US moves ahead with $700 million jet engine sale to Turkey despite lawmaker concerns

    • Move signals support for Ankara before next month’s NATO summit in Turkey
    • Turkey was removed from F-35 program after buying Russian S-400 defenses in 2019
    • Several Democratic lawmakers opposed engine sale and cautioned against any F-35 sales to Turkey
    • Congress has 15 days to introduce a joint resolution of disapproval to block the sale

June 25 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s administration has formally notified Congress of its intention to sell dozens of jet ‌engines worth more than $700 million to Turkey, according to a copy of the formal notification seen by Reuters on Thursday.

Reuters was first to report on Wednesday that the Trump administration planned to press ahead with the sale despite objections from some lawmakers over Turkey’s possession of Russian defense systems, acquired in 2019.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

“The U.S. government is prepared to license the export of these items having taken into account political, military, economic, human rights, and arms control considerations,” the State Department said in its notification to Congress, which was dated June 24 and sent late on Wednesday.

The sale is an important gesture to Ankara ahead of a pivotal NATO summit there next month and to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, whom Trump considers a key ally.

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Congress has 15 days to introduce a joint resolution of disapproval if it wants to block the sale. Such a resolution would need to pass in both chambers and could be vetoed by Trump.

Representative Gregory Meeks of New York, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee and a prominent critic of the engine sale, had raised objections during an informal review process with the administration and has not given his green light for the package, two sources, including a U.S. official, said.

In a statement on Wednesday, Meeks criticized what he described as the administration’s failure to make a “good-faith” effort to brief him on the implications of the sale for bilateral ties as well as Turkey’s possession of the S-400s.

“These items will not be delivered for years, and the administration repeatedly ignored persistent requests for information and ‌clarification on key aspects of U.S. policy,” Meeks said.

Asked on Wednesday about the jet engines, the F-35 program and his plans for the summit in Ankara, Trump said: “I’m going to probably do something that will make them very happy.”

The engines, produced by General Electric

    GE.N
, will power Turkey’s first indigenous combat jet KAAN, a major project launched in 2016 as part of the NATO member’s efforts to be more self-sufficient in its defense. It had grown frustrated by past hot-and-cold ties with the West and some arms embargoes, although Turkish officials acknowledge that it will take years before it replaces the American-made F-16s that form the backbone of its air force.

Turkey’s 2019 acquisition of the Russian air defense systems has soured ties with the United States and hampered congressional support for Ankara. In response, Washington imposed sanctions and removed Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet program.

Congress also passed a law prohibiting any sales of F-35s to Turkey as long as Ankara remained in possession of the S-400s, saying the Russian systems pose a security risk to U.S.-made combat aircraft. Since then, it has remained a major flashpoint between the two countries even though Turkey enjoys warmer ties with Washington under Trump.

On Thursday, several Democratic lawmakers said they opposed the engine sale and cautioned the administration over selling Ankara any F-35s.

“We cannot reward Erdogan’s government while it continues to violate U.S. law and threaten our reliable, democratic allies,” Representative Chris Pappas of New Hampshire said in a social media post. “Absolutely no F-35s to Turkey.”

“If POTUS continues down this path, I will introduce a joint resolution of disapproval,” U.S. Representative Dina Titus, a Nevada Democrat, said in a social media post in reference to the sale of jet engines.

Luigi Mangione’s attorneys accuse federal prosecutors of violating his rights

    Updated on: June 25, 2026 / 7:35 PM EDT / CBS News

Attorneys for Luigi Mangione are accusing federal prosecutors of manipulating public opinion against the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and denying him his right to a fair trial.

Mangione is facing both state and federal charges for Thompson’s murder in December 2024. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.

On Thursday, NBC News New York reported that Mangione’s attorneys had talks with federal prosecutors about a possible plea deal in advance of a scheduled court hearing on Monday, July 6, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Mangione’s attorneys said in a statement to CBS News on Thursday that the report was “troubling.”

“This information attributed to ‘anonymous sources’ is part of a troubling, deliberate pattern by prosecutors and law enforcement to prejudice Luigi, manipulate public opinion, and violate his constitutional right to a fair trial and impartial jury,” defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo said. “Every defendant in America is presumed innocent until proven guilty, including Luigi, who has to fight the same charges twice.”

Discussions between prosecutors and defense attorneys prior to trial, including discussions about plea agreements, are common, legal experts told CBS News.

“They’re going to have a conversation about whether or not they will do a deal. It is not at all uncommon to have a conversation about a potential plea deal throughout the process,” CBS News legal analyst Jessica Levinson said.

“Generally, the defense will say, ‘Hey, can we plead this out,’ and prosecutors will say, ‘Here’s what we can offer,’” said former Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg.

Plea agreements can be negotiated all the way up until trial, as in the recent case of Bryan Kohberger, who pleaded guilty last July to the murders of four University of Idaho students as part of a plea deal that spared him from facing the death penalty.

“To paraphrase Lenny Bruce, ‘In the halls of justice, justice is often done in the halls,’” Aronberg said.

CBS News has reached out to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Earlier this month, Mangione’s attorneys said they might seek a psychiatric defense for Mangione in his New York state trial. The following day, on June 18, Mangione’s attorneys abruptly withdrew the notice of their intent to argue an “extreme emotional disturbance.”

Mangione’s case has garnered outsized attention from around the world since he was accused of the December 2024 killing of Thompson outside a healthcare industry conference in Midtown Manhattan.

The trial in the state case is set to begin in September, followed by the federal interstate stalking trial scheduled to begin in November.

    https://www.cnn.com/

Josh Shapiro says he has ‘profound’ differences with Mamdani-backed candidate

    2026-06-25T21:27:46.457Z / CNN

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro told CNN’s Dana Bash in an interview Thursday that he had “profound differences” with one of the candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in Tuesday’s primary elections, underscoring Democratic Party fractures heading into the midterms.

Shapiro was asked about Darializa Avila Chevalier, the 32-year-old democratic socialist who defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, this week. Their primary, like many of Tuesday’s contests in New York, focused on the US-Israel relationship.

Gov. Josh Shapiro addresses rise of democratic socialists

CNN’s KFile uncovered a deleted X account belonging to Avila Chevalier that included thousands of posts and reposts expressing support for abolishing police, prisons and borders, as well as seizing private property and nationalizing major industries and calling into question Israel’s right to exist.

Avila Chevalier also attended a pro-Palestinian rally the day after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel – where militants killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages. The rally was widely condemned by politicians, including Brad Lander, another Mamdani-backed candidate who defeated Rep. Dan Goldman and said in a recent debate that the rally “spoke about Hamas in ways that I just thought were vile.”

“Her district voted for her. But I have profound differences from that particular candidate based on the citations that you read there,” Shapiro told Bash. “She’s not someone who seemingly I would agree with on many things or that we share similar values. She ran on the Democratic ticket, I guess, as a socialist. Voters in that district determined that she was the one they wanted representing her.”

CNN has reached out to Avila Chevalier’s campaign for comment.

Avila Chevalier helped lead campus protests at Columbia University over Israel and its treatment of Palestinians in Gaza, where more than 70,000 have died since the start of the war, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

“I’ve seen a lot of similarities not just in the way things are done, but also in the very institutions that are enacting that violence. The tear gas that was being dropped on Palestinians in Gaza in 2014 was the same tear gas that was being dropped on Black protesters in Ferguson in 2014,” Avila Chevalier said in a debate against Espaillat.

Avila Chevalier said she would “never celebrate the death of any human being,” arguing that she attended the October 8 rally to protest against an “outsized reaction” to Hamas’ attack, which she feared would “cause the death of thousands upon thousands of people” in Gaza.

Shapiro, who is running for reelection this fall and a potential 2028 presidential contender, argued that Democrats were ready to “have a battle over what we believe in,” something that he said hadn’t occurred for the party since the 1992 election, when the party nominated then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, who went on to defeat President George H.W. Bush.

“I get that there are some candidates that just say a lot of words and attract a lot of attention,” Shapiro said. “But what we need to do as a party is drill down on how we can take those words, turn them into action to make people’s lives better.”

Shapiro has backed his own slate of Pennsylvania Democrats in seeking to flip up to four Republican-held US House seats this fall. One of the most prominent Jewish politicians in the country, Shapiro is a defender of Israel but an advocate for a two-state solution between the Israelis and Palestinians.

He was asked Tuesday if he believed a Jewish politician could win a national Democratic primary.

“I’m not going to focus on what happens in 2028,” Shapiro said. “But what I can tell you that as when I ran for governor in 2022 and now as I’m running for reelection as Pennsylvania governor, I’ve been very open about how faith and family guide me in this life of service. I’m very open about who I am and what motivates me to serve. And what I’ve received back from the people of Pennsylvania is goodness.”

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration in two key immigration cases on Thursday, drawing strong opposition from blue state Democrats and prompting a prominent House Republican to break ranks over concerns of a looming healthcare “crisis.”

In a 6-3 decision in Mullin v. Doe, the high court ruled that Haitian and Syrian nationals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) cannot turn to federal courts to postpone the revocation of their legal status while challenging the Trump administration’s policies.

In a separate ruling, the court also held that migrants turned away at the southern border before entering the U.S. are not entitled to apply for asylum.

Democrat leaders in New York and Massachusetts immediately held news conferences to denounce the Supreme Court’s decisions and pledge local resistance.

In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the state would push back by designating “sensitive locations” to block ICE agents and banning masks for immigration enforcers.

“This is New York. We fight back. We defend our people,” Hochul said. “For those who think they can come here and just tell us that that’s going to be the different way that it is, you got to get to us first.”

New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams delivered some of the harshest rhetoric, accusing the Trump administration of operating with a “White supremacist lens.”

“This is another day in Trump’s America where we have someone in the White House who believes in fascist rules with a White supremacist lens,” Williams said. “He is doing that because his policies are based on treating people like they are not human beings, particularly if they’re Black and Brown.”

TRUMP FOES MELT DOWN THAT SCOTUS IS UNLEASHING ‘RACIAL TERROR’ ON US WITH ICE RAID RULING

In her dissenting opinion on the ruling, Supreme Court Justice Elena argued there is evidence the Trump administration was motivated by “racial animus” when revoking Haitians’ TPS, citing statements Trump made during the lead-up to the 2024 election, including claims that Haitians were “eating pets in Ohio.”

However, Justice Samuel Alito, who authored both majority opinions for the Supreme Court’s decisions, noted the respondents themselves suggested the administration might simply oppose TPS as a general policy matter rather than targeting a specific group.

Meanwhile, New York Attorney General Letitia James called the ruling a “betrayal of who we are supposed to be as a nation,” and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the activation of a free municipal legal hotline to help affected immigrants.

“The people of New York City are going to show up for you as we face down a Supreme Court ruling that just opened the door to fear instability and the threat of deportation for so many,” said Mamdani, whose wife is Syrian-American. “… We don’t let those who are afraid of what makes this city great try to divide us. We reject the politics of fear.”

FEDERAL JUDGE HALTS TRUMP TPS POLICY, ACCUSES DHS OF MAKING MIGRANTS ‘ATONE FOR THEIR RACE’

In Massachusetts, which hosts roughly 45,000 TPS holders, Gov. Maura Healey slammed the decision, arguing it “makes no sense for our families, our economy, our communities, [or] our country.”

A visibly emotional Boston Mayor Michelle Wu addressed migrants directly, telling them, “You belong here.”

The ruling also exposed a rift within the GOP, as Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., strongly criticized the move to end TPS for Haitians.

While Lawler noted he does not dispute the president’s legal authority to end TPS, he warned that doing so now could trigger a disaster for the U.S. healthcare system, which heavily relies on Haitian workers.

“Of the 350,000+ lawful Haitian TPS holders, roughly 1/3rd work in our healthcare system,” Lawler wrote in an X post. “Immediately shutting off TPS will create a crisis in our hospitals, nursing homes, and in the I/DD community.”

Lawler also pointed to the rampant gang violence in Haiti, citing the State Department’s Level 4 travel advisory, as proof that the situation “continues to warrant an extension” of protections.

FILE – Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey also hosted a news conference on Thursday, pushing back on the Supreme Court’s decision.(David L. Ryan/The Boston Globe via Getty Images)

He urged the administration to allow an “orderly process” over the next six months for Haitian TPS holders to maintain their work authorizations and called on the Senate to take up his legislation to temporarily extend their status.

Following the decision, the White House and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) celebrated the rulings as a win for the rule of law.

“This ruling is a tremendous win for the Trump administration,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital. “Today, the Supreme Court affirmed what President Trump has always maintained: temporary protected status is, by definition, temporary. It was never intended to be a pathway to permanent status or legal residency.”

Similarly, DHS General Counsel James Percival posted on X that “the T in TPS stands for TEMPORARY, yet many of these designations became de facto amnesty.”

“This is a win for the rule of law and common sense,” Percival said.

Iran strikes commercial ship in Strait of Hormuz in challenge to U.S.-Iran deal

    June 25, 2026 / 5:53 PM EDT / CBS News

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards attacked a Singapore-flagged commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, a U.S. official confirmed to CBS News, posing a challenge to President Trump’s efforts to reopen the critical shipping corridor.

The ship’s bridge was damaged after it was struck on its starboard side by an “unknown projectile” off the coast of Dahit, Oman, according to an advisory from the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Centre. The advisory said no casualties or environmental impact were reported.

After the strike, the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization temporarily paused a days-old plan to evacuate many of the vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf, pointing to Thursday’s strike. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said the halt is needed “in order to reconfirm that the necessary safety guarantees continue to be in place.”

The international organization said the vessel had passed through the Strait of Hormuz before it was struck, and it “did not transit under IMO’s evacuation framework.”

“I have always reiterated that the safety of the seafarers remains paramount,” Dominguez said in a statement. “Therefore, to ensure a coordinated approach and navigational safety, the evacuation plan will be paused until further clarity is obtained.”

The U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding last week that boosted hopes of shipping returning to the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint that normally carries one-fifth of the world’s oil but was largely closed to ships during months of war. Under the agreement, Iran is expected to arrange for toll-free safe passage “using its best efforts” for 60 days.

Since then, ship traffic has picked up significantly, with 70 vessels sailing through the strait on Tuesday, compared to just six a week earlier, according to data from analytics firm Kpler, which noted some of the uptick could be due to a “post-deal release of delayed traffic.” With shipping picking back up, global oil prices have plummeted.

The IMO also announced Tuesday it was launching a “large-scale” evacuation effort to help thousands of mariners scattered across hundreds of vessels exit the region. It said two routes are available: One through Iranian waters in the northern portion of the Strait of Hormuz, and another through Omani waters in the south.

But disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz have persisted. The U.S.-favored route involves sailing close to the Omani coastline, while Iran has insisted that ships seek its permission before transiting the strait and use a route closer to its coast.

Iran’s Persian Strait Gulf Authority said Thursday: “Any passage through routes outside the framework designated by PGSA will not be covered by safe passage guarantees and will not be entitled to insurance coverage or related liabilities.”

Iran also hasn’t ruled out seeking tolls for ships that pass through the strait after the memorandum of understanding’s 60-day time limit ends. The Trump administration and U.S. allies in the region have called that idea unacceptable and a violation of international law. Oman has said it plans to jointly manage the strait with Iran but isn’t looking to charge tolls.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters early Thursday the Trump administration expects the strait to stay open, and is planning to judge Iran based on its actions rather than its “maximalist rhetoric.”

“If ships are moving as they should be moving, then that’s what we’re going to judge, and that’s what we’re going to react to,” he said while visiting Bahrain. “If, on the other hand, this rhetoric is backed up by actual ships being threatened and ships are not moving, that’s a violation of the agreement, and we’re going to have a problem with it.”
