Moon-bound Artemis II crew copes with toilet issue in otherwise smooth flight

    April 4, 2026 / 3:56 PM EDT / CBS News

The Artemis II astronauts, on track for a flight around the dark side of the moon Monday, faced a relatively quiet day aboard their Orion crew capsule Saturday while engineers on the ground worked to solve a toilet issue.

Overnight, Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen reached a milestone of sorts on their historic voyage to the moon.

“And Integrity, (this is) Houston, we have some news to share with you,” called spacecraft communicator Jackie Mahafey in mission control. “As of 30 seconds ago, you are now closer to the moon than you are to us on Earth.”

A camera on the end of an Orion solar wing shows the spacecraft and its target — the moon — suspended in black of deep space. NASA

“Wow, Jackie, thank you for sharing that with us,” replied Koch. “We all kind of had a collective, I guess, expression of joy at that. It’s hard to imagine, but we can see here on our (instrumentation) that we are at 118,000 nautical miles (from the moon). So yeah, you can do the math.”

The astronauts looked back toward Earth Friday and captured this stunning shot of the home planet as a thin crescent. NASA

She said the crew was enjoying views of the moon through Orion’s docking hatch window.

“It is a beautiful sight,” Koch said. “We’re seeing more and more of the far side, and it’s just a thrill to be here.”

Astronaut Christina Koch takes in a view of planet Earth as the Artemis II crew headed for deep space and a flight around the far side of the moon Monday. NASA

The crew has had intermittent problems with their space toilet since launch on Wednesday, occasionally being told to avoid its use in favor of collapsible contingency urinals, or CCUs, bags used for urine collection that can be emptied to space later.

Early Saturday, as the crew was preparing for bed, flight controllers were unable to dump the toilet’s stored urine overboard as needed, possibly because of a frozen vent line. The astronauts were told, once again, to use their CCUs until the problem was resolved.

Later in the day, after crew wakeup, flight controllers re-oriented the Orion capsule to allow sunlight to warm up the waste water vent line in hopes of thawing any frozen material. The procedure was referred to as a “bake out.”

Another solar wing camera was aimed at the Orion spacecraft after the ship was maneuvered to put a waste water vent nozzle in direct sunlight. The goal was to warm it up enough to thaw out suspected ice in a waste line preventing flight controllers from emptying a urine collection tank used by the capsule’s toilet. NASA

“We have increased the heater temperatures on the nozzle and the lines themselves, and we’re hoping that if the problem is the freezing of the vent lines … then this will give us a chance to see if we’re able to solve that,” mission control radioed the crew.

“We’ll have the cameras on it and we’ll be able to take pictures of that. Due to all of this, we’ve replanned overnight, your timeline is going to be a little bit in flux. We’re working on pulling some things forward. Some things might have to move off of the morning because of this maneuver.”

Veteran astronaut Don Pettit said in a social media post on X that a CCU is “essentially an open container (reusable, sealable and drainable) that controls the urine-air interface using capillary forces like my Space Cup does coffee,” he said, referring to a cup he designed for drinking coffee in weightlessness.

A collapsible contingency urinal, or CCU in NASA speak. is essentially a resealable bag that can hold urine for later disposal if problems develop with a spacecraft toilet. NASA/Don Pettit

“When you are in cislunar space with a broken toilet,” he continued, “you need contingencies, and the CCU replaces the need for about 25 pounds of diapers.”

Otherwise, Orion was performing well. For the second day in a row, a planned trajectory correction thruster firing was called off after analysis showed the spacecraft was still on a near-perfect trajectory.

Later Saturday, Wiseman and Glover planned to take a turn at manually piloting the Orion capsule to help engineers better understand how the spacecraft performs in flight and to provide hands-on feedback for future Artemis astronauts.

All four crew members were expected to spend time late in the day reviewing their plans for video and camera mapping of the lunar surface when they pass behind the moon on Monday. Close approach on the far side, at an altitude of about 4,100 miles, is expected at 7:03 p.m. EDT.

The moon has been observed in great detail by satellites at lower altitudes, but the Artemis II crew will have a unique chance to observe features on the lunar far side that no human has ever directly experienced.

Judge halts Trump effort requiring colleges to show they aren’t considering race in admissions

    April 4, 2026 / 12:13 PM EDT / CBS News

A federal judge on Friday halted efforts by the Trump administration to collect data that proves higher education institutions aren’t considering race in admissions.

The ruling from U.S. District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV in Boston granting the preliminary injunction follows a lawsuit filed earlier this month by a coalition of 17 Democratic state attorneys general. It will only apply to public universities in plaintiffs’ states.

The federal judge said the federal government likely has the authority to collect the data, but the demand was rolled out to universities in a “rushed and chaotic” manner.

“The 120-day deadline imposed by the President led directly to the failure of NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) to engage meaningfully with the institutions during the notice-and-comment process to address the multitude of problems presented by the new requirements,” Saylor wrote.

President Donald Trump ordered the data collection in August after he raised concerns that colleges and universities were using personal statements and other proxies to consider race, which he views as illegal discrimination.

In 2023, the Supreme Court ruled against the use of affirmative action in admissions but said colleges could still consider how race has shaped students’ lives if applicants share that information in their admissions essays.

The states argue the data collection risks invading student privacy and leading to baseless investigations of colleges and universities. They also argued that universities have not been given enough time to collect the data.

“The data has been sought in such a hasty and irresponsible way that it will create problems for universities,” a lawyer for the plaintiffs, Michelle Pascucci, told the court, adding that the effort seem was aimed at uncovering unlawful practices.

The Education Department has defended the effort, arguing taxpayers deserve transparency on how money is spent at institutions that receive federal funding.

The administration’s policy echoes settlement agreements the government negotiated with Brown University and Columbia University, restoring their federal research money. The universities agreed to give the government data on the race, grade-point average and standardized test scores of applicants, admitted students and enrolled students. The schools also agreed to be audited by the government and to release admissions statistics to the public.

The National Center for Education Statistics is to collect the new data, including the race and sex of colleges’ applicants, admitted students and enrolled students. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has said the data, which was originally due by March 18, must be disaggregated by race and sex and retroactively reported for the past seven years.

If colleges fail to submit timely, complete and accurate data, the administration has said McMahon can take action under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, which outlines requirements for colleges receiving federal financial aid for students.

The Trump administration separately has sued Harvard University over similar data, saying it refused to provide admissions records the Justice Department demanded to ensure the school stopped using affirmative action. Harvard has said the university has been responding to the government’s requests and is in compliance with the high court ruling against affirmative action. On Monday, the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights directed Harvard to comply with the data requests within 20 days for face referral to the U.S. Justice Department.

President Trump warned Iran that the nation has 48 hours to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face devastating consequences.

“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Time is running out – 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. Glory be to GOD!”

The president’s comments on Saturday come days after telling the American people in a prime-time address that “we’ve beat and completely decimated Iran.”

“They are decimated both militarily and economically and in every other way,” Mr. Trump said, adding: “Their radar is 100% annihilated. We are unstoppable as a military force.”

The war, which began with joint U.S.- Israel strikes on Feb. 28, has killed thousands, shaken global markets, cut off key shipping routes and spiked fuel prices. A total of 365 American service members have been injured as part of U.S. operations against Iran, according to newly released Pentagon figures.

The war shows no signs of slowing as Iran responds to airstrikes with attacks across the region.

Mr. Trump had initially threatened on March 21 to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants, beginning with the country’s biggest, “if Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS.”

Two days later, however, he said “very good and productive conversations” were being held with Iranian authorities, and that he had postponed any strikes on power plants for five days.

Mr. Trump then pushed the deadline back to April 6.

Mediators from Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt are working to bring the U.S. and Iran back to the negotiating table in Pakistan, two regional officials told the Associated Press. They said that they were working on a compromise to bridge the gap between the two sides’ demands to stop the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, on Saturday signaled his country is willing to join talks.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham praised Mr. Trump’s ultimatum Saturday, saying a “massive military operation awaits Iran if they choose poorly.”

“This regime has been severely crippled through Operation Epic Fury. Their reign of terror against the region and the world needs to come to an end, hopefully through a peace deal,” the Republican wrote in a social media post, adding: “If it’s not clear to Iran and others by now that President Trump means what he says then I don’t know when it will ever be. Choose wisely.”

The president’s comment also came as the U.S. races to find a missing crew member of an F-15F fighter jet shot down by Iran on Friday. One crew member of the two-person crew was rescued by American forces.

It was the first time the U.S. lost an aircraft in Iranian territory during the war.

Iranian state media also said a U.S. A-10 attack aircraft crashed after being hit by Iranian defense forces.

The last time a U.S. fighter jet was shot down in combat was an A-10 Thunderbolt II during the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Houston Cantwell, a former F-16 fighter pilot, told the AP.

President Donald Trump is likely to make leadership changes involving two more top roles at the Justice Department, sources told CBS News on Saturday.

The changes are most likely to affect Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward, the No. 3 official at the Justice Department and Harmeet Dhillon, the Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division.

Senior officials have discussed promoting Dhillon to one of the top department roles, while demoting Woodward, the sources added. It was unclear if final decisions had been made yet.

The discussions of a possible promotion for Dhillon come shortly after Mr. Trump ousted Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier this week, after frustrations that she had not aggressively pursued criminal charges against his political enemies.

A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment on personnel matters.

Mr. Trump named Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as acting attorney general earlier this week. It is unclear whether he will eventually be the permanent replacement. Other front-runners include Lee Zeldin, a former congressman who currently leads the Environmental Protection Agency, CBS previously reported.

Woodward previously served as a defense attorney representing many prominent Trump allies in the past, including White House adviser Peter Navarro, FBI Director Kash Patel and Walt Nauta, who was charged by Special Counsel Jack Smith in the classified documents case.

He also represented Kelly Meggs, one of the Oath Keepers who was convicted for seditious conspiracy in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, before Mr. Trump later commuted his sentence.

He has come under attack from some of Mr. Trump’s allies, notably far-right influencer Laura Loomer, over his wife’s support for progressive causes.

The Associate Attorney General position oversees the Civil Rights Division, the Antitrust Division, the Civil Division, and the Environment and Natural Resources Division, as well as the department’s grant-making offices and the trustee program.

Dhillon currently serves as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division and is known as a staunch loyalist to the president.

The Civil Rights Division has undergone a major shift under Dhillon’s leadership. More than 75% of its attorneys left over the past year, with most of them accepting buy-outs or early retirements, some due to concerns over new mission statements she issued for the office.

Dhillon has hewed closely to Mr. Trump’s policy directives, taking actions that have included launching investigations into diversity, equity and inclusion policies at universities, filing lawsuits to prohibit transgender athletes from playing on girls’ and women’s sports teams, and litigating against dozens of states in an effort to access unredacted copies of their voter registration lists.

She also created a new section within the division that is focused on gun rights. Last year, she upended efforts to reach consent decrees with police departments in Minneapolis and Louisville, after previous Biden-era investigations found both departments were engaged in systemic constitutional abuses.

In an open letter last year, more than 200 former Civil Rights Division attorneys alleged Dhillon was destroying the Civil Rights Division, an office created by the 1957 Civil Rights Act. The law was originally enacted to help undo discriminatory Jim Crow racial segregation and protect the voting rights of Black people.

Ousted Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George says U.S. soldiers deserve “courageous leaders of character” in outgoing email

    April 4, 2026 / 3:46 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Lucia I Suarez Sang

Ousted Army Chief of Staff, Gen. Randy George, told Pentagon officials in an outgoing email that U.S. soldiers deserve “courageous leaders of character,” after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asked him to step down and take immediate retirement.

CBS News exclusively reported earlier this week on the general’s ousting, with one source saying Hegseth wants someone in the role who will implement his and President Trump’s vision for the Army.

An outgoing email, attributed to George and confirmed as authentic by CBS News on Saturday, circulated online after his ousting. A U.S. official told CBS News that George sent the email to Hegseth, the undersecretary and assistant secretary of the Army, as well as to the three- and four-star generals and officers on his staff.

“It has been the greatest privilege to serve beside you and lead Soldiers in support of our country,” he wrote. “I know you’ll all continue to stay laser-focused on the mission, continue innovating, and relentlessly cut through the bureaucracy to get our warfighters what they need to win on the modern battlefield.”

He added: “Our soldiers are truly the best in the world – they deserve tough training and courageous leaders of character. I have no doubt you will all continue to lead with courage, character, and grit.”

George previously served as the senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin from 2021 to 2022, during the Biden administration. He became Army chief of staff, typically a four-year post, in 2023.

Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement that George “will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately. The Department of War is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement.”

The current vice chief of staff of the Army, Gen. Christopher LaNeve, who was formerly Hegseth’s military aide, will be acting Army chief of staff.

Hegseth has fired more than a dozen senior military officers, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. C.Q. Brown, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. James Slife and the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse.

U.S. revokes legal residence status of former Iranian Guard leader Soleimani’s family, takes them into ICE custody

    April 4, 2026 / 3:49 PM EDT / CBS News

The niece and grand-niece of deceased Iranian Revolutionary Guard Major Gen. Qasem Soleimani were arrested Friday night after their lawful U.S. permanent resident status was terminated.

The State Department said Saturday in a statement that Hamideh Soleimani Afshar and her daughter are now in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Soleimani Afshar promoted Iranian regime propaganda, celebrated attacks against U.S. forces in the Middle East, and denounced America as the “Great Satan,” all while “enjoying a lavish lifestyle in Los Angeles,” the statement said.

“As identified by both press reporting and her own social media commentary, Soleimani Afshar is an outspoken supporter of the totalitarian, terrorist regime in Iran,” the U.S. State Department said in a statement.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Soleimani Afshar’s 2019 asylum claim was “fraudulent,” citing at least four trips back to Iran after being issued a green card. Her husband has also been barred from entering the U.S., the State Department said. The government is now moving to strip them of their green cards and ultimately deport them, DHS said.

“It is a privilege to be granted a green card to live in the United States of America. If we have reason to believe a green card holder poses a threat to the U.S., the green card will be revoked,” a DHS spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News.

Iranian military leader Soleimani died in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq in January 2020. He was the architect of Iran’s regional military activities and is hailed as a national icon among supporters of Iran’s theocracy.

Relatively unknown in Iran until the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, Soleimani’s popularity and mystique grew after American officials called for his killing over his help in arming militants with penetrating roadside bombs that killed and maimed U.S. troops.

A decade and a half later, Soleimani had become Iran’s most recognizable battlefield commander, ignoring calls to enter politics but growing as powerful, if not more, than its civilian leadership.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he also terminated the legal status of Fatemeh Ardeshir-Larijani, daughter of former Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Larijani, and her husband, Seyed Kalantar Motamedi. Top Iranian security official Ali Larijani was killed in an airstrike last month. His daughter and husband are no longer in the country.

“The Trump Administration will not allow our country to become a home for foreign nationals who support anti-American terrorist regimes,” Rubio said in a statement on X.

Rubio invoked the same rarely used powers last year to justify the detention and deportation of several pro-Palestinian activists with legal status, including Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil. Those efforts have been hindered by federal court lawsuits that allege Rubio’s determinations penalized the activists’ free speech.

    image
