January 6, 2021.

On Friday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the administration from moving forward with the fund.
